Woman flies to Berlin for the day for just £100 – and was back in time for bed

Natasha Blanthorn had always wanted to visit Berlin, but did not want to spend a fortune on a weekend away – so she decided to go for the day

A woman flew to Berlin and spent a day sightseeing for £100 – and she was back in bed for 10pm. Natasha Blanthorn, 26, always fancied a trip to Berlin to experience the rich culture and history.

She trawled the internet to bag some budget flights and flew out on November 8 on on a 6.20am flight, determined to stick to a budget of £100. Natasha, a college marketing manager from Macclesfield, Cheshire, spent the day sightseeing – joining a walking tour and visiting a history museum.

And 25,000 steps later she headed back to the airport to fly home – in time for 10pm bedtime. In total she spent just £102.07 for the budget day out – and said while its “not for the faint-hearted”, she loved every second.

Natasha said: “I had to get up at 3.30am for the flights – I only got about four hours’ sleep. But the second I got there, all the tiredness left my body.

“Because I joined a tour, I got to see a lot of the iconic sites. I didn’t have to use a single day of annual leave – and the whole thing cost just £100.”

Natasha had completed two ‘extreme day trips’ prior to booking her Berlin trip – and said she regularly trawled Skyscanner for reduced flights. When return flights from Manchester to Berlin dropped from around £80 to £38, she snapped them up.

Six weeks later she was on a flight, having set off early to drive to Manchester from Macclesfield, and rented a parking space on someone’s driveway, costing just £11.60 for the day.

Natasha took just one small bit of hand luggage – containing a portable charger, her passport, some breakfast bars, her headphones and her purse. They departed at 6:20am, and landed just before 9am.

She bought an £8.30 return train ticket to take her to Alexanderplatz and spent the morning wandering around the Topography of Terror exhibit. The free exhibit showcased some of the history of the SS in the Third Reich.

From there, Natasha nipped off to grab some lunch – swinging by a McDonalds for convenience – otherwise just fuelling herself on snacks. She said: “Maybe that wasn’t very culturally enriching, but time was of the essence, and there were queues at all the street vendors. I knew I needed something to keep me going through the tour.”

She had pre-booked a £14.17 walking tour starting at 1pm, which lasted three hours and included informational stops at Hitler’s Bunker (the Führerbunker), Checkpoint Charlie, and the Brandenburg Gate.

She got the same train back to the airport around 4pm, arriving at 5.50pm, and boarded her flight home at 8.20pm. Despite only spending a few hours in the iconic city, she felt she was able to cover a lot of the main historical landmarks.

She said: “The walking tour was best – Berlin is so rich in history. I would never in a million years have had time to research all the facts about the different sites on my own, but I got everything on the tour.”

Natasha said the price of the day was so reasonable that she’s already planning a return to visit the east side of the city to see the art at the East Side Gallery.

She said: “When I got back, I felt like I was high, just from the adrenaline of it all. It was a busy day, but you forget all the tiredness and just remember the memories.”

A train from London to Glasgow on Tuesday, November 25 at lunchtime costs £130.80p at the time of writing – £28.73p more than Natasha’s trip.

COSTS:

Flights – £38.00 return

Parking – £11.60 for the day near airport

Breakfast at Manchester airport: £8.00

Food in total in Berlin: £22.00

Walking tour: £14.17

Train to and from Berlin airport: £8.30

Total: £102.07

‘Wicked: For Good’ flies to the top of the box office

Elphaba and Glinda have changed the box office, at least for this weekend.

“Wicked: For Good” — the conclusion to Universal Pictures’ two-part film franchise — hauled in an estimated $150 million in the U.S. and Canada this weekend, marking the second-highest domestic opening this year, trailing only blockbuster hit “A Minecraft Movie.” Globally, the film grossed about $226 million.

The opening weekend audience for “Wicked: For Good” skewed even more female (69%) than the first film, which counted 61% of its viewers as women, according to data from EntTelligence.

Lionsgate’s “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t” came in a distant second at the domestic box office with $9.1 million. The third installment of the illusionist franchise has now brought in a cumulative $36.8 million in the U.S. and Canada and a total of $109.4 million globally across its two weekends.

Disney’s 20th Century Studios’ “Predator: Badlands,” Paramount Pictures’ “The Running Man” and “Rental Family” from Searchlight Pictures rounded out this weekend’s top five.

The Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande-led film was bolstered by a massive marketing push that began early last year before the first “Wicked” movie debuted. Though the films are based on the hit Broadway play, Universal wanted to expand awareness of the story to markets that had been less exposed to the theatrical show.

As a result, the franchise has partnered with more than 100 brands, including toy companies like Lego and Mattel as well as more unexpected firms such as household goods giant P&G and online Asian supermarket Weee!, where director Jon M. Chu serves as chief creative officer.

The film’s opening weekend success also points to a demand for female-focused franchises.

After 2023’s “Barbie” grossed $1.4 billion at the global box office, there were countless calls for more films geared toward women. But this year, many of the big-budget movies were male-leaning, and the narrower returns at the box office have prompted questions about whether films were reaching all possible demographics.

“Women continue to be a really underserved audience,” said Shawn Robbins, director of movie analytics at Fandango and founder of the website Box Office Theory. “In terms of large blockbusters, it’s been a minute since there’s been a female-skewing movie on the scale of ‘Wicked’ or ‘Lilo & Stitch.’”

Brit flies to Portugal for just £18 but is floored by beer price on easyJet flight

A British YouTuber was left stunned by the price of a small beer on his flight to Portugal after he had been delighted to get his ticket for just £17.99

A British YouTuber managed to fly from Manchester Airport to Portugal for a mere £17.99 – but the cost of a small beer on his flight left him stunned.

The content creator, known to his fans as Just Deano, jetted off abroad to spend a week filming in Albufeira, a seaside resort that’s a hit with Brits due to its affordable prices and sunny climate.

Kicking off his vlog, he quipped: “Terminal one I hear you say? Ryanair is in terminal three Deano. You’re a cheap skate! Well, this flight cost me £17.99… £17.99! And it is in terminal one because we are flying with easyJet.”

After breezing through security, Deano, whose flight was scheduled for the evening, decided to indulge in a pre-holiday tipple at Bar MCR.

However, despite planning to enjoy a pint of Guinness, he was appalled to see the iconic dark beverage being served in generic non-branded glasses.

With that in mind, he opted for a pint of Mahou lager instead, and raising his eyebrows, he remarked: “Airport prices of course – £7.40 a pint…”

Deano had loaded episodes of the Netflix series House of Guinness onto his phone for the flight, and was pleasantly surprised when everything ran like clockwork, a welcome change after recent travel nightmares.

Settling into his seat on the easyJet flight, he commented that the smoothness of his journey was “unusual for all the right reasons” and he even had an entire aisle to himself.

However, deciding to spoil himself with another beer, he later mused: “So, with everything going so well, I thought let’s treat myself to a couple of beers…

“The only reason I got two and not one is because it is €7 (approx £6) for one can of Birra Moretti and it is €10.95 (approx £9.50) for two.”

After sampling his pricey drink from a plastic cup, he remarked: “Lukewarm. What a shame. The only thing going wrong today is the lukewarm beer. So far.”

Upon his delayed arrival at Faro Airport, he then shelled out €21 (approx £18) for an Uber to his accommodation, before turning in for the evening.

Following the upload of his video, which you can view in its entirety here, numerous viewers from his 33,300-strong following were swift to weigh in on the costs.

One viewer commented: “Deano spent more on beer than the air travel.”

Another remarked: “Great video mate but I would not be paying 11euros for two small warm cans of lager.”

A third chimed in with: “Ridiculous the prices of beer on the plane I say I’m not going to every time but always do. Belter episode DEANO.”

One individual referenced the earlier Guinness glass controversy, stating: “Guinness in a non-Guinness glass should actually be illegal and I am not joking!”.

Finally, another supporter observed: “Weird your taxi is more than your flight. Yet the plane costs far more in fuel to fly there.”

In response to claims made in this story, a spokesperson for easyJet said: “A flight to Portugal and two beers for under £30 doesn’t sound like something to complain about.”
