Gorgeous little European island close to Africa that’s 22C in October

One little island in the Atlantic Ocean stays warm and sunny long after summer is over – and it is closer to Africa than the continent it technically belongs to

When October arrives, much of Britain becomes grey, damp and chilly, leaving countless Brits yearning for a final dose of sunshine.

The brilliant news is that autumn often presents the most affordable time to secure a getaway, and with pupils back at school, the tourist hordes have thinned out considerably.

Whilst most European coastal spots begin to turn cooler, there’s one magnificent little island that remains balmy and bright, and it’s nearer to Africa than the continent it officially calls home. This gorgeous volcanic isle in the Atlantic boasts average daily temperatures of approximately 22C in October.

And whilst it’s a Portuguese territory, it lies more than 300 miles west of Morocco and over 600 miles from Lisbon. The island is Madeira – a verdant, mountainous haven that offers everything from breathtaking tropical landscapes to delightful towns and welcoming hospitality.

Frequently dubbed the “Hawaii of Europe”, it’s a perfect retreat for holidaymakers seeking dependable sunshine without travelling too far.

Flights from Britain to Madeira last just under four hours, with direct connections available from London, Manchester, Bristol, Birmingham, and other cities. Ryanair, Jet2, easyJet, and TUI all provide direct services to the island’s capital, Funchal.

Madeira is most famous as the birthplace of football legend Cristiano Ronaldo, who was born in Funchal in 1985. The island honours his heritage with a special museum and even a statue on the waterfront. But there’s far more to discover beyond that.

For those who adore trekking, countless renowned Levada trails await exploration. These narrow footpaths wind alongside the island’s ancient irrigation channels through valleys, clifftops and woodlands.

Among the most beloved routes is the Levada do Caldeirão Verde, which meanders through verdant laurel forests featuring spectacular cascades. Moreover, the capital Funchal boasts cobbled lanes, vibrant markets, and charming botanical gardens.

Tourists can also enjoy a cable car journey up to Monte, then experience a traditional wicker toboggan ride back down. Whale and dolphin spotting excursions operate throughout the year, and October remains sufficiently warm for swimming or lounging beside the ocean.

Madeira’s culinary offerings represent another major attraction. Regional delicacies feature black scabbard fish served with banana, espetada (beef skewers), and naturally, the globally renowned Madeira wine.

Travellers who have experienced the island describe its tranquil ambience, gentle climate, and breathtaking landscapes, reports the Express. One visitor commented on Tripadvisor: “It’s absolutely breathtaking, the views are out of this world.”

Another remarked: “We visited in October and the weather was perfect. Not too hot, not too cold, just right for walking and relaxing.” The sole consideration is that the island’s climate can prove unpredictable, positioned as it is amidst the Atlantic Ocean.

Aircraft occasionally cannot touch down owing to powerful winds and must be redirected to mainland Portugal. Although sandy beaches are scarce, the island boasts some remarkable volcanic rock pools that serve as a favourite spot for swimming and unwinding.

Man Utd lining up Cristiano Ronaldo reunion in lucrative mid-season friendly as club seek to fill £100m black hole

MANCHESTER UNITED are weighing up a cash-spinning mid-season friendly in Saudi Arabia.

A trip to the Middle East could reunite the Red Devils with Cristiano Ronaldo, who left Old Trafford on bitter terms to join Al-Nassr in 2022.

United are holding early-stage talks with stakeholders while looking into possible dates and opponents.

But a face-off with CR7 would be the most lucrative prospect at a time when they’re crying out for funds.

United could stage midweek friendlies this season after failing to qualify for any European competition.

Losing May’s Europa League final to Tottenham meant a £100million reward fell by the wayside.

And with roughly £750m worth of debt weighing on Sir Jim Ratcliffe‘s shoulders, United are being forced to get creative.

Their schedule thinned out even more with defeat to Grimsby Town in round two of the Carabao Cup.

SunSport exclusively revealed last month that AC Milan, RB Leipzig, Lazio and Sevilla – four big clubs who missed out on Europe – have also been scouted out as potential friendly opponents.

United’s new plan comes after they scrapped the idea of a fly-on-the-wall documentary, which could have earned them millions.

And Ruben Amorim could be sold on a trip to the Middle East if it doubles up as a warm weather training camp in the winter months.

Ratcliffe has sacked up to 450 United employees as part of his ruthless efforts to get finances back on track.

But he insists the issue had to be tackled head-on, telling the BBC in March: “We can’t put our head in the sand.

“We have to deal with the problem. And it’s a big problem, not a small problem.

“We are in the process of change and it’s an uncomfortable period and disruptive and I do feel sympathy with the fans.”

Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo urged to FIGHT in ‘global boxing spectacle’ by ex-heavyweight champion’s trainer

WAYNE ROONEY has been encouraged to face Cristiano Ronaldo in the boxing ring in a football super fight.

Malik Scott, former coach of heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder, suggested the fight, labelling such a bout a ‘global event.’

Scott, 44, told CanadaCasino: “Cristiano Ronaldo vs. Wayne Rooney would bring more eyes to boxing, and I’m all for it.

“Any time boxing gets more attention, it’s a good thing. I want people to enjoy the spectacle, not just critique it.

“Just enjoy the carnival. It would be a global event because these are high-level names that would draw huge numbers.”

Scott is no stranger to the world of football, having married fan-favourite CBS sports broadcaster Kate Abdo in September last year.

His prospective competitors were iconic teammates at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson, making over 200 appearances together.

Their relationship was believed to have turned cold following Ronaldo‘s protests to the referee earning Rooney a red card in a 2006 World Cup quarter final, which Portugal would go on to win on penalties.

He also made headlines for his comments on the heated Messi vs Ronaldo debate, backing the Argentinian over his former teammate.

But earlier this week the England legend rubbished rumours of bad blood between the two on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast.

Rooney, 39, said: “People think I hate him (Ronaldo).

“I love him. I think he’s an absolute genius and what he’s doing is incredible.

Wayne Rooney called out for boxing match by former Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny

“I love Cristiano and playing with him. I don’t think people realise actually how close me and him were.”

While it seems that a boxing score-settler between the two is unlikely, it is not the only fight that Rooney has been tipped of late.

He was called out earlier this week by former Leeds United and Ireland international keeper Paddy Kenny.

Kenny is himself set to face former Prem footballer Curtis Davies at a charity event next month, and is keen to keep the ball rolling on his new boxing escapades.

Champions League giants’ stadium looks unrecognisable as building site with Cristiano Ronaldo tribute inside

SPORTING’S stadium underwent an incredible transformation during the summer.. but they’re STILL working on it with the 2025-26 season underway.

The iconic Portuguese ground – which was only built in 2003 for a cost of £150million – was given a bit of a facelift during the offseason.

And it left the arena looking utterly unrecognisable – particularly after the entire pitch was ripped up and left looking like a building site.

Following the end of the 2024-25 season – in which Cristiano Ronaldo‘s old club won the league in no small part down to Arsenal new-boy Viktor Gyokeres‘ goals – Sporting got to work on the makeover.

Most-notably, the pitch was ripped up and replaced by a hybrid surface.

And it passed the first test with flying colours, as Primeira Liga officials gave it a 10/10 for the club’s 6-0 win over Arouca in their first home game of the season.

But it wasn’t just re-laying the pitch – the entire playing surface was LOWERED to allow the club to add 2,000 more seats around the base of the stadium.

That boosted the capacity from 50,095 to 52,095.

And that new feature – not ready for the Arouca battering – WILL be ready for the massive derby game against Porto on August 30 with seats now being installed.

The dugout area has been completely renovated, too – with the bench now boasted a capacity of 28 players and coaches.

On top of that, Sporting have opened a new “Emerald Lounge” for corporate ticket holders.

Club chiefs also splashed out £15m on repurchasing the adjacent Alvalaxia entertainment complex earlier this month.

Celtic star Daizen Maeda spotted doing press-ups in technical area after being subbed-off against Sporting Lisbon

Their plan is to re-home their club museum – which features their most important trophies, including replicas of individual Ballon d’Or gongs won by former players, Ronaldo and Luis Figo.

For now, the exhibition has been moved inside the stadium and is open to the public until the permanent residence is completed.

There is more work to be done inside the stadium, still – with the big screens currently being installed.

For now, supporters have a tiny scoreboard displayed on advertising hoardings on the side of the pitch.

But in time, the plan is to install multiple big screens.

Their plan moving forward is to cash-in on their corporate lounges – renting them out on non-matchdays for private events.

‘I watch the Club World Cup for free on DAZN – the extras have won me over’

The Mirror’s TV writer Jake Hackney joined DAZN to watch the FIFA Club World Cup for free, but the streaming platform’s other features left him impressed

The FIFA Club World Cup kicked off earlier this month, so the Mirror’s TV writer Jake Hackney set up a free DAZN account to see what all the hype is about. Like many Brits, Jake always linked DAZN with boxing, but as that’s never been his sport, he was yet to truly delve into the platform.

DAZN is now the sole global broadcaster of all 63 matches in the Club World Cup and is showing every game for free. FIFA has really pulled out all the stops with the competition, giving it a makeover with a new format featuring 32 of the world’s top clubs.

Manchester City and Chelsea are flying the flag for the Premier League, along with the likes of Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Miami and Boca Juniors. The tournament runs until the final on July 13, and football fans can sign up for a free DAZN account to watch every match.

As Jake previously told the Mirror, he found it odd not watching football on the BBC or Sky Sports, but given the quality of content and amount of extras available on DAZN, he believes the streaming platform will become more associated with football in the future. Jake opted for the free account, but there’s also the option to upgrade to DAZN’s Premium plan from £9.99.

This includes every Club World Cup match in HDR picture quality and Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound, plus highlights, replays, fewer adverts and full access to the rest of the DAZN platform. But even with a free account, there’s plenty of football content to keep fans entertained in the gap between the Premier League and EFL seasons.

The streaming service is showing all of the FIFA Club World Cup games.

What struck Jake was the sheer volume of content available beyond the live matches, with a plethora of features, shows and compilations readily accessible on the Club World Cup homepage. Interviews with big names such as Harry Kane and Pep Guardiola are featured, along with DAZN’s ‘Icons’ series, which offers an in-depth look at each team and the 12 USA host cities.

Since signing up to DAZN, Jake has found himself engrossed in the amount of documentaries focusing on football greats like Cristiano Ronaldo, Maradona and Brazilian Ronaldo. There’s a treasure trove of vintage footage showcasing all the goals scored by specific teams at previous FIFA World Cups, featuring legends like Alessandro Del Piero, Raúl and Didier Drogba.

A TV displaying the Club World Cup homepage on DAZN

In short, there’s a feast of content to delve into on DAZN. It’s also straightforward to keep up with the latest competition, with every forthcoming fixture displayed on the Club World Cup homepage complete with dates and kick-off times, as well as the option to view the group brackets and tables, making it simple to stay updated with the current standings.

One can track their favourite teams in the competition to receive a push notification before their games, with Jake following Chelsea and Man City. DAZN sends him reminders about each of their fixtures, though with some kicking off in the early hours, he’ll opt to watch the DAZN highlights instead.

For those who aren’t keen on adding another subscription to their list, DAZN has sublicensed a selection of matches to Channel 5, meaning 23 games will be shown on both DAZN and Channel 5. This could be a good alternative for football fans who aren’t as tech-savvy or don’t mind missing out on some games.

Screengrab of the DAZN platform
DAZN’s free account includes a host of interviews and documentaries(Image: DAZN/Jake Hackney)

Of course, there’s always the traditional Sky Sports package that costs £35 per month on a 24-month contract, in addition to essential Sky TV. This includes nine dedicated channels, covering the Premier League, Football, Cricket, Golf, F1, Boxing, NFL, NBA, Netball and much more, although the length of the contract might be a drawback for some.

DAZN boasts an impressive lineup of pundits for its Club World Cup coverage, including none other than Brazilian legend Ronaldo. Other big names include John Obi Mikel and Sami Khedira, with Conor McNamara, Andros Townsend, Brad Friedel, Rob Green among the commentators, offering a refreshing change from the usual voices on Sky or TNT Sports.

Jake has been using DAZN on both his Samsung smart TV and iPhone 13 and it’s performed largely well. There have been moments where it’s been slightly slow to respond and there’s been a bit of lag, but once a live game or documentary has loaded up, he has encountered no major problems.

‘I joined DAZN to watch the Club World Cup for free but it’s the extras that won me over’

The FIFA Club World Cup kicked off on Saturday so our TV writer Jake Hackney registered for a free DAZN account to catch all the action, here’s what he made of the streamer.

DAZN is now the exclusive global broadcaster of all 63 fixtures in the Club World Cup and is airing every game for free, which is definitely more my bag. FIFA has really gone all out with this competition, revamping it with a new format featuring 32 of the best clubs from around the world.

It certainly feels strange not watching football on the BBC or Sky Sports, but considering the quality of content and amount of extras on offer, I wouldn’t be surprised if DAZN becomes more synonymous with football in the coming years. I opted for the free account, but there’s also the option to upgrade to DAZN’s Premium plan from £9.99.

Sergio Aguero takes dig at Cristiano Ronaldo to Speed in awkward conversation at Club World Cup

SERGIO AGUERO brutally trolled Cristiano Ronaldo for being absent from the Club World Cup after meeting the footie icon’s biggest fan, iShowSpeed.

The revamped 32-team tournament got underway early on Sunday morning, with Inter Miami and Al-Ahly lighting the blue touch paper.

Despite the competition now consisting of 32 teams, Ronaldo‘s Al-Nassr failed to qualify for the stateside competition.

He could’ve played in the tournament had he joined one of the participating teams on a short-term deal.

But the 40-year-old opted against doing that, much to the disappointment of American streamer iShowSpeed.

And CR7 was on the receiving end of several shots from Aguero during a live stream with social media sensation Speed.

Aguero asked Speed: “You’re a very big fan of Cristiano, no?”

In response to Speed’s confirmation of his Ronaldo fandom, former Argentina international Aguero said: “I respect it, it’s OK.

“He’s a good player. I prefer [Lionel] Messi, of course.”

Aguero then stuck the knife into Ronaldo by sarcastically asking Speed: “Ronaldo is playing here now at the Club World Cup or no?

Big-hearted Cristiano Ronaldo laughs it off after fan in wheelchair accidentally drives into him

CRISTIANO RONALDO’S attitude towards fans can’t be knocked – even when they accidentally knock him!

The Manchester United legend won new admirers for the way he dealt with a supporter catching him on the shin with his wheelchair.

Ronaldo appeared to have fun over the incident

Viewers loved the amusing exchange as Ronaldo ended up with a smile almost as big as his bank balance.

It began an eventful night for Ronaldo, who was outside Portugal’s team hotel at the time of the ‘collision’.

The Al-Nassr striker was later grabbed by a pitch invader as he warmed up at Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena to face Germany in the Nations League semi-final.

And he then drilled Portugal’s clincher in a 2-1 comeback win – thanks to his 137th international goal midway through the second half.

Understandably the 40-year-old looked ecstatic.

But he was in high spirits too during his earlier hotel encounter.

Wearing shorts and training gear, Ronaldo walked over to sign an autograph.

And as he was preparing to scribble his name, the fan’s wheelchair nudged  forward and hit the five-time Ballon d’Or winner on the right leg.

And he then finished scribbling his signature before posing for a selfie with the man.

One fan responded to the clip on social media by saying: “Massive respect to CR7 who made the supporters day.”

Another viewer wrote: “Ronaldo down to earth.”

“I have to respect him for this,” posted a third.

Many fans still relentlessly argue online over Ronaldo’s GOAT claims compared to those of  Lionel Messi.

But Ron’s ‘bumpy’ exchange even earned grudging backing from supporters of his great rival!

One said: “As someone who prefers Messi’s play style this is why you gotta respect Ronaldo, class human being.”
