Reddit sleuths have unearthed an old article from October 8, 1995 that confirmed they were once a couple who were “madly in love”.
The story was from when actor Phil was at the height of his Corrie fame.
Alison, however, who was just 22 at the time, was not famous and was referred to as a “surf shop girl” in the story.
In the article Phil claimed that he had “bedded 100 women” but was now “in love” with Alison.
Posting the story on the discussion forum, fans went wild at this revelation.
One wrote: “No way!!”
Another added: “How random,”
This Corrie fan said: “I still can’t get my head around this!”
A fourth added: “Small world!”

According to reports the pair dated for five years, Phil telling the Scottish Daily Record: “I’ve never been happier. She is a wonderful girl. I love her to death.”
They reportedly met at a Tenerife bar in March 1995, before splitting in 2000.
Phil confessed: “I was in love with Allie. She’s the only person I’ve ever really loved.
“But she was working in London and I was in Manchester.

“In another life, if I had been a bus driver and she had worked at the local baker’s shop, we would have got married and had kids by now.”
Corrie fans will well remember lothario Des Barnes who graced the cobbles throughout the 90s.
Actor Phil was a regular fixture of the ITV soap from 1990 to 1998 when he quit the show.

On the soap he was married to Natalie Barnes, the Rovers landlady played by Loose Women star Denise Welch.
However, during his time on Coronation Street, Des went onto to also have an off-again romance with Raquel, who was played by the legendary Sarah Lancashire.
Raquel later moved onto her famous screen partner, Curly Watts, but it was Des that played havoc with the pair in a bid to get revenge on Raquel leaving him.
Des even sabotaged their engagement party as an act of jealousy and rage.

Since quitting the cobbles in the late 90s, when his character was killed off, Phil has enjoyed a varied career mixed with a series of personal setbacks.
In 2012, the actor faced bankruptcy after a film he had put his life-saving into in 2008 failed to take off as a result of the financial crisis.
It forced Phil to take money from family and friends as he told the Manchester Evening News: “It was partly-funded by myself but I didn’t have the money to fund the rest of the film.
“Filming came to a grinding halt. It was nearly three-quarters of the way along the line. It has been a difficult time. Three-and-a-half years is a long time to fund myself without any income.
” I have had to get money from family and friends.”
Meanwhile, his former girlfriend Alison joined the soap in 2006, almost a decade after Phil left, and six years after their split.
The actress’ character Carla is best known for being the boss of the knicker factory, Underworld.
Over the last two decades she has been involved in numerous high-profile storylines, from steamy affairs to battles with alcoholism.
This is turn has seen her win numerous awards, including Best Actress at the British Soap Awards in 2012.

Amanda Barrie used to fear that her sexuality would cost her her role on Coronation Street and is certain she would have been sacked if bosses found out

Amanda Barrie used to fear that her sexuality would cost her her role on Coronation Street. The actress, who will celebrate her 90th birthday this weekend, is best-remembered by fans of the world’s longest-running TV soap as Alma Halliwell, and initially appeared in 1981 for a brief stint before appearing regularly from 1988 until 2001.
Over the years, viewers watched the supermarket worker marry fellow legend Mike Baldwin (Johnny Briggs), and will also recall her partnership with Gail Platt (Helen Worth) when they ran the café for a number of years and her long friendship with Gail’s mother Audrey Roberts (Sue Nicholls). In 2001, she left the programme for good when her character succumbed to cancer, and in 2003, Amanda came out as bisexual.
But the TV star, who married former Mirror journalist and crime novelist Hilary Bonner in 2014, is now certain that had she come clean about her sexuality any sooner, she would have been dismissed from the programme, although she appreciates now that she has no evidence to back up this claim.
The Bad Girls actress appeared on Thursday’s Good Morning Britain with Kate Garraway and Ed Balls (Image: ITV)
During an appearance on Thursday’s Good Morning Britain, she told hosts Kate Garraway and Ed Balls: “Somebody shopped me to the press. I should’ve known better but I never kept my life from anybody, all my friends know everything.
“I think people thought it was catching, you were pushed away and whispered about in corners. They would not, and I swear to God, I’ve said this but I can’t back it up, I know that I would’ve been sacked from Coronation Street.
“They would’ve got rid. You couldn’t have said ‘It would’ve been that person who did it or that…’ it would’ve been ‘Oh we don’t want anything to do with that, darling.'”
Once Amanda, who has just released her memoir I’m Still Here, had come out, she actually got a pleasant surprise with the reaction she received, having anticipated the worst.
Amanda starred on Coronation Street as Alma Halliwell, where she famously married Mike Baldwin (Johnny Briggs)(Image: Granada Television)
She explained: “I expected to be stoned in the street, I got a lot of hugs. What was I in such a state about? Because it was just ‘Oh, I see, oh…'” before adding: “You automatically revert to the way you’d always behave, lurking about with your head down editing your life is what you do. You change they, he, she, all that editing…”
She said: “It wouldn’t have been the bosses who caused a problem so much as some of the other cast,” she reveals. ”My close friends like Helen Worth all knew the truth. But you heard other people say certain things….Not naming names.
“Now there are so many LGBTQI characters on the show I often joke they should rename it Canal Street! [after Manchester’s gay bar district]. What happened after I left? It’s not contagious, you know!”

Julie Hogg, aged 22, was a mother to three-year-old son Kevin and wife to husband Andrew. She vanished after working a late shift at a local pizza parlour.
Heartbreakingly, Ann found Julie’s body hidden in the bathroom of her home in January 1990. 80 days earlier, the murderer had concealed Julie’s body behind the bath panel.
TV favourite Sheridan Smith has starred in a number of true crime dramas over the years (Image: ITV)
Jake Davies has appeared in Screw and Cyber Bully but now plays Matthew in I Fought The Law(Image: ITV)
During the show’s lengthy run throughout the 2000s, she also appeared on Fat Friends opposite Emmerdale star Lisa Riley as well as sunny sitcom Benidorm and BBC favourite Gavin & Stacey. She then turned to musical theatre, winning an Olivier Award for her portrayal of Elle Woods, the character made famous by Reese Witherspoon, in the West End production of Legally Blonde.
Further stage credits in Funny Girl and, more recently, Shirley Valentine and Opening Night followed.
But it’s gritty dramas that Sheridan has really made her mark. In 2014, she starred as Cilla Black in Cilla, played a cleaner with a gambling addiction in Cleaning Up and also starred in a number of true crime dramas with her the mother of a young gay man killed by Stephen Port in Four Lives, and as Karen Matthews’ friend Julie Bushby in the BBC drama The Moorside.
Daniel York Loh stars as Sheridan’s on-screen husband but has been seen before in Strangers and the short-lived sitcom Scarborough(Image: ITV)
But Sheridan is not the only famous face to be starring in the much-anticipated drama. She is joined by Enzo Cilenti as DS Mark Braithwaite. He previously starred in Jekyll & Hyde for ITV alongside Hollywood star Richard E. Grant and Strictly Come Dancing’s Natalie Gumede. He also had a main role as Aubrey Hackett in The Last Tycoon opposite Lily Collins, Matt Bomer and Kelsey Grammar and can also be seen alongside Olivia Colman and Dominic West in the 2019 BBC version of Les Miserables.
Esteemed actor Andrew Lancel makes an appearance as Guy Whitburn QC in I Fought The Law, but soap fans are likely to remember him as the villainous Frank Foster on Coronation Street. He appeared as the business associate of Underworld manager Carla Connor (Alison King), and subjected the factory boss to a horrific act of rape.
He was later found dead on the factory floor and it turned out that he had been murdered by his own mother Anne, who was played by Heartbeat favourite Gwen Taylor, after she discovered what he had done. Prior to his stint on the cobbles, he had appeared on Bad Girls and Queer as Folk and has also carved out an illustrious career in theatre having starred in tours of The Sound of Music and Cilla.

The cast is rounded out by Victoria Wyant, who plays the victim in question, as well as Rivals star as Rufus Jones. The actor recently starred as Paul Stratton in the hit Disney+ series and has also starred in The Casual Vacancy and appeared in the likes of Inside No. 9, Beyond Paradise and Black Ops over the years. Fans of Hollyoaks might also recognise Kent Riley, who played Zak Ramsey in the Channel 4 soap.
CBBC fans might also recognise Aimee Kelly, who plays Judith Morden in the drama series. The actress first found fame as a teenager when she played Maddy Smith in the hit supernatural series Wolfblood opposite Bobby Lockwood.
Since she quit the supernatural series more than a decade ago, she has appeared in episodes of Call The Midwife, Grantchester and Holby City. In 2024, she played Sasha in the psychological thriller Platform 7. Others set to appear in the programme, which finishes its run on September 8, are Jack James Riley, Bryony Corrigan, and Buddy Wignall-Ho.
Ann, unhappy with the Cleveland Constabulary’s investigation, took it upon herself to challenge senior officers in a bid to uncover the truth about her daughter Julie’s murder and bring the culprit to justice.
William Dunlop was twice put on trial for Julie’s murder, each time denying his guilt. On both occasions, the jury failed to reach a verdict, leading to his formal acquittal and release.
In 1999, while serving a seven-year sentence for violent offences, Dunlop confessed to a prison officer that he had murdered Julie. At the time, due to the double jeopardy rule, he could not be retried for the murder following his acquittal.
Ann, who also serves as a consultant on I Fought the Law, expressed her support for the ITV series and shared her delight that actress Sheridan would be portraying her, stating she was “overwhelmed”.
“I am very pleased that Hera Pictures will tell the story of my campaign to overturn the Double Jeopardy Law. My daughter’s killer was wrongfully acquitted, and a number of years later confessed to her murder, for which he could only be prosecuted for perjury due to the 800-year-old Double Jeopardy Law. I wasn’t going to let this stand in my way of getting justice for Julie.
Corrie Lee Stavers’ family said the pain of losing him was impossible to put into words
A fairground worker who died at a seaside carnival will be loved endlessly, his family have said.
Corrie Lee Stavers, 28 and from Sunderland, suffered fatal head injuries at Spanish City, in Whitley Bay, at about 14:15 BST on Saturday, Northumbria Police said.
His family said the “pain of losing him so suddenly” was “impossible to put into words”.
The Health and Safety Executive has been informed and the funfair, which was due to run over the Bank Holiday weekend, will remain closed. Fairground bosses said it was a “tragic accident”.
Mr Stavers’ next of kin are being supported by specialist officers, Northumbria Police said.
In a statement released through the force, his family said: “It’s with broken hearts that we share the devastating news that our beloved Corrie has passed away.
“He was tragically taken from us in an accident while working on a fairground ride.
“None of us were prepared for this, and the pain of losing him so suddenly is impossible to put into words.
“Our lives will never be the same without him, but his memory will live on in our hearts forever.
“We love you endlessly, Corrie, and we miss you more than words can ever say.”
An air ambulance was deployed to the funfair at Spanish City in Whitley Bay
Earlier, Turners Funfairs posted on Facebook that it was “heartbroken” that “one of our much-loved colleagues has sadly passed away following a tragic accident”.
Its statement continued: “Our team is like a family and we are all deeply affected by this loss.
“As a mark of respect, Spanish City Funfair will remain closed this weekend, while we take the time to grieve together.”
The North East Ambulance Service said it had dispatched an emergency ambulance crew as well as a helicopter.
An off-duty medic had supported Mr Stavers until crews arrived.
However, police said despite the best efforts of medical staff, he was declared dead “a short time later”.
Anyone with information has been asked to contact the force.

This Friday, we’re featuring everything from River Island’s planned closure of 33 high street stores, to the tragic story of how slain teen Harvey Willgoose’s mother found out about his death.
In other news, we’re also taking a look at how two cruise ship tourists died in bad weather, the depressing reality of the Magaluf ‘party strip’ in 2025, and the sad news of the death of Corrie icon Frank Grimes.
Harvey Willgoose: Mum learned schoolboy son had been killed through ‘RIP’ post
(Image: Facebook)
Earlier this afternoon, our UK News team shared the story of how Harvey Willgoose’s mum screamed in horror when she found out her son had been murdered at school. And she said she will forever be haunted with guilt because she urged the 15-year-old to return to the “lions’ den”.
Caroline Willgoose, 51 and her husband Mark, 52, spoke to The Mirror about only discovering their “amazing” son had died after seeing a social media post saying ‘RIP Harvey’. Despite their grief the couple have vowed to fight on until knife arches are installed in schools. “Children are going to school scared,” she told the Mirror. “This cannot be allowed to happen again.”
The defendant, a fellow pupil also aged 15 who cannot be named, had already admitted manslaughter but denied murder, saying he lost control and did not remember stabbing Harvey twice. But after more than 14 hours of deliberations the jury convicted him of murder with a majority verdict of 11-1. He is expected to be sentenced later this year.
River Island to shut 33 stores with hundreds to lose their jobs
River Island plans to shut 33 shops(Image: PA)
Our Money team reported earlier today that major high street chain River Island has announced it will shut dozens of stores – leaving hundreds of people jobless. The move, part of a long-in-the-works “restructuring plan” worked up to prevent the chain from collapsing into administration, will see River Island shutter 33 shops and pay reduced rents on a further 71.
The clothing retailer is looking to secure further funding later this year to avoid falling into millions of pounds’ worth of debt. Landlords are being asked to cut rents for three years and potentially stop payments completely on some sites in a bid to stem losses. Matthew Weaver KC, for River Island, told a hearing on Friday that the company “simply has not been able to reverse” a trend of financial difficulty as the restructuring plan was approved by the High Court in the UK.
Frank Grimes dead: Coronation Street actor dies after short illness
Frank Grimes as Barry Connor in the ITV soap Coronation Street
Our Showbiz team shared the sad story this afternoon that Coronation Street actor Frank Grimes has died at the age of 78. The actor died following a short illness, with The Irish Cultural Centre paying tribute to the acting legend.
Frank starred as Barrington “Barry” Connor in the ITV soap at regular intervals between 2008 to 2015 and played the father of Paul Connor, Liam Connor and Michelle Connor. Barry even made a return in 2015 to attend Michelle’s wedding to Steve McDonald. In all, he appeared in more than 50 episodes over the years and was a key character in the Connor family.
In a statement, they said: “Frank was undoubtedly one of Ireland’s greatest actors, he was a dearly loved friend of the ICC’s and over the past three decades, he trod the ICC’s stage on so many occasions.”
Two cruise ship tourists killed as gales batter Greece

Our World News team reported that two cruise ship tourists have died at sea in Greece after strong winds battered a holiday hotspot – causing travel chaos for thousands of travellers.
A man and a woman, both from Vietnam, were found on the Sarakiniko beach on the popular holiday island of Milos. The coastguard confirmed the travellers died following a tragic incident on Friday.
A spokesperson for the local coastguard said: “The man and woman were found unconscious in the sea and were taken to the local health centre.”
At the start of the season, the sight of vacant sun loungers was telling. What’s more, pub landlords confessed to adjusting opening hours in response to the changing tourist demographic. This downturn in visitor numbers is attributed to stringent measures against disorderly holidaymakers.

Sue Jenkins and Richard Fleeshman both appeared on Coronation Street – but many fans had no idea about their real-life connection
Coronation Street has seen more than its fair share of real-life family members treading the cobbles, with cousins Brooke Vincent and Ellie Leach among those who’ve found fame on the show.
The late Rick Neelan (played by Greg Wood) was actually the real-life brother of footballer Tommy Orpington (Matt Milburn).
However, they’re not the only ones with familial ties both on and off the screen. Fans were recently surprised to discover a mother and son duo who appeared on the soap years ago.
In 1985, Sue Jenkins joined the cast of Coronation Street as Gloria Todd, a regular character who worked as a barmaid at the iconic Rovers Return. She also shared scenes with Julie Goodyear, who famously played landlady Bet Lynch, reports the Daily Star.
Beyond her stint on Corrie, Sue portrayed Jackie Corkhill in Brookside for nine years from 1992 to 2001, and made a brief appearance in Emmerdale in 2008 as Bonnie Drinkwater.
Sue played Gloria on the soap(Image: Granada TV)
Interestingly, Sue’s son is Richard Fleeshman, who also had a role on Coronation Street.
Richard played Craig Harris, joining the cast in 2002 as part of the Harris family, who were hiding under the witness protection programme.
His character, Craig, had some significant storylines, reports Leicestershire Live.
He embraced a goth lifestyle, much to his father’s dismay, and became Rosie Webster’s (Helen Flanagan) first boyfriend.
The plot thickened when Katy Harris, Craig’s sister, killed their father after a heated row about her secret relationship with Martin Platt.
Her real-life son also appeared on the soap(Image: Unknown)
Their mother, Angela Harris, tried to shield Katy, but overwhelmed by guilt, Katy ended her own life.
In the aftermath, Craig planned to escape to Berlin with Rosie, but ultimately left alone, saying goodbye to the cobbles in 2006 for good.
The revelation of Sue and Richard’s time on Corrie left fans gobsmacked. On X, formerly known as Twitter, one viewer posted about Sue’s stint on Corrie.
Fans have been left floored(Image: Granada Television)
Another fan replied: “That’s Richard fleeshmans mum!”
Another person remarked: “Wow, all this time watching and I never knew that, I can see her son in that photo now.”
A third chimed in: “Her real life son played Craig Harris, son of Psycho Tommy!”

The soaps are lining up big scenes this coming week, with Emmerdale danger for Robert Sugden, a devastating Coronation Street drug plot and an EastEnders exit teased

There’s some really big moments coming up this week ahead on Emmerdale, EastEnders and Coronation Street(Image: ITV)
One soap is about to air a massive week of episodes as they tackle an LSD storyline, and the serious consequences of drug use. We’ll see characters in danger, mystery scenes yet to be revealed and trouble for one character.
EastEnders could be hinting at an exit too following the news Bernadette Taylor would be leaving the BBC soap. New spoilers hint at trouble involving the character, so it’s perhaps a hint of how she will exit the show.
While it’s being kept a mystery on what actually happens, what we do know is that John wants to get rid of his brother after seeing him as a threat. Spoilers revealed that after Robert is drugged by his date, John drives off with Robert in the back of his van.
It’s not been made clear if John has orchestrated the drugging or not, but he’s soon very much involved. Robert soon finds himself at the mercy of killer John it would seem, or at least that’s what the soap has teased, as he’s left “lifeless”.
Images see John looming with a syringe in his hand with Robert laying down in the van. But will John really go as far as to kill his own sibling? While spoilers have hinted Robert wakes up, it’s yet to be revealed if there’s more scenes with John or if he remains in danger.
EastEnders exit ‘sealed’

Bernadette Taylor’s exit storyline may have been teased, as she’s asked by cousin Felix Baker for her seal of approval over his new romance with Johnny Carter. But with her reluctant to after him covering up the murder of her brother Keanu, something Felix knows nothing about, will it come back to haunt all those involved?
Theres a strange discovery though when some weird invoices are spotted linked to the Panesar account, which Bernie has access to. She dismissed the concerns, but soon she’s questioned once more. As Ravi and Suki go to confront Bernie about the irregularities, will they make a discovery and is this linked to Bernie’s looming exit?
Coronation Street LSD horror
One soap is about to air a massive week of episodes as they tackle an LSD storyline(Image: ITV)
There’s dramatic scenes starting next week with the soap set to tackle an LSD storyline. The repercussions could be massive as multiple characters are caught up in the drama.
There’s potentially devastating scenes ahead as disaster hits the street after a house party. Aadi Alahan decides to throw a gathering, only for troublemaker Brody Michaelis to bring a bottle of LSD.
Aadi spots the drugs and kicks Brody out of the party, leading to chaos as he refuses to go before finally fleeing. But Aadi makes a decision he could live to regret when he, Nina and Summer decide to drink the LSD.
Aadi leaves his unattended only for someone else to accidentally drink it. What follows is a dramatic turn of events with Nina and Summer high only to be left terrified when they hear sirens, with it hinted something bad has happened.
As for another resident, the person who took the third cup of LSD is left in a bad way and their condition deteriorates.

An evening among friends spirals out of control for the Corrie teens next week
Soap fans are set for another rollercoaster next week as some fan favourite characters will be left in the balance.
In Emmerdale, John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) is determined to keep half-brother Robert (Ryan Hawley) away from his marriage with Aaron Dingle – but could he claim another life as a result?
Over in Coronation Street, Weatherfield residents are trying to move on from the shocking death of PC Craig Tinker, prompting Bernie Winter (Jane Hazlegrove) to urge Aadi Alahan (Adam Hussain) to throw a party on the cobbles. But in true Corrie fashion, the night is set to spiral.
Much like ITV viewers, BBC One regulars will face their fair share of ups and downs in EastEnders with Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) struggling to help Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley). But there’s more drama on the way in Neighbours, Hollyoaks and Home and Away.
