Coronation Street’s explosive Christmas: Maggie’s revenge, Becky strikes and sad death

Coronation Street is lining up explosive and jaw-dropping moments this Christmas period, as spoilers for the ITV soap have teased drama for several families and characters

Fans can expect a chaotic Christmas on Coronation Street, with danger, revenge and bombshells.

Bosses have said that Weatherfield “explodes” as secrets and revelations come to light. Residents will be left reeling, and fans will apparently be “on the edge of their seats”.

Maggie Driscoll, who is about to feature in a flashback episode, is front and centre this Christmas. Her act of revenge sees a group of characters brought together in dramatic fashion.

Tensions will rise in The Rovers as Eva’s wracked with guilt over a secret she’s been keeping, and her young daughter Susie’s innocent wish for a sibling sends her spiralling. When Maggie’s suspicions are piqued by a hidden letter and a tender moment between Eva and Adam Barlow, she takes action.

Maggie sets a plan into motion wanting Eva out of her son Ben’s life for good. Of course it’s Christmas Day, so what would be more dramatic than a Christmas dinner being interrupted by bombshells and twists?

With Adam and his partner Alya Nazir suddenly invited, Maggie also extends an invite to her grandson Will’s athletics coach Megan and her new flame Daniel Osbourne. Of course Maggie has no idea Megan is grooming teenager Will.

As an explosive Christmas showdown occurs, there’s “gifts with shattering consequences”, accusations, revelations and a brutal attack on one of the guests. As someone is left unconscious in the ginnel, will they be okay and who is responsible?

There’s more danger too as ‘villain’ Becky Swain takes drastic action to get her way. Having torn her ex Lisa Swain’s relationship with her new fiancée Carla Connor apart, Becky tries once more to win her back.

She’s desperate to get her family back, but amid her involvement in the attack on DI Costello and Kit Green being onto her, she’s under threat. It’s said terrifying scenes and manipulation will feature, as Becky is driven to drastic measures.

Costello still faces jeopardy, while Carla has gone AWOL after her split – seemingly living her best life in Lanzarote. But is all as it seems? As a mystery about Carla begins to unfold, Becky works on convincing Lisa and daughter Betsy that they can have the perfect Christmas.

As her lies begin to unravel though, it’s on Kit to figure out the truth about Becky, Costello’s jumbled messages, and how it all links. Christmas will also see the build-up to Debbie Webster’s wedding to Ronnie Bailey.

A shocking death is set to rock the family, with Carl Webster left devastated. It’s teased that Debbie could be hiding a secret, while Carl’s own lies could come out in the open.

Finally this Christmas, Todd Grimshaw’s abuse ordeal at the hands of partner Theo Silverton escalates. With Todd isolated and heartbroken, pal and ex Billy Mayhew becomes concerned for Todd, so will Theo be exposed? Also, The Platts gather round and watch Gail Platt’s Christmas message to the family a year on from her exit.

Coronation Street star reacts to Lisa and Carla split and teases Becky’s comeuppance

Coronation Street’s Lisa Swain actress Vicky Myers has shared her thoughts on Carla Connor’s future with her character, and whether a comeuppance is on the way for Becky Swain

After the heartbreaking news that Coronation Street‘s Carla Connor would end things with Lisa Swain, Swarla fans are no doubt desperate to find out if they’ll reconcile.

Now, Lisa actress Vicky Myers has teased where her character’s thoughts are in terms of her future with Carla. She also hinted that Lisa’s ex Becky Swain, who has deliberately tried to tear Lisa and Carla apart, could finally face a comeuppance.

With Lisa and colleague Kit Green’s trust growing, might Kit be the one to make her see Becky isn’t telling the full truth? Vicky’s hopeful that Lisa will wise up to Becky’s lies, while she made it clear that as far as Lisa is concerned, Carla is the one for her.

She shared: “At this point she’s numb, there’s just so much going on. She obviously still has a love for Becky, but where Carla’s concerned she’s never known anything like it. The relationship that she’s experienced, the family dynamic, the maturity that’s been brought out in Betsy since Carla has been in her life.

“Her family was complete as far as Lisa was concerned and then this bomb went off and shattered everything. At this point, I don’t think Lisa has any idea how she’s feeling, she’s so confused, her heart’s broken.

READ MORE: Emmerdale star warns fan favourite is ‘too far gone’ as he addresses soap futureREAD MORE: Coronation Street star admits ‘dangerous’ Theo’s abuse is ‘pretty horrible’ to play

“There’s hope there, but what does she do about Becky? What does she do about Betsy? At this moment in time, Lisa feels she can’t do anything right.” On whether Lisa could reunite with Becky, Vicky hinted it won’t happen.

She said: “I think the love for Carla is too deep at this stage. But Lisa has been so manipulated by Costello, with him saying you don’t know how hard Becky tried to get hold of you and he put the block on it.

“So we’ve got to remember that as far as Lisa is concerned, yes there might be holes in Becky’s story, but there’s the potential here that if she picks this scab, that a whole 20 years of her life may have been a lie. I think her judgement is also blurred by the heartbreak she’s going through with Carla and the fact that she’s being told by her superior that this was all the above board, it was an order from above.”

Lisa could soon have doubts about Becky though. Vicky explained: “There are definitely some doubts creeping in because Becky’s story doesn’t add up with how freely she’s walking around. I think we saw that on Halloween when she said, ‘aren’t you supposed to be undercover. Aren’t you supposed to be keeping a low profile?’

“So obviously those things are a definite question mark for Lisa, because she’s a detective and she used to be a very good one. But again, with that, she knows that the order’s come from above and she’s aware of this gang and how notorious they are.”

She went on: “Credit to Amy [Cudden, who plays Becky], she’s playing a fantastic villain with such subtlety and nuances and she’s a brilliant wind up merchant. She’s a great character to play but everyone loves it when the villain gets their comeuppance so let’s hope that is the case.”

It seems there’s more to come from Lisa and Kit too, and they could rumble Becky together. Vicky shared: “I think there’s a lot that’s unsaid and unspoken between the two of them. Despite the way that they talk to each other, and even though Lisa is his superior, I think Lisa sees a lot of herself in him and she knows he’s a more than competent detective, she believes in him.

“I think she actually likes his cheekiness, his directness, his slight tinge of arrogance. He’s actually somebody that she can work with even though they often disagree. It’s also somebody that lives in her community and I think she absolutely cares for him.

“It’s great to see them working together, but I also love it when they’re at each other’s throats like siblings, their little one liners and the way they can wind each other up. But also she absolutely has his back and she’s loyal to him and I think he feels the same.”

Coronation Street teases danger for Todd and character goes missing

Coronation Street spoilers have teased more concern for Todd Grimshaw next week as Theo Silverton fumes, while a character’s disappearance leaves one resident confused

There’s worrying scenes on Coronation Street next week, as Todd Grimshaw once again faces the wrath of Theo Silverton.

Todd is struggling with the constant running Theo is forcing him to do, and so James Bailey pops round and offers to help Todd after dropping off some equipment. While Theo and Todd are preparing lunch, Todd appears to reveal he’s suffering from aches and strains in his legs.

In the preview clip, Todd is on the floor in his dressing gown while James is trying to ease the pains in his legs. The pair are joking around, as Todd suggests he’s torturing him in exchange for an invite to lunch.

While this is all going on, Theo is staring darkly towards them both, his infuriation building. Todd notices this and looks alarmed, and swiftly makes a point of saying James can’t stay.

READ MORE: EastEnders ‘gives away’ who Jasmine really is after Anthony twistREAD MORE: Emmerdale fans ‘rumble’ who brings down Celia and Ray as character left to die

James realises he has somewhere he needs to be, and jokes about Todd making sure he’s dressed next time and putting some pants on. As Todd laughs, Theo is not amused and just stares, while saying goodbye to an oblivious James.

When Todd gets up, he laughs and comments that his legs are feeling a lot better. But as he stares at Theo, his face drops as he quickly realises Theo is unimpressed.

Fearing the consequences after Theo’s recent outbursts, as well as his controlling and manipulative behaviour, Todd watches on as Theo’s face continues to darken. But is Todd in danger?

Also next week, Kit Green grows concerned about his boss DI Costello who appears to go missing. At the station, he’s noted that Costello hasn’t shown up for work and it’s not like him.

As time passes and he’s still a no-show, Kit asks a colleague about him, and wonders where he is. While the colleague doesn’t seem to be alarmed, it’s clear Kit is a bit concerned by Costello being AWOL and not declaring his whereabouts.

Of course Kit has every reason to be worried, as spoilers have revealed that Costello is attacked next week. When Kit finds out, he’s quick to inform his colleague Lisa Swain about their boss’ state.

That’s not all though, as he soon shares his concerns with Lisa that her ex Becky Swain may be responsible after recent drama between the pair. But how will Lisa react to this claim, and might Kit be on to something? If he is, he may want to watch out before taking Becky on.

Coronation Street star breaks silence after abrupt soap exit

A Coronation Street favourite has addressed his shock exit from the ITV soap after it emerged his final scenes had already aired without an announcement from show bosses

Coronation Street star Jack Carroll has broken his silence from his abrupt exit from the soap earlier this summer. The 27-year-old actor joined the ITV cast in 2023 as Bobby Crawford, the half nephew of Carla Connor and son of convict of Rob Donovan, and was last seen on screen in May this year heading off on holiday.

In June, viewers learned the character had left Weatherfield for good during a conversation with Lauren Bolton and Betsy Swain. Despite speculation that Jack wasn’t going to return to set, confirmation of the low-key departure left some viewers shocked, and the actor has now revealed how he feels about the way it went down.

READ MORE: Amazon tablet plummets from £90 to £20 but Black Friday deal is ‘selling fast’

As well as saying he was “grateful” that Bobby wasn’t permanently killed off, the former Britain’s Got Talent star explained that he was actually happy to leave without any drama or scandal.

“That seems to be the trend in the way that they do exits now, it’s a bit more low key because it gives everybody a bit more flexibility if you need to arrange some pieces of the jigsaw in the future,” he told The Sun.

In June, a source told The Mirror that “the time has come” for Bobby to bid farewell, adding, “Actor Jack enjoyed his time on the soap, but it’s time to move on. Viewers won’t see the character exit the street as he’s already left, with Jack filming his final scenes some time ago.”

Bradford-born Jack first found fame as a comedian when he appeared on the seventh series of Britain’s Got Talent at 14, finishing up in second place.

He first appeared on Coronation Street in 2023, when his character Bobby came to stay with his aunt Carla, the half maternal sister of his dad Rob, who was previously convicted of the murder of Tina McIntyre.

Elaborating on his exit after 18 months, Jack, who has cerebral palsy, said he was excited to return to his comedy routes and put the spotlight back on disability in a positive manner.

He also praised the Coronation Street writers for “distilling down” the essence of his stand-up persona when he filmed his early scenes, adding: “That’s probably a good primer on what to expect as well, if you come and see me on the tour.”

Given his character is alive and well and was spared a gruesome end on the show, Jack also said he wouldn’t rule out a return, and said he was grateful that any future decisions hadn’t been taken off the table completely.

He added that the “circumstances would have to be right” and he couldn’t imagine a reason why he’d say no if the opportunity to step back onto the cobbles arose.

Coronation Street legend set for shock Christmas return a year after sensational exit

A Coronation Street icon is set to return to the famous ITV cobbles this festive period after making an emotional exit exactly a year ago

Coronation Street fans are set for the dramatic return of a legend of the cobbles this Christmas. And it will mark exactly a year since they initially left.

Former mainstay Gail Chadwick is set for a return during the festive special. It will mark a year since the star, played by Helen Worth, married Jesse Chadwick and headed for a new life in France.

Fans of the ITV show were devastated by her exit after a long-running stint on the soap, spanning back to 1974. And now, she is set for a one-off appearance, which is sure to delight the show’s avid viewers.

Details are still being kept close to the chests of producers. However a TV insider has said she could be about to connect with her family again for the festive period.

The source told The Sun: “It could be more timely as the Platts find themselves in yet another drama, one that they’ve had to deal with by themselves since the Platts’ matriarch moved abroad.”

They continued: “It’s a move which is guaranteed to thrill soap fans, who wondered whether we’d ever catch a glimpse of show favourite Gail on the cobbles again.”

Helen, 73, bowed out from the soap as Gail last year after an astonishing 50 year. She told viewers she’d been part of “the most wonderful show in the world“.

Since making her debut in Corrie 50 years ago the actress has been involved in an array of hard-hitting and juicy storylines. Her biggest lines have involved murders, steamy affairs and the perennial drama surrounding her three kids, Nick (Ben Price), Sarah and David.

When she finally left her role, Helen posted a message on social media to thanks her fans and their long-time support. She said at the time: “There’ll be more Platt stories, and I hope you’ll be watching.”

In a statement announcing her exit, she said: “This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world.

“I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers, who were very kind and understanding.”

In the build-up to Christmas, fans are set to watch dark scenes for Todd Grimshaw next week. It comes as his abusive partner Theo Silverton takes action against him once again.

The scenes result in a character outside of the relationship becoming suspicious which leads to a falling out. Later, Todd accuses Theo of rail-roading him into doing a half marathon.

However, Theo claims to him that it’s for his own good and they’ll be going for another run later as part of their training.

Coronation Street fans ‘uncomfortable’ after grooming plot takes worrying turn

Coronation Street viewers were left feeling ‘uncomfortable’ following Friday night’s episode after an already-controversial plot on the ITV soap took a worrying turn

Coronation Street viewers were left feeling ‘uncomfortable’ following Friday night’s episode. The world’s longest-running TV soap just welcomed back fan favourite Eva Price (Catherine Tydlesley) last month, and she came with her new family in tow, but it wasn’t long before the drama kicked off.

Eva now runs the Rovers with her partner Ben Driscoll and his mother Maggie, and they live there with Ben’s sons Will and Ollie, as well as Eva’s little girl Susie. But it was soon revealed that that 15-year-old Will has been having an affair with his athletics coach Megan, whom he had been seeing when he initially refused to move from Hull. The family are yet to discover this, but are well aware of Will’s fondness for his teacher and things took a turn for the worse after he exhibited some worrying behaviour.

In the latest instalment of the ITV soap, Megan and Will arrived back from a trip that they had claimed was for a sports competition and she tried to end things with him but he was having none of it and stormed off out of the car. Later on, Ben caught her on the street and insisted on giving her some petrol money before inviting her in for dinner. Megan reluctantly went and officially rescinded her duties as Will’s coach in front of the family.

READ MORE: Coronation Street’s controversial grooming plot takes sinister twistREAD MORE: Corrie fans divided over ‘weird’ grooming plot but ‘work out’ who’s also involved

Over their meal, Will pretended that a girlfriend from Hull had dumped him that morning, to which his grandmother said: “The surest way for a lad to get over a girl is to get over the next one, she must have been doolally to split up with you!” Will insisted that it wasn’t anyone’s fault, and Megan, unable to take it anymore, made her excuses and left.

Will became insistent that he would never get another coach like Megan, and needed to be in Hull for his athletics. While Ben was coming round to the idea of Will moving back to Hull alone, Eva and Maggie were dead against the idea. Ben tried to put his foot down, but Eva and his mother went behind his back and made other arrangements. Pretty soon, Megan joined the family in the back room of the pub again, where Maggie explained: “You might’ve been happy to abandon Will, but we weren’t. I called Megan, we had a few drinks, and we found a solution.”

Megan said: “Your gran’s paying me to come over here two days a week for some one-on-one training sessions!” Maggie then insisted that money was no object and she was just pleased to see Will happy again. But viewers were outraged at the twist, as this means that Megan will be sticking around to continue her illicit relationship with the teenager.

Flocking to social media, one wrote: “#Corrie how old is that trainer, he’s only 15, find it an uncomfortable storyline,” whilst another said: “Ben to Megan: “Will trusts you.” Oh, Ben, you have no idea [sad emoji].”

A third raged: “Ben wants to thanks Megan for everything she has done. He wouldn’t want to be thanking her for everything she has done if he knew that she is doing his son [vomit emoji]” and a fourth added: “It’s really worrying how Eva & Ben trust Megan. Just like how in real life parents trust adults around their kids, not knowing that they could be predators!”

Actress Beth Nixon, who is making her television debut with the role, recently teased that her alter-ego is set to get a job at the local secondary school, and will strike up some sort of relationship with fellow teacher Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard), who is the son of Ken Barlow, all in attempt to cover her tracks and make her young lover jealous.

She said: “She’s a maths teacher and PE coach, she coaches Will and does athletics on the side. She meets Daniel when she’s in Weatherfield training Will, and then he gets her the job at Weatherfield High. So she eventually moves to be closer to Will and becomes a PE teacher.

“I think she’s calculated with it because, one, it’s a good cover story. But two, she’s also able to make Will jealous and further manipulate him, further deepening his obsession. But I think that over time, she does develop some kind of feelings for Daniel and she does get emotionally involved with him, and it’s not just a cover like she’s telling Will.”

“But obviously, she’s just getting herself into more and more of a mess because if she does eventually develop feelings for Daniel, she can’t then leave Will because it’s all going to come out, and she needs to silence him, keep him quiet.

“So she’s kind of spinning all these plates and having to juggle all these different things, which adds to her stress. She’s like a duck, calm, cool, collected on the surface, but underneath she is going crazy.”

Coronation Street’s Carl Webster’s comeuppance ‘sealed’ after sick Debbie betrayal

Coronation Street fans are desperate for Carl Webster to face his downfall for his recent villainous ways, including a sickening twist with his sister Debbie Webster

Fans of Coronation Street think a downfall is set for villain Carl Webster, as he sunk to new lows this week.

The brother of Kevin and Debbie Webster has been up to all sorts, from dodgy car stealing schemes and fake MOTs, as well as his affair with sister-in-law Abi Franklin. With Carl also having a secret romance with James Bailey behind Abi’s back, and him also being behind the hit-and-run that injured Tyrone Dobbs, fans are eager to see him punished.

But his latest dark behaviour could be his cruelest decision yet, and it’s left sickened fans wanting him gone. Carl has been getting closer to his sister Debbie, and clearly wants access to her business accounts at the hotel.

Amid Debbie’s dementia diagnosis and her becoming forgetful, vile scenes have shown Carl tricking her and trying to get her out of the way. Wanting access to the accounts no doubt for the money, fans fear he will end up fleecing his own sister.

This and the fact he’s cruelly using her diagnosis against her at a time where she’s vulnerable, has left fans horrified. Many have called it the final straw and are hoping he gets found out soon.

The ongoing storyline has sparked speculation that it will lead to a big comeuppance for Carl, perhaps at Christmas or beyond. Fans are now trying to figure out who will expose Carl and who will bring him down.

As Kevin and Abi were named as potential suspects behind his downfall, other fans wondered if Debbie or her partner Ronnie Bailey, or even fling James, will stop him for once and for all. Taking to social media, one fan said: “Cant stand him. Someone has to catch him.”

Another viewer said: “Is he going to get caught out for EVERYTHING at Christmas? Tyrone, Debbie, Abi, James, they’ll all want a piece of him!”

A third fan wrote: “Debbie must have accountants checking the hotel books. Surely there will be investigations if things don’t add up. What about the other hotel staff too? They would notice dodgy goings on.”

Another fan said: “I think Debbie has her suspicions about him wanting access to the hotel’s finances. She should give him limited access and give the same access to Ronnie so he can keep an eye out for anything dodgy. Then when she confronts Carl, with Ronnie backing her, he can’t claim she’s confused because of her dementia.”

Coronation Street phone call scene ‘gives away Cassie’s secret link to Becky’

Coronation Street fans are convinced Cassie Plummer and Becky Swain are linked in some way, and now a scene on the ITV soap featuring a phone call has added fuel to the theory

Fans think there’s a secret link between two Coronation Street characters, and the latest episode may have ‘confirmed’ this.

Cassie Plummer spoke about helping someone with business in Spain, before speaking in Spanish on the phone. With fans already suspecting prior to this that Cassie could be somehow linked to villain Becky Swain, this scene left fans wondering if it was a given now.

After all, Becky returned from the dead months ago and it was revealed for the past four years, she has been hiding out in Spain. She’s now being told she has to return there to stop her cover being blown, with Becky wanting daughter Betsy to go with her, as well as her ex Lisa Swain.

All the sudden talk about Spain, and a scene last week that involved both Cassie and Becky, has sparked a theory that they secretly know each other. So when Cassie spoke in Spanish and revealed all about her link to the country, fans wondered if this was proof that she and Becky know each other, and that Cassie knows all about her dodgy dealings.

READ MORE: Coronation Street fans ‘work out’ Glenda’s new love interest – and he’s a familiar faceREAD MORE: Coronation Street’s Jodie Prenger promises more comedy after criticism over dark scenes

Taking to social media, one fan said: “Cassie speaking Spanish and knowing someone in Spain… helped him with his business… she must know Becky!! The links are starting to link.”

Another fan agreed: “If this isn’t a clue to Cassie knowing or recognising dodgy business in Spain *couch* Becky I don’t know what is. Surely this isn’t coincidence.”

A third fan added: “So Cassie can speak Spanish and helped an ex out with his ‘business’ in Spain. Oh she is so gonna be the one to reveal backhand Becky’s dodgy dealings!”

A final comment read: “So, Cassie’s talking about a Spanish boyfriend, Peter’s name being dropped recently, and Becky’s been living in Alicante. Is this all a coincidence??”

It follows another theory suggesting Cassie might know Becky, and could trigger her downfall. Fans noted her watching as Carla Connor confronted Becky for kissing Lisa Swain, and she seemed very interested.

Viewers may recall Cassie was sleeping rough while she was taking drugs. She’s now in recovery, but could Cassie and Becky have crossed paths when Cassie was on drugs?

One theory is that Becky was her dealer as others wondered if she arrested her. A fan commented: “Cassie looked like she thinks she’s seen Becky somewhere before!”

Another said: “Right it can’t just be me, it’s going to transpire Cassie knows Becky somehow isn’t it? ISN’T IT?!” A third fan wrote: “That was a look of recognition for Cassie surely. Has Becky arrested her in the past?”

A theory suggested: “Oh she’s come across her before in her past… drugs?” as another read: “I reckon she was a mate of that Tia and was in the shadows and witnessed her murder/death.” A further tweet said: “Sold her drugs is more like it.”

The theories kept on coming with one reading: “Has Becky arrested her at some point?” as someone suggested they met in Spain. A final tweet said: “I’m thinking Cassie may have had some dealings with Rebecca in the past.”

Coronation Street’s Becky’s sinister plan for Carla ‘solved by fans’ after odd remark

Coronation Street fans believe Becky Swain may have bugged Carla Connor’s home in a bid to get dirt on her and split her and Lisa Swain up, with her intent on getting her family back

Viewers are concerned for Carla Connor on Coronation Street, with fears that Becky Swain is targeting her.

While it’s clear Becky is trying to oust ‘love rival’ Carla from her ex Lisa Swain’s life, in a bid to win her back, new scenes have teased she could be planning something sinister. A scene on Monday night left fans baffled, and alarmed after Becky made an odd comment.

Becky was winding Carla up, trying to tell her Lisa was still in love with her and that they would get back together. Carla very calmly made it clear to Becky that Lisa only had eyes for her, and they would stay together as Becky’s old life was gone.

It seems Becky is a little delusional though, smugly telling Carla that “it was all in the eyes” and that Lisa kissed her, even wearing a top she bought her years ago. Carla was stunned at just how wrong Becky was getting it all, reminding her that she and Lisa were together in their new home, and that Becky was her past.

READ MORE: Coronation Street writers ‘busted’ over ‘inconsistency’ for legendary characterREAD MORE: Catherine Tyldesley says Coronation Street boss’ huge plans for show made her return

It’s then that Becky started making jibes at Carla’s own past, referencing stuff about her exes and her alcohol issues. It’s stuff Becky and even Lisa were not around for, and Becky shouldn’t really know about.

She is a police officer so perhaps she did some digging, but chances are she’s not allowed at the police station. Perhaps Betsy told her about the stuff, if she knows any of it.

Becky also made a comment in a different scene, this time to Lisa where she commented that if Carla wasn’t around, they’d be back together. The way Becky said it was almost the same as what Carla had said to Lisa prior.

It left fans wondering if Becky had bugged Carla’s house, and was listening into conversations. One fan posted online: “Oh so Becky’s bugged No.6 then… ‘if she wasn’t around…you don’t have to say it, it’s enough for me just to know’. HOW DO YOU KNOW?????

“And using that very specific wording that… the same that Carla used the night before?? That can’t just be coincidence?” Another fan agreed: “Ohhhh, you could be into something with this!!”

A third fan said: “Oh she has defo planted bugs 100% there is no way she said that line the exact way Carla said it as a coincidence.” A fourth fan added: “That is why we have the bedroom set? Scene of her watching them and listening in.”

The comments kept being repeated, with one fan said: “Exactly… How else would she know those words plus knowing full well Carla said this to Lisa, she heard it.” A final tweet said: “Wouldn’t be surprised.”

Catherine Tyldesley says Coronation Street boss’ huge plans for show made her return

Eva Price has burst back onto Coronation Street and much-loved actress Catherine Tyldesley says the future couldn’t be more exciting for the soap as she opened up on her anxiety

Soap favourite Catherine Tyldesley feared her chances of ever returning to Coronation Street were in danger after she kept saying no to bosses – but now she thinks the show going in an ‘old school’ direction will keep the critics at bay.

Catherine is back on the Cobbles as feisty Eva Price following a seven-year absence, and admits she was incredibly nervous about reprising her role. The actress finally told producers yes after hearing their plans for the future and telling them she didn’t want her character involved in any cheating scandals.

Eva left Weatherfield behind in 2018, but now she’s back with some new faces. Joined by husband Ben Driscoll, played by Aaron McCusker, mother-in-law “from hell” Maggie [Pauline McLynn] and their blended family she is also the queen of the Rovers Return – and said the pressure of following in the footsteps of legendary landladies also added to her anxiety.

READ MORE: Coronation Street writer fumes over character’s ‘ridiculous’ returnREAD MORE: Coronation Street star at centre of red hot romance hints at reality TV debut

She said it was the perfect time to come back to the ITV soap and was sold as soon as producer Katie Brooks explained where the programme was heading. Catherine spoke to the Mirror as she juggles being a working mum and missing important family moments.

The 42-year-old said: “It’s been incredible to be back. You are like a family when you work at Corrie. We’ve all really make the effort to stay in touch, cast and crew, so it’s I just feel incredibly lucky and I’ve been made to feel super welcome. I needed that because I was really nervous. I was genuinely, really nervous because it’s been a long time.

“I’ve had to say no a few times. I was worried they’d just stop asking! That’s why I emailed them after having to reject the chance those times. I just said ‘I love the show and said I loved playing Eva, so please, please always ask me… and at some point, further down the line, hopefully the time will be right’.

“Kate [Brooks] is passionate about bringing a new golden era and kind of looking to the old school Corrie days for inspiration, which is what people seem to love – and what Kate is brilliant at, alongside our writing team. The route she envisioned Corrie going in is everything that I’m about, as soon as we spoke I was inspired and motivated.

“They really know how to do that, and that’s how she worded things to me. I want to bring Corrie into this brilliant new era. It’s a very exciting time, and I felt excited by everything that she was saying to me and how passionate the character and really exploring strong women.”

The show has faced criticism, with Charlie Lawson, who played Jim McDonald for decades, hitting out over ‘woke’ plots before claiming viewers are switching off. It was revealed that Corrie didn’t make it into the ten most-watched TV shows on Christmas Day last year but Catherine says things are looking up.

“They’re putting everything into it,” she said. “I think, if there has been criticism over the show, everything is peaks and troughs in life, you can’t be perfection day in, day out. It is important for shows like this to experiment with things and look at relevant topics that are things that are happening around us, and sometimes the audience like that, sometimes they maybe don’t.

“The only way you can learn is if you take risks, mixing things up and different producers have different ideas. It just so happened for me that I felt very, very aligned with Kate, and everything that she was saying, and her new vision for the show in terms of finding that old school era.”

But while her return has been a pleasure, it’s also been painful. The star added: “Obviously Eva is older and wiser, I wanted Eva and Ben to be tight, to be loyal, to be this power couple at the forefront at the pub. We were very passionate about the fact we wanted her to retain that childlike quality that she has, that really fun side. “I’ve been super happy to have Pauline and Aaron to bounce off. They are such wonderful human beings in real life. So we’re having the best time. The other day, I came up to my dressing room and I remember thinking, gosh, my face is hurting from smiling! Pauline is hysterical. I could just put her in a room and watch her and she just got comedy bones. Yeah, they’re both brilliant.”Mum-of-two Catherine has linked up with O2 to help launch an incredible 5G book that connects families for bedtime, even when they have to be apart. The unique book transforms a traditional children’s story into a shared, interactive experience and she says it’s a must for parents.

“I wanted to get involved in this campaign because, for me, a bedtime story is a ritual – it was always my favourite part and still is. That opportunity to kind of talk about their day with them and then to you, delve into a story is just so special.“O2 told me that through their research, I think it was more than half as parents also agreed with that statement that that was their favourite time of the day. So, for me to have the opportunity to do this connected storybook with Iris, who is three, was just amazing.“Whilst nothing can replicate being snuggled up in bed reading with your little one, seeing technology used in this way to make that special moment of connection still possible is just amazing. The book is beautiful and to see the look on Iris’ face when I popped up in the story was a very special moment. She loved being able to see me and read through the story together even though we were apart.”
