Great British Bake Off fans fuming as they slam ‘disgusting’ hygiene mistake on Channel 4 show – did you spot it?

GREAT British Bake Off fans were left unimpressed by a ‘disgusting’ hygiene mistake – but did you spot it?

Viewers tuned in for episode three of the Channel 4 show’s ongoing series.

Contestants of The Great British Bake Off Series 16, Toby, Nadia, Aaron, Leighton, Jessika, Jasmine, Hassan, Lesley, Tom, Pui Man, Iain, and Nataliia, posing together in the Bake Off tent.

In this instalment, the amateur bakers were tasked with the Monkey Bread challenge.

As Alison Hammond, Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith chatted to the hopefuls, fans highlighted a hygiene mistake.

It involved contestant Nadia Mercuri, 41, who is a hairdresser from Liverpool.

Viewers spotted how Nadia touched her hair followed by the food she was preparing.

One wrote on X: “I really wanna just grab of all Nadia’s hair and tie it up properly!!”

Another added: “Stop touching your hair NADIA and then touching the food – disgusting!”

While a third said: “It really bugs me that these women are just letting their hair freely go over the food like that.”

Nadia ultimately advanced to the next episode – with bridal designer Carol “Pui Man” Li being eliminated.

It was recently revealed Bake Off was rejected for five years before arriving on our screens.

Back in 2010, the now-adored programme made its debut on BBC Two.

Bake Off star Andy Ryan reveals he’s still a mechanic despite TV success as he sets his sights on All Stars return

Co-creator Richard McKerrow recalled himself and Anna Beattie fighting for bosses to put their faith into the format.

Speaking at Edinburgh TV Festival, he shared: “We pitched Bake Off for four or five years.

“We were told it would be like watching paint dry, no one was interested.”

The Great British Bake Off made the move from the BBC to Channel 4 in 2017.

This decision saw judge Paul Hollywood being the only star to remain on board.

Fellow original judge Mary Berry as well as hosts Mel & Sue all opted to bow out.

Paul was joined by Prue Leith and new host Noel Fielding, with various co-hosts over the years.

Brentford vs Chelsea live stream and TV channel: How to watch Saturday night’s Premier League London derby

CHELSEA travel up the road where they will face rivals Brentford in what is already their fourth London derby of the season – and SunSport can point fans in the right direction of where to tune in.

Joao Pedro’s header and Enzo Fernandez’s penalty helped the Blues overcome a furious Fulham side before the international break.

But it was a victory that was surrounded by controversy as the PGMOL were forced to apologise for incorrectly ruling out Fulham forward, Josh King’s goal.

And Pedro’s opening strike was a major talking point with it coming in the NINTH minute of stoppage time despite only eight minutes being added.

Elsewhere, Brentford had drama of their own as they most recently lost to newly-promoted Sunderland courtesy of a 90+6 stoppage time Wilson Isidor penalty after leading the game up until the 77th minute.

So they’ll be itching to get back on track with a win and hand one of the only remaining undefeated sides a loss at the Gtech.

How can I watch Brentford vs Chelsea?

  • Brentford vs Chelsea will be broadcast LIVE on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League.
  • Fans can also stream the entire action via a compatible tablet or mobile device on NOW TV.
  • Alternatively, SunSport will have minute-by-minute action through our live blog.
  • This London derby takes place on Saturday, September 13 and kicks off at 8pm BST.
  • The Gtech Community Stadium is the chosen venue for this thrilling clash and it can host approximately 17,250 supporters.
  • There was nothing to separate the sides when they last met in April with the score ending 0-0.

What is the latest injury news?

Chelsea have been dealt an injury blow with Liam Delap‘s injury worse than first feared.

Delap, 22, hobbled off early on in the controversial win over Fulham on August 30.

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca initially thought his £30million transfer from Ipswich would miss six to eight weeks.

But it is now clear he will miss significantly more than that.

The Athletic report Delap will not return to training until November.

Dario Essugo, Romeo Lavia and Benoit Badiashile are all set to the miss the London derby.

As for Blues talisman Cole Palmer, it is still unclear whether he’ll return after missing both the clash against West Ham and Fulham as well as pulling out of the England side.

Gogglebox shake-up as five new families join Channel 4 show and one couple departs

When the Channel 4 show returns tomorrow night for series 26 there will be a lot of fresh faces lighting up the screen – but what does it mean for the regulars?

Andrew and Alfie
Andrew and Alfie, a married couple with a 30-year age gap, are joining Gogglebox

Gogglebox is to be given a major overhaul with five new families joining the regulars for the new series from their sofas – after just one pair were axed.

Earlier this summer, it emerged that Scottish couple Roisin Kelly and Joe Kyle were leaving the show after producers decided not to invite them back for the 26th run, which starts on Channel 4 tomorrow.

Now two new Scottish duos are among the incoming groups of telly watchers – pals Jake, 27, and Calum, 31, from Glasgow plus sisters Rosie, 68, and Susie, 70, from Edinburgh.

The Gordon family
Among the newcomers are the Gordon family, from Surrey

The show is also to get its oldest contributor in the form of 87-year-old Sara from Yorkshire, who will watch the box alongside her daughter-in-law Lara, 58.

The other two families are the Gordons from Surrey, comprising parents Andre, 49, and Sarah, 47, alongside their daughter Chee, 25 plus married couple Andrew, 62, and Alfie, 32, from the Cotswolds.

One insider said the changes were to “inject a bit of freshness” into the long-running show, which remains one of Channel 4’s best-loved titles after 13 years on air.

But the injection of new faces could cause stress for some of the Gogglebox regulars, who may feel they are now in danger of being pushed out in the coming months if the new arrivals prove popular.

Jake and Calum
Glasgow-based Jake and Calum are one of the two new Scottish duos brought in to replace outgoing pair Joe and Roisin

The series will showcase the new groupings on screen from tonight at 9pm. Mike Cotton, creative director for production company Studio Lambert, said it was “a delight” to welcome the fresh households into the Gogglebox family, adding: “Along with our much-loved returning cast, we can’t wait to join them in their living rooms and hear their candid thoughts on this weeks most talked about TV.”

They will join regular Goggleboxers pals Jenny and Lee, the Siddiqui family, the Malone family, married couple Giles and Mary, sisters Ellie and Izzi, Welsh married couple David and Shirley, the Plummer brothers, sisters Amira and Amani, the Worthington family, siblings Pete and Sophie, friends Abbie and Georgia, married couple Sue and Steve, siblings Simon and Jane, married couple Ronnie and Annie, pals Danielle and Daniella, married couple Teresa and Anita and parents Michael & Sally, who appear with their teen twins Jake and Harry.

Joe and Roisin took to social media in July to tell fans that they were not returning for the show’s next series. They wrote: “After three and a half years of sitting on the sofa Channel 4 have decided it’s time for Joe and I to stretch our legs and have not asked us back for season 26. Therefore, we are leaving the Gogglebox family.”

Thanking the producers, they added: “The experience has actually been so mad and we will miss watching TV with you all on Friday nights! It’s been an honour to represent Scotland as some of the first Scottish people on the show and prove we don’t actually need subtitles.”

A spokesperson for Channel 4 said they wished the pair all the best for the future, adding: “We thank Joe and Roisin for their contributions to Gogglebox over the years.”

C-SPAN will stream on YouTube TV and Hulu + Live TV

Two major digital platforms — YouTube and Hulu + Live TV — have agreed to carry C-SPAN two months after the nonprofit organization made a public plea for wider distribution.

Changing industry economics have taken a toll on C-SPAN, prompting the U.S. Senate to urge streaming companies to begin offering customers the privately funded television service, which has provided nonpartisan gavel-to-gavel television coverage of congressional hearings and roll call votes for decades.

“All television providers, including streaming services, should make delivery of C-SPAN a priority so Americans can watch Congress in action, in real time,” senators said in their June resolution.

On Wednesday, C-SPAN announced separate distribution agreements with YouTube and Hulu + Live TV.

The agreements expand “access to C-SPAN’s unfiltered coverage of U.S. government for millions of subscribers nationwide, further strengthening the network’s role as an indispensable source of public affairs programming,” C-SPAN said in a statement.

C-SPAN stands for Cable-Satellite Public Affairs Network. It relies heavily on revenue generated from license fees paid by cable, satellite and other multi-TV channel operators. But as the number of traditional pay-TV homes continues to shrink, C-SPAN found itself running a troubling financial deficit.

Last year, C-SPAN collected $46.3 million in revenue, a 37% decline from $73 million in 2015. That’s largely because C-SPAN and other basic cable channels were available in more than 100 million homes 10 years ago.

Since then, the number of homes has been cut nearly in half.

The three C-SPAN channels — C-SPAN, C-SPAN2 and C-SPAN3 — will be added to YouTube TV’s base package of channels this fall, the companies said. The channels will also run on the main YouTube video platform.

In addition, Google-owned YouTube will sponsor the network’s coverage of “America 250” — the celebrations to mark the nation’s founding two and a half centuries ago.

“For nearly half a century, C-SPAN has partnered with cable and satellite providers who recognize the value of our important public service,” C-SPAN Chief Executive Sam Feist said in a statement. “We now look forward to working closely with YouTube to bring C-SPAN’s unfiltered coverage of the democratic process to millions more Americans.”

C-SPAN uses its own cameras in the Capitol, enabling the service to catch the action when government-operated audio and visual equipment is cut off.

Earlier this summer, Feist told The Times that C-SPAN should be able to close its budget gap if YouTube TV and Walt Disney Co.’s Hulu + Live TV would carry its feeds.

Around 20 million households subscribe to such online subscription platforms, known as virtual multichannel video program distributors, which stream broadcast and cable channels.

Times staff writer Stephen Battaglio contributed to this report.

The Jury: Murder Trial has returned for a second series and Channel 4 viewers have taken to social media after recognising one of the actors from BBC One soap EastEnders

The Jury
Channel 4 viewers all said the same thing minutes into the first episode of The Jury: Murder Trial series two

Channel 4 viewers all said the same thing as they watched the first episode of The Jury: Murder Trial series two.

This BAFTA-winning show returned on Tuesday (August 26) night with the real-life trial of a young mother called Sophie who stabbed her boyfriend Ryan in the chest with a kitchen knife. She says it was self-defence but is she telling the truth?

The trial has been restaged using original court transcript with actors, but will the jury made up of 12 members of the public agree with the verdict of the original trial?

Watching the trial in Liverpool Crown Court are ordinary people from the local area.

As the prosecution laid out their case, the jurors immediately started to draw different conclusions from the evidence.

Some suspected the defendant was a victim of domestic abuse but others weren’t so sure.

In the first series, the juries were confronted with a case involving a husband who had killed his wife but denied it was murder and fans have shared their disappointment

After listening to the defence and prosecution’s cross-examination, they retreated to the deliberation room to hammer out a verdict – but did it align with the other jury’s decision?

The second series followed a similar patter but this time there’s just one jury instead of two.

Towards the end of the first episode, actress Karen Henthorn appeared in the dock as Sophie’s grandmother Mary and fans quickly recognised her and shared their observation on social media.

Fox News, Fox Sports may be dropped from YouTube TV in fee dispute

About 10 million YouTube TV subscribers could lose access to Fox News and Fox Corp. channels that broadcast sports in a fee dispute that comes just days before the start of college football.

The Google-owned television service notified customers that Fox-owned channels, including Fox Business and local stations such as KTTV Channel 11 in Los Angeles, may be dropped from their program line-ups as soon as Wednesday afternoon if the two sides fail to reach a new distribution pact.

YouTube TV viewers would be without “The Five” and other Fox News programs. Sports fans could miss out on Friday night’s Auburn-Baylor football game and Saturday’s high-profile contest between Texas and Ohio State, along with three regional Major League Baseball games.

A prolonged blackout could interrupt the start of Fox’s NFL season that begins on Sept. 7.

“Fox is asking for payments that are far higher than what partners with comparable content offerings receive,” YouTube said late Monday in a blog post. “Our priority is to reach a deal that reflects the value of their content and is fair for both sides without passing on additional costs to our subscribers.”

The dust-up comes as YouTube TV has become one of the most formidable television providers.

Earlier this year, Nielsen ranked YouTube, including its video service, as the largest television distributor in the U.S. by share of viewership. YouTube’s popular bundle — it also offers the NFL Sunday Ticket package of out-of-market games — has dramatically cut into the business of legacy pay-TV providers, including Charter Spectrum, DirecTV and Dish Networks.

“While Fox remains committed to reaching a fair agreement with Google’s YouTube TV, we are disappointed that Google continually exploits its outsized influence by proposing terms that are out of step with the marketplace,” Fox said in a statement, adding the dispute could force its channels to go dark “unless Google engages in a meaningful way soon.”

Last year, YouTube generated $54.2 billion in revenue, second only to the Walt Disney Co., according to the MoffettNathanson research firm. The analysts estimated that fast-growing YouTube TV would reach 10 million subscribers this year. That slightly trails Charter, which operates the Spectrum service, and Comcast. YouTube TV has eclipsed the once powerhouse satellite TV service providers.

Disputes between programmers and pay-TV providers have become increasingly common in recent years amid a weakening of television economics. The high cost of sports rights has become a major rub for pay-TV distributors who have been asked to pay higher fees to mitigate the loss of subscribers.

Last year, DirecTV customers lost access to Walt Disney Co. channels, including ESPN, for nearly two weeks.

The battle was costly. DirecTV acknowledged that thousands of subscribers fled — many to YouTube TV — during the blackout. Viewers who wanted to watch the U.S. Open tennis tournament, college football, “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune” were upset by the outage.

In 2023, a separate dispute led to Disney channels going dark on Spectrum.

YouTube said Monday that it was “working diligently with the team at Fox to reach an agreement.”

Should the channels go dark, the company will provide customers with a $10 credit. YouTube said customers could also sign up for Rupert Murdoch’s television company’s new streaming service, Fox One, which costs $20 a month.

Channel 4 axes controversial TV show after just one series

CHANNEL 4 has opted to axe a controversial reality show following backlash from its launch.

Around The World in 80 Weighs, which aired in 2024, followed six medically obese participants as they travelled around on a fact-finding mission to learn different cultures’ secrets to weight loss.

The series was hit with criticism, particularly around the show’s ads, which often featured confectionery.

Now, according to Daily Mail, Channel 4 has opted not to bring the show back for a second season.

“Around The World in 80 Weighs caused a stir with critics and its audience, but while Channel 4 had originally commissioned it for one series, there was scope for it to be brought back with a new batch of participants after they established the show’s format,” they said.

“The series being parked is reflective of changing audience habits where programmes remotely reminiscent of noughties hits that created a shame culture on other people’s lives and their struggles for entertainment purposes is widely shunned.”

Across the five episode series, the participants travelled across Japan, Texas, Tonga and India to try weight loss treatments.

This also included discovering diet secrets, and experiencing the different cultural relationships to food in both positive and negative ways.

In one uncomfortable scene, the group are seen being laughed at on the streets of Tokyo by onlookers.

The group visit the Japanese city after it’s revealed the country only has a 4% obesity rate, compared to the UK’s 25%.

Participant Marisa is seen telling cameras: “It just blows my mind that you’re not allowed to be who you are and you just have to fit it.

“I don’t feel like I should be here. In this country I don’t feel comfortable, and for me personally, it isn’t somewhere I would come back.”

‘I don’t want to die young!’ sobs Around The World In 80 Weighs star as she breaks down after heart-wrenching warning

After that, the group moved on to Tonga, which has one of the highest obesity rates in the world.

After meeting a woman who at 28 weighs 47 stone, and another who had lost both her legs, members of the group were reduced to tears as they feared they would die.

MSNBC will change its name after Comcast split

MSNBC is being renamed after parent company Comcast spins the cable news channel off into a separate corporate entity later this year.

MSNBC will be known as MS NOW once it becomes part of Versant, a new company, and is no longer associated with NBC News, staffers were told Monday.

“Morning Joe” co-host Joe Scarborough informed viewers of the pending change on his program.

In a memo obtained by the Times, Versant Chief Executive Mark Lazarus indicated it was Comcast’s decision to remove NBC and its famous peacock logo from the MSNBC name.

“The peacock is synonymous with NBCUniversal, and it is a symbol they have decided to keep within the NBCU family,” Lazarus wrote. “This gives us the opportunity to chart our own path forward, create distinct brand identities, and establish an independent news organization following the spin.”

One person familiar with the name change discussions said the re-branding will be backed by a significant marketing campaign.

The MS NOW acronym will convey that the channel has a point of view, as the acronym stands for “my source,” news, opinion and world.

MSNBC will no longer share the resources of NBC News. The network is building its own news organization from scratch, with some NBC News journalists such as Jacob Soboroff choosing to join the cable operation.

MSNBC will also be leaving NBC’s Rockefeller Plaza headquarters for another Manhattan location.

Key MSNBC personalities such as Scarborough, Rachel Maddow, Ari Melber and Lawrence O’Donnell will remain a part of the channel after the spinoff.

Versant is the new stand-alone home for nearly all of the current parent company Comcast’s cable networks, which includes USA Network, the Golf Channel, CNBC and MSNBC. Comcast is spinning off the cable networks because it believes the mature outlets face a bleak future due to pay TV cord-cutting and are an albatross weighing down its stock price.

MSNBC, the second most watched cable news channel behind leader Fox News, has seen its reach into pay TV homes decline by 33% over the last 10 years.

MSNBC was founded in 1996 as a joint venture between NBC News and Microsoft. A name change was considered when Microsoft divested its stake in 2005, but NBC stuck with the moniker that had become entrenched in the media culture.

Fox’s $20-a-month news and sports streamer launches next week. Here’s what’s on it

Rupert Murdoch’s Fox Corp. has largely stayed on the sidelines of the streaming wars.

That ends next week.

Fox, which owns the most-watched cable news channel Fox News and has TV rights to major sporting events such as the NFL and MLB post-season baseball, has remained committed to the declining pay TV business.

But with 65 million households no longer hooked up to cable or satellite services, the company making its channels available to non-pay TV customers for the first time with Fox One, a new streaming platform that will launch Aug. 21.

“There is a growing audience outside of cable,” said Pete Distad, chief executive of direct-to-consumer for Fox Corp., who previewed the service Thursday at a press briefing at the company’s New York headquarters. “We need to give to give those cord-cutters and cord-nevers access to our content.”

For $19.99 a month, Fox One will provide subscribers with their local Fox TV affiliate that carries a package of NFL games, plus two Fox Sports cable channels. A full year subscription will cost $199.

Fox One will also carry Fox News Media’s channels, which include Fox News, Fox Weather and Fox Business. It will provide replays of Fox programming on demand, with access to current seasons of entertainment programs and DVR capabilities with unlimited storage.

But the main selling point of Fox One will be the company’s array of live events, which include next year’s FIFA World Cup. The service will be promoted with the marketing tag line, “We Live For Live.”

Sports is the driver for the service. Fox Corp. and Walt Disney Co. have already agreed to offer a package deal for Fox One and the upcoming ESPN direct-to-consumer service also launching next week, for $39.99 a month, a savings of $10. ESPN will charge subscribers $29.99 on its own.

Distad said his company will look at more opportunities to bundle Fox One with other streaming services.

Until now, Fox’s biggest investment in streaming was the acquisition of Tubi, an ad-supported free streaming service that has grown to capture 1% of all U.S. TV viewing according to Nielsen.

Fox Corp. sold its TV and movie studio assets to Disney in 2019, partly because the company did not believe it could compete with deep-pocketed tech firms such as Amazon and Apple, which have spent freely on producing content for their streaming platforms.

But Amazon and Netflix — which acquired NFL rights in recent years — have shown that they can draw large audiences for live sports events, an area where Fox Corp. is already deeply entrenched.

The real test for the new streaming product will be the appetite for Fox News. The conservative-leaning news channel dominates its competitors in the TV ratings. Whether consumers who have cut the cable cord will be willing to pay to stream the channel’s live feed is an open question.

“Nobody knows how many news fans are outside of the pay TV universe,” Distad said.

Distad is encouraged by the reach of Fox News content online after it airs live on the TV network. Fox News scored 1.5 billion views on YouTube and 3.7 billion views on social media platforms in the last quarter.

Fox News Media’s existing streaming channel, Fox Nation, will be offered as a $5 add-on for Fox One for a total of $24.99 a month. The service has documentaries, true crime shows and movies that appeal to the Fox News audience.

Fox Corp. executives are keeping their expectations low. It’s priced high enough so that the consumer who is currently happy with their current cable TV subscription is not likely to cancel.

But Distad said profit projections are “aggressive” as the platform will not spend money to create original programming. All of the content is being provided from its existing networks.

Investment in original programming has been the main obstacle to profitability for the streaming services that have proliferated in recent years.

Distad said the company is considering putting podcasts on the Fox One platform. Fox Corp. company recently acquired Red Seat Ventures, a media company that specializes in providing business support and technical services for right-leaning podcasts.

Tonight, Channel 4 aired the first episode of highly anticipated thriller, In Flight. The six-part series follows the story of single mum and flight attendant Jo Conran whose life is turned upside down when her son is imprisoned for a murder in Bulgaria. However, he swears he didn’t commit it.

In a desperate attempt, to save her son, Jo takes a huge risk and begins to smuggle drugs over the boarder through her job – but how will things pan out?

Fans sat down at 9pm to watch the first instalment on Channel 4, starring Katherine Kelly, but it seemed like a number of fans had the same comment, as they took to X, formerly known as Twitter to complain. It comes after BBC Death in Paradise’s Kris Marshall shares heartbreak over being sacked and losing job.

Fans had no complaints about the series, just the lack of it. “Too many bloody ads,” said one disappointed viewer, while another penned: “More adverts than programme!”

Aside from the adverts, the series had good reviews, with excited fans ready to watch the new series. One penned: “I Can’t wait! I’m going to have to watch the rest of the series on 4 now!”

Those who can’t wait for the next episode next week can catch all episodes on the streamer now. Fans were left on a cliffhanger with Jo telling a concerned Dominic that she needed her help – and some can’t wait until next week to find out what happens next.

“She turns to her ex, Dom, for help. However, no matter how far Jo finds herself from her old life, her mission remains the same: to keep her son alive.

“Set against the fast-paced, high-pressure backdrop of international air travel, In Flight follows Jo’s relentless quest to protect her family while entangled in a dangerous criminal syndicate.”

The fictional crime drama, which stars Coronation Street‘s Katherine Kelly in the lead role, is set to air weekly, with fans not wanting to binge online having to wait until Tuesday for the next part of the series.

Joining Katherine Kelly in the series is Babylon’s Stuart Martin who plays the role of lead criminal gang member Cormac.

Jo’s ex, Dom Delaney also plays a key part in the role and is played by actor Ashley Thomas, who also goes by stage name Bashy. Fans may recognise the star for his role as Jermaine Newton in TopBoy.

Channel crossings to hit 50,000 since Labour came to power

The number of migrants to cross the English Channel in small boats since Labour came to power last summer is expected to have reached 50,000.

Home Office data shows 49,797 people had made the journey as of Sunday, with Monday’s total due to be released later.

Government minister Baroness Smith told the BBC this was an “unacceptable number of people” but pointed to the “one in, one out” returns deal with France as a deterrent.

But the Conservative Party said the migrant crossing totals showed Labour had “surrendered our borders”.

The latest figures come as ministers continue to grapple with how to crack down on people-smuggling gangs – a key pledge of Sir Keir Starmer’s when he became prime minister.

Baroness Smith said: “We understand how concerning this is to people.”

She added that the migrant crossing figures showed people-smuggling gangs had taken an “absolute foothold in the tragic trafficking of people” in recent years but the government was now “making progress” on tackling this.

The “one in, one out” pilot will see the UK return some migrants to France in exchange for receiving the same number of asylum seekers who are believed to have legitimate claims.

Last week, a government source told the BBC several dozen migrants had been detained under the UK’s new agreement with France so far, but did not provide a specific number.

The first returns are due to happen within weeks – but the initial numbers are expected to be small.

Figures released on Tuesday are expected to confirm that the number of small boat crossings from the date that Labour came to power on 5 July last year had reached 50,000 by Monday, 11 August.

This is more than 13,000 higher than for the same period a year earlier – as between 5 July 2023 and 11 August 2024 there were 36,346 migrant crossings in small boats.

Government sources highlighted that this is not the first time 50,000 people have crossed the Channel during a 403-day period.

Between 8 October 2021 and 14 November 2022, under the previous Conservative government, there were 53,587 arrivals by small boat.

Government sources say there were an unusually high number of days with calm and warm weather at the start of this year, which partially contributed to the high number of crossings.

But the Tories accused Labour of overseeing the “worst illegal immigration crisis in our history”.

“This is a taxpayer-funded ferry service for the people-smuggling trade. Every illegal immigrant should be removed immediately upon arrival,” said shadow home secretary Chris Philp.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said: “As I predicted five years ago, unless we deport illegal migrants the invasion will be huge. 50,000 since this weak prime minister took office and there is no sign of it stopping.”

The Home Office said it wants to end dangerous small boat crossings and had put together a “serious plan” to take down networks.

But politically the 50,000 milestone is deeply uncomfortable for the government, given its promise to smash the gangs that drive the small boat crossings.

More migrants crossed the Channel between January and August 2025 than in the same period last year.

A line chart showing the cumulative number of people who crossed the English Channel in small boats each year for 2021 to 2025 so far. Each year is represented by a line which tracks the numbers from January to December. 2021 saw the lowest of the five years, at 28,526 and 2022 saw the highest with 45,774. So far this year to 10 August the total is 26,555, which is the the highest for that point in the year of any of the others.

Government sources argue there is no silver bullet to bring the numbers down but insist a series of practical changes, such as measures to tackle illegal working and deport foreign criminals more quickly, are planks in a wider plan to address the problem.

Baroness Smith said the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill, which is going through Parliament, would give ministers greater powers to “challenge the gangs”.

Other measures announced include prison sentences of up to five years for criminals advertising illegal Channel crossings online, and increased funding for more National Crime Agency officers.

Asked about the Tories’ suggestion that only a very small number of people will be deported under the “one in, one out” pilot scheme, Baroness Smith said the previous Conservative government’s Rwanda deportation scheme “cost £700m and was never designed for more than six people a week”.

The latest moves also come in the wake of a series of protests and counter demonstrations outside UK hotels which are used to house asylum seekers.

“People do not cross the Channel unless what lies behind them is more terrifying than what lies ahead,” said Enver Solomon, chief executive of the Refugee Council charity.

The charity’s frontline workers say the men, women and children travelling in small boats are “often fleeing places like Sudan, where war has left them with nowhere else to turn”, he added.

“To stop smugglers for good, the government must expand safe and legal routes, such as allowing family members to travel to be with their loved ones who are already settled in the UK,” he said.

“Without these measures, desperate people will continue to take dangerous journeys, and the criminal gangs are likely to simply adapt their approaches.”

Jacob Soboroff will join MSNBC after network splits from NBC News

NBC News correspondent Jacob Soboroff will join MSNBC full time once the progressive cable channel is spun off into a new company, which will be called Versant.

Later this year, MSNBC is heading to Versant, which will be the new stand-alone home for current parent company Comcast’s cable networks.

As a result, MSNBC will no longer have the resources of NBC News and is putting together its own editorial operation. The stylized NBC peacock will also disappear from the MSNBC logo.

NBC News correspondents who moved seamlessly between NBC’s broadcast programs and MSNBC will no longer appear on both platforms once the spin-off is complete. (The one exception is expected to be Willie Geist, who has anchor roles on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” and NBC’s “Sunday Today.”)

Soboroff, a Los Angeles native who earlier this year reported on how his childhood home was lost in the Palisades fire, is the highest profile talent so far to leave NBC News in the split. He will remain based on the West Coast.

Jacob Soboroff is joining MSNBC after the network spun off from Comcast.

Jacob Soboroff is joining MSNBC after the network spun off from Comcast.

(Patrick Randak)

Soboroff, 42, was hired as an MSNBC correspondent in 2015. He was later named an NBC News correspondent and in recent years has frequently appeared as a fill-in co-host on the network’s morning franchise “Today.”

NBC News employees who worked both on the broadcast and cable sides have been asked to choose which entity they will join. Most NBC News staffers are choosing to stick with the network. Steve Kornacki, the number-crunching star of MSNBC’s election nights, chose the broadcast network over cable as he also works for NBC Sports.

But a number of NBC News correspondents, producers and executives are choosing to go to the cable side. The migration to MSNBC is surprising, considering the business environment.

Comcast is spinning off the cable networks because it believes the mature outlets face a bleak future due to pay TV cord-cutting and are an albatross weighing down its stock price. MSNBC, the second most watched cable news channel behind leader Fox News, is seen its reach into pay TV homes decline by 33% over the last 10 years.

That has not kept some significant names from giving the start-up a shot. Earlier this week, Versant announced that “NBC Nightly News” executive producer Meghan Rafferty is joining the company as vice president of news standards.

NBC News correspondents moving to the cable side include Ken Dilanian, who covers the Justice Department. Vaughn Hillyard is moving over to become senior White House correspondent, and David Noriega will be a national correspondent based in Los Angeles.

The new company has also attracted talent and executives from CNN, Politico and the New York Times.

TV news agents say privately that many NBC News staffers are expecting layoffs in the division over the next year as ratings and advertising revenue for broadcast TV decline. (The division has not announced any such plans).

While the channels going to Versant, which include CNBC, Golf Channel and USA Network, face similar challenges, the spinoff group is aggressively hiring and promises substantial investment in the channels that still turn a profit.

Correspondents are also attracted to the platform that a 24-hour cable network provides.

Soboroff, the son of Los Angeles civic leader Steve Soboroff, has focused on issues that appeal to the MSNBC audience.

He aggressively covered the family separation crisis at the southern border in 2018, which earned a Cronkite Award. He wrote a book on the topic and executive produced an Emmy-nominated documentary in 2024.

Most recently in June 2025, Soboroff led MSNBC’s coverage of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids in Los Angeles and the resulting protests. His upcoming book, “Firestorm: The Great Los Angeles Fires and America’s New Age of Disaster,” will be released in January.

People smugglers who advertise Channel crossings or fake passports online face five years in prison under crackdown

PEOPLE smugglers who advertise Channel Crossings or try to flog fake passports online face up to five years in prison, under a new crackdown.

The Home Office is scrambling to beef up their laws after a record 25,000 illegal migrants landed on Britain’s beaches so far this year.

The grim milestone piles massive pressure on Home Secretary Yvette Cooper – who has vowed to “smash the gangs” and stop the boats.

But the Government has been accused of woefully failing to restore control to UK borders.

Ministers will introduce a new criminal offence under the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill already going through Parliament.

This will make it a crime to publish material which promotes breaking immigration laws – like flogging small boat crossings, dodgy passports and visas or promising black market work.

These things are already illegal, but ministers say the new law will help beef up the power of the cops and prosecutors.

Anyone caught flouting the law faces five years behind bars or a massive fine.

Ms Cooper said: “Selling the false promise of a safe journey to the UK and a life in this country – whether on or offline – simply to make money, is nothing short of immoral.

“These criminals have no issue with leading migrants to life-threatening situations using brazen tactics on social media. We are determined to do everything we can to stop them – wherever they operate.

“We have to stay one step ahead of the ever-evolving tactics of people-smuggling gangs.”

A staggering 80 per cent of migrants arriving on small boats used social media sites like TikTok to plan their journey, according to the Home Office.
