Bill to study inequalities in youth sports, attacked by critics as supporting transgender athletes, signed by Newsom

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday signed legislation to study inequalities in youth sports, a move likely to draw ire from Republicans who believe the measure is intended to support transgender athletes.

The legislation, Assembly Bill 749, creates a commission to examine whether a new state board or department is needed to improve access to sports regardless of race, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, income or geographic location.

In an open letter last month to the governor, Senate Minority Leader Brian Jones (R-Santee) zeroed in on the term “gender identity.”

“The author and supporters of [this legislation] know if they were upfront and put forth a straightforward bill allowing biological males to compete against young women and girls, it would be easily defeated,” Jones wrote on Sept. 26. “So instead they are trying to establish a stacked commission to indirectly rig the issue in their favor.”

Jones urged Newsom to veto the bill and referenced the governor’s previous remarks about transgender athletes. During the first episode of his podcast “This Is Gavin Newsom,” the governor — a longtime ally of the LGBTQ+ community — acknowledged the struggle faced by transgender people but called transgender women’s participation in women’s sports “deeply unfair” and warned it was hurting Democrats at the polls.

Assemblymember Tina S. McKinnor, who introduced the bill, said Jones should keep his focus on Washington.

“Senator Brian Jones’ time would be better spent writing to the Republican controlled Congress to end the Trump Shutdown and reopen the federal government, rather than attacking trans students,” McKinnor (D-Hawthorne) wrote in an email to The Times.

Legislation referencing gender identity tends to be a lightning rod for controversy nationwide, with opinion polls suggesting Americans hold complex views on transgender issues.

A survey conducted this year by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center found 66% of U.S. adults favor laws requiring transgender athletes to compete on teams that match their sex assigned at birth. At the same time, 56% of adults supported policies protecting transgender people from discrimination in jobs and public spaces.

During legislative committee hearings on the bill, McKinnor focused on the legislation’s potential racial impact. She said last year’s Play Equity Report found 59% of white youth participated in structured sports programs, compared with 47% of Black youth and 45% of Latino youth.

“Participation in youth sports remains unequal despite the well-documented physical, mental and academic benefits,” McKinnor told the Senate Health Committee in July. “These disparities stem from systemic barriers such as financial limitations, uneven program quality, outdated physical education standards and the lack of a coordinated statewide strategy.”

More than two dozen organizations endorsed the bill, including the Los Angeles Rams, city of San Diego, USC Schwarzenegger Institute, YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles and the Boys and Girls Clubs of West San Gabriel Valley and Eastside.

The legislation directs the state public health officer to convene the commission, which will be composed of 10 members appointed by the governor and three appointed by each the speaker of the Assembly and the Senate Committee on Rules. The health officer will also sit on the panel, or appoint their own designee.

Newsom did not issue a statement when his office announced a slate of bills he signed on Monday.

In March, Newsom infuriated the progressive wing of his party when, while hosting conservatives commentator Charlie Kirk on the governor’s podcast, he broke away from many Democrats on the issue of transgender athletes. Newsom, an outspoken champion of LGBTQ+ rights since he was mayor of San Francisco, publicly criticized the “unfairness” of transgender athletes participating in women’s sports.

‘Knifeman’ arrested after members of the public & cops ‘attacked’ in front of horrified students outside college

A ‘KNIFEMAN’ has been arrested by police following a knife attack as two people have been rushed to hospital.

Cops rushed to the scene after reports a man armed with what appeared to be a knife on Great Horton Road in Bradford.

He was detained by college security staff and arrested by attending West Yorkshire Police officers.

A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting two members of the public and assaulting two emergency workers.

He was also arrested for a racially-aggravated public order offence and causing damage to a police vehicle.

The two injured members of the public have been taken to hospital for treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

A small gardening tool was seized by police at the scene, police say.

Detective Inspector Ailis Coates said: “We know that this incident will understandably cause some concern in the community.

“I would like to reassure people that the suspect was quickly detained by security staff and arrested by the police.

“We understand that this incident has been witnessed by a large number of people and that some people may have filmed bits of it.

“We would ask them to please share this footage with the police as it could greatly assist us in our ongoing investigation.

“We currently have a police scene in place on Great Horton Road and people can expect to see our neighbourhood policing colleagues in the area providing reassurance to college staff and students and the wider community.”

Central African Republic Community Flees to UN Military Base as Border Town is Attacked

The population of Am Dafock, situated on the border between  Sudan and the Central African Republic (CAR), have been forced to abandon their homes and take refuge in the camp of the United Nations Multidimensional Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) following an attack early this morning of Monday, Sept. 22, by unidentified assailants from Sudan.

This attack is suspected to be a reprisal, happening three days after the killing of four Sudanese Arabs by Russian mercenaries on Sept. 16, in Am Dafock, and marks an escalation of violence on the border between Sudan and CAR. The attack happened in a village seven kilometres from Am Dafock on the  CAR side of the border. The Sudanese conflict has been spilling into the country for some time now.

“Today’s attack was concentrated in the Bilibili zone, where clashes took place between youths and yet to be identified assailants. Several victims were recorded, but the casualty figure remains unknown due to the confusion that currently reigns in the area,” an anonymous military source told HumAngle.

Zachir Eric Takiya, former president of the youth prefectural council in Vakaga, has confirmed the ‘attack by Sudanese aggressors’, adding that it resulted in deaths and injuries within the local population, but no exact numbers of casualties were confirmed.

“Faced with this new wave of violence, the population of Am Dafock have massively fled from their homes in search of places of refuge, with most of them going to the MINUSCA base in the town. This collective escape is proof of the terror that has seized the inhabitants who are now convinced that their security can no longer be ensured by their national army,” opined an anonymous civil society activist.

“The behaviour of the national army, popularly known by the acronym FACA, deployed in the zone has been contributing to the confusion, visiting the local population. The behaviour of the FACA forces is proof of the fact that they are incapable of facing the attackers,” the activist added.

Am Dafock is currently in a state of total paralysis. This situation is proof of the collapse of state authority in this strategic border region.

This new escalation in violence confirms the analysis by Zachir Eric Takiya, who had alerted the authorities to the porous situation of the CAR border with Sudan during the national dialogue in 2022. According to him, the border resembles “two passageways which enable Sudanese and Chadians to enter and go as they like in the Central African Republic territory. These foreign populations, most times, know the terrain more than the Central African Republic natives themselves.”

“The contrast between the reality lived by the populations and the official version of events is becoming more and more difficult to decipher,” declared another anonymous civil society activist.

The Am Dafock crisis demonstrates the total failure of the security strategy based on the use of Russian mercenaries. Their initial attack against innocent herders has sparked off a cycle of reprisals which have spiralled out of control.

An attack by unidentified assailants from Sudan forced the population of Am Dafock, on the CAR-Sudan border, to flee to a UN base for safety.

This assault, believed to be retaliation for an earlier conflict involving Russian mercenaries, highlights escalating violence in the region. Reports confirm deaths and injuries, although exact figures are unclear due to ongoing chaos. The local population’s distrust in the national army stems from its inability to provide security.

The situation underscores the collapse of state authority and the porous nature of the CAR-Sudan border, previously warned by Zachir Eric Takiya. The failure of security strategies, such as deploying Russian mercenaries, has resulted in uncontrollable retaliatory violence.

This crisis exemplifies the disparity between the lived experiences on the ground and official accounts, complicating the understanding of events.

Nevada says it was cyber attacked; recovery efforts ongoing

Aug. 27 (UPI) — The State of Nevada was the target of a cyberattack, and recovery efforts are ongoing, according to the office of Gov. Joe Lombardo.

A “network security incident” affecting state systems was identified Sunday, and recovery efforts were initiated, Lombardo’s office said Tuesday in a recorded statement, adding some state websites and phone lines may be slow or offline as a result.

“At this time, there is no evidence that personal information has been compromised,” according to the recorded statement published on X.

“The issue affects only state government systems.”

A statement from the governor’s office further said that the incident is under state and federal investigation and was unable to provide technical details about the intrusion.

“The State is focused on restoring services safely and validating systems before returning them to normal operation,” it said.

The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles is one of several state agencies affected by the statewide network outage.

On X, it said in a statement that all offices are closed until further notice.

“The DMV is currently working to resume normal business operations,” it said.

Nevada State Police said its administrative offices and online services were unavailable Tuesday, though the governor’s office said emergency call-taking and essential services, including 911, remain available statewide.

A 16-year-old girl and two boys aged 14 and 15, have been charged with murder by joint enterprise.

The trio, who legally cannot be named, appeared at Maidstone Crown Court today as their families watched from the public gallery.

The court was told the attack allegedly involved a glass bottle and rocks being thrown.

Alexander’s cause of death is currently inconclusive as he seems to have suffered a “medical episode such as a cardiac arrest”

The prosecutor said this “could have been brought on by being chased and attacked”.

Alexander was discovered with bruising to his “lower ribs and stomach” along with an injury to his head.

Some locals who witnesses the “violent assault” tried to provide CPR, the court was told.

The girl and two boys, who are believed to have been on holiday at the time, spoke only to confirm their names, dates of birth and addresses.

No pleas were entered but a provisional trial date was set for January 13 next year.

The teens were remanded into youth detention accommodation ahead of a hearing on November 6.

A 12-year-old girl, arrested on August 12 in Basildon in connection with the alleged attack, has been bailed.

It comes after court documents revealed Alexander pleaded guilty to stalking involving serious harm or distress on March 17 this year.

He followed a woman home from work and approached her front door in the early hours of the morning.

The stalker returned seven minutes later and posted a letter and chocolate bar through her door.

Alexander was handed a one-month curfew and was fitted with a tag, which was due to remain on until September 16.

He was also hit with a restraining order blocking contact with the victim and was told to stay away from her street and the Hempstead Valley Shopping Centre in Gillingham.

Police were scrambled to the Warden Bay Road area of Leysdown-on-Sea shortly after 7pm on Sunday following reports of an “altercation”.

Witnesses in Leysdown-on-Sea claimed the man was “hit with stones and rocks” before he died.

Anthony West, site manager at Jimmy G’s Amusements, said the teens were then arrested in the arcade near the seafront.

Detectives are continuing to appeal for any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police to come forward.

Anyone with information has been asked to call Kent Police on 01622 690690 quoting 10-1384.

Israel says it has attacked Houthi targets in Yemen’s Hodeidah port | Houthis News

Houthis promise more attacks unless Israel ends its offensive on Gaza and lifts the siege.

Israel’s military has launched new air raids on Yemen’s Hodeidah port, targeting what it described as Houthi-linked sites used to stage drone and missile attacks against Israel and its allies.

Minister of Defence Israel Katz on Monday said the military was “forcefully countering any attempt to restore the terror infrastructure previously attacked”.

The Israeli military claimed that the “port serves as a channel for weapons used by the Houthis to carry out terrorist operations against Israel and its allies”.

The Houthi movement, which controls large parts of northern Yemen, later claimed responsibility for drone and missile attacks on locations in Israel, including Ben Gurion airport, Ashdod and Jaffa.

In a statement, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the strikes were a direct response to the attacks on Hodeidah and Israel’s continued bombardment of Gaza.

“The drone attack successfully achieved its objectives,” he said, adding that operations would continue until Israel ends its offensive on Gaza and lifts the siege.

Since Israel launched its war on Gaza in October 2023, the Houthis have carried out several attacks on shipping lanes in the Red Sea, saying they were acting in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. Israel has responded with repeated strikes on Houthi targets, particularly in Hodeidah, a key entry point for goods and aid into Yemen.

“The Houthis will pay a heavy price for launching missiles toward the State of Israel,” Katz said.

Earlier this month, the Houthis claimed responsibility for an attack on the Greek-owned vessel Eternity C, which maritime officials said had killed four people.

In May, the United States brokered a deal with the Houthis to halt their bombing campaign in exchange for reduced attacks on international shipping. However, the Houthis clarified that the agreement did not extend to operations involving Israel.

Coronation Street ‘reveals’ who attacked Gary – but it’s not Nina or Summer

Coronation Street’s latest episode confirmed Gary Windass was in a coma amid a brutal mystery attack, but amid Nina Lucas fearing she’d done something, is someone else to blame?

Coronation Street may have ruled out Nina and Summer as Gary's attacker
Coronation Street may have ruled out Nina and Summer as Gary’s attacker(Image: ITV)

Gary Windass’ attack on Coronation Street will be hot topic as fans try to figure out what happened to him and who did the crime.

But perhaps two people have been ruled out despite it being heavily hinted they are involved. Gary was revealed to be in a coma in hospital during Friday’s episode of the ITV soap.

Prior to now it was thought he’d been staying with his mother Anna Windass away from Weatherfield, but when he didn’t return home his wife Maria Connor was concerned. Then on Friday Maria got a text message from ‘Gary’ stating he was fine and at a mate’s house, and would be home soon.

Of course new information has come to light though that could well suggest Gary has been in a coma for days, and therefore did not send that message. Well of course he didn’t send the text, as by the end of the episode we saw him in hospital and unconscious.

So whoever attacked Gary must have his phone, and is covering their tracks. New spoilers had teased a cover-up was underway, ahead of Maria reporting Gary as a missing person with the police in upcoming episodes.

Something will make Maria’s blood run cold, sending her to the police station in a bid to find her missing husband. Amid her concern, someone, or more than one person perhaps, knows where he is, and knows what has happened.

READ MORE: Coronation Street Gary Windass faces death as secret attacker covers up grim crime

As well as keeping the truth from Maria and Gary’s loved ones, the mystery attacker, it’s soon revealed, has told the hospital a fake name for Gary while also claiming to be his next of kin. The attacker is clearly trying to stop the truth from coming up, going to desperate lengths to cover their tracks.

These scenes will be delved into in the coming weeks as the plot continues. But Friday’s episode appeared to confirm that it was Gary who Nina Lucas and Summer Spellman had seen the night they were on drugs.

The girls were high on LSD when something sent them racing to the café, screaming and crying. They soon revealed they’d witnessed something bad, torn over whether to tell the police.

During Friday’s episode Nina broke down to her uncle Roy Cropper, and eventually she explained everything to him and detective Kit Green. We learned that what Summer and Nina had seen was a man “lunging” at them, before Nina pushed him and ran in terror.

She claimed that before they fled the man fell and hit his head. She told Roy there was blood and the man was not moving, but fearing for her safety she and Summer ran away and did not say anything.

Friday's episode appeared to confirm that it was Gary who Nina Lucas and Summer Spellman had seen the night they were on drugs

Now Nina is convinced someone is hurt and it’s her fault, asking Kit if a body had been found or if someone was missing. As no one believed the incident happened Nina struggled, sure that something was going on.

She told Roy she’d hurt someone and that she was determined to find out who. In that moment we saw Gary in hospital, with it alluding that Gary was the man Nina and Summer saw, and that perhaps Nina was the one who attacked him.

But a couple of things clearly rule Nina and Summer out. The fact someone has been posing as Gary and messaging Maria, this cannot be Nina as she has no idea who the man is and if it even happened.

She’s also confessed to everything, struggling with that’s happened too, so for her to send messages or cover up the crime doesn’t make any sense, let alone posing as Gary’s next of kin. The same goes for Summer, and neither of them seem to be aware of the link to Gary.

Gary Windass' attack on Coronation Street will be hot topic as Maria Connor decides to report her husband as a missing person

She also doesn’t seem to be aware the man she saw, Gary, is in hospital, yet the person who attacked him does know he’s there and will likely visit him given the spoilers about what the attacker does to cover up their crime. It just wouldn’t make sense for Nina to be desperate to work out who they are and tell the police, and then secretly know the truth – so who did attack Gary?

Whoever it is must have his phone, and must know he was away from Weatherfield amid their cover story. So far fans have wondered if Gary was robbed or attacked on his way home, or if, given it likely happened around Monday’s episode, someone at the party was involved.

A theory suggests teenager Brody might be to blame after he fled the party, after Gary’s run-in with his dad Mick. Viewers suggested Kit may be covering for Brody, as other fans wondered if Lauren Bolton attacked Gary thinking it was Joel Deering. A further theory suggested Debbie Webster may be to blame after her recent arrest.

Mapping Iran’s oil and gas sites and those attacked by Israel | Israel-Iran conflict News

Israel and Iran are engaged in attacks for a fifth straight day, with Israel targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities, military sites, oil and gas facilities, and state TV headquarters.

The escalation has raised fears of a widening conflict and turmoil in global energy markets.

Iran is one of the top global producers of oil and gas and holds the world’s second largest proven natural gas reserves and the thirdlargest crude oil reserves, according to the United States Energy Information Administration.

How big is Iran’s oil industry?

With about 157 billion barrels of proven crude oil, Iran holds about a quarter (24 percent) of the Middle East’s and 12 percent of the world’s proven oil reserves.

Iran is the ninth largest oil producer globally and the fourth largest within OPEC, producing about 3.3 million barrels of crude oil per day. It exports roughly 2 million barrels of crude and refined fuel each day.

INTERACTIVE-The top 10 oil producers- JUNE16-2025 copy 2-1750160548

In 2023, Iran’s net oil export revenues were estimated at $53bn, up sharply from $37bn in 2021. While Iran’s economy is relatively diversified compared with many of its neighbours, oil continues to be a critical source of government income.

However, years of limited foreign investment and international sanctions have kept Iran’s oil production well below its full potential.

After Israel’s attacks on Iran began on Friday, fears of a wider Middle East conflict sent oil prices soaring nearly 7 percent in a single day. Prices have held steady about that level since.

Where are Iran’s oil facilities?

Iran’s oil facilities are spread across several regions, mainly in the south and west of the country. These include onshore oilfields, offshore platforms, refineries, export terminals and pipelines.

Nearly all of Iran’s crude oil flows through Kharg Island, the country’s main export terminal, which handles close to 1.5 million barrels per day.

More than 20 percent of the world’s seaborne oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow maritime chokepoint between Iran and Oman.

INTERACTIVE-IRAN-OIL-MAP-JUNE 17, 2025-1750160323

Major onshore oilfields include:

  • Ahvaz Field – Iran’s largest oilfield and one of the biggest globally
  • Gachsaran Field – second-largest Iranian field, producing light crude
  • Marun Field – another high-output field near Ahvaz
  • Agha Jari, Bibi Hakimeh and Karanj fields – located mostly within Khuzestan province in southwestern Iran, a key oil-producing region

Major offshore fields include:

  • Abuzar, Foroozan, Doroud and Salman fields – located in the Gulf and shared with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates

Its main refineries include:

  • Abadan Refinery – one of the oldest and largest refineries in the Middle East
  • Tehran Refinery – supplies the capital and nearby provinces
  • Isfahan, Bandar Abbas, Arak and Tabriz refineries – process various crude types for domestic use and export

How big is Iran’s gas industry?

Iran has the world’s second largest proven natural gas reserves after Russia. They are estimated at 1,200 trillion cubic feet (34 trillion cubic metres), which accounts for 16 percent of global reserves and 45 percent of OPEC’s total.

Iran is the third highest producer of natural gas behind the US and Russia with production reaching 9,361 billion cubic feet (265 billion cubic metres) in 2023, accounting for at least 6 percent of global production.

Like oil, Iran relies heavily on domestic companies to develop its gasfields due to international sanctions, which have limited foreign investment and technology access.

INTERACTIVE-The top 10 producers of natural gas- JUNE16-2025-1750160699

Where are Iran’s gas facilities?

Iran’s gas facilities are concentrated primarily in the south, especially along the Gulf, with major gasfields and processing plants.

Iran’s largest gasfield, and the largest in the world, is the South Pars field, which it shares with Qatar, where it’s known as the North Field.

Other important gasfields are the North Pars, Golshan, Ferdowsi, Kangan and Nar fields.

Iran’s main gas-processing centre is the South Pars Gas Complex, located in Bushehr province.

Which facilities has Israel attacked?

Israel has struck multiple energy facilities, including the South Pars gasfield, Fajr Jam gas plant, Shahran oil depot, Shahr Rey oil refinery and Tehran fuel depots.

A tourist who decided not to buy a sunbed was beaten up by a resort worker on a popular Turkish beach, it has been reported.

The fight broke out on Damlatas Beach in the Alanya district of Antalya and was watched by crowds of tourists. A sunseeker had been enjoying the rays and asked a resort employee how much sun lounger rentals cost, Milliyet reported.

The tourist decided the price was too high and forgoed the sunbed, opting instead to put his things on the sand. The worker then asked him to remove his belongings and leave the resort. At this point, the fight broke out.

The violence was caught on video. The clip shows several men swarming around a man in swimming trunks who falls to the floor as they beat him. He struggles to get off the sand onto his feet as they continue the pummelling. Several sunworshippers lounging on towels nearby watched on, clearly shocked by the outbreak of violence.

Alanya District Governor Fatih Ürkmezer said that the sunbed business had been closed following the fight.

“Judicial and administrative procedures regarding the attack on a tourist that occurred in a beach business in Alanya in recent days, which does not reflect our city and our understanding of tourism, have been initiated immediately,” he told local media, clearly concerned about the impact the fight and video of it could have on tourism to the area.

“Approaches that are contrary to the understanding of hospitality of both our city and our country will not be tolerated in Alanya, one of the cities where tourism first began in Turkey.”

Business owner Serhan Koçaroğlu sent a written statement to the press following the incident, giving his version of events. He claimed that the incident occurred outside the beach borders of his business and that the beaten man had provoked the attack. Mr Koçaroğlu also said that the tourist was Russian and not British, as some local media outlets have suggested.

“A Russian tourist, under the influence of alcohol, threw a sunbed at our Turkish customer sitting in a lodge on our beach. When I went to intervene, I was physically attacked by the tourist in question,” Mr Koçaroğlu said.

“The scuffle that broke out when some citizens and Turkish customers on the beach reacted after they saw me being beaten was recorded. There is no footage of the beginning of the incident. Also, it is not legally possible to have security cameras on the beach.”

Mr Koçaroğlu said that he decided not to contact police following the incident as he did not want to damage the reputation of Alanya, Milliyet reported.

The sunbed scuffle was the first major lounger-related incident to make news of the summer season. However, there are bound to be plenty more as families head out to swimming pools and beaches across southern Europe for a spot of sunshine.
