Bridgerton star joins cast of BBC drama alongside Poldark and Game of Thrones icons

Upcoming series The Rapture is described as “a high-stakes thriller which crackles with danger”

Bridgerton star India Amarteifio has bagged a role in upcoming BBC drama The Rapture and has said she is looking forward to the “massive challenge”.

The actress, who is best known for playing the starring role in Bridgerton spin-off Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, joins the likes of Doctor Who‘s Ruth Madeley, Gavin and Stacey star Ruth Jones, Game of Thrones‘ Iwan Rheon and Jack Farthing from Poldark in the series.

The five-episode drama is being adapted from Liz Jensen’s best-selling novel and is said to be “a high-stakes thriller which crackles with danger”.

According to the synopsis, the series – which is being produced by Mammoth Screen, part of ITV studios – follows a forensic psychologist named Gabs Fox (Madeley) who meets teen Bethany Krall (India) at a psychiatric hospital.

Bethany, who is the daughter of the leader of a religious movement (played by Sam Hazeldine), was convicted of killing her mum but she insists she didn’t do it.

Adding another twist is the fact that the 17-year-old claims to be able to predict the future. But can she convince Gabs she is telling the truth?

“I’m over the moon to be getting started on this production and cannot wait to bring Bethany onto tellies,” India, 24, said as her casting was announced.

“It will be a massive challenge for me professionally, which I’m very much welcoming and feel incredibly safe to do so in the hands of Mammoth and Ruth!”

Madeley added that it was “a total joy to lead such a powerful and vibrant series”, which she said was “an incredibly special project” to her.

The series, which is shooting in Wales, will also star Stephen Campbell Moore, Lisa Palfrey, Siena Kelly, Naby Dakhli, Richard Elis, Dean Rehman and Robert Rhodes.

Lindsay Salt, director of BBC Drama, added: “This thriller brings Liz Jensen’s compelling novel to life with a truly talented cast led by the brilliant Ruth Madeley and India Amarteifio.

“The Rapture features two complicated and captivating characters, blended with a story of climate change, to create a gripping narrative and I can’t wait for BBC viewers to see it.”

The Rapture is set to air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer

Game of Thrones star withdraws from Strictly Come Dancing

Ian Youngs

Culture reporter

BBC Kristian NairnBBC

Kristian Nairn said he is having treatment and assured fans “I’m OK”

Game of Thrones actor Kristian Nairn has pulled out of this year’s Strictly Come Dancing, just days after the line-up was announced, saying he’s been struggling with “a high level of stress and a little bit of grief”.

Nairn, 49, is best known for playing Hodor – the guileless servant of House Stark – in HBO’s fantasy drama.

He told his Instagram followers that after the line-up announcement last week, his problems had “manifested physically” for the first time and had caused “a spike in my vitals as an area of concern”.

Actor Lewis Cope, best known for playing Nicky Milligan in ITV’s Emmerdale, will replace Nairn on this year’s show.

Ahead of the announcement of Cope as Nairn’s replacement, Nairn wrote: “I’m gutted. I was really looking forward to taking part in this.”

Nairn is also known for playing Wee John Feeney in the US TV period comedy drama Our Flag Means Death, and is a house music DJ.

Last Friday, the 6ft 10in Northern Irishman became the 15th and final contestant to be unveiled for this year’s Strictly.

Medical check

“I’ve been given a wonderful opportunity to be part of the Strictly Come Dancing family, as you may know,” he said in an Instagram video on Thursday.

“Sadly, I’m having to withdraw from this year’s show. There’s been such a response, I definitely want to share why. Like so many people at the minute, I’ve been dealing with a high level of stress and a little bit of grief, if I’m going to be really real.

“I’ve always been my mother’s son and I’ve always powered through things like this in the past. I think I’ve got a pretty healthy attitude towards stuff like this. Well, I thought I did, at least.

“But for the first time it’s manifested physically and has caused a spike in my vitals as sort of an area of concern.

Nairn was revealed as a Strictly contestant on Gary Davies’s BBC Radio 2 show on Friday

“I am a big guy, always have been, ever since I set foot on this Earth, so I take my health very seriously, and I do see my doctor all the time, and I was checked for the show two weeks before [the announcement] and everything was fine, so he was happy for me to take part.

“Please know I’m OK. I’m under treatment already, and my doctor isn’t concerned. After two, maybe three weeks, I’ll be pretty much back to normal, but sadly… it’s not going to be in time for all the training and everything like that.”

‘Taking it easy’

Nairn went on to say he had been “100% supported” by producers and others on the show.

“I’m going to be taking it easy for now, and I’ll be able to return to work very shortly.”

He added: “We live in strange, crazy times at the moment. So without being preachy, please look after yourself. Don’t ignore what’s going on inside your head.

“This is something I haven’t dealt with before, so this has really come as a surprise for me. I always thought I had this.”

He asked people not to worry about him, saying: “I’ve totally got this.”

When his participation was announced last Friday, he said taking part in the dance contest would be “a huge challenge for me physically, but I’m ready to rise to it.”

In a statement from the BBC on Thursday, his withdrawal was put down to “unexpected medical reasons”.

The show’s executive producer Sarah James said: “We’ve absolutely loved getting to know Kristian in this short time, and he has all the makings of a brilliant Strictly Come Dancing contestant.

“We’re incredibly sorry to lose him from this year’s series and we all wish him a speedy recovery.”

Game of Thrones’ Alfie Allen issues statement about ‘power of love’

Alfie Allen stars as a drug trafficker being chased by the CIA in Sky’s new fast-paced thriller series Atomic, and the actor says his character believes in ‘the power of love’

He’s conquered Westeros as Theon Greyjoy in Game of Thrones – now Alfie Allen is embarking on an even more perilous mission.

In Atomic, Sky’s new high-octane thriller, he plays Max, a free-spirited drug trafficker making runs through the Middle East. “He’s a big believer in the power of love and connection between people,” Alfie says.

“But this is interrupted by a crazy stunt that happens in the first 30 seconds of the show.” Thrown into danger from the get-go, Max is ambushed by militants while crossing the Libyan desert – until one spares him.

“The first stunt in the series is a massive car crash, which was actually the first day of shooting for me,” he says. “The car flips over, and that’s where I meet the man I call JJ as he won’t tell me his name.”

JJ, played by Shazad Latif, is a mysterious figure hiding out in the desert with a warlord. “We meet him just as he’s being chased by a guy called Rab,” Shazad says. “He decides to kick it into gear and make a move. That’s where he meets Max, who’s just had a car crash.”

JJ takes Max hostage, sparking a tense, unpredictable road trip across Libya, Algeria and Beirut. Their trail soon reaches deep-cover CIA agent Cassie Elliott, played by The Handmaid’s Tale star Samira Wiley. “She is a Non-Official Cover (NOC) officer with the CIA,” Samira says.

“Her deep cover job is a professor at the American University of Beirut. She’s been there for about four years. When she is pulled back into the game, she is in pursuit of Max and JJ because they happen to be in possession of the HEU, (Highly Enriched Uranium).”

Yet JJ’s motives may not be entirely criminal. “JJ is on a journey to reconcile with his complex past, his relationship with faith and his own fate,” Shazad says. “He thinks Max might be a sign of a way out and a way to find a path to redemption.”

The unlikely pairing fuels the series’ tension. “Max is constantly trying to get answers from JJ about who he is, and where he is in his life,” Alfie says. “With Max, you see what you get – JJ is much more secretive and Max is determined to work him out.”

Off-screen, however, there was no hostility between Alfie and Shazad. In fact, the pair managed to bond during filming of Atomic with Alfie showering his co-star with praises.

“Working with Shazad has been amazing,” Alfie says. “We’ve been very, very fortunate to be able to have a buddy journey project where you get along with your co-star.”

Five part series Atomic begins on Sky Showcase and NOW at 9pm on Thursday 28 August.

Game of Thrones and Handmaid’s Tale stars spotted in ‘explosive’ trailer for new thriller

Stars from two of the biggest shows of the century are going head-to-head in an upcoming thriller on Sky

Sky has just released a brand new trailer for its upcoming thriller series, Atomic, starring some very recognisable names from the world of TV.

The gripping new footage released this Thursday (14th August) promises plenty of action and jaw-dropping twists and turns throughout this high-stakes chase across North Africa and the Middle East.

Game of Thrones icon Alfie Allen leads the series as a drug smuggler who gets mixed up with wanderer JJ, played by Star Trek: Discovery’s Shazad Latif.

When they find themselves inadvertently trafficking some valuable and volatile cargo, their mission catches the attention of worldwide enforcers who will stop at nothing to take them down.

The Handmaid’s Tale star Samira Wiley heads up their opposition as Cassie Elliott, who’s determined to bring them in after falsely connecting them to dangerous elements.

An official synopsis reads: “When the path of free-spirited drug smuggler Max (Allen) collides with JJ (Latif), an enigmatic outsider on the run, an unlikely friendship is formed.

“They’re swept into a chaotic, high-stakes mission they never signed up for— trafficking highly enriched uranium across North Africa and the Middle East, with the CIA, MI6, and a global web of opposing forces closing in fast.

“Leading the charge for the CIA is highly skilled scientist and a Non-Official Cover (NOC) officer Cassie Elliott (Wiley).

“Convinced Max and JJ are in league with violent extremists, her relentless pursuit puts them all on a collision course revealing that nothing is what it seems, and everyone has an ulterior motive.

“The pair find themselves on a wild road trip, confronting covert operatives, an internationally funded cartel, and ultimately their own pasts.

“What starts as a bid for survival slowly becomes something more: a reluctant partnership, a shot at redemption, and one hell of a ride.”

Atomic is shaping up to be one of Sky’s biggest shows of the year and is set to cap off the summer with a bang.
