A charming Peak District village just a stone’s throw from Cheshire has earned recognition as one of Britain’s finest destinations for a mini break. The Times has compiled a list of 25 of the most stunning locations ideal for a quick getaway, featuring everything from quaint hamlets to vibrant boutique shopping streets.

Featured on the list is Ashford-in-the-Water in the Peak District – barely more than thirty minutes from Macclesfield – which sits astride the River Wye, reports Cheshire Live. The Times declares: “For peak village perfection in the Peak District head to Ashford, which lies on the banks of the River Wye.

“Envy-inducing aspects include the medieval Sheepwash bridge, a church that dates from the 12th century and a thriving cricket club that plays on the village green, as well as a collection of very charming limestone cottages with carefully tended gardens.

“Along with the posh restaurant with rooms, Riverside House Hotel, the Ashford Arms recently opened with nine funked-up rooms and cheery food aimed at hikers and other hearty, healthy types.” This news comes after images show the cheapest seaside spot in England is full of abandoned £40k homes ‘nobody wants’.

Derbyshire Live recently highlighted the village’s attractions, saying: “For a small village, Ashford-in-the-Water is surprisingly well-equipped for a delightful day in the countryside, boasting a range of independent businesses. At the heart of the village, Ashford General Store provides a delectable array of Bradwell’s ice cream flavours and an assortment of freshly baked treats like brownies, Bakewell slices, and sausage rolls.

“Those looking to quench their thirst might fancy a crisp pint at the renowned Bull’s Head pub; conversely, if a hot beverage appeals even on a sunny day, the Aisseford Tea Room has earned excellent acclaim from both residents and visitors alike. It added: “Nestled just two miles north-west of Bakewell, Ashford-in-the-Water advises visitors that parking can be rather limited. The local area is peppered with places to take in the area’s natural beauty, including a number of walking trails. While some trails are better for more seasoned hikers, many are perfectly primed for the entire family.

The Ashford-in-the-Water to Monsal Dale Circular Walk crosses through fields, woodlands, and open countryside while the Bakewell and Ashford-in-the-Water Circular offers scenic views of the River Wye, rolling hills, and many of Ashford’s notable historic sites, including the famous Sheepwash Bridge.

With the summer holidays in full swing, many families will be embarking on vacations, whether that’s abroad or as part of a staycation. Some of those seasonal revellers will be lucky enough to be visiting ‘Mickey’s House’, AKA, Walt Disney World Resort, Florida.

It’s estimated that just under 1 million UK visitors travel to Orlando annually, with 80% of those visiting ‘the most magical place of earth’. However, while Disney World and Disney Land are widely loved by children and held with a fierce nostalgia by many parents (and non-parents), the reality can sometimes prove to be less than dreamy.

What’s more, one viral video recently popped the Mickey-ears shaped bubble with one deft swipe. Alex Dodman is a social influencer with roughly 450,000 followers across TikTok and Instagram.

The father-of-three is famous for his ‘real reviews’ of family days out, attractions and holidays, as well as viral trends and cultural events – and now his spotlight is firmly on the Disney resort.

Opening the review with a wry, “It’s almost like we’ve been programmed to think that this is the most magical place on earth”, while filming a motorway gantry leading into the theme park that proclaims the very same, Alex boldly claims that “it’s probably the most overpriced tourist p**stakes in history”.

As many a parent who’s been through the Disney World machine will attest to, the resort is not cheap. A Disney World holiday for a family of four from the UK, including flights, can range from around £6,500 to £15,000 or more, depending on the various packages.

And the repeated financial roundhouse kicks are not entirely conducive to a happy holiday between married people, either, with Alex saying it’s likely they’re going to “pretend they’re having a good time posting about it online, when in reality they’ve probably argued about 1,000 times, been on the brink of divorce, and each child has had an overstimulated meltdown every half an hour”.

According to the influencer: “A ticket to get in here for the day for two adults, two kids and a baby was $709 and because I actually wanted the kids to go on a ride this time, I got some lightning Lane tickets for three rides for an extra $136… How is this even allowed?”

‘Main Street’, the thoroughfare with full view of the Disney Castle, is one to swerve, says Alex.

Not impressed with people that “pretended to cry when they first saw the castle”, he cracked on to the rides – saying that “having some lightning Lane tickets did work well”.

He was less than impressed with the rides themselves, saying the ‘Barnstormer’ “lasted for 25 seconds”, ‘Peter Pan’s Flight’ was “basically pitch black” and ‘It’s a Small World’ was “everyone’s favourite nightmare”.

Conceding that he did understand why “this place is some people’s happy place”, Alex reflected that the ‘trap’ may lie in the fact that Brits have travelled all the way to Orlando.

For that reason, it’s tempting to give in to the cost to embrace a “once in a lifetime” trip. However, he went on to say that: “There’s no way you can enjoy this without having in the back of the mind how utterly screwed you’re being done by Disney”.

Summing up, Alex considered the pay off of such a pricey trip, saying: “Did the kids enjoy it? Yeah. But we also went to Clearwater Beach for the weekend, and they said they had a better time jumping in the sea there, which was free”.

He added: “However you chop it up, it’s way too expensive.”

Comments to the video were mixed, with some wholeheartedly agreeing and others fiercely defending the place that they deeply love.

Many pointed out that Alex’s big mistake was not booking park hopper tickets that make the experience a whole lot more affordable. Doing more research could have helped him to avoid the busiest queues, too.

One follower helpfully supplied: “Yeah, feels like you need so much insider knowledge to not be stung so much with Disney. Park hopper tickets are a better and cheaper option. Staying at Disney property helps for costs with parking for free and dining plans.”

Another person was keen to help too, saying: “Disney World takes a lot of research to do it well and paying for lightning lanes on these type of rides shows you didn’t complete basic training in Disney world trip planning. I think it’s to do with having really little kids too it’s so much fun in the bigger better rides with older kids”.

One poster was relived that they weren’t missing out, saying: “Thank you for blessing us poor who can’t get there that we aren’t depriving our kids and ourselves of the most magical experience on earth”.

And one full-blown fan was clear where her loyalty lay, expressing: “I’m in the Disney cult. Please don’t save me if I blink. They can take my hard earned cash from me so I can walk down that busy street, get tears in my eyes and reminisce of days gone by. “

One popular European city has been named the safest place to visit, according to new research

When it comes to planning a holiday, there’s a lot to consider from the local cuisine and attractions to accommodation. However, one crucial factor is the safety of the destination.

According to an analysis by tour company Riviera Travel, which launched two cruise ships last year, one city has been crowned the safest in Europe.

The study took into account current crime levels and the increase in crime over the past five years – and it comes after a warning to Brit tourists planning all-inclusive holidays to Spain.

An overall safety score was then calculated, revealing how safe each location is, reports the Express.

Topping the list with an overall safety score of 44.14 is the Croatian city of Dubrovnik.

Not only is Dubrovnik a safe place to visit, but it also attracts crowds of tourists with its medieval architecture and status as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Known as the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’, the city boasts a charming Old Town for visitors to explore.

Dubrovnik scored 8.76 from Numbeo for crime level, indicating it’s ‘very low’ and 35.38 for crime increasing over the last five years, also deemed ‘low’.

Coming in second with an overall safety score of 55.81 is Tallinn, the capital of Estonia.

Like Dubrovnik, Tallinn is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a medieval city.

Visitors can safely enjoy a plethora of cafes and restaurants serving local cuisine.

Poland’s capital, Warsaw, ranks third with a safety score of 60.19.

Despite seeing a ‘moderate’ increase in crime over the past five years, the popular destination maintains a ‘very low’ crime level.

Many tourists flock to this city to delve into its rich history and sample the vast array of Polish cuisine on offer.

Prague, the Czech Republic’s capital, came in fourth with a score of 60.88, its ‘moderate’ crime rating over the past five years contributing to an overall ‘very low’ crime score.

As the largest city in the Czech Republic, Prague draws in thousands of tourists annually, who are captivated by its gothic cathedrals and skyline filled with spires.

Kraków took fifth place with a score of 64.31. According to Riviera Travel, it has a ‘low’ crime level of 20.7 and a ‘moderate’ increase in crime over the past five years of 43.61.

Kraków is home to Europe’s largest medieval market square, a renowned Old Town, and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Meanwhile, Amsterdam ranked sixth with a score of 71.09, followed by Munich in Germany with 73.74 and Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland.

Zurich was ninth, with Budapest, the capital of Hungary, rounding out the top ten.

NEW ORLEANS — Hezly Rivera was the fresh face a year ago. The newcomer. The teenager on a team of 20-something Olympic gymnasts, doing her best to absorb what she could from Simone Biles, Sunisa Lee, Jade Carey and Jordan Chiles.

The one thing that stood out, even more than the sometimes otherworldly gymnastics, is the way her fellow gold-medal-winning teammates went about their business.

“They looked so confident,” Rivera said. “They’re like, ‘I’m going to go out and I’m going to hit.’ It gave me that confidence as well.”

Looks like it.

The now 17-year-old who says she’s paying no attention to the idea that she’s the leader of the women’s program in the early stages of the run-up to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics certainly looks the part.

Buoyed by a polished steadiness — and a beam routine that finally looked the way it does back home at her home gym in Texas — Rivera captured her first national title Sunday night at the U.S. Championships. Her two-day total of 112.000 was good enough to fend off a challenge from Leanne Wong and put her in excellent position to lead the four-woman American delegation at the world championships in Jakarta, Indonesia, in October.

Rivera, by far the youngest member of the five-woman team that finished atop the podium in Paris a year ago, bounced back from a shaky performance at the U.S. Classic last month with the kind of measured, refined gymnastics that she attributed to simply “letting go” of whatever pressure she might feel as the lone Olympic gold medalist in a remarkably young field.

“No matter how rough the competition is, I still can get back into the gym and work hard because all those months previously that I’ve been working hard, I know it’s going to show up eventually,” she said. “So it kind of just took a weight off my shoulders.”

Rivera, at the very least, locked up a spot in the world championship selection camp next month. So did Wong, a four-time world championship medalist, budding entrepreneur and pre-med student who shows no signs of slowing down despite years of competing collegiately and at the elite level simultaneously.

Asked how she juggles it all, the 21-year-old who insists she doesn’t keep a planner said she lives by the motto “there’s time for everything.”

Joscelyn Roberson, an Olympic alternate last summer, shook off an ankle injury suffered at the end of her floor routine to finish third as the three most internationally experienced athletes in the field looked ready to lead after spending most of the last Olympic quad learning from Biles and company.

“You go from, ‘Oh you’re so young, you’re so young,’ to, ‘Oh, you are the older kid,’” the 19-year-old Roberson said. “People say, ‘How are you feeling?’ Like, I honestly don’t feel that different.”

Two summers ago, Roberson was Biles’ bouncy sidekick. Now she’s among the leaders of the next wave.

“I felt like more responsible to let the little, smaller, less experienced kids know it’s not the end of the day if you have a bad day or if you had one fall,” Roberson said. “I want to help them grow instead of think ‘I have to be perfect.’”

Roberson then walked the walk. Or maybe limped the limp. She appeared ready to make it a three-woman race for first until she turned an ankle on the final tumbling pass of her floor routine.

The rising sophomore at Arkansas gingerly continued on anyway. She gritted her way through her vault dismount, though the five-tenths (0.5) deduction for using an additional pad for her protection took her out of contention for the all-around.

Still, the victory hardly came easy for Rivera. She was pushed through four rotations by Wong, who started Sunday with a stuck Cheng vault and didn’t relent over the course of two hours.

Rivera responded each time — she posted the top scores on three of the four events — but it wasn’t until she walked off the podium following her floor routine with victory in hand that she could relax.

“Everything fell into place,” Rivera said. “I tried not to get too overwhelmed because nerves obviously can be there, especially when you know you’re in a spot to win a national title, but I just took all pressure off myself.”

Skye Blakely, who was injured at the Olympic Trials in both 2021 and 2024, was sublime on both uneven bars and balance beam to put herself in consideration to make the world team.

Those advertising the family home have been accused of “pulling a fast one” by neighbours since it was listed.

The property in Stockton-on-Tees, Durham, has allegedly been subject of some creative photo editing to boost its appeal.

It’s listed on Rightmove for £350,000, where an initial illustration showed it looking in top notch condition.

The house’s exterior looks neatly done up for the cameras, boasting a tidy front drive and small hedgerow.

But eagle-eyed observers have since suggested that the image – which no longer appears on the Rightmove posting – may be AI enhanced.

The Daily Mail reported from the site of the house to find it looking in vastly different condition.

Gone is the charming shrubbery next to the property, which is instead a fence next to a beauty studio.

The vibe of the photo taken from the scene was rather different to the spruced up image presented in the advert.

After running the original picture through AI checkers, the Daily Mail reported that the image may have been doctored.

One site told them: “We are quite confident that this image, or significant part of it, was created by AI.”

The Rightmove listing also offered a 360 degree view showing the nearby Eaglescliffe railway station.

But the publication also found that the station is under noisy redevelopment at time of writing.

Other images in the listing show spacious looking rooms throughout the house – which all appear in smart condition.

A man who claimed to be the property’s owner pulled up in a Porsche and confronted the Mail reporter while they were at the site.

When they explained their findings, he reportedly told them: “I think you will find a lot of adverts do that now.

“You are not allowed on the property but do what you want to. You don’t need my name.”

One neighbour told the Mail: “They are pulling a fast one. It’s a laugh. The price is shocking.

“It has been empty for a while. I cannot believe it.

“They have faked it all. It is a bit overpriced even though they have done it up.

“An old fellow used to live there but it has been empty since he died and I don’t think the estate agents have had a lot of interest- especially at that price.”

But another told them: “It does not bother me. Who cares?

“If you are going to view it you are going to see what it is like anyway.”

A spokesperson for Roseberry Wood said: “Please be assured there was no intention to deceive in our marketing of the property.

“The listing clearly states that some images have been virtually staged to enhance presentation.”

One village and its neighbouring town were named as the cheapest seaside destination in England by Rightmove, with two-bedroom terraced houses available for as little as £5K

Residents of a seaside village claim their seaside community is suffering as family homes lie empty and dozens more are set to be demolished.

Rightmove named Horden and neighbouring Peterlee the cheapest seaside destinations in England, with two-bedroom terraced houses available for as little as £5K. According to the website, the average asking price in Peterlee and Horden is just over £122K, less than half the average national house price.

Even though demand for seaside properties has increased by eight per cent compared to last year, locals say no one wants to live in the area, which struggles from a lack of investment, drug gangs and anti-social behaviour plaguing the small coastal community. It comes after reports of a small fishing village with some of the UK’s best seafood but hardly any tourists.

“It’s the armpit of England”, one resident said on a local Facebook group post about Horden. Locals previously raised concerns over criminals who have been using the houses in Horden to grow and deal drugs, reports the Express.

One man was jailed for over three years in April after he was found hiding in a cannabis farm at a disused shop in Blackhills Road. Two years ago, feuding rival gang members clashed in Horden’s Fifth Street, where a stolen Transit van smashed into shop fronts and shots were fired before a high-speed chase through the village. Seven men were jailed for a combined 94 years after pleading guilty at Newcastle Crown Court.

Residents have voiced their concerns, claiming that Durham County Council is ignoring their housing issues. The council reportedly wants to buy and demolish homes on the Numbered Streets in Horden to make way for new builds, despite some locals having resided there all their lives.

The Numbered Streets, a well-known part of the village encompassing First Street through to 13th Street, were initially constructed in the early 1900s to accommodate the large community of coal mining families in the vicinity. Numerous family-friendly properties now stand vacant, with current listings priced significantly below £40K.

Local campaigner and published author Pip Fallow expressed his views: “Most of Europe has a shortage of houses. We’ve actually got the opposite, as no one is living there, it’s boarded up.” He remains sceptical that new housing developments will benefit Peterlee and its neighbouring villages.

“The proof’s in the pudding, there are houses there already and no one wants to live in them. There’s nothing to offer. You need to bring in new industry,” he further commented.

Another local, Liz MacPhee, described Horden as “quite a run-down area, lots of lovely houses, just boarded up” but since moving to the village, she’s found herself part of “a really strong community”. She relocated from the South of France in search of an affordable coastal home.

However, she alleges that her friends are now in danger of being evicted by the council, which is only offering them the average auction value for their properties. “We’re prepared to fight… all [the council] want is shiny new houses,” she added.

Durham County Council insists that the development, along with additional projects in the area around Peterlee, will enhance walking and cycling routes to Peterlee centre, its train station and the Durham Heritage Coast. Yet, residents argue that the council should be focusing on refurbishing the existing homes instead.

“The council isn’t listening to us,” Liz stated. “We want them refurbed as they are absolutely beautiful houses. “The council and the Government treated the miners really badly,” she added. “And now they’re coming back a second time to get their offspring.”

Horden and its surrounding areas have seen several new developments over the past few years, including a £10.55M train line between Newcastle and Middlesbrough that opened in June 2020. In July, it was announced that Believe Housing had proposed a new development in neighbouring Peterlee for 70 homes on disused land.

“It’s a beautiful part of the world”, Liz said. “But people here are so run down and have been treated so negatively in the past they feel it’s just something that’s just going to happen.”

When approached for comment by the Express, Michael Kelleher, head of planning and housing at Durham County Council, said: “The Horden Masterplan has been subject to extensive consultation with residents and has received strong support. The aim is to regenerate the village and improve life for local people by tackling issues such as the high number of empty homes in the Numbered Streets, supporting those with housing needs and enhancing community facilities.

“The acquisition of properties in Third and Fifth Street will pave the way for new council housing that is truly affordable, alongside the provision of private housing.

“We understand this is an unsettling time, and we are working closely with owners and landlords to negotiate the purchase of their properties and identify the housing needs of local people.

“Owners are not being offered auction prices. We have appointed an independent firm to undertake property valuations in line with the RICS Red Book Valuation approach, which is widely recognised as a standard approach to valuation. Tpas, a tenant engagement specialist, has also been appointed to provide residents with additional advice and support.”

Almost a dozen tourists were fined up to £130 last month for flouting a little-known rule in one of France’s most acclaimed seaside resorts, as visitors are told to have ‘a little restraint, please’

A popular seaside resort is threatening rule-breaking Brits with hefty fines for making one simple mistake. Famed for its 6.8-mile stretch of golden sand, emerald waters, and all-round charm, Les Sables-d’Olonne has quickly become a hotspot for both international and domestic tourists.

Situated on the Atlantic coast of western France, in the acclaimed Vendée subprefecture, this tiny port is jam-packed with things to do – from pristine golf courses, adrenaline-pumping water sports and its very own zoo. However, Mayor Yannic Moreau has recently warned tourists to have a ‘little restraint’ as the resort continues to clamp down on holidaymakers wearing their swimsuits in public.

The town first introduced a strict rule of wearing bikinis and swim shorts outside of the beach area back in 2020, and is determined to make the policy stick. Just last month, officials fined 10 people – all of whom were actually French – up to €150 (around £130). It comes after a warning to Brit tourists planning all-inclusive holidays to Spain.

According to the New York Times, the politician fumed: “If you go to a market to buy local food – fruits, vegetables, meat [etc] – you cannot be half-naked with hair falling onto vegetables.

“It’s a matter of decency… I don’t know if it’s a reflex to show one’s muscles or to tan more quickly and not lose an hour of sunlight.”

Mr Moreau added that tourists wanting to be ‘half or fully naked’ can do so at the beach, as Sables d’Olonne actually has its own nudist beach. In a recent social media post, he argued the rule had been implemented due to respect and hygiene, adding: “You do not want to be in contact with your neighbour’s skin.”

Of course, France is not the only country clamping down on scantily-clad tourists this summer. Over in the Spanish city of Málaga, the government has been displaying 10 strict rules visitors must follow as part of its ‘Improve Your Stay’ campaign, which first launched in 2024.

As previously reported, these demands have been displayed on buses, billboards and across social media and are designed to ‘ease tensions between tourists and residents’ following a string of protests that have plagued the country in recent months. The main rule: “Dress completely.”

While wearing a bikini or your swim shorts is perfectly acceptable when kicking back at your hotel pool or enjoying a day at the beach – wearing these types of clothing in the streets could result in a hefty fine of up to €750 (almost £650). “In some parts of Spain it’s illegal to be in the street wearing only a bikini or swimming shorts,” the FCDO states.

“Being bare-chested is also illegal in some areas in Spain. You could be fined if you’re caught wearing swimwear on the seafront promenade or adjacent streets.”

Portugal is another country cracking down on swimwear, particularly in the Brit-riddled hotspot of the Algarve. Tourists found showing too much skin when outside of ‘exempted areas’ such as hotels, beaches, beach access points, and swimming pools, may soon be fined a whopping £1,250.

EUGENE, Ore. — Track turned into a contact sport Sunday when Kenny Bednarek shoved Noah Lyles after Lyles beat him to the finish line in the 200-meter final at U.S. championships.

Lyles reeled in Bednarek in the homestretch to win in 19.63 seconds.

As he was crossing the finish line, Lyles turned to Bednarek in the lane next to him and started jawing at him. A few steps after they crossed, Bednarek reached out and gave Lyles a two-handed shove.

Lyles turned around, backpedaled and reached his arms out, then kept jawing at Bednarek. Their argument continued into the start of the NBC interview.

“I tell ya, if you’ve got a problem, I expect a call,” Bednarek said.

Lyles replied: “You know what, you’re right. You’re right. Let’s talk after this.”

Asked by the network’s Lewis Johnson what happened, Bednarek said: “I’m not going to say it out here, but we got something to do and talk about.”

The next chapter figures to play out Sept. 19 in Japan, where they’ll be among the favorites in the 200-meter final. Lyles is trying to match Usain Bolt with four straight world titles in his best race.

Lyles had a slow start to a season that has featured Bednarek opening as the dominant sprinter of 2025. Bednarek won the 100 meters Friday and also beat Lyles at the Olympics last year, finishing second in a race in which Lyles won bronze while suffering with COVID-19.

“It was a pretty difficult championship,” Lyles said. “I’ve been tired. It’s been rough. Coming out here when you’re not 100% and being able to say, ‘I still got to give my all no matter what happens.’ That’s tough. That’s tough.”

Melissa Jefferson-Wooden won the 200 in a personal-best time of 21.84 seconds, while Olympic champion Gabby Thomas had to wait a few anxious moments to see if she earned a spot on the world team. She did as her named popped up in third place.

It was a winning weekend for Jefferson-Wooden, who also captured the 100 on Friday. She will be joined in the 100 at worlds by Sha’Carri Richardson, who has an automatic spot as the defending champion. Richardson didn’t advance to the final in the 200.

The caddies go ahead of the US leaser and one appears to try and secretly place a golf ball on the ground.

The President then gets out and claims to have made the shot himself.

One person who watched the footage circulating on X wrote: “Caddy did that so smoothly. Can only imagine how many times he’s done it.”

“I want to know how he finds caddies to do that for him,” added another.

This comes as the US President arrived aboard Air Force One at around 8.30pm on Friday for his five-day private visit to Bonnie Scotland.

After waving to the crowds, he was welcomed by Scottish Secretary Ian Murray before being whisked to his luxury Turnberry resort 20 miles down the Ayrshire coast.

Villagers waved as the convoy passed through nearby Kirkoswald and later arrived at the resort at around 9.30pm.

And he wasted no time in taking to the green after being seen teeing off at the luxury resort.

Several protests were planned, with opponents of Mr Trump gathering in both Edinburgh and Aberdeen earlier this week.

The Stop Trump coalition has planned what it has described as being a “festival of resistance”.

Activists also shut down the Forth Road Bridge in South Queensferry as part of a huge protest ahead of Trump’s visit.

Climate campaigners from Greenpeace confirmed that 10 activists abseiled from the massive 156m bridge to block an INEOS tanker.

A large number of police and military personnel were seen searching the grounds at the golf resort to ensure Mr Trump’s safety before he teed off.

A high-profile security operation was in full swing with land, sea and air coverage from police and security services while a number of guests were checked over.

Secret service agents with sniffer dogs checked bushes as snipers were positioned on a platform on the edge of the course and the roof of the hotel.

Uniformed and plain clothes cops guarded all access points to the course, including roads, footpaths and the beach.

Amid the search, a few golfers were also spotted at the course, enjoying an early-morning game.

A number of onlookers had gathered at the entrance to Turnberry hoping to catch a glimpse of the game.

But they were not let anywhere near.

Police also had road closures in place, with limited access for locals and members of the media.

Upon his arrival, Mr Trump told reporters: “There’s no place like Turnberry. It’s the best course in the world.”

As well as visiting Trump Turnberry, Mr Trump will later head to Aberdeenshire and visit his golf resort in Balmedie.

During his stay, he will officially open his second course at Menie, named in honour of his late mother, Mary Anne MacLeod.

His visit is expected to last until Tuesday, July 29.

The President is also scheduled to meet Scottish First Minister John Swinney and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer during his trip.

After landing in Scotland, Mr Trump said the “invasion” of migrants is “killing” Europe and told the leaders to “get their act together”.

But when asked about illegal immigration, Mr Trump said a “horrible invasion” was taking place in Europe which needs to stop.

He said: “On immigration, you better get your act together.

“You’re not going to have Europe anymore, you’ve got to get your act together.

“As you know, last month we had nobody entering our country – nobody, [we] shut it down.”

He added: “You’ve got to stop this horrible invasion that’s happening to Europe.”

Mr Trump, who made a crackdown on illegal immigration a major policy in his second term at the White House, boasted: “Last month we had nobody entering our country.”

A massive £5million security operation has been rolled out to ensure his safety, with around 6,000 police officers drafted in from across the UK to support the efforts.

Johnny Seifert, 32, a veteran holidaymaker from Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, has gathered a treasure trove of tactics to maximise his time soaking up the rays.

The showbiz journalist and content creator has built quite a name for himself with his clever guidance on bagging the best sun lounger.

Now, he’s revealing everything about becoming the ideal sunbather – without causing any upset.

Should all the sunbeds be reserved by towels yet remain empty, Johnny recommends waiting an hour before moving the towels aside, reports the Daily Star.

He also maintains that demolishing a full-sized pizza – or any food requiring cutlery – whilst lounging is an absolute no-no.

For families or large groups, he recommends claiming clusters of sunbeds rather than a row, to reduce disturbance to fellow guests.

Johnny explained: “I’d keep an eye on the clock for an hour, and if nobody shows up, sorry – it’s my sunbed now. You can always play innocent and say you didn’t realise it was taken.”

“As for food, I’ve got no issue with you munching on breadsticks, or perhaps a slice of pizza. But a whole pizza, anything pungent, or if you’re scoffing a salad with mayo dribbling down your chin, do us a favour and find a table.

“Anything that needs a knife and fork, keep it away from the pool. Drinks, on the other hand, are absolutely fine!

“And for groups, take a circle, not a row – so you’re not shouting down a line. It’s just about finding ways not to disturb everyone else.”

Johnny suggested that brief calls around the pool using headphones are acceptable. However, anything on loudspeaker, such as music, is strictly prohibited, and video calls are a definite no-go. He advised to listen to music or conduct long phone calls in a private place away from your fellow sunbathers.

Johnny also quipped that he doesn’t want to hear someone’s ‘life story’ while they’re on a deckchair. While others might want to listen to music, Johnny said that most people want some peace and quiet.

He recommended that at hotels with multiple pools, parents should ensure their children stay within the designated children’s pool area and avoid venturing into the adult section.

Even adults who opt for a swim in the adult pool should refrain from causing any disturbance or splashing.

Johnny stated: “I want peace and quiet – when I’m ready for kids, I’ll sit by the kids pool. And no matter which pool, if you can see people lay down with books, don’t splash around too much.”

He also advised careful use of umbrellas to ensure they only shade the user and not others.

His final rule, which he stressed should never be broken, is against wearing skimpy speedo swimming briefs around the pool. While he acknowledges their appropriateness for sporting activities, he maintains they’re unsuitable for relaxing beside the hotel swimming area.

Netflix enthusiasts will recognise a familiar face in the latest Trainwreck documentary series.

The anthology of Netflix’s Trainwreck revisits some of the most terrifying and peculiar incidents that once ruled mainstream media. The series and films, from their viewpoint, delve into everything from disastrous festivals and political scandals to and horrific cruises and reality TV catastrophes.

Today’s episode (July 22) was the Trainwreck P. I. Moms, which takes viewers back to 2010 and a reality TV show about a private investigation agency run by soccer mums. Commissioned by Lifetime Networks, the mums were a group of mothers who trained as private investigators for Chris Butler and it was set to air on TV.

The group investigated everything from exposing unfaithful husbands to insurance scams. However, the show never made it to air, reports the Mirror US.

In the documentary, cast and crew reveal the reality TV show and how Chris Butler was subsequently arrested on multiple felony charges.

At the conclusion of Trainwreck, it states: “On May 4 2012, Chris Butler pleaded guilty to selling drugs, extortion, robbery, and planting illegal wiretaps. He was sentenced to eight years in prison.”

According to Netflix’s Tudum: “In 2010, Lifetime commissions a reality TV series about a private investigation agency staffed by soccer moms. Everyone is convinced they have the next big hit on their hands, until the production crew starts to notice something is off.

“The moms’ investigations keep falling apart, leading to allegations of sabotage. “I thought I wanted to go four innings, but my pitch count was piling up,” Ohtani said in Japanese.

Ohtani didn’t know it at the time, but he spent six seasons preparing for something like this. On the Angels, he was a great player on a horrible team, which is what the Dodgers are at this moment.

Roberts observed that Ohtani wasn’t driven by personal glory. He pointed to how Ohtani offered no resistance when he said he wanted to switch him and Mookie Betts in the batting order, with Ohtani dropping from the leadoff to No. 2 spot.

Ohtani batted first in every game until Sunday when Roberts moved a slumping Betts to the top of the lineup with hopes of jump-starting his season.

When Roberts texted Ohtani his thoughts the previous night, Ohtani replied by telling him to do whatever was best for the team, even if that meant batting him ninth.

“I have absolutely no problem with it,” Ohtani said. “What’s most important is that everyone can hit comfortably.”

Ohtani’s homers in the last two games came right after Betts reached base in front of him, with a single on Sunday against the Milwaukee Brewers and with a walk on Monday against Twins starter David Festa.

“He wants to win,” Roberts said of Ohtani. “I think that him playing every day, him pitching, him taking walks when needed and switching spots with Mookie in the order, whatever is in the best interest of the ballclub, that’s what he’s doing.”

Ohtani is now 31. There are questions about whether his body can still withstand the workload required to play both ways, and rightfully so. But as the Dodgers have trudged through this midseason slump, Ohtani has revealed the spirit that was fundamental in making him the best player in the world. Roberts will wager the season on it. The destination is incredibly popular among Australians and global surfers in southern Bali, yet has become a source of frustration for local politicians. Local government officials say none of the buildings have been built with the correct permits, ABC News reported.

Bali’s governor, I Wayan Koster, marched to the beach alongside demolition workers armed with crowbars and sledge hammers. “The buildings for tourism businesses here are illegal — that’s it. We should not let this practice continue. If we let this go on, Bali will be damaged,” he said.

Authorities have denied rumours that the demolition was carried out so a high-end resort can be built.

Eleven-time world surfing champion Kelly Slater took to social media to condemn the move. He wrote: “Awful to hear and see that the beachfront at Bingin in Bali has been bought up and all the local (eateries) and other businesses will be demolished to make room for some kind of beach club and not sure what else?

“Bali has been completely mishandled and ruined by foreign interests in recent years. I hope something can be done to retain the culture and beauty of what attracted everyone there in the first place.”

Once-pristine beaches like Kuta and Seminyak are now buried under piles of trash, with local waste management systems struggling to keep up,” Fodors writes.

Earlier this year, faced with the challenges of overtourism, officials in Bali proposed introducing a daily tourist tax, similar to Bhutan’s $100 (€£79) Sustainable Development Fee, which is charged to most international visitors.

Wayan Puspa Negara, head of the Bali Marginal Tourism Actors Alliance and a lawmaker in Bali’s Badung regency, told the South China Morning Post that he envisions Bali “selecting” tourists, much like Bhutan does. The Himalayan nation restricts its annual tourist intake to just 400,000 people and has previously charged up to $250 (£198) per day for visitors, Euronews reports. Tourists are also obliged to hire a guide, driver and transport from any official tour agency.

The picturesque setting makes the perfect backdrop for a scenic walk, picnic, or swim – if you can brave the cold water. I visited for the first time recently, keen for a cooling dip on a warm July day, and it’s already one of the best things I’ve done all summer.

After parking in a nearby lay-by, it took us approximately 30 minutes to walk the rocky path that descends to the river. It was well worth the effort when we reached the pools and the small waterfalls found near the packhorse bridge.

Understandably, it was very busy when we arrived around midday on a Saturday, with groups playing music and families enjoying ball games. So if you’re looking for a tranquil swimming spot, you’ll likely need to wait until the end of the summer season. Alternatively, you could plan an early morning visit to secure a quiet spot around one of the smaller pools, perfect for a dip or a chilled morning spent taking in the fairytale scenery.

Everyone in my group agreed we’d love to go back another time, so it’s somewhere I’d definitely recommend if you’re planning a wild swim and you’re comfortable with the sloped, rocky walk. Just remember to take care and pack any essentials you’ll need, such as water bottles.

Praising the spot on TripAdvisor, one visitor wrote: “An amazingly beautiful place with walks all around. Great for open air bathing. Take care though, the water is cold so know your stuff.”

Sharing advice, someone else said: “Lots of reviews have said it is a bit of a walk to get here, but I found a website that suggested a short route, which took about 15/20 minutes. There was plenty of parking in the lay-by.

“Slight climb down a ladder, but OK if you have good mobility. The walk is through fields with sheep so if you have a dog, please keep them on lead (like we did). We found a little spot where nobody else was, but we were there early, and people started to arrive by midday.

“It was a really hot day, but the water was still quite chilly. There are some lovely little waterfalls and the water is clean. There’s no shops nearby so make sure you take everything you need for the time you plan to spend there- drinks, food, suncream etc.”

Meanwhile, an impressed visitor said: “Three Shires Head feels like a hidden world, waterfalls, old packhorse bridges, and proper peace and quiet. It’s a stunning spot for a ramble, with views that make you stop in your tracks. A proper breath of fresh air.”

The closest postcode for Three Shires Head is SK11 0BQ, and there is free parking in the lay-by on the A54. The closest train station, Macclesfield Station, is 25 minutes away. However, you will need a car to drive from the station.

A list of the best staycation experiences in the UK was compiled by British travel expert and author, Richard Madden, along with Sykes Holiday Cottages, unveiling an essential bucket list for holiday-goers.

A breathtaking drive along the Isle of Arran’s coast in Scotland has emerged as the top choice, according to a survey of 2,000 adults about their staycation dreams.

Often dubbed ‘Scotland in miniature’, the Isle of Arran boasts a range of spectacular landscapes, with the 109km Arran Coastal Way providing views of the coastline, charming villages, and mountain peaks.

Journeying around the stunning Isle of Arran presents ample opportunities to discover remnants of Scotland’s Gaelic and Norse heritage. It features numerous coastal towns, such as Lochranza and Kildonan, where you can enjoy a walk on beautiful beaches and explore ancient castle ruins.

Scotland is renowned for its rich culture and history, which you’ll experience at every turn when exploring Arran.

Things to do in Arran

Hiking

The breathtaking natural landscape of Arran offers a wealth of opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts, particularly those who enjoy hiking.

Brodick, the island’s capital and primary point of entry for most visitors, is home to the Brodick and Goatfell range. This impressive collection of jagged granite peaks is dominated by Goatfell, the highest mountain on the island, which is often considered the easiest to ascend.

Lochranza, located in the north, serves as the starting point for several picturesque coastal walks. During low tide, you might even spot some seals.

The area also features a ruined castle and is situated near the quaint village of Pirnmill and its surrounding hills, offering stunning views.

Explore the beaches

Arran’s coastline boasts a plethora of beautiful beaches waiting to be explored. If you find yourself in Brodick, head further north to Strabane for expansive sandy stretches and crystal-clear waters.

Lamlash also offers several small sandy coves and shallow waters, particularly towards the south of the village.

Kildonan’s ‘silver sands’ beach is often hailed as one of Arran’s most beautiful spots. It offers incredible views across Pladda to the mainland, and you might even spot some seals, so keep your eyes peeled.

One of Arran’s best-kept secrets is Kilmory beach, with its pristine white sands nestled within a sheltered cove. From here, you can also catch a glimpse of the island of Ailsa Craig.

Enjoy local food and drinks

In addition to its stunning natural beauty, Arran is a haven for foodies with an array of restaurants, cafes, pubs, breweries and distilleries each offering their own unique delights.

Take for instance, the Douglas Bistro, renowned for its ‘modern yet classic’ approach to dining. The chefs here use fresh, seasonal ingredients from Arran and Ayrshire such as shellfish, venison and beef, all served in a sophisticated yet relaxed atmosphere.

For those who love a cuppa, Cafe Rosaburn at the Arran Heritage centre is a must-visit. This delightful spot offers homemade sweet treats and freshly brewed beverages.

Summer is the ideal time to visit, with the opportunity to enjoy a picnic in the riverside gardens and indulge in some Arran ice cream from the gift shop.

Visit the brewery

No journey to Arran would be complete without a stop at the Isle of Arran brewery. Since 2000, this establishment has been crafting award-winning real ales on the island.

With a range from blondes to bitters to stouts, there’s a brew for every palate, and visitors can even embark on a tour to learn about the brewing process.

ONE popular London swim spot is getting a huge makeover with new facilities and green spaces.

The West Reservoir Centre in Stoke Newington that’s been open to swimmers for 20 years is getting an upgrade.

Found in north London the West Reservoir Centre sees thousands descend on the reservoir for open-water swimming, sailing and kayaking courses.

While the reservoir is about to undergo a transformation, the actual water isn’t – because it’s a reservoir.

Instead, the surrounding area will become much more accessible and greener, too.

The goal is to create “a more welcoming destination for both local residents and visitors.”

Designs reveal a new cafe, reception area, grass edge and two accessible entrances.

Other additions include modern changing rooms and cycle parking spaces to encourage biking to the reservoir.

There will be new accessible bridges built over the north and south parts of New River.

Plus, a new walkway on the east side of the reservoir will be created.

The website states that the centre will remain open throughout the project “for the thousands of people who visit the site each week for open water swimming and water sports.”

The work is expected to be completed by summer 2026 at a cost of close to £3.5 million.

It’s all being funded by the Greater London Authority as an effort to improve community spaces and create a better space for the people of Stoke Newington.

Caroline Woodley, Hackney mayor, said that the changes are “about so much more than bricks and mortar”.

She continued to describe the centre as “one of Hackney’s hidden gems, a place where communities connect with nature, get active and enjoy some of the borough’s most stunning open-water views.”

The reservoir has a number of swim courses ranging from a 100m warm up lap to a 300m loop.

As it’s an outdoor course, they are dependent on weather conditions and water temperature.

At West Reservoir Centre, the cost for a single open water swim is £10 for non-members and £7.70 for Pay As You Go members.

Another popular lido is Brockwell which the AA revealed to be the best in the country.

The south-west London lido features a 1930s art deco, Grade II listed building, a large 50m pool and even it’s own cafe.

Anyone not keen on swimming can visit the sauna, and there are plenty of spots to sunbathe too.

Plus, I’ve found the little-known lidos in the UK to visit ahead of 33C weather – there are no queues and some are even free.
