The retail titan, Asda, has opened the doors to its brand-new Express in Castleford, West Yorkshire,

It’s the first time Asda has taken its famous yellow and green brand into the world of small-format convenience stores, as it looks to take on Tesco Express and Sainsbury’s Local head-on.

The new shop, built on the site of a former pub on Holywell Lane, has been completely transformed into a slick, modern mini-market packed with more than 3,000 products.

From meal deals and snacks to fresh fruit, booze and ready meals, locals can now grab all their essentials in one quick stop.

It’s open every day from 6am to 11pm, making it perfect for early risers, night owls, and anyone in desperate need of milk after hours.

The store also comes kitted out with handy extras, including a Costa Coffee machine, ATM, and Amazon collection point, plus, you can get your shopping delivered via Uber Eats, Just Eat or Deliveroo.

Shopping bargains

Asda says the new Express format is designed to bring its trademark low prices and big-brand bargains to places where it’s not always had a strong presence.

New locations will pop up in busy city centres, transport hubs and even residential areas.

It’s all part of the supermarket’s mission to “bring unbeatable value to even more communities” across the UK, according to bosses.

Joseph Sutton, Asda’s Vice President for Express, Foodservice and Fuel, said:

“We’re delighted to have opened the doors today in Castleford, marking the start of our Express store rollout as we bring Asda’s unbeatable value to new communities across the UK.”

He added: “From top-up essentials to convenient food-on-the-go options, we’re excited to welcome new customers and offer outstanding value.”

Rapid growth

Asda first dipped its toe into the convenience market in 2022, and things have moved fast.

The supermarket now plans to have around 500 Express stores open by the end of the year, with even more coming in 2026.

Each store will also feature electronic shelf-edge labels (a fancy way of saying digital price tags), designed to make life easier for staff and keep prices crystal clear for shoppers.

So whether you’re nipping in for bread and milk or a cheeky lunchtime sandwich, chances are you’ll soon be doing it in an Asda Express near you.

It come’s after Asda announced its price reductions, cutting the cost of nearly 1,000 everyday products.

The reductions will be available both in-store and online and will include massive discounts on cupboard staples such as pasta, cooking sauces and tea and coffee.

Meanwhile, Asda is following three other major supermarkets in introducing a big change to aisles across 186 stores from October.

The supermarket chain has introduced dedicated menopause aisles as has online grocery store Ocado.

This roll-out hopes to “raise awareness and understanding of the menopause experience,” said Matt Pryde, Senior Buying Manager for Asda Toiletries.

How to save at Asda

Shop the budget range

Savvy shopper Eilish Stout-Cairns recommends that shoppers grab items from Asda’s Just Essentials range.

She said: “Asda’s budget range is easy to spot as it’s bright yellow! Keep your eyes peeled for yellow and you’ll find their Just Essentials range.

“It’s great value and I’ve found it has a much wider selection of budget items compared to other supermarkets.

 Sign up to Asda Rewards 

The savvy-saver also presses on the importance of signing up to Asda’s reward scheme.

She said: “Asda Rewards is free to join and if you shop at Asda you should absolutely sign up.

“As an Asda Rewards member, you’ll get exclusive discounts and offers, and you’ll also be able to earn 10% cashback on Star Products.

“This will go straight into your cashpot, and once you’ve earned at least £1, you can transfer the money in your cashpot into ASDA vouchers.

Look out for booze deals

Eilish always suggests that shoppers looking to buy booze look out for bargain deals.

She said: “Asda often has an alcohol offer on: buy six bottles and save 25%.

“The offer includes selected bottles with red, white and rose options, as well as prosecco. There are usually lots of popular bottles included, for example, Oyster Bay Hawkes Bay Merlot, Oyster Bay Hawkes Bay Merlot and Freixenet Prosecco D.O.C.

“Obviously, the more expensive the bottles you choose, the more you save.”

Join Facebook groups

The savvy saver also recommends that fans of Asda join Facebook groups to keep in the know about the latest bargains in-store.

Eilish said: “I recommend joining the Latest Deals Facebook Group to find out about the latest deals and new launches in store.

“Every day, more than 250,000 deal hunters share their latest bargain finds and new releases. 

“For example, recently a member shared a picture of Asda’s new Barbie range spotted in store.

“Another member shared the bargain outdoor plants she picked up, including roses for 47p, blackcurrant bushes for 14p and topiary trees for 14p.”

McVitie’s launches new selection box of festive Penguin flavours that chocolate fans will love

SWEET-TOOTHED fans can now get their hands on a new Penguin selection box.

McVitie’s has revealed its first ever Penguin Selection Box as part of its festive lineup of products.

The box (RRP £3) includes six Penguin treats across a variety of flavours.

There are two original Penguin milk chocolate biscuit bars, one Penguin Mint, one Penguin Orange, in addition to two bags of mini biscuits.

The biscuit bags are in the Cocoa and Cocoa & Orange flavours.

McVitie’s says that the box “comes in bright seasonal packaging featuring the iconic Penguin jokes, along with a maze and word search on the back.”

While savvy shoppers have spotted the box on Asda shelves, it has yet to be listed online.

The new product does feature on the Tesco website, where it is currently marked as “out of stock”.

Other festive finds

McVitie’s festive range also includes the Chocolate Digestives Anniversary Tin, celebrating 100 years since the inception of these beloved biscuits.

The 340g tin contains milk, dark chocolate and white digestives.

You can find this exclusively in Sainsbury’s for £7.50.

And McVitie’s are adding a seasonal spin to a much-loved favourite, giving their White Digestives a festive makeover with playful snowflakes and snowmen packaging.

McVitie’s isn’t the only brand to have revealed new festive products.

The M&S Christmas range for 2025 includes new products such as the Original Peanut Butter & Jelly Munch, as well as a Peanut Butter & Jelly Spread.

The iconic Munch tins first launched in 2021, but this year’s version has been given an American twist, with the treats now available as a peanut butter and jelly flavour.

Last year, the M&S Very Merry Munch tin was advertised as “perfect for movie nights”, with fans calling it “heaven”.

Marmite fans may also like to try the Pecan & Salted Caramel Blondies with a hint of marmite, as well as the new M&S marmite caramel sauce.

Mars have also revealed new Christmas chocolate treats, including a Milky Way Advent Calendar released for the first time and sold exclusively in Asda.

If you’re a Tesco shopper, you’ll be able to get hold of the new Galaxy Miniatures Pouch.

Shoppers were quick to spot the new pouches on the supermarket shelves, with some taking to the Snack Reviews Facebook group to comment: “This bag is perfect,” said one user.

“I need some of these,” added another.

The 260g pouches contain a mix of individually wrapped Galaxy chocolates in the original Smooth Milk and Caramel flavours.

Bargain UK supermarket is selling 25p Cadbury’s selection boxes – £2.50 cheaper than rival

IF you’re already planning ahead for the festive season, you can nab a huge saving on Christmas chocolate right now.

The bargain comes after news that struggling Poundland is going back to basics, with plans to increase the number of products sold in store for just a quid.

The Cadbury’s 25p selection box weighs in at 125g and includes a selection of favourite treats.

This includes Cadbury’s Dairy Milk Freddo Caramel, Fudge, Crunchie,, Dairy Milk Little Bar, Treatsize Buttons and a Wispa.

An identical selection box is on sale at Iceland‘s for £2,50.

But you will have to pop into your local Poundland to pick up the bargain as Poundland‘s website is now for browsing only.

A statement on the site reads: “We’re currently working very hard behind the scenes to simplify and refocus our stores.

“And that means very soon there’ll be even more ranges at £1 and new items to choose from each week.

“Unfortunately, we will no longer be providing an online delivery service from the 16th September 2025.

“While we know most of our online shoppers also visit us regularly in stores (thank you!), we know this will be disappointing to all who’ve been using our online ordering service.”

Cheapest UK supermarket to buy Christmas chocolate tubs

Whether you’re indulging in the festive treats ahead of time or you’re stocking up for your friends, family, and co-workers, this deal offers impressive savings.

The offer comes after Morrisons slashed the price of a variety of chocolate tubs from £7 to just £4.50.

Now, Tesco is giving shoppers a chance match this price, with some tubs reduced right now.

Clubcard holders can avail of significant savings with tubs of Cadbury’s Heroes and Roses reduced to just £5.25.

Nestle Celebrations and Quality Street are also available for just £4.50.

Sainsbury’s slashes the price of Cadbury favourites starting today

Supermarkets often watch each other’s sales and try to price match especially in the lead up to Christmas.

And Sainsbury’s is slashing the price of Cadbury favourites for five days only starting today.

The promotion will take the price of Heroes and Roses tubs down from £7 to £4.50 – perfect for anyone looking to stock up ahead of the festive season.

A large box of Milk Tray will see its cost halve from £11 to £5.50

And pouches including Cadbury giant buttons, crunchie rocks, oreo bites, twirl bites, will fall from £1.95 to 97p.

Large 90g bars of Cadbury Dairy Milk will drop from £2.20 to £1.50.

The discounted prices take effect from Wednesday September 17 and will last until Sunday September 21.

However, they are only available to Nectar account holders, so you’ll need to sign up for the loyalty scheme if you are not already a member.

Major supermarket chain makes huge change to stores that will help customers access cash

A SUPERMARKET giant has made a huge change to its shops, in a boost for customers who want to pay with cash.

Morrisons has introduced 40 cash machines into its supermarkets across the UK, making it the UK’s largest non-bank network.

A further 13 ATMs are set to launch in the coming months to make it even easier for customers to access cash.

Shoppers can use the ATMs to withdraw and pay in money as part of their regular shop.

The ATMs are now available in the following Morrisons supermarkets:

So far, more than £1million a month has been paid into banks using these ATMs.

The machines are operated by NoteMachine and were delivered thanks to a partnership with Cash Access UK, a company funded by major high street banks to bring cash services to communities.

Ben Mildred, treasury manager at Morrisons, said: “We’re proud to be helping make banking more accessible by offering cash deposit services in our stores.

“Customers have told us they like the flexibility and convenience the cash deposit ATMs offer and so we are pleased to be rolling them out to more stores in the coming weeks.”

The news comes after UK banks closed more than a third of branches over the past five years, leaving customers without access to banking services.

Lloyds, Halifax, NatWest and Bank of Scotland are set to shut more than 100 bank branches by the end of the year.

Elsewhere, Santander is set to close 95 branches and reduce hours at another 50.

Other ways you can access cash

There are still several ways you can access basic banking services without having to travel to another town with a branch.

If all the banks in your town have closed then you may be able to get a banking hub.

Banks visit the hub on a rotating basis, and take it in turns to use the site on different days of the week.

You can use them to withdraw cash, pay in money, check your balance and pay bills.

Another option is to visit one of the Post Office’s 11,684 branches to do basic banking tasks such as paying in or withdrawing cash.

But you will still need to visit a branch to open a new bank account, take out a personal loan or mortgage.

You can find your nearest Post Office by visiting postoffice.co.uk/branch-finder.

Many banks also offer a mobile banking service, which is when they bring a bus to your area to provide services you can usually get at a physical branch.

Other banks use buildings such as village halls or libraries to offer mobile banking services.

You should check your bank’s website to see what mobile services are available and when they might next be in your area.

New super ATMs are being rolled out across the UK where branch closures have left residents unable to access essential banking services.

These ATMs will allow customers to withdraw funds, access their balance, change PIN numbers and deposit cash.

‘It’s still summer,’ cry Morrisons shoppers as traditional Christmas treat spotted on shelves ALREADY

WE may be in the midst of a late summer heatwave, but clearly some people are thinking ahead to Christmas – as Morrisons has already started selling mince pies.

An eagle-eyed shopper posted an image of the festive dessert on sale at their local Morrisons in Sheffield on August 16.

The photo, on Instagram account @newfoodspotteruk, shows a pack of six shortcrust mince pies, priced at £1.50 and set to expire on August 29 – almost four months before Christmas.

Mince pies are also available on the Morrisons website at the same price point. As well as shortcrust, deep filled (£2) and puff pastry (£1) mince pies are also now on sale.

Shoppers were outraged at the high street chain stocking Yuletide snacks in August

“Get stuffed it’s still summer,” commented one outraged follower. Others were less concerned, with one remarking that the pies “need some Baileys squirty cream [clapping emoji]”.

Morrisons is not the only major retailer with Christmas products for sale in the height of summer. Rival supermarket ASDA were already selling their range of mince pies in June.

Meanwhile, B&M were recently at the centre of an online spat after they were caught stocking Advent calendars and selection boxes.

One concerned commenter complained: “The way the chocolate is going in b&m during this heat, I would hate to think what it would be like in Dec!”

It’s also not the first time shoppers have noticed Morrisons stocking festive treats in summer.

Earlier in August, a father of three was shocked to find Milkybars branded with snowflake and other yuletide imagery on the shelves. Last year, The Telegraph reported that the chain was selling six different types of mince pie by the end of August.

When it comes to non-food items, like Advent calendars or decorations, experts note that August is the ideal time to start shopping and bag a bargain.

All the supermarkets slashing prices of school uniforms this week – and items start from £1.50

A HOST of major supermarkets have slashed the price of school uniform ahead of the new academic year.

The cost of getting kids back to school isn’t cheap but you could save some cash on clothes this week.

Asda, Aldi and Tesco have all dropped prices on their uniform bits or are launching bundle offers with prices starting from £1.50.

We’ve rounded up all the deals below.

Of course, always remember to shop around when buying any product, not least school uniform.

Compare prices via price comparison sites like Trolley, Price Spy and Price Runner to see if you’ve found the best deal on any given item.

The Google Shopping/Product tab will give you a basic indication on whether what you’ve found is well-priced as well.

That said, research by The Sun has found Aldi and Lidl are offering the lowest prices this year.

Asda

Asda has slashed prices on hundreds of school uniform bits with 20% off trousers, shirts and polos.

Prices start from £1.60 for crew neck t-shirts and range up to £16 for five-packs of slim leg boys trousers.

Parents can also buy hoodies for £4, jersey skirts for £5.60 and five-packs of long sleeve tops for £12.

Shoppers on Facebook claim the 20% off offer is running in stores as well.

We have asked Asda if it is available across all stores and what date the offer is running until both online and in-store and will update this story when we’ve heard back.

Aldi

German discounter Aldi is bringing back it’s popular £5 school uniform bundle deal on Sunday (June 29).

The bundle includes two polo shirts, a sweatshirt or cardigan, and a choice of trousers, skirt or cargo shorts – all for a fiver.

Shoppers can’t buy the bundle online as Aldi doesn’t offer a home delivery service.

As with all Aldi Specialbuys, you’ll need to act fast as once they’re gone, they’re gone.

You don’t have to buy the whole bundle and can buy individual uniform items, with prices starting from £1.50.

Sizes are available for kids aged four to 12.

Tesco

Tesco has launched a 25% off sale on its school uniform bits in store and online for Clubcard customers.

You can sign up for a Clubcard for free via the Tesco website or by downloading the app for free on to your smartphone.

The offer is running until June 29, with non-Clubcard prices starting from £3 (£2.25 for Clubcard) for a two-pack of crew neck t-shirt.

Sizes are available for kids aged between four and 16.

If you can’t afford to buy school uniform now, Tesco is re-running the 25% off offer between July 22 and July 27.

Alongside the school uniform deal, shoppers can pick up stationery with prices starting from 25p.

Grants to help with school uniform costs are offered by several councils across England, with up to £200 free cash available to parents.

The Household Support Fund (HSF) is designed to help those on a low income, benefits, or classed as vulnerable.

To apply, you’ll need to get in touch with your local council. Most councils have pages on their website dedicated to the HSF, while you can also call your local authority to find out if you are eligible for the support scheme.

Unlike in England, all local authorities in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales offer school uniform grants.

It’s also worth checking out your local charity shop to see what’s on offer.

Some charity shops have deals with uniform manufacturers and retailers meaning you can get brand new items at bargain prices.

Meanwhile, many schools and community groups run second-hand uniform exchanges where parents can find and donate uniforms.

ASDA is set to roll out a huge shake-up across 180 in-store cafes with the launch of new menu items and digital ordering screens.

The retailer will start the makeover this month with all works set to be complete by the end of October.

The 180 cafes, managed by Compass Group, will be upgraded to include new digital ordering screens where shoppers can pick what food and drink they want.

Customers will also be able to order from their tables or via staffed tills.

A number of existing menu items will continue to be on sale including full English breakfasts, fish and chips, lasagne and jacket potatoes.

But some new ones will be added as well, including smashed avocado on toast, katsu chicken curry, topped salad bowls and wraps.

Shoppers will be able to buy full 12inch pizzas or single pizza slices from the cafes for the first time as well.

Customers can pick from flavours including margherita, pepperoni, American sizzler, spicy chicken and meat feast.

There will also be a range of hot drinks on offer as well as cold ones like iced coffees and cakes.

Asda’s “Kids Eat for £1” café meal deals will remain available.

We have asked Asda how much some of the menu items will cost and for the full list of 180 stores where cafes will be freshened up and will update this story when we have heard back.

Four simple ways to save money at Asda

Ian McEvans, vice president of commercial food at Asda, said: “This significant investment alongside allows us to bring a new look and feel, as well making improvements to the service and a refresh of the menu.”

It comes after some other changes at Asda, including the retailer ditching Star Products on its loyalty scheme at the start of the year.

However, the move to axe the feature came as the supermarket brought back its Rollback price commitment at the end of January.

Asda introduced the price cuts at its more than 1,200 stores meaning lower prices on 4,000 products.

Then in March, prices were lowered on 10,000 products by up to 45% as the retailer looked to steal its rivals’ customers.

New Asda boss Allan Leighton insisted the supermarket’s turnaround was on last month, despite the supermarket’s sales falling 3.1% in the four months to the end of April.

In May last year, Asda said it would invest majorly overhaul 170 stores as part of a £50million makeover.

SUPERMARKETS SHAKING UP IN-STORE CAFES

The latest announcement from Asda on its in-store cafe upgrades comes as two other major supermarkets row back on their cafe offerings.

Sainsbury’s shut 61 in-store cafes in April as it looks to explore “future opportunities” for the spaces.

The retailer said it was closing its remaining in-store cafes due to lower footfall and as its hybrid cafe and food halls become more popular.

It is likely to replace the cafes with restaurants run by franchises, such as Starbucks and Gourmet Burger Kitchen.

In March, Morrisons said it would shut 52 cafes as part of a huge overhaul of its store estate.

The retailer also said 18 Market Kitchens, 13 florists, 35 meat counters, 35 fish counters and four pharmacies would shut.

Iceland to close two major stores starting in DAYS

SUPERMARKET chain Iceland is closing two stores starting in days as shoppers share their devastation.

The frozen food specialist is shutting a location in Margate on the Kent coast on June 21.

Meanwhile, a further branch will close for good in Inverness, Scotland, on July 12.

The retailer said in a statement that staff at both sites have been offered roles at surrounding stores “where possible”.

But news of the closures has still been met with heartbreak from locals and shoppers.

One, posting on Facebook about the Margate closure, said: “Margate is losing everything bit by bit.”

Another added: “Can the town centre get any worse with empty buildings.”

Commenting on the Inverness branch shutting, one shopper said: “Very sad to hear this news.”

Another chipped in: “I’m so gutted.”

The closure of the Inverness branch means there will no longer be any Iceland stores in the Scottish city.

The nearest Iceland store will be in Aberdeen while there is a Food Warehouse, run by Iceland, in Inverness’s Telford Street.

It’s not the first store closure made by Iceland in the past few months.

It pulled down the shutters permanently on its site in Welling at the start of the year.

A site in Borehamwood and another in Exeter permanently shut around the same time.

The latest closures means Iceland has shut more than 20 stores since the start of 2023.

It’s worth bearing in mind retailers often shut branches in underperforming areas and open them where they think they’ll get more footfall and sales.

For example, it’s not all bad new for Iceland as in 2024 it announced plans to open more of its Food Warehouse format stores across the UK.

Food Warehouse stores, run by the Iceland Foods Group, are generally larger than Iceland shops and usually found in retail parks.

OTHER RETAIL CLOSURES

The retail sector has struggled in recent years due to the onset of online shopping and lockdowns during the coronavirus pandemic.

Higher inflation since 2022 has also hit shoppers’ budgets while businesses have struggled with higher wage, tax and energy costs.

The Centre for Retail Research has described the sector as going through a “permacrisis” since the 2008 financial crash.

Figures from the Centre also show 34 retail companies operating multiple stores stopped trading in 2024, leading to the closure of 7,537 shops.

This was the highest number of stores affected in a calendar year since the Centre started collecting this data in 2007.

On top of these more than 7,500 stores, over 11,000 independent shops closed in 2024.

This is in addition to almost 7,800 independent stores that closed in 2023.

RETAIL PAIN IN 2025

The British Retail Consortium predicted that the Treasury’s hike to employer NICs will cost the retail sector £2.3billion.

Research by the British Chambers of Commerce showed that more than half of companies planned to raise prices by early April.

A survey of more than 4,800 firms also found that 55% expect prices to increase in the next three months, up from 39% in a similar poll conducted in the latter half of 2024.

Three-quarters of companies cited the cost of employing people as their primary financial pressure.

The Centre for Retail Research (CRR) has also warned that around 17,350 retail sites are expected to shut down this year.

It comes on the back of a tough 2024 when 13,000 shops closed their doors for good, already a 28% increase on the previous year.

Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the CRR said: “The results for 2024 show that although the outcomes for store closures overall were not as poor as in either 2020 or 2022, they are still disconcerting, with worse set to come in 2025.”

Professor Bamfield has also warned of a bleak outlook for 2025, predicting that as many as 202,000 jobs could be lost in the sector.

“By increasing both the costs of running stores and the costs on each consumer’s household it is highly likely that we will see retail job losses eclipse the height of the pandemic in 2020.

Lidl shoppers reveal trick to get ‘hidden’ freebies – and you don’t need to spend anything

LIDL shoppers say they’ve been getting hidden freebies through the discount supermarket’s loyalty app.

Customers have been raving about the free finds they’ve managed to get through the Lidl Plus app, including doughnuts, fresh fruit and pasta.

It’s all through the app’s Coupon Plus feature, which lets shoppers unlock rewards and freebies when they spend.

Several shoppers have been sharing their bargains on the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK Facebook Group, with one saying: “Today checked my app so free doughnuts (2) free grapefruit free vine tomatoes free 600g of strawberries saved about £7.00.”

Another shared a photo of a receipt showing they had got muffins, a punnet of strawberries and pasta.

“All free with my Lidl coupon plus rewards,” they said proudly.

A third person said they had got coupons for free fruit, veg and a bakery item on their app despite not spending anything at Lidl yet this month.

A fourth said they received a free kilo punnet of strawberries.

Lidl has said the coupons in its app are tailor-made for each customer based on their shopping habits.

To get the vouchers you should head to the Coupons Plus section of the app and make sure you activate the coupons before you head to the till.

The offers seem to change over time but one example is getting a free bakery sweet treat when you spend £10 in a month.

Shoppers have also shared an extra little-known tip that can help you get the most out of your coupons.

One social media user said that when you have a free item in the coupons section of the app, you should click on the picture of the item and scroll down to where it says ‘item number’.

That means you’re not just limited to the free item seen in the picture.

What other offers can you get through the Lidl Plus app?

If it’s your birthday you can get a free doughnut from the Lidl bakery section.

There’s no minimum spend required and the coupon is valid for seven days from your birthday.

All you need to do to get the offer is register your birthday when you initially sign up to the app.

Other offers you can get through the Lidl Plus app include a 10% off voucher when you spend £250 in-store in a month.

This could be particularly helpful for larger families doing their weekly shops at Lidl.

There is also currently a chance to win £5,000 through the app.

Shoppers who spend £30 in one transaction with Lidl Plus from now until June 18 will be entered into a draw to win the cash.

One winner will be announced every day and you can enter multiple times.

IF you’ve ever shopped in Aldi or Lidl then you’ll probably have experienced its ultra-fast checkout staff.

Aldi’s speedy reputation is no mistake, in fact, the supermarket claims that its tills are 40 per cent quicker than rivals.

Aldi’s pizza cooked in 12 minutes

It cooked nicely in 12 minutes and was big enough to feed four people.

The base was deliciously crispy and the cheese and tomato topping tasted authentically Italian.

I haven’t tried this flavour from Aldi before, but absolutely will in the future – my winner – and less than half the price of Pizza Express, that’s dinner sorted.

Good value and a perfect size for two.

I wasn’t so keen on this one as I thought it was a bit bland and there wasn’t enough cheese to tempt my tastebuds.

A HOST of stores are shutting for good this weekend including a historic department store.

Retailers have struggled over recent years as shoppers’ wallets and purses take a hit from high inflation.

An increase in employer National Insurance contributions and wage costs since April has added to the pressure.

Combined with soaring business rates, energy and rental costs, some retailers have been forced to hike prices and even shut stores.

It’s worth bearing in mind of course that retailers close shops for a host of reasons and not always because of a poor economic backdrop.

Sometimes chains will shut a poorly-performing branch in one area and open another further afield where they think they’ll see better footfall.

Plenty of retailers are moving away from high streets and towards out-of-town retail parks too.

In any case, five shops will shut this weekend including a more than 120-year-old department store.

Here is the full list of shops we know are closing down permanently.

Ginger

Norwich-based Ginger will pull down its shutters for the final time on Saturday.

The shop was founded by David and Rodger Kingsley in 1978 following the success of their sister company Jonathan Trumbull in 1971.

But current store manager Beckie Kingsley said the store will close due to the economic climate and aftermath of Covid-19.

She said: “It’s with truly heavy hearts that, after 46 unforgettable years, we have made the incredibly difficult decision to close the doors at our beautiful, beloved and historic Timber Hill home.

“This led us to ask – does it still work for us? After deep reflection, the answer, sadly, is no.”

Daniel of Ealing

Historic department store Daniel of Ealing, in London, will shut for good on Sunday, after opening 124 years ago.

Prices have been slashed across homeware, fashion, toys, sportswear and shoes, with up to 50% off.

Shoppers finding out the iconic shop will close have shared their dismay online.

One posted saying: “Loved this shop and it’s top floor restaurant.”

While another added: “Ealing has lost its heart, soul and uniqueness!”

The Works

Stationer The Works is shutting its Margate store on Sunday, with shoppers’ next nearest branches in Westwood Cross Shopping Centre or Ramsgate Garden Centre.

A spokesperson for the chain said the decision to shut the branch had been made “as part of ongoing plans to optimise our store portfolio”.

The move has been met with sadness by shoppers, with one online stating: “No I love The Works.”

Another dejectedly added: “Be nothing left in the town soon.”

Emporium Worthing

Independent bar and shop Emporium Worthing is closing to the public on Sunday “with a heavy heart”.

The owners posted a lengthy statement on Facebook announcing the closure.

It said: “We share the challenging decision to close Emporium Worthing after five memorable years of serving you.

“This has been a tough choice for us, but after careful reflection, we believe it is the best path forward and the right choice for us at this time.”

A huge closing down sale has been launched to clear stock, even including fixtures and fittings from inside.

It’s not all bad news though as the Emporium will be moving online and selling hardwares.

New Look

New Look is closing its branch in the Northfield Shopping Centre, Birmingham, on June 8.

A picture recently posted on Facebook of the shop window advertised the closure and signposted customers to the retailer’s website.

Customers finding out about the closure have been left gutted.

One posted on Facebook: “Will soon be a ghost town, absolutely nothing left.”

Another commented: “Online (retail) is killing shops.”

A New Look spokesperson said: “We would like to thank all of our colleagues and the local community for their support over the years.

“We hope customers continue to shop with us online at newlook.com, where our full product ranges can be found.”

  • Ryanair also charges passengers up to £55 check-in at the airport
  • Anyone who loses their card at the airport will have to pay a £20 reissue fee
  • Book to sit in the front five rows if you want to head off the plane first
  • Extra legroom seats can be found in rows 1 A, B, C or 2 D, E, F as well as row 16 and 17 near the emergency exit
  • The worst seat on Ryanair’s Boeing 737-800 aircraft is also 11A because of its lack of window.

Sainsbury’s is testing a huge change to shelf labels – and shoppers will be divided

SAINSBURY’S is the latest supermarket to test a major change to shelf labels in stores – but it will leave shoppers divided.

One of the UK’s biggest supermarkets is trialling electronic shelf labels in a small number of branches.

The retailer installed the tech at three of its larger shops late last year and has been trying it out across different sections including alcohol, health and general merchandise.

Sainsbury’s has partnered with Harrison Retail to build the shelf fixings featuring the labels.

A branch in Witney, Oxfordshire, is understood to be one of the three locations where the tech is being trialled.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s said: “We are trialling electronic shelf-edge labels in a small number of our stores.”

Sainsbury’s shoppers are bound to be left divided over the new electronic tags though.

Fears have been raised digital labels could lead to “surge pricing”, which sees prices hiked when products are more in demand.

The labels can make it harder for shoppers to spot cut-price items too, as they’re not as visible as the paper yellow, orange or red stickers.

Sainsbury’s joins a host of other supermarkets trialling electronic shelf labels in stores.

Co-op is replacing paper product tags with electronic labels throughout its whole estate over the coming months.

The retailer said last month it had already made the change in 340 branches but would roll out the tags more widely.

It said 1,500 stores will have the labels by the end of this year and rolled out across all its nearly 2,400 shops by the end of 2026.

Lidl also said it would roll out the digital labels across all its stores before the end of 2024.

This came after a successful trial at 35 branches.

Asda is testing the digital labels at a Manchester shop.

WHAT ARE ELECTRONIC PRICE LABELS

Electronic pricing labels are not easy to spot and look almost identical to the traditional paper labels which have existed in stores for centuries.

They feature everything a shopper would expect to see on a label such as cost, weight and unit price.

The only difference is that the information is displayed on screens instead of a paper label.

Usually, they are connected to a wireless network that allows for prices to be updated in real-time – instead of it being done manually by a store clerk.

Supermarkets say the technology will help cut down on waste and help with efficiency in stores.

OTHER SAINSBURY’S NEWS

Sainsbury’s exclusively revealed to The Sun last month it had closed all remaining patisserie, hot food and pizza counters.

It is not clear when the pizza counters shut while is understood the patisserie and hot food counters closed in April.

The closures come as part of a wide-ranging update of Sainsbury’s’ store estate which also saw 61 in-store cafes shut on April 11.

The cafe spaces are being replaced with restaurants run by franchises such as Starbucks and Gourmet Burger Kitchen.

The supermarket said its hybrid cafe and food halls were becoming popular among shoppers.

Sainsbury’s first announced the store overhaul in January, as it revealed 3,000 head office staff would also lose their jobs in a senior team shake-up.

At the time, chief executive Simon Roberts said the changes would “ensure we continue to drive forward our momentum”.

It comes as the ongoing chaos has left scores of M&S shoppers unable to use their gift vouchers.

Yet the retail giant initially told customers they won’t get extensions of the expiry dates on vouchers due to expire.

One customer took to X, pleading: “My vouchers expire at the end of this month but I can’t use them. Can I have them extended?”

But M&S responded: “Unfortunately we’re unable to extend vouchers.”

They later appeared to soften, agreeing to “double check” on the customers behalf.

Last month, shoppers also said they’d hit a brick wall.

One couple revealed on the MoneySavingExpert forum that they’ve been saving up vouchers from their M&S credit card for months, only to be told they’d have to use them now or lose them entirely.

The customer posted: “We contacted M&S Customer Support which bluntly said that if we didn’t use the vouchers by their expiry date then that was tough.

“The only option we have is to spend them on something we don’t really need.”

They added that M&S stores aren’t even able to place orders, meaning customers can’t just pop in and buy bigger items either.

Even staff are reportedly unable to order stock, with fears some branches could start running out of essentials altogether.

Some stores have even been stripped of staples like bananas and Colin the Caterpillar cakes, and popular meal deals were pulled in smaller branches

An MSE forum ambassador said: “Given the number of people this may affect, perhaps thousands as you suggest, I would expect M&S to extend the end date for these.”

While another shopper fumed: “The least they could do is extend the date.”

M&S credit card reward vouchers are valid for 17 months, while shoppers with gift cards have 24 months from the last transaction to spend them.

When The Sun contacted M&S, it advised affected customers to get in touch – but didn’t confirm whether it would offer extensions on a case-by-case basis after all.

A M&S spokesperson said: “The majority of M&S credit card customers redeem their reward vouchers in stores, and they can continue to do so.

“If for any reason customers aren’t able to redeem in store, and their vouchers are due to expire soon, we would ask them to get in touch with us so we can support them.”

Meanwhile, the attack is still causing carnage across the business.

M&S was forced to pull online orders, birthday perks were suspended, and Sparks offers were frozen.

The store has now confirmed that some freebies, like birthday cookies, will still be honoured eventually.

But when it comes to Rewards Vouchers — a perk many customers save up to use for larger purchases — the answer so far is a hard no.

The cyber attack, which kicked off over Easter weekend, has been one of the worst to hit the high street in years.

It has forced M&S to halt online orders and triggered widespread disruption, including a £300million blow to profits.

Customer info was also nicked during the breach, with security experts now blaming “Scattered Spider”— a notorious cyber gang thought to be behind the chaos.

Online shopping is still out of action and is expected to remain patchy until at least July, with fashion, home and beauty sales taking a battering.

  • Saturday, April 19: Initial reports emerge on social media of problems with contactless payments and click-and-collect services at M&S stores across the UK. Customers experience difficulties collecting online purchases and returning items due to system issues.
  • Monday, April 21: Problems with contactless payments and click-and-collect persist. M&S officially acknowledges the “cyber incident” in a statement to the London Stock Exchange. CEO Stuart Machin apologises for the disruption and confirms “minor, temporary changes” to store operations. M&S notifies the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) and engages external cybersecurity experts.
  • Tuesday, April 22: Disruptions continue. M&S takes further systems offline as part of “proactive management”.
  • Wednesday, April 23: Despite earlier claims of customer-facing systems returning to normal, M&S continues to adjust operations to maintain security. Contactless payments are initially restored, but other services, including click-and-collect, remain affected.
  • Thursday, April 24: Contactless payments and click-and-collect services are still unavailable. Reports surface suggesting the attackers possibly gained access to data in February.

  • Tuesday, April 29: Information suggests that the hacker group Scattered Spider is likely behind the attack. Shoppers spot empty shelves in selected stores.
  • Tuesday, May 13: M&S revealed that some customer information has been stolen.
  • Wednesday, May 21: The retailer said disruption from the attack is expected to continue through to July.

Meanwhile, M&S isn’t the only store facing cyber trouble.

Co-op was forced to shut down part of its IT system after facing a hacking attempt last month.

It confirmed that it had “taken proactive steps to keep our systems safe”.

It was later revealed that the personal data of a “significant number” of its 6.2million customers and former members had been stolen.

The details included names, contact information, and dates of birth.

However, the retailer assured customers that passwords, credit card details, and transaction information were not compromised.

Full services resumed on May 14, following the reactivation of its online ordering system.

Shoppers will be able to land massive deals in its closing sale

Whittakers Jewellers, which has been a staple of Yarm High Street for 21 years, has confirmed its final day of trading will be Saturday, May 31.

The long-running store first announced its closure back in November, sparking sadness among loyal locals.

Since then, big bold signs have filled the shop windows, shouting about the store’s closing down sale with jewellery fans flocking in for a final bargain.

But now, with the countdown officially on, fresh signs have gone up confirming its last day is just days away.

The store have slashed jewellery prices from as much as 70% off.

The store posted one hot deal to its Facebook, where a diamond ring was slashed from £7,350 to £2,190.

The deal meant shoppers would save a massive £5,000.

The family-run store has thanked customers for their loyalty over the years in a heartfelt Facebook message.

It said: “We are sad we are leaving but we have treasured the 21 years we’ve been here on the High Street.

“We think of our customers as family and friends… we will miss you all.”

Whittakers have built up a massively loyal customer base and is located between the Lucy Pittaway art store and The Keys pub.

Four members of the Evans family have run the business since March 2004.

Bosses of the jewellers told Teesside Live they had expanded over the years – and even opened the first Pandora shop in the country.

But they added they always looked to maintain a “genuine, homey feel”.

Fans of the jewellers say it will leave a huge hole in the town, with one heartbroken shopper writing: “It’ll be such a big loss to the high street and to me.

“I’ve had the pleasure of purchasing so many lovely items over the years”

Another added: “Big loss to Yarm High Street.”

While a third said: “Thank you for your beautiful jewellery and fabulous staff. You will all be greatly missed”

Popular retailer to RETURN 13 years after collapsing into administration and shutting 236 stores

It’s not the only jewellery giant feeling the pinch.

G Hewitt & Son, a 154-year-old jewellers, and one of the UK’s first Rolex retailers, launched a once-in-a-lifetime closing down sale last month.

The shop told followers on Facebook: “Everything must go – don’t miss out on huge savings.”

Meanwhile, The Watches of Switzerland Group – based in Leicestershire – has confirmed it will close 16 showrooms across the country and that 40 people were expected to leave the business.

Similarly, Terence Lett Jewellers, located on the high street in Witney, Oxfordshire, has announced its decision to shut up shop.

And loyal customers of Jane Allen Jewellers in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales were left distraught to hear the update and have been mourning the imminent loss.

With more and more historic jewellers disappearing from high streets, Whittakers’ final goodbye will be bittersweet for shoppers in Yarm.

Locals now have just days left to bag a bargain and say farewell to one of the town’s best-loved shops.

RETAIL SECTOR STRUGGLES

Its not just jewellery stores that are suffering to stay open.

The retail industry has faced multiple closures this year, with ocncerns over the British high streets becoming ‘ghost towns’.

It’s worth bearing in mind, larger retail chains often open and close branches based on customer demand and sales.

Sometimes a single store might shut because a lease is ending and the chain has decided it is better to direct cash into other shops or opening new ones.

However, the retail sector more broadly has struggled since the 2008 financial crash.

The Centre for Retail Research has said the industry has been going through a “permacrisis” during this period.

There are a number of reasons the sector is struggling, one being the rise of online shopping.

This has seen footfall to high street stores fall seeing large swathes of branches close across the UK.

Challenging economic conditions in recent years, including soaring inflation, have dented shoppers’ wallets and purses too.

While some bigger retailers have struggled to stay afloat, including Wilko, in recent years independent shops have suffered the most.

The Centre for Retail Research said more than 13,000 high street shops closed in 2024, with over 11,000 of these independents.

RETAIL PAIN IN 2025

The British Retail Consortium has predicted that the Treasury’s hike to employer NICs will cost the retail sector £2.3billion.

Research by the British Chambers of Commerce shows that more than half of companies plan to raise prices by early April.

A survey of more than 4,800 firms found that 55% expect prices to increase in the next three months, up from 39% in a similar poll conducted in the latter half of 2024.

Three-quarters of companies cited the cost of employing people as their primary financial pressure.

The Centre for Retail Research (CRR) has also warned that around 17,350 retail sites are expected to shut down this year.

It comes on the back of a tough 2024 when 13,000 shops closed their doors for good, already a 28% increase on the previous year.

Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the CRR said: “The results for 2024 show that although the outcomes for store closures overall were not as poor as in either 2020 or 2022, they are still disconcerting, with worse set to come in 2025.”

Professor Bamfield has also warned of a bleak outlook for 2025, predicting that as many as 202,000 jobs could be lost in the sector.

“By increasing both the costs of running stores and the costs on each consumer’s household it is highly likely that we will see retail job losses eclipse the height of the pandemic in 2020.”

“It looks great, very substantial and you can’t argue with the price.

“But the filling was bland and sloppy.

“It was lacking meaty flavour and the chunky texture you’d expect.

“Although there was 17 per cent beef, it was potato heavy and the carrots and swede inside were a bit mulchy.

“Very high in fat and calorific too.”

How to save money on your supermarket shop

THERE are plenty of ways to save on your grocery shop.

You can look out for yellow or red stickers on products, which show when they’ve been reduced.

If the food is fresh, you’ll have to eat it quickly or freeze it for another time.

Making a list should also save you money, as you’ll be less likely to make any rash purchases when you get to the supermarket.

Going own brand can be one easy way to save hundreds of pounds a year on your food bills too.

This means ditching “finest” or “luxury” products and instead going for “own” or value” type of lines.

Plenty of supermarkets run wonky veg and fruit schemes where you can get cheap prices if they’re misshapen or imperfect.

For example, Lidl runs its Waste Not scheme, offering boxes of 5kg of fruit and vegetables for just £1.50.

If you’re on a low income and a parent, you may be able to get up to £442 a year in Healthy Start vouchers to use at the supermarket too.

Plus, many councils offer supermarket vouchers as part of the Household Support Fund.

“I enjoyed them immensely and loved the tiny size for a snack.

“Whilst they contained palm oil like many of the others, it was sustainable.

“However, for the price, I’d have liked them to be fuller.”

Lynsey says: “Lidl‘s pasty was hefty and one of the most appetising on offer.

“After 20 minutes in the oven, the pastry was really nice and flaky and the filling was hearty and flavoursome.

“The meat was tender and not chewy and there as no gristle.

“Surprisingly, it was more expensive for a single pasty than many others, but it was huge so I still felt for less than a £1 it was excellent value for money.

“You could easily make a meal out of this.”

LIDL has launched a range of Father’s Day bargains that will make perfect presents for those on a budget.

The discount supermarket is famous for offering great deals in its Middle Aisle.

The Father’s Day offers are no different as they start from just £1.99.

This latest drop of Middle Aisle buys will be available in stores from June 1 – but you’ll have to be quick as once they’re gone, they’re gone.

This year Father’s Day falls on Sunday, June 15.

Here are all the deals you can get…

Parkside Cordless Screwdriver Set – £14.99

At just £14.99, this is a great alternative to the Bosch version.

It’s 4V and it comes with four BBQ attachments: a BBQ blower, corkscrew, and salt and pepper mill.

For reference, the similar Bosch 3.6V 1 x 2 Li-ion Cordless Screwdriver IXO 7 costs £35 and doesn’t come with the accessories.

Lidl says the screwdriver set can be used around the house, in the kitchen and with your BBQ.

It has a USB-C charging port and a USB-C charging cable, although it doesn’t come with a mains adaptor.

For the dad who likes to keep well-groomed, you could pick up this trimmer kit.

The 9-in-1 kit can be used to style your hair, beard, ears, nose and more.

Lidl describes the trimmer as having “ultra-sharp blades for precise and effortless grooming”.

Its RRP is £67.49 on the Braun website but it’s selling on there currently for £44.99.

That means you can make a £10 saving by heading to Lidl and also save on delivery fees.

From May 20, Burger King will be firing up its kitchens with a raft of new additions.

This includes the all-new Kansas BBQ Chicken Fries, alongside returning favourites like the Bacon Caesar Gourmet Kings and the fiery Spicy Mayo range.

Topping the menu shake-up is the Kansas BBQ Chicken Fries — a sweet and smoky twist on the fan-favourite snack.

The new Kansas BBQ King Box, which includes a BBQ Chicken Stacker, four Kansas BBQ Chicken Fries, regular fries and a drink, will be hitting menus for £5.99.

Burger King is also bringing back its Gourmet Kings Bacon Caesar range — packed with posh ingredients and full-on flavour. 

The Spicy Mayo Double Whopper and Spicy Mayo Chicken Royale are also making a saucy return. 

Burger King fans can get BOGOF deals via the BK app too — with the Bacon Caesar burgers going two-for-one between May 20-22, and the Spicy Mayo range following suit from May 27-29.

And fans might remember Burger King gave its most iconic burger a major upgrade.

Back in March, Burger King marked the return of Whopper Day – handing out free Whoppers across the country on March 5.

COMING SOON: US Fast Food Chains Invade the UK!

But it wasn’t just the freebie that had burger lovers buzzing.

The chain confirmed that the Whopper had changed for the first time in years, with juicier beef, a fluffier glazed bun, and fresh-cut tomatoes and onions.

Katie Evans, Chief Marketing Officer at Burger King UK, said at the time: “We know our fans love the Whopper, so we’ve been listening… and making it taste better than ever.”

With new snacks, returning legends and even better burgers, fans will want to act fast — before these tasty deals and limited-edition bites are gone.

The food giant first launched the Gourmet King collection in June 2024.

Fans at the time flocked to Instagram to share their thought about the revamped menu.

One such person said: “Fantas look good.”

Another added: “Can’t wait to try them all.”

A third wrote: “Omg blue raspberry is my fav!!!”, while a fourth said: “All these look banging.”

Earlier this month, rivals McDonald’s launched its first-ever Breakfast Saver Menu.

The bargain meals launched in selected branches across the country with bites starting from as little as 79p.

What’s on McDonald’s Breakfast Saver Menu?

From May 7, McDonald’s customers in selected branches will be able to choose from a variety of bargain breakfasts:

Saver Bacon Roll – £2.19

Sausage Sandwich – £1.99

Cheesy Bacon Flatbread – £1.99

Hash Brown – £1.59

Apple Slices – 79p

Porridge – £1.69

Tropicana Apple or Orange juice – £1.89

Breakfast is served from 5am to 11am every day of the week, making it the perfect choice for those early starts.

The fast food is serving up favourites like the Cheesy Bacon Flatbread (£1.99), Saver Bacon Roll (£2.19), and porridge pots (£1.69).

The Breakfast Saver Menu was launched on May 7 across 332 UK restaurants in the North of the country for a short period of time.

The home of the Golden Arches also saw the return of the McSpicy X Frank’s RedHot  on the same day.

How to save money at Burger King

BK offers customers using its app almost 50% off on a range of burgers from Monday to Friday.

Any time between 2pm and 5pm, fans can nab a Whopper, Chicken Royale and Bacon Double Cheeseburger for £3.

Prices vary from branch to branch but you’ll most likely pay £5.99 for any of the three burgers normally.

That’s a saving of almost £3 using the hack.

YourBurgerKing members can get a free Whopper on their birthday.

With the cost of the burger £5.99 in most restaurants, that’s a decent saving as well.

YourBurgerKing is the fast food chain’s reward scheme. You receive 10 points for every £1 spent, as well as a host of other offers.

To sign up, you just have to visit Burger King’s website.

Anyone signed up to the YourBurgerKing scheme will also get 100 points straight away on their first order.

So you can claim your favourite burger and use the points to bag a free portion of fries completely free.

They can cost around £2.50, saving you a few pounds for little effort.
