Love Island villa erupts as Islander left ‘raging’ over ‘disrespect’ as row breaks out

The Love Island villa erupts tonight after the girls get to watch the boys unknowingly talk about them and date three new bombshells, with Helena stating she is ‘raging about the disrespect’

Love Island series 12 has already surprised islanders and viewers with twists and turns, including already dumping two islanders, but the villa is about to explode in a new teaser for the upcoming episode. After seeing three new bombshells enter the ‘boys night out’, the girls are fuming and it could be the last bump in the road for some couples.

The boys left the villa earlier in the day for drinks, but what they didn’t know was that the girls would be watching their every move on a giant TV back in the main villa. Shortly after they all established where they stood in their relationship, three new bombshells entered and caused a stir for the girls watching.

The three bombshells include 24-year-old teaching assistant Malisha from Broxbourne, Commercial Banking Executive Yasmin, 24, and Insurance Development Executive Emily, 24, from Aberdeen.

After the girls watched the other half of their couple flirt with the new bombshells, Helena was not best pleased and said: “My man basically saying I’m a massive red flag because of something I’ve done in the past and I’m a big party girl…?” Alima responds: “Double standards”. Helena continues and says, “I’m raging about the disrespect.”

But they don’t have long to debrief about the boys as suddenly their one-on-one dates start playing on the big screen and they rush back to secretly listen in to more chats.

Opening up to the new bombshell on what he is looking for, Harry said: “The main thing is ambition; someone that wants a family, I’m 30 and ready for it, I’ve got my s*** together.” Discussing Shakira, Harry adds: “Potentially there’s unfinished business, I think she knows that as well, it’s just not the right time. She has pride, she’s only 22, but she’s ahead of her years and has a lot of self-respect.”

Yasmin eagerly asks Harry, “Are you open to getting to know other people, or do you like what you’ve got with Helena?

The islanders then get a sneak peek into Conor’s date with bombshell Emily. Conor tells Emily: “Whatever I do, I wanna be respectful, I’m definitely going to get to know you…” Unknowing to Conor, this comment goes down well with the girls watching, with the other half of his couple, Toni, labelling him “My respectful king.”

Later, the boys and bombshells return to the Villa and spot the huge screen and quickly realise what’s been happening. The boys aren’t happy, to say the least, about the girls being a fly on the wall during their chats, as Dejon says, “boys chat stays in the boys chat!”

But it is too late for that as Helena has some beef with Harry about what he said during the boys chat, and Meg tells Dejon exactly how she’s feeling about watching his date, telling him: “You failed the test.”

Harry and Helena head to the terrace and she tells him: “I dunno where we go from here…I don’t know how we can move forward…” Meanwhile, Conor chats to Emily in the snug, as he tells her: “The vibe I’ve got, we’re on the same wavelength, everything you said – I want someone to look after me and listen to me – I feel like that’s me”.

Love Island in fakery row as fans claim conversation was ‘scripted’ between the boys

LOVE Island fans have hit out at the show for setting up a “scripted” scene between the boys on tonight’s show.

The lads headed off to enjoy an evening without the girls and the conversation quickly turned to their pairings.

But the girls weren’t entirely thrilled with what they heard.

Each of the lads took it in turns to discuss their relationship.

Connor said he was “enjoying” Toni’s company despite not being each other’s natural types.

Ben said it was a “long time coming” with Shakira, while Dejon said he “wasn’t expecting to find something so rare so quick” with Meg.

Tommy admitted he and Megan were strong – saying she “ticks every single box” and added: “I’m new to the relationship stuff, but I’m putting in the energy.”

But Harry was keen to stir up some trouble and asked if any of the lads had any worries.

Harry asked Ben if there was anything he should be concerned about when it comes to Shakira.

“With the Blu situation, her not being honest if she’s not feeling it. If it was me and I wasn’t feeling the girl. I made it known, I don’t feel like Shakira does that, she can give mixed signals,” Ben explained.

Tommy admitted all of the girls could have their heads turned.

Helena admits she had a threesome as Love Island stars discuss sex

While Harry said he had concerns when it came to Helena after her threesome confession.

But viewers were quick to claim that the conversation looked like a “set-up” and appeared to be “scripted”.

One wrote: “Well this isn’t scripted at all is it(!).”

A second said: “Ohh the producers doing something different but still scripted a bit cause if you’re told to sit down and discuss the girls you know it’s going to be shown back.”

A third commented: “This show is becoming more and more scripted. Their mannerisms are not natural.”

Another added: “Idk this part seems scripted.”

And the surprises didn’t stop there, as all of a sudden the boys are greeted by not one, not two, but THREE brand new bombshells.

Emily, Malisha and Yasmin crashed the boys’ night and wasted no time in getting to know the group.

Megan spotted the bombshells and shouted “There’s three of them!”

A stunned Meg added: “You’re joking!”

Harry asksed the new bombshells: “Are you coming back with us?”

Malisha said: “Of course I am!”

Yasmin added to the boys: “Tell us what your situation is in the Villa at the moment?”

They fill them in on their current situations and how they’re feeling, but as they’re blissfully unaware that their every move is being watched, they don’t hold back with their answers.

Four Weddings and a Funeral secrets from Hugh Grant row to Liz Hurley’s dress

It’s been over three decades since Four Weddings and a Funeral was released on the big screen, and the Richard Curtis rom-com still holds a special place in the hearts of audiences everywhere

For over thirty years, Four Weddings and a Funeral has shown that a film with a lot of heart can go a long way. Despite being one of the most beloved romantic comedies out there, and helping catapult some of its stars to new levels of fame, it was actually a really low-budget project.

It cost only £3 million to make – which might sound like a lot, but in Hollywood terms is as cheap as chips – and was shot over just six weeks.

But despite being a small movie, Four Weddings is still one of the British public’s favourite rom-coms after all these years, and it cemented Hugh Grant as a household name in the UK, along with his girlfriend Liz Hurley.

Her stunning and risque Versace dress – the barely-there piece was held together with safety pins – captured serious attention at the Four Weddings premiere, and has become an iconic moment in fashion history.

The movie’s producer, Duncan Kenworthy, remembered discussing what Liz might wear when going for lunch with her and Hugh the week before the premiere, “Liz said, ‘I have absolutely no idea at this point’,” he said, adding that “With every piece about Liz came a mention of the film, so it was great publicity. The premiere was an extraordinary event.”

After the film’s release on March 11, 1994, even the movie’s theme song – Love is All Around by Wet, Wet, Wet – found major success, and spent 15 weeks at the top of the charts.

Pretty much every character in the film has become totally beloved by audiences, from the floppy-haired Charles as lead, to his quirky flatmate Scarlet, and the laugh-a-minute, over-the-top Gareth.

Duncan, 73, has said that they were totally consumed by their “little film” during the two years production took and that due to issues finding finance for the film, “We were making it for a long time in our heads before we actually made it in reality”.

However, even though they were working on a budget, everyone around them really believed that Four Weddings would go the distance.

“I remember sitting and watching the Oscars on telly with friends the year before we made Four Weddings and they all said, ‘You’ll be there next year’ and laughed,” Duncan explained.

“Literally a year later, there I was, at the Oscars, with a Best Picture nomination. It was unthinkable, really. In those days there were only five nominees for best picture at the Oscars. It shows what a big impact the film made – not just with the public but within the film world, too.”

Despite its popularity, Four Weddings and a Funeral didn’t take home Best Picture, but to be fair, they faced some pretty stiff competition that year, with other nominees in 1995 including Pulp Fiction, The Shawshank Redemption, and Forrest Gump – with the latter taking home the statue.

Four Weddings did manage to score a host of BAFTAs, however, for its depiction of Hugh Grant as the slightly-hopeless Charles attending a series of landmark occasions in his loved one’s lives – and falling in love with American socialite, Carrie – played by Andie MacDowell.

Casting the film presented the production team with a few challenges, particularly when it came to the lead role of Charles. Whilst it might seem impossible to imagine anyone else playing him now, Richard Curtis is said to have had more than few doubts about his ability to carry the role.

Over 70 people were auditioned for the role, but in the end it came down to Hugh Grant and one other choice.

“It sounds odd now but the other actor in the frame was Alan Rickman, who’d really cut through in the Robin Hood movie. Mike, Richard and I simply couldn’t agree which of them to cast, so we voted in secret,” Duncan explained.

“We were an odd number, and it came out 2 to 1 in favour of Hugh Grant. It’s a cause of enormous delight to me that it was Richard who nearly ended Hugh’s romcom career before it even started.”

Hugh Grant has also revealed that Richard Curtis definitely was not a fan of him during the auditioning process, saying “[My audition] was in front of Mike Newell, the director, who seemed to quite like me, and Richard Curtis, who seemed to want me dead. He really hated me. Apparently there was a bit of a fight between them…. and Richard didn’t want me at all.”

The actor also revealed that before the movie’s release, he thought it would be a total flop, and he said as much to his friend Sam Neil over dinner one night. Later, Hugh said about his initial impression of the rom-com “I was clearly wrong and the film changed my life. It was the beginning of a happy friendship with Richard Curtis, and I’ve always had the greatest respect for Mike Newell who taught me things I use to this day.”

Despite the rocky start to Richard’s impression of Hugh, the pair went on to make two other iconic rom-coms together, Notting Hill and Love Actually, so the actor obviously convinced him eventually that he had it in him.

Finding someone to play Carrie also presented some challenges, Duncan explained, and after an extensive auditioning process in the US, they offered the role to two actresses – both of whom turned it down.

Back in the UK, they heard on the grapevine that established actress Andie MacDowell was in town, and quickly arranged a meeting, “We found out Andie MacDowell was staying at The Dorchester, so Mike and I arranged to meet her in the bar. As soon as we met her, Mike knew she was the one,” the producer said.

And it was Andie who would end up delivering probably the film’s most famous – and cheesy – line after Hugh Grant’s character declared his undying love for her as the pair stood in the pouring rain. “Is it still raining? I hadn’t noticed,” Carrie deadpans, a delivery that Duncan thinks in hindsight might have missed the mark.

Four weddings and a funeral

“Of course Carrie knows it’s raining! She’s drenched, he’s drenched. She means it ironically,” he explained. “If Andie had said it with a smile, no one would have mentioned it!”

Four Weddings and a Funeral is packed with laughs – and at the funeral of Gareth more than a few tears – and it’s popularity is such that it has even born a TV show. Created by Mindy Kaling, the show over ten episodes followed the framework of the film – but it didn’t resonate with the public in the same way the film had.

When it comes to the continued love for Four Weddings, and its longstanding legacy, Duncan said: “To think there’s still interest in the film, all these years later, is surprising but lovely.”

Donald Trump gets astonishing reaction at UFC 316 amid Elon Musk row before stunning gesture by winner Merab Dvalishvili

DONALD TRUMP has made a surprise appearance at UFC 316 – but this time Elon Musk was nowhere to be seen.

The President was cageside to watch Merab Dvalishvili’s title scrap with Sean O’Malley on Saturday night.

Trump was flanked by UFC kingpin Dana White in a one-man entourage as he entered the arena in Newark, New Jersey.

He received loud cheers from the capacity crowd at the Prudential Center before taking his seat close to boxing icon Mike Tyson.

Trump shook hands with former NFL stars Will Compton and Taylor Lewan as he settled in to watch a packed main card.

Son Eric, daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner were also in the audience, as well as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The 47th President arrived in New Jersey on Friday, where he stayed at his golf course in Bedminster.

Trump was on the end of a high five from Kevin Holland after his submission victory against fellow welterweight Vicente Luque.

And he later shared words of encouragement to Georgian star Dvalishvili following an epic end to the main event.

Trump’s appearance was also notable for the absence of former sidekick Elon Musk.

His relationship with the world’s richest man disintegrated earlier this week.

The former allies battled it out on social media after disagreeing on Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful Bill’, with the President claiming Elon had “gone crazy”.

I’m an ex-UFC champ who has quit masturbating and smoking weed to try win my belt back at UFC 316,

Musk, who is worth an estimated $330 billion, was a major contributor to Trump’s presidential campaign.

He reportedly spent $250 million in supporting the Republican’s race for the White House last year.

Musk accompanied Trump to his last UFC showing in April.

The President was given a thunderous reception as he entered the arena for UFC 314 in Miami, Florida.

But prior to Saturday’s action, Trump indicated his working relationship with Musk was irreparable.

“I’m too busy doing other things. I won an election in a landslide,” he said.

“I gave [Musk] a lot of breaks, long before this happened.

“I gave him breaks in my first administration, and saved his life in my first administration, I have no intention of speaking to him.”

Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s complicated relationship

Former president Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s relationship started rocky, but the pair have since reconciled, with Musk fully endorsing Trump and interviewing him on X Spaces on August 12.

In 2022, Elon Musk and Donald Trump publicly feuded on X, then still known as Twitter.

Trump called Musk a liar and “bulls**t artist” during a rally in Alaska.

“Elon is not going to buy Twitter,” Trump said at the time.

“You know, he said the other day, ‘I’ve never voted for a Republican.’ I said, ‘I didn’t know that – you told me you voted for me. So he’s another bulls**t artist, but he’s not going to be buying it.”

In response to Trump’s critiques, the SpaceX founder clapped back.

“I don’t hate the man, but it’s time for Trump to hang up his hat & sail into the sunset,” Musk posted.

Musk also went on to buy X months later.

The X owner said he had previously voted mostly for Democrats since becoming a United States citizen in 2002.

Musk initially backed Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to be the Republican Party’s presidential nominee.

“My preference for the 2024 presidency is someone sensible and centrist,” Musk wrote on X in 2022.

“I had hoped that would [be] the case for the Biden administration, but have been disappointed so far.”

His shift in political parties might be attributed to his plummeting relationship with President Joe Biden who didn’t invite Musk to the 2021 White House electric vehicle summit.

Despite their past issues, Trump and Musk’s relationship took a turn in March after they met at Mar-a-Lago.

Trump was also previously against electric vehicles but has since changed his stance.

“I’m for electric cars,” he said at a rally earlier this month.

“I have to be, because Elon endorsed me very strongly. So I have no choice.”

Following the assassination attempt at Trump’s rally in July, Musk announced his support for the former president.

“I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery,” Musk wrote on X after the shooting.

During a recent press conference, Trump spoke highly of Musk.

“I respect Elon a lot. He respects me,” he said.

“Elon, more than almost anybody I know, he loves this country. He loves the concept of this country, but like me, he says this country is in big trouble, it’s in tremendous danger.”

Musk has been pictured at events at Mar-a-Lago and the UFC, buddying up with Trump.

Trump selected Musk to lead the Department of Government Efficiency – a taskforce aimed at cutting bureaucracy.

In the Octagon, it was a night to remember for Dvalishvili, who proved too strong for O’Malley in their main event rematch.

The reigning bantamweight champion secured his first-ever UFC submission following a brutal choke-out.

And he celebrated by vaulting out of the Octagon for a handshake and words with Trump.

The President also shook hands with a devastated O’Malley, who was able to leave the Octagon under his own steam after the choke.

“He was well trained, he was well prepared, and I knew that he was going to make changes,” Dvalishvili told reporters after the third round win.

“Every time I lost I made big changes and I learned from it.

“But I’m getting better and better. I wasn’t showing this technique [before] and I have more tools in my pocket I’m still working on, and then little by little I will show.

“Now it’s my time.”

Elsewhere on the main card, there were also wins for Kayla Harrison, Joe Pyfer, Holland, and Mario Bautista.

Trump and Musk trade insults as row explodes in public view

The rift between US President Donald Trump and his former adviser Elon Musk has erupted into the open, with each trading insults after the tech billionaire criticised one of Trump’s key domestic policies.

The two billionaires escalated the feud throughout Thursday, lobbing barbs at each other on the social media sites they each own, suggesting a bitter conclusion to their unlikely alliance.

The day began with Trump saying he was “disappointed” with Musk’s criticisms of his administration’s centrepiece tax and spending bill, musing that it may be the end of their “great relationship”.

Musk then accused Trump of “ingratitude”, adding: “Without me, Trump would have lost the election”.

After hours of sparring, Trump appeared to downplay the situation. “Oh it’s okay,” he told news site Politico. “It’s going very well, never done better.” His aides have scheduled a phone call with Musk for Friday, the same news site reported.

Musk also appeared to believe there was a need to patch things up. Late on Thursday, in response to post by Bill Ackman, a prominent Trump backer, which suggested the pair needed to make peace, he wrote: “You’re not wrong”

The breaking point in the relationship between the president and his one-time ally came after weeks of Musk lobbying against Trump’s “big, beautiful” spending bill, which was passed by the US House last month and is awaiting a vote in the Senate.

Shortly after leaving the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) after 129 days in the job, Musk took to his site X to call the bill a “disgusting abomination” and posting: “Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong.”

He argued that the bill will irresponsibly add to the US national debt, and encouraged his followers to phone their representatives to express opposition to the spending plan.

Speaking to reporters during a news conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Thursday, Trump defending the bill and said: “I’m very disappointed because Elon knew the inner workings of this bill better than almost anybody sitting here. All of a sudden he had a problem.”

He went on to suggest that Musk was upset about the removal of subsidies and mandates for electric vehicles, which could affect his Tesla business.

Musk denied this was the case and wrote: “Keep the EV/solar incentive cuts in the bill, even though no oil & gas subsidies are touched (very unfair!!), but ditch the MOUNTAIN of DISGUSTING PORK in the bill.”

“Pork” is a term used in US politics to describe wasteful government spending, particularly on things meant to curry favour with particular groups or local areas.

The partnership between the two men began when Musk endorsed Trump last July after an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania. The Tesla boss reportedly funnelled $290m (£213m) into getting him back into the White House.

Amid a flurry of posts on X after Thursday’s news conference, Musk took credit for the sweeping Republican victory in last November’s election, writing: “Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate.”

“Such ingratitude,” he added.

Musk went on to post a poll, asking his followers: “Is it time to create a new political party in America that actually represents the 80% in the middle?”

Over the course of the day, Musk went on to repost a tweet calling for Trump to resign, argue that his global tariff plan will trigger a US recession, and to suggest without evidence that Trump appears in unreleased files related to late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Epstein was arrested in July 2019 on charges of sex trafficking and died by suicide while awaiting trial. Trump was president at the time. He said he knew Epstein “like everybody in Palm Beach knew him” but had a “falling out with him a long time ago”.

The White House condemned Musk’s allegation, with press secretary Karoline Leavitt saying in a statement: “This is an unfortunate episode from Elon, who is unhappy with the One Big Beautiful Bill because it does not include the policies he wanted.”

On his Truth Social network, Trump claimed that Musk “just went CRAZY” and went on to post: “The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts. I was always surprised that Biden didn’t do it!”

Musk’s companies, including Tesla, SpaceX and Starlink have direct contacts with the US government and, like many other businesses, also benefit from subsidies and tax breaks.

In response, Musk said SpaceX “will begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft immediately”. The craft is used to shuttle people and supplies to the International Space Station.

However, he later he appeared to back down from that threat, saying in response to a post on X urging him to cool off: “Ok, we won’t decommission Dragon.”

Telsa stock dropped by 14% within hours of the row bursting out into public.

According to the most recent analysis from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, the spending bill working its way through Congress will increase the US national debt by $2.4tn over 10 years and leave nearly 11 million people without government-backed health insurance.

The White House disputes those figures, saying they don’t account for revenues brought in by increased tariffs.

Put in charge of radically slashing government spending at Doge, Musk initiated mass sackings and wholesale elimination of departments such as the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

Doge claims to have saved $180bn, although that number has been disputed, and is well short of Musk’s initial aim to cut spending by up to $2tn.

Chairman of far-right Reform UK party quits after burqa row | Politics News

Zia Yusuf, a self-described ‘British Muslim patriot’, leaves a party accused of fuelling Islamophobia after 11 months.

The Muslim chairman of the United Kingdom’s radical right-wing Reform UK party has quit after denouncing a call from within party ranks to ban the burqa as “dumb”.

“I no longer believe working to get a Reform government elected is a good use of my time, and hereby resign the office,” Zia Yusuf announced on X on Thursday, hours after hitting out at Reform UK lawmaker Sarah Pochin for asking Prime Minister Keir Starmer whether his government would consider banning the burqa.

Pochin won her seat in a by-election last month that saw the anti-immigration party, some of whose members have been accused of Islamophobia, make significant gains in a political landscape traditionally dominated by the governing Labour Party and the opposition Conservatives.

The new lawmaker had urged Labour’s Starmer during her debut appearance at Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday if he would consider the move “in the interests of public safety”, according to the BBC.

“I do think it’s dumb for a party to ask the PM if they would do something the party itself wouldn’t do,” Yusuf said on X amid an ensuing flare-up over whether banning the burqa should be party policy.

Yusuf, a former banker and self-described “proud British Muslim patriot”, became Reform UK chairman after last year’s general election, having jumped ship from the Conservative Party.

Reform UK, led by Brexit campaigner Nigel Farage, won four parliamentary seats in a breakthrough result last year, going on to gain a fifth parliamentary seat, its first mayoralty and a number of council seats in local elections last month.

It currently leads national opinion polls, ahead of the Labour Party.

Farage said on X that Yusuf was “a huge factor in our success on May 1st and is an enormously talented person”.

Divisions in the party’s upper ranks have been made public before.

In March, Reform referred one of its lawmakers, Rupert Lowe, to police over a number of allegations, including threats of physical violence against Yusuf.

Prosecutors later said they would not bring charges against Lowe, who was suspended by the party.

Japanese seafood set to return to China after Fukushima wastewater row | Fukushima News

Tokyo and Beijing are closing in on a deal to allow Japanese seafood exports to resume following 2023 ban.

China and Japan are closing in on a deal that would see the return of Japanese seafood imports to the Chinese market following a nearly two-year trade ban.

Tokyo said on Friday that the two sides are finalising details following a successful meeting in Beijing this week.

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi told reporters that officials had “reached an agreement on the technical requirements necessary to resume exports of fishery products to China”.

“Exports to China will resume as soon as the re-registration process for export-related facilities is completed,” Hayashi said, hailing the pending deal as a “milestone.”

China banned Japanese seafood imports in August 2023 after Japan released more than 1 million metric tonnes of treated radioactive wastewater from the former Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The power plant was destroyed during Japan’s infamous 2011 earthquake and tsunami, when three of its six nuclear reactors collapsed.

While the safety of the wastewater release was backed by the International Atomic Energy Agency, the move was controversial with neighbours like China.

China’s General Administration of Customs said on Friday that exports will resume once the “necessary procedures” are completed after “substantial progress” was made during negotiations.

The deal lays out several new procedures for Japan, whose fish processing facilities will be required to register with China.

Exporters will also need to include certificates of inspection guaranteeing that seafood has been checked for radioactive material, according to Japanese officials.

Chinese restrictions will remain on agricultural and marine exports from 10 Japanese prefectures due to concerns dating back to the 2011 accident.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa said Tokyo would continue to push China to lift any remaining restrictions.

How Lucy Connolly’s racist tweet sparked a free speech row

Lucy Connolly called for hotels housing asylum seekers to be set on fire and wrote “if that makes me racist, so be it”

Lucy Connolly’s 51-word online post in the wake of the Southport killings led her to jail and into the centre of a row over free speech.

For some, the 31-month jail term imposed for inciting race hate was “tyrannical”, while one commentator said Connolly was a “hostage of the British state”, and another that she was “clearly a political prisoner”.

Court of Appeal judges, however, this week refused to reduce her sentence.

Asked about her case in Parliament, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said sentencing was “a matter for the courts” and that while he was “strongly in favour of free speech”, he was “equally against incitement to violence”.

Rupert Lowe, the independent MP for Great Yarmouth, said the situation was “morally repugnant” and added: “This is not the Britain I want to live in.”

Others said her supporters wanted a “right to be racist”.

In July last year, prompted by a false rumour that an illegal immigrant was responsible for the murder of three girls at a dance workshop in Southport, Connolly posted online calling for “mass deportation now”, adding “set fire to all the… hotels [housing asylum seekers]… for all I care”.

Connolly, then a 41-year-old Northampton childminder, added: “If that makes me racist, so be it.”

At the time she had about 9,000 followers on X. Her message was reposted 940 times and viewed 310,000 times, before she deleted it three and a half hours later.

In October she was jailed after admitting inciting racial hatred.

Three appeal court judges this week ruled the 31-month sentence was not “manifestly excessive”.

Stephen O’Grady, a legal officer with the Free Speech Union (FSU), said the sentence seemed “rather steep in proportion to the offence”.

His organisation has worked with Connolly’s family since November and funded her appeal.

Mr O’Grady said Connolly “wasn’t some lager-fuelled hooligan on the streets” and pointed to her being a mother of a 12-year-old daughter, who had also lost a son when he was just 19 months old.

He said there was a “difference between howling racist abuse at somebody in the street and throwing bricks at the police” and “sending tweets, which were perhaps regrettable but wouldn’t have the same immediate effect”.

Stephen O’Grady said Connolly’s case demonstrated “police overreach”

Connolly’s case was also “emblematic of wider concerns” about “increasing police interest in people’s online activity”, Mr O’Grady said.

The FSU had received “a slew of queries” from people who were “very unsure” about “the limits of what they can they can say online”, he said, and who feared “the police are going to come knocking on the door”.

“There’s an immense amount of police overreach,” he added.

He cited the example of a retired special constable detained after challenging a pro-Palestine supporter online, a case the FSU took on.

Responding to Mr O’Grady’s claim, a National Police Chiefs’ Council spokesperson said that Article 10 of the Human Rights Act “protects a person’s right to hold opinions and to express them freely” and that officers received training about the act.

They added: “It remains imperative that officers and staff continue to receive training commensurate with the demands placed upon them.”

Raymond Connolly said the Court of Appeal had shown his wife “no mercy”

After the appeal was dismissed, Connolly’s husband, Conservative town councillor Raymond Connolly, said she was “a good person and not a racist” and had “paid a very high price for making a mistake”.

Her local Labour MP, Northampton South’s Mike Reader, said he had “big sympathy” for Connolly and her daughter, but there was no justification for accusing the police of “overreach”.

He said: “I want the police to protect us online and I want the police to protect us on the streets and they should be doing it equally.”

It was a “fallacy” and “misunderstanding of the world” if people did not “believe that the online space is as dangerous for people as the streets,” he added.

“We’re all attached to our phones; we’re all influenced by what we see, and I think it’s right that the police took action here.”

Connolly had pleaded guilty but argued at appeal she had not intended to incite serious violence

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Melbourne Inman said Connolly’s offence was “category A” – meaning “high culpability” – and that both the prosecution and her own barrister agreed she “intended to incite serious violence”.

For Reader, this showed “they weren’t arguing this was a silly tweet and she should be let off – her own counsel agreed this was a serious issue”.

At her appeal, Connolly claimed that while she accepted she intended to stir up racial hatred, she always denied trying to incite violence.

But Lord Justice Holroyde said in a judgement this week the evidence “clearly shows that she was well aware of what she was admitting”.

Sentencing guidelines for the offence indicate a starting point of three years’ custody.

While the prosecution argued the offence was aggravated by its timing, “particularly sensitive social climate”, the defence argued the tweet had been posted before any violence had started, and that Connolly had “subsequently attempted to stop the violence after it had erupted”.

The judgement also highlighted other online posts from Connolly that the judges said indicated her “view about illegal immigrants”.

Four days before the Southport murders, she responded to a video shared by far-right activist Tommy Robinson showing a black man being tackled to the ground for allegedly performing a sex act in public.

Connolly posted: “Somalian, I guess. Loads of them,” followed by a vomiting emoji.

On 3 August, responding to an anti-racism protest in Manchester, she wrote: “I take it they will all be in line to sign up to house an illegal boat invader then. Oh sorry, refugee.

“Maybe sign a waiver to say they don’t mind if it’s one of their family that gets attacked, butchered, raped etc, by unvetted criminals.”

The FSU said she was likely to be eligible for release from August, after serving 40% of her sentence.

Some, including Mr O’Grady, argued her jail term was longer than punishments handed to criminals perceived to have committed “far worse” crimes.

Reform UK’s Mark Arnull, the leader of West Northamptonshire Council, said it was not for him “to pass comment on sentences or indeed discuss individual cases”.

But he added: “It’s relatively easy to understand why constituents in West Northamptonshire question the proportionality of Lucy’s sentence when they see offenders in other high-profile and serious cases walk free and avoid jail.”

Shola Mos-Shogbamimu believed Connolly’s supporters wanted a “right to be racist”

The issue for writer and activist Shola Mos-Shogbamimu was that “those who have committed worse crimes” should “spend more time in jail, not less time for Lucy Connolly”.

Dr Mos-Shogbamimu added: “It’s not ‘freedom of speech without accountability’. She didn’t tweet something that hurt someone’s feelings; she tweeted saying someone should die.”

In her view, those making Connolly a “flag-bearer or champion” for free speech were asking for “the right to be racist”.

Free speech advocate Mr O’Grady said “no-one is arguing for an unfettered ‘right’ to incite racial hatred”.

Connolly’s case was about “proportionality”, he added, and “the sense that online speech is increasingly being punished very harshly compared to other offending… such as in-person violent disorder”.

UK seaside town abandoned by theme park and row over £65m holiday park boost

Bold plans to transform a derelict theme park into an impressive £65 million holiday park – with more than 270 lodges and two hotels – remain in the air, despite being submitted to the council in 2022

The future of a rotting theme park once revered by Brits remains in the air – despite multi-million upgrade plans being submitted to the council three years ago.

Back in its glory days, Cleethorpe’s Pleasure Island epitomised the very best of the UK coast – attracting thousands of holidaymakers nationwide. Boasting almost 30 adrenaline-pumping rides, including the Hyperblaster, Obliterator, Pendulus, and Terror Rack – the attraction put Cleethorpes, a tiny seaside town on the estuary of the Humber in North East Lincolnshire, on the map. But, as cheap holiday packages to sunny destinations like Spain started gaining popularity – Pleasure Island’s visitor numbers drastically slumped.

In 2016, the theme park closed its doors for good. But, instead of being re-purposed or attempting to re-open, the attraction was simply left to decay. Now, creepy images show how much of the park has been neglected for so long much of it has been reclaimed by nature. Pictures released last year also reveal piles of rubbish that remains inside some of the park’s buildings.

The arched entrance to Pleasure Island still reads ‘WELCOME’ – but ugly metal fencing has blocked tourists from the site for almost a decade. It sparks one big question shrouded in mystery: what is happening to this place?

Back in 2022, a consortium of developers including Lidl submitted ambitious plans to transform the abandoned park into a huge holiday resort consisting of more than 270 lodges, two hotels, a drive-through coffee-shop and cycle-hire building. Expected to cost around £65 million, the proposal also includes restaurants, cafes, a leisure unit, two retail units, and the use of the existing lake for fishing activities.

According to reports at the time, all existing Pleasure Island buildings and structures would be knocked down, marking a fresh start for the space. An impact assessment estimates the regeneration could create around £17 million per year of additional visitor expenditure once it’s operational.

The plans have been hit with several objections(Image: BBC)

However, the bold plans have been in a back-and-forth following a series of concerns. The Environment Agency first objected to plans based on worries about the risk of flooding. However, after agreeing to close the lodges between November and March – when flooding risk is at its highest – the EA was ‘satisfied’ with the amendments.

It later objecting to amendments to the plans, which include building a new bridge over the Buck Beck. “We will require continuous access along both banks of the watercourse and as a minimum, the bridge should not reduce the cross-sectional area of the channel,” the body said. “Further details are required to determine whether these requirements have been met.”

The council says the planning application is still pending consideration(Image: BBC)

Other concerns were raised in 2023, when Natural England asked for more information about the development due to ‘potential significant effects’ on the Humber Estuary. However, since September last year – there have been no new news reports on the Pleasure Island’s future. On its website, North East Lincolnshire Council states the proposal is ‘pending consideration’ – but it has been like this since September 2024.

The latest update to the council’s planning documents is a Consultee Comment from Natural England, dated March 18. This is in response to concerns around recreational disturbance – which shows the future of Pleasure Island remains unknown.

Ten acts have made it through to the highly-anticipated final show of Britain’s Got Talent.

For the first time, all of the performers will face the public vote after a number of Golden Buzzers sent contestants straight through.

The Blackouts, Olly Pearson, Jasmine Rice, Joseph Charm, and magician Harry Moulding were the acts to receive the five golden buzzers.

The acts who won each of the semi-final shows were Vinnie McKee, Stacey Leadbeatter, Ping Pong Pang and Hear Our Voice.

Eight-year-old singer Binita Chetry was the last artist announced to win the public vote.

This comes as the long-running variety competition was engulfed with controversy over the ‘biggest set up ever.

Harry Moulding claimed that he was “going to create a special moment of real magic for one person” at the start of his act.

The performance was full of incredible tricks which involved pop star references and predictions before the live show.

One contributor – who was also named Harry – appeared in a pre-recorded VT that was filmed in Paris.

His girlfriend Jess was sat in the audience and she was ‘randomly’ chosen by the magician to come onto the stage.

At the end of the clip, Harry miraculously appeared in front of Simon Cowell, Alesha Dixon, Bruno Tonioli, Amanda Holden and KSI.

He got down on one knee and popped the question to his partner, who tearfully accepted.

After KSI chose to send the act straight through to the final with his Golden Buzzer, droves of viewers took to social media as they claimed the show was ‘rigged’.

Writing on X – formerly known as Twitter – one fan fumed: “Cowell said this boring idiot is the frontrunner – so if he wins (despite everyone watching losing the will to live) you’ll know that this trashy, s***** programme is fixed.”

A second claimed: “That was either an amazing magic trick or there was some absolute collusion going on there. Decent act but had to have been set up somehow.”

“What the f*** do they expect him to do for the final now?? Biggest fix ever, magic my bloody a***,” furiously wrote someone else.

As a fourth added: “Utterly rigged and the trick itself was too grand and ridiculous it shouldn’t even be called magic. I know exactly how he did it, it was rigged.”
