The airline with the worst leg room named — and it’s not Ryanair

Leg room can be an important factor for many passengers. Here are the airlines that offer the most room without having to pay extra

When it comes to jetting off, whether it’s a short-haul or long-haul flight, comfort is often a top priority. For those who are taller or struggle with leg space, the prospect of a cramped flight can be less than appealing.

The size of the seats and the amount of leg room can vary greatly depending on which airline you choose to fly with. As we head into the shoulder season for travel, many holidaymakers might be planning ahead for their Christmas or next summer.

Starting your holiday on the right note with a comfortable plane journey can be a deciding factor when choosing an airline. So, without having to fork out extra for additional legroom, which airlines offer the most space when buying a standard ticket?

According to a survey by consumer watchdog Which?, one airline offers more legroom than 15 other short-haul carriers from the UK. The survey measured seat pitch, which is the distance between your seat and the one in front – to determine legroom.

Taking the leading position is Aer Lingus, Ireland’s flag carrier, offering 29 to 30 inches. However – British Airways provide the same amount of room with exactly the same pitch.

The poorest performer regarding leg space is TAP Portugal, which provides just 28 inches of legroom, reports the Express.

Here’s a rundown from the airlines offering the most legroom to those offering the least:

Tiny village named one of Britain’s prettiest with ‘shockingly few visitors’

The charming northern village is a hidden gem with “magical” scenery, according to visitors

A charming village has been crowned the “prettiest little village of the north” thanks to its captivating and “magical” surroundings. Close to the Tabular Hills within the stunning North York Moors National Park, this peaceful haven is famous for its classic stone-brick homes and the legendary walnut tree standing proudly at its centre.

Despite having only 200 locals calling it home, the village boasts an impressive heritage with an extraordinary 29 listed structures. Hutton-le-Hole earned its place on CNN Traveller’s coveted list of Britain’s “most beautiful villages” and was lauded for its charm whatever the climate.

Their glowing review says: “Plant yourself on the grass in the centre of the village with a picnic and paddle in the stream, and when the heavens open, hibernate in one of its tea shops for a hearty slice of cake.”

This scenic village is both visually stunning and packed with things to do, featuring lovely tea rooms, wonderful gift shops, and fascinating historical landmarks, reports the Express.

Most notably, it’s home to the Ryedale Folk Museum which explores Yorkshire’s rich past in remarkable detail. The museum houses an incredible collection of more than 40,000 items spanning from the Iron Age through to the swinging 1950s.

The Ryedale Folk Museum’s website beckons visitors: “Don’t miss the medieval Manor House or Iron-Age Roundhouse. Call by the farming area, or find the perfect picnic site in our pretty heritage orchard. We’re also a dog-friendly day trip so don’t forget your canine friends too.”

A must-see attraction is The Chocolate Factory, founded by enterprising brothers Gareth and Chris East over two decades ago.

At this location, skilled craftspeople painstakingly create beautiful chocolates by hand using only the finest ingredients including fresh double cream, real alcohol, and genuine Belgian chocolate, all within their cosy micro-factory tucked away in Hutton-le-Hole’s picturesque surroundings.

Beyond this charming village stretches a network of walking trails that guide adventurous souls onto the magnificent Yorkshire Moors, where the spectacular purple heather creates a dreamlike landscape for those trekking or rambling across this national gem.

Emma, a travel enthusiast who focuses on pet-friendly locations through her blog ‘Paws Explore North’, shared her astonishment at the village’s tranquillity given its remarkable absence of tourists.

She revealed her shock in a recent post, saying: “The heather was out in full bloom and was absolutely lovely I was shocked that we didn’t see more people out enjoying it, especially as the weather was fantastic too.”

The charm of the picturesque village has been amplified by social media users who have dubbed it a “hidden gem”.

One visitor shared their experience: “Went for a hike and then had a picnic down by the river…it’s one of the most magical places I’ve ever been.”

Another expressed their admiration: “One of the prettiest little villages in the north.”

Meanwhile, another user heaped praise on the local museum: “Loved the museum. Been there a few times it’s brilliant well worth a visit.”

Airline with the smallest seats named – and it’s not easyJet or Ryanair

When it comes to short haul flights, the seat width is between 17 and 18 inches which may not sound like much – but that extra inch can make a lot of difference.

You’re all set for your dream holiday, breezed through security and about to board the aeroplane when you spot it: a tiny middle seat that’s going to be your home for the duration of your flight.

Thankfully, there’s now a method to determine which budget airline offers the widest seats, ensuring you don’t have to compromise on comfort.

Last year, Which? did the maths to identify which airlines offer the most spacious seats, helping you get the best value for your money.

For short haul flights, the seat width (the distance between each armrest) typically ranges from 17 to 18 inches, which might not seem like a significant difference, reports the Express.

However, that additional inch can make a world of difference when you’re crammed in like sardines.

According to the experts, the airlines offering the widest economy seats include Wizz Air, TAP Portugal, easyJet and Lufthansa, all boasting widths of 18 inches.

This leaves airlines like Aer Lingus, Loganair, Jet2 and Norwegian with the narrowest seat widths, which can all be as low as 17 inches. Below is a breakdown of airline seat width and legroom in inches.

If you’re looking to maximise space on your budget flight without shelling out extra cash, there are a few tricks you can employ.

One hack is to book a seat in the bulkhead – the seats located directly behind the partitions, curtains or screens that divide the plane. With no seats in front, you’ll have enough room to stretch your legs.

However, these can be a bit narrower if tray tables are stowed in the armrest.

If a bulkhead doesn’t take your fancy, opt for a seat towards the back of the plane where they taper. This could occasionally result in fewer seats in a row – but naturally, you might find yourself next to the loo queue which can be somewhat disruptive.

If you’re on a flight that’s already airborne and you spot extra vacant seats, you can always politely ask the cabin crew if it would be possible to switch.

Remember, if you don’t ask, you won’t get – and provided you’re polite, there’s a likelihood they will accommodate your request.

If you have additional requirements that would benefit from more room, such as being tall or pregnant, you’ve got a better chance of being relocated to a more spacious area.

Tropical Storm Humberto forms in Atlantic as eighth named storm

Tropical Storm Humberto is forecast to become a hurricane early Saturday and a major one by Sunday night. Image by National Hurricane Center

Sept. 24 (UPI) — Tropical Storm Humberto, the eighth named storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, formed Wednesday afternoon and is forecast to become a hurricane by Saturday and ultimately a major one, the National Hurricane Center said.

In a 5 p.m. EDT posting, NHC said Humberto became a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph, which is 1 mph below the minimum to be classified as a tropical storm. Six hours later, NHC said it had maximum sustained winds of 45 mph. A storm became a hurricane with winds at least 74 mph.

At 11 p.m., Humberto was about 505 miles east-northeast of the Northern Leeward Islands and was moving west-northwest at 12 mph.

NHC said the storm is expected to continue in the same direction over the next few days but with a lower forward speed.

“It may intensify into a hurricane late this weekend or early next week,” Alex DaSilva, AccuWeather lead hurricane expert, said.

NHC forecasters Richard Pasch and Eric Blake said in a discussion: “The system will probably become a hurricane in a couple of days, and then strengthen into a major hurricane.”

Humberto is forecast to pass between Bermuda and the U.S. East Coast.

“Towards the end of the forecast period, an approaching trough moving offshore the East Coast of the United States will erode the ridge and allow the system to turn more northward,” NHC forecaster Larry Kelly said in a discussion. “However, there is quite a bit of uncertainty with the forward speed and cross-track spread of the system.”

Tropical storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles, NHC said.

No coastal watches or warnings are in effect.

Of the eight named storms, two became hurricanes, both major.

In August, Erin intensified into a Category 5 hurricane with 160 mph winds spreading across a 500-mile area. It did not make landfall in the United States but caused dangerous surf, rip currents and coastal flooding along the East Coast, with the worst conditions in North Carolina and Virginia.

Gabrielle formed in mid-September and also became a major hurricane, a Category 4. In the 3 a.m. GMT update Thursday, Gabrielle had maximum sustained winds of 85 mph as a Category 1 storm and was about 855 miles west of the Azores.

Tropical Storm Chantal was the only storm to make landfall in the U.S. — South Carolina on July 6.

Ignored European city named ‘best for one-night trip’ and is just an hour from UK

Holidu has shared the ultimate European destinations for “one night only” trips, and the top-ranking destination is in France – notable for its walkability and proximity to the UK

Brits low on time but in desperate need of an escape can make the most of their holiday in one of the European cities. Named the best for “one night only” trips, these destinations are convenient to visit from the UK and can be thoroughly enjoyed — even if only for a day.

The holiday rental search engine, Holidu, has created a list of Europe’s best cities for one-night breaks, looking at the factors that can make all the difference in 24-hours, including travel time from the UK, the distance from the airport to the city centre and how long it takes to walk between the city’s three main attractions.

Overall, French cities reigned supreme for one-night stays, according to Holidu’s findings. Destinations in France took three of the top ten spots, with Rennes, Nantes, and Montpellier all performing well.

It is the short flights from the UK and compact city centres convenient for exploring on foot that make them perfect for quick holidays. That said, one destination was cited as the best of the best.

Taking first place for the best one-night European city break is France’s Breton capital, Rennes. The city scored exceptionally well for how quickly British travellers are able to get there from the UK, with flights taking just 59 minutes from London and the journey from the airport to the city centre taking less than 15 minutes.

One-night city breaks have become massively popular in recent years, as time-strapped travellers forgo weeks of planning and preparation for short escapes that don’t drain their holiday allowance.

But that’s also why choosing the right destination for a short trip can be tricky, and not all European cities work well for a one-night experience. According to Holidu’s research, big-name capitals aren’t always your best bet for one-night trips.

Paris sits at 47th on the search engine’s best ‘one night only’ destination list, while Rome comes in at 85th, and Athens at 95th. A large reason for this is because of how spread apart popular attractions are, making it difficult for those with only a day free to explore efficiently.

Coming in second on Holidu’s ranking is Nantes, France. The city ranked well for its short flight time of around 1 hour and 6 minutes from London, as well as a very short airport transfer time of just 14 minutes to the city centre. Nantes is also a highly walkable city, with its major attractions all situated within a 39-minute walk.

Bremen, Germany came in at third place, while Basel, Switzerland and The Hague, Netherlands came in fourth and fifth place respectively.

UK village named ‘world’s most beautiful’ has 3 big problems, claims local

Bibury in the Cotswolds has been named the most beautiful village in the world by Forbes Magazine – but for those of us who live here, it’s not quite the fairytale it seems

Being declared the world’s most stunning village might appear like a fantasy come true, but for residents of this picturesque settlement, the reality isn’t quite the fairy tale it appears to be.

Nestled in the heart of the Cotswolds, Bibury has captivated visitors for years with its golden limestone cottages, the renowned Arlington Row featuring its 14th century dwellings, meandering pathways, and the tranquil waters of the River Coln. Now, this acclaim has achieved international recognition.

In Forbes Magazine‘s freshly published 2025 compilation of the world’s 50 most stunning villages, Bibury claimed the top spot – an accolade that, whilst complimentary, has delivered a series of difficulties for those who reside in this community.

What was once a tranquil neighbourhood of approximately 600 to 700 inhabitants now regularly welcomes up to 20,000 visitors during a single weekend, reports the Express.

Craig Chapman, chairman of Bibury Parish Council, has voiced concerns about the obstacles accompanying the village’s growing fame, describing it as a “double-edged sword” and noting this recognition has “come at a cost” for residents.

Whilst tourism bolsters the local economy, it simultaneously creates three significant issues, according to Mr Chapman: tourist conduct, parking pandemonium and the narrow roadway.

Speaking to BBC Radio Gloucestershire, he said: “I’m fairly flabbergasted, having travelled the world, to believe we’re the most attractive village in the world. It’s a great honour, but it’s a little bit of a surprise; there’s a lot of competition out there.”

READ MORE: ‘I’m a Canadian living in the UK and there’s one coastal city I would move to’

Hallstatt in Austria took the runner-up spot in Forbes’ ranking, with Reine in Norway, Giethoorn in the Netherlands, and Gásadalur in the Faroe Islands trailing close behind.

Mr Chapman remarked: “It’s completely a double-edged sword. The issue is very much about the mechanisms whereby people come to the village and when they come here, how they behave, where they park.”

“The reality is we sit on a B-road. The road is narrow, there’s one bridge across the River Coln, which is only wide enough for one vehicle. We’ve suffered greatly from congestion, particularly from the larger coaches.”

He emphasised the need for “harmony” between tourists and locals but acknowledged that recent restrictions were making a difference. Gloucestershire County Council has implemented new measures, including a coach access limit introduced in May and a recommendation last month for tourists to visit in smaller vehicles.

Replacements named for ousted U.S. attorney in Virginia amid case pressure

Sept. 20 (UPI) — Replacements have been named for the acting U.S. attorney and nominee for the Eastern District of Virginia who was forced out after failing to bring criminal charges against New York Attorney General Letitia James regarding mortgage loan fraud.

Erik Siebert notified staff on Friday that he resigned, but President Donald Trump said he was fired. Siebert was nominated for the position and was awaiting Senate confirmation.

Trump posted on Truth Social he plans to nominate Lindsey Halligan, who “proved herself to be a tremendous trial lawyer, and later represented me (and WON!) in the disgraceful Democrat Documents Hoax, as well as MANY other major, high profile cases.” He was referring to his handling of classified material after leaving office following his first term.

Halligan, who is currently a special assistant in the White House, does not have any prosecutorial experience and her law license is in Florida, ABC News reported.

“Lindsey is a tough, smart, and loyal attorney, who has worked with me for a long time,” Trump posted on Truth Social on Saturday night. “As a Partner at the biggest Law Firm in Florida, Lindsey proved herself to be a tremendous trial lawyer.”

Earlier Saturday, Attorney General Pam Bondi appointed Mary “Maggie” Cleary, an attorney active in Republican politics, as acting U.S. attorney for the division, according an internal email obtained by Politico and The Washington Post.

This month, Cleary rejoined the DOJ as a senior counsel in the criminal division in the District of Columbia after working in the Culpepper Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office and Virginia state agencies.

She was placed on administrative leave in the DOJ’s Virginia Western District for being on Capitol grounds during the riot on Jan. 6, 2021. Clear said she was “framed” and was ultimately cleared.

Cleary will serve until a nominee is confirmed.

“This evening, I submitted my resignation as interim US Attorney for EDVA,” Siebert’s email, obtained by ABC News, read. “For the last eight months, I have had the pleasure of leading the finest and most exceptional of DOJ employees, who care deeply about our nation and our EDVA community. Thank you for the lessons you have taught me, the sacrifices you have made, and the pursuit of justice you strive for every day.”

On Saturday, Trump posted on X that he “withdrew the Nomination of Erik Siebert as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, when I was informed that he received the UNUSUALLY STRONG support of the two absolutely terrible, sleazebag Democrat Senators, from the Great State of Virginia. He didn’t quit, I fired him! Next time let him go in as a Democrat, not a Republican.”

He was referring to Virginia Sens. Tim Kaine and Mark Warner.

In a joint statement, Kaine and Warner said Siebert lost his job because his office was “unable to find incriminating evidence of mortgage fraud” against James, noting that there had been bipartisan support for his nomination.

“In April, after an extensive interview process that included the input of a bipartisan panel of former Virginia U.S. attorneys and other well-respected members of the Virginia legal community, Warner and Kaine sent a letter to the White House recommending Siebert for the U.S. attorney position,” they wrote. “In May, the White House announced that Siebert was formally nominated for the role,” Warner and Kaine said.

Both senators from a nominee’s state are sent a blue slip in which they may submit a favorable or unfavorable opinion of a nominee, regardless of their party. The Senate Judiciary Committee takes blue slips into consideration when deciding whether to recommend that the Senate confirm a nominee.

Media outlets, including CNN and The New York Times, reported that Justice Department prosecutors in Virginia believed they have not gathered enough evidence to indict James.

“Erik Siebert is an ethical prosecutor who refused to bring criminal charges against Trump’s perceived enemies when the facts wouldn’t support it,” the senators wrote. “The Eastern District of Virginia is at the forefront of significant cases essential to our national security, and just like any court in America, should be focused on justice instead of a thin-skinned president’s vendettas.”

Siebert, who worked for 15 years in Virginia as an assistant U.S. attorney, was the lead attorney for the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force and the deputy criminal supervisor for the Richmond Division.

He was also a police officer with the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C.

In March, he appeared with Attorney General Pam Bondi, Republican Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin and FBI Director Kash Patel on the arrest of an alleged MS-13 gang member in Northern Virginia.

Before posting on Truth Social, Trump told reporters, “Yeah, I want him out. When I learned that they voted for him, I said, I don’t really want him.”

New York’s attorney general is among three people targeted by the Trump administration for alleged loan fraud involving claims about two primary residences in Virginia and New York. No Republicans have been named, though Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin have two primary residences on loan paper, ProPublica reported.

William Pulte, director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, wrote a letter to Bondi alleging that James had “in multiple instances, falsified bank documents and property records to acquire government-backed assistance and loans and more favorable loan terms.” The letter was obtained by CBS News.

“The allegations are baseless,” James told NY1, “The allegations are nothing more than a revenge tour.”

James has been in Trump’s crosshairs since June 2022, when she sued Trump and the Trump Organization, alleging they inflated the values of properties.

Trump was ordered to pay $355 million in restitution for “ill-gotten gains” from his inflated financial statements, state Superior Court Judge Arthur Engoron ruled. With interest, the amount was raised to $527 earlier this year. But the Appellare Division in New York earlier this year canceled the fine and James has appealed.

Pulte has also targeted California Sen. Adam Schiff, a Democrat, and Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, appointed by President Joe Biden. Trump fired Cook, but the district and appeals courts have ruled that Trump doesn’t have the authority to fire someone from the Federal Reserve without due process and only for cause. Trump has asked the Supreme Court to weigh in.

Colourful UK forest trail past stunning waterfalls named one of ‘best autumn walks’

The Hafren Forest in Mid Wales has been named as the UK’s most popular autumn walk. t’s a stunning forest with a rich history and a variety of walking trails

As you step onto the woodland path, the first thing you’ll notice is the fresh air tinged with the earthy aroma of damp pine and moss, a sensory nod to nature in its wildest form.

Welcome to the lesser-known Hafren Forest in Mid Wales, home to tumbling waters, marked trails and the birthplace of a formidable river. The forest’s name, Hafren, derives from the Welsh term for the River Severn (Afon Hafren), which embarks on its impressive journey to the sea from this very spot.

This meticulously managed woodland boasts a rich history and numerous trails to discover. According to TikTok data, it has just been crowned the most popular autumn walk in the UK, showcasing its beauty best during the autumn and winter months. Other walking spots across the Peak District, Scotland, and the Lake District have also secured spots in the top 10.

To encourage folks to soak up the great outdoors and enjoy quality time together without breaking the bank, caravan holiday providers Parkdean Resorts have revealed the UK’s favourite autumn walks and are offering a 20% discount on four-night staycations this autumn.

Overseen by Natural Resources Wales, the forest strikes a balance between commercial forestry, conservation, and public enjoyment, making it an essential habitat for wildlife and a sanctuary for outdoor enthusiasts and walkers, reports Wales Online.

Originally established as a timber production forest, Hafren Forest has evolved into a beloved and accessible spot for walkers. Its blend of natural splendour, historical features, and well-kept trails draw visitors throughout the year.

The trails are clearly marked and welcoming, meandering through clusters of pines and firs, their natural symmetry creating overhead archways that frame the path ahead.

The winding river is the star attraction here. The Afon Hafren, more commonly known as the River Severn, commences its journey on the slopes of Pumlumon, with its concealed source lying just beyond the forest’s edge.

Initially, it’s merely a tranquil stream threading its way through the trees with quiet resolve. However, it soon gains momentum, cascading over rocky ledges and morphing into thunderous waterfalls that carve their way through the landscape with unyielding vigour.

“Autumn is my favourite time to visit this serene forest, when the foliage changes colour and the air becomes crisper,” says writer Portia Jones.

There’s an abundance of trails to amble along here, all clearly marked from beginning to end. Starting at the Rhyd-y-benwch car park, the paths guide you through towering trees, past gushing waterfalls, and even to the hidden source of the River Severn.

She adds: “My favourite trail is the 13 km-long Source of the Severn Trail, which leads to the source of the River Severn through a varied landscape.”

It’s quite astounding to consider that the mighty River Severn, stretching over 220 miles, originates here in Hafren Forest. The river’s modest beginnings on the slopes of Pumlumon rapidly gather pace as the water etches its path through the forest, creating a series of vibrant cascades and waterfalls.

As you traverse the trails, the river’s sound evolves, becoming more powerful and persistent. Each stride brings you nearer to the water’s rhythm, escalating like an overture before unveiling its concealed source beyond the forest’s boundary.

Reaching the source is no ordinary stroll. A steep ascent leads you onto the moorland, where a simple, carved wooden post signifies the start of the UK’s longest river.

Hafren Forest also serves as the launch point for two epic long-distance walks. The Wye Valley Walk traces the River Wye for 136 miles, whilst the Severn Way follows the Severn’s route to Bristol. For a shorter and more manageable walk, the 2.3 km Severn-Break-its-Neck Trail provides a picturesque romp through woodland.

This trail lives up to its dramatic name. Starting at the car park, you’ll follow a gently meandering path along the river until it expands into a meadow, where a boardwalk brings you closer to the sound of rushing water.

After a brief climb, the Severn-Break-Its-Neck waterfall comes into sight. Cycling enthusiasts can take advantage of the Sustrans National Cycle Network, a scenic route that meanders through the forest and beyond, offering a quicker way to soak up the region’s stunning landscapes.

Consider booking a stay at Cedar Cottage in Llanidloes for a snug autumn getaway. This charming semi-detached barn conversion, once an old grinding mill, is perfectly suited for a small family or a group of mates.

The cottage boasts a host of amenities including double and twin rooms, a fully equipped kitchen, a cosy sitting room with an electric stove, and a shared garden at the back complete with patio furniture. You can secure your booking here.

Major UK city named ‘safest’ to live in Scotland beating rival

A recent study named the cities in the country that are the safest to stay in or travel to – and this one took the number one spot

When choosing where to live, everyone will have their own preferences. Whilst easy access to green spaces and parks might be the top priority for some, others will focus on amenities and shopping facilities.

Nevertheless, many Scots would agree that few things matter as much as safety. Thankfully, Scotland’s villages, towns, and cities are typically very secure places to call home.

If you place safety above everything else, though, it can be challenging to know where in Scotland to put down roots. Luckily, a recent study has revealed the cities in the country that are the safest to reside in or visit.

Scotland’s “safest city” was recently named by Reolink(Image: georgeclerk / Getty Images)

As reported by the Daily Record, the “safest cities” in Scotland were identified earlier this year by Reolink. Five cities across the nation were ranked by their ‘safety index’ score, which “shows the consistency of local police in managing crimes and maintaining peace within the city”.

Topping the experts’ list was Edinburgh. The Scottish capital achieved a high safety index score of 68.98. Reolink also discovered that 82 per cent of people living in Edinburgh feel secure. According to the experts, “continuous patrolling has been done in heavy traffic areas” of the city. Meanwhile, Edinburgh was found to have a ‘crime index’ of just 30.99.

Also, theft, dishonesty, and house break-ins are amongst the most common offences reported in the Scottish capital. Reolink declared: “Edinburgh is ranked as the safest city in Scotland. It has a safety index of 68.98 according to Numbeo, with the lowest crime index of 30.99. It usually reports cases of theft, dishonesty, house break-ins, and offences.”

“According to the reports, over 82 per cent of the residents feel safe living there. It’s a student-friendly city where continuous patrolling has been done in heavy traffic areas.”

Reolink also branded Edinburgh as being “significantly safer” than Glasgow. The specialists revealed that Scotland’s biggest city “has higher violent crime rates, which makes it less safe than Edinburgh”.

Trailing in second spot on Reolink’s ranking of Scotland’s most secure cities was Aberdeen. The Granite City was discovered to possess the “lowest violent crime rate and high safety standards”, achieving a safety index rating of 63.20.

Meanwhile, Inverness claimed third position as the nation’s safest city. Based on Reolink’s findings, the Scottish Highlands city boasts a safety index rating of 62.13.

Completing the top five on the ranking were Glasgow and Dundee. The former achieved a safety index rating of 54.56, whilst Dundee’s safety index rating stood at 51.40.

Beyond Scotland’s cities, Reolink revealed that Orkney and Shetland rank amongst the nation’s most secure regions. The specialists noted that the archipelagos maintain lower crime figures when measured against other Scottish locations.

Reolink stated: “Safety ranks as one of the major concerns for people visiting and living in Scotland. It is necessary to inquire about the safety of everywhere you stay or travel.”

UK town named ‘most beautiful’ boasts top Christmas market

The UK’s most beautiful city has been named – and it’s also home to one of the best Christmas markets in the country

A charming UK city has been declared the globe’s most stunning during the autumn period, though it remains a treasure all year round. Beyond its remarkably scenic location, Bath also boasts one of Britain’s finest Christmas markets, according to consumer watchdog Which?

The market features an ice rink, ideal for a spot of festive fun, and naturally, numerous stalls to explore. Most vendors are locals from the South West, offering an impressive array of items – from garden ornaments to handcrafted timber furniture.

Shoppers can snap up knitted garments, fragrances and even treats for their four-legged friends, reports the Express.

Naturally, no festive market would be complete without food, and Bath’s offering doesn’t disappoint.

From regional delicacies to seasonal flapjacks and beyond, visitors will be overwhelmed by choice at this Christmas market.

Beyond its outstanding market, Bath has claimed the crown as Britain’s most beautiful city during autumn and winter, according to Premier Inn’s travel specialists.

The ancient city has surpassed international rivals including Chicago and Cape Town, clinching first place in the worldwide beauty rankings.

Tripadvisor’s top-rated local landmark, Bath Abbey, has served as a holy site for more than a thousand years.

Travellers have flocked to Tripadvisor to share their praise, with one visitor observing: “A beautiful and peaceful space to spend time.”

Another expressed their delight: “Visited more than once. So much to see and appreciate the history and architectural beauty.”

Despite some tourists’ disappointment at not being able to take a dip in the Roman Baths, the site’s captivating exhibits bring the ancient location to life.

Among the fascinating relics at the Baths is a collection of curse tablets, where disgruntled Romans etched their grievances seeking divine vengeance, tossing them into Minerva’s Spring.

While the historic Baths are off-limits for swimming, the Thermae Bath Spa provides adults with a lavish spa experience using the city’s naturally warm, mineral-rich waters.

For those looking for a cosy cafe, Bath offers a variety of snug spots, complete with the chance to savour the famous ‘Bath Bun’, a sweet roll decorated with fruit and crushed sugar.

Bath is renowned for its stunning architecture, a feature that has earned the city its status as a dedicated UNESCO site.

Visitors might recognise familiar sights across the city, seen in popular shows like Bridgerton, Poldark and The Sixth Commandment.

Stunning UK train journey named the best in the whole of Europe

A recent study analysing passenger review data has named the best train journey in all of Europe, offering travellers unparalleled views of the Scottish Highlands

A scenic train trip across Scotland has been named the best in Europe according to a new study. The journey offers impeccable views of some of the country’s most iconic vistas and natural landmarks.

Conducted by FruityKing, a recent study analysed the rating data of thousands of passenger reviews to determine which European train lines offer the most scenic routes for travellers. The analysis revealed that the Kyle Line had the highest average passenger rating, scoring 4.72 out of a possible 5.

The Kyle Line runs from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh. Inverness makes for the starting point of multiple great day trips, including a full-day trip through the Isle of Skye, which you can find via TripAdvisor.

The Kyle Line costs £32 to ride and accompanying children can travel for a mere £1 return each, with up to four children allowed per adult. The line crosses some of the most awe-inspiring and remote landscapes in the Scottish Highlands.

Passengers can comfortably enjoy panoramic views of misty mountains including Ben Wyvis in Easter Ross, the Torridon Peaks in the Northwestern Highlands, and the famous Loch Luichart Estate.

Travellers interested in exploring more under-the-radar destinations along the line can also consider a stop in Duirinish. Trainline has highlighted the town as one of the most underrated, isolated destinations on the UK rail network.

A spokesperson for the ticketing app told the Mirror: “The penultimate stop on the Kyle line, the UK’s most remote yet underrated railway, and with only 17 passengers booked via Trainline in the last year, Duirinish is frequently overlooked.

“This quaint township provides insight into crofting, a practice unique to the Highlands, with the opportunity to spot Highland cows thanks to a nearby dedicated tour.” While you’re there, you can get off at the market town of Dingwall for the Far North Line for more distinctive mountain range views and the Torridon Peaks.

The journey from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh takes roughly 2 hours and 40 minutes, so you can return back to Inverness on the same day.

The passenger review study listed the Isle of Man Steam Railway as the second best train journey in Europe, earning an impressive average rating score of 4.71 out of 5 based on 1,327 reviews.

Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways and West Somerset Railway were also highlighted as top train lines in the study.

As well, Switzerland’s Bernina Express made the list with an average passenger rating of 4.67. The renowned route traverses the Swiss Alps through staggering and stunning mountain passes.

Dallas Wings star Paige Bueckers named WNBA Rookie of the Year | Basketball News

Bueckers averaged 19.2 points on 47.7 percent shooting along with 3.9 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 1.6 steals in the season.

Dallas Wings’ basketball star Paige Bueckers has won the WNBA Rookie of the Year honour after one of the best debut seasons in league history.

Bueckers received 70 of the 72 votes from sportswriters and broadcasters in balloting announced by the league on Tuesday. The other two went to Washington Mystics guard Sonia Citron.

Bueckers was a bright spot for a team that tied the Chicago Sky with a league-worst 10-34 record after being drafted with the number-one overall pick and the first Dallas Wings player to win the award since Allisha Gray in 2017. The former UConn star averaged 19.2 points on 47.7 per cent shooting along with 3.9 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 1.6 steals.

But those numbers do not tell the complete story.

Her 692 points and 194 assists were the third most by a WNBA rookie. The highlight was when she scored 44 in a loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on August 20.

It was the WNBA’s highest point total this season and the most ever by a rookie. She also became the first player in league history to score 40 or more while shooting 80 per cent in a game.

That performance came near the end of a 30-game double-digit streak, the third longest to start a career behind A’ja Wilson’s 33 games in 2018 and Candace Parker’s 32 games in 2008.

Jude Bellingham: Fit-again midfielder named in Real Madrid squad for Champions League tie

He scored 15 goals in 58 games last season, with Los Blancos losing the league title to Barcelona and knocked out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals by Arsenal.

Bellingham’s fellow Englishman Trent Alexander-Arnold is also in the squad for the visit of the Ligue 1 side.

Former Liverpool defender Alexander-Arnold played the last eight minutes of their 2-1 win over Real Sociedad at the weekend having struggled to displace experienced Spain full-back Dani Carvajal in the starting line-up.

Alonso said Carvajal’s “competitive spirit” and “the influence he holds as a captain” are a vital asset for Real.

“He [Carvajal] was still recovering while we were in the United States, but now he’s fit enough to play, you can see what a positive impact he has on everyone around him,” added Alonso.

“We need to have those kinds of leaders in a dressing room, they’re crucial. Carva is an example of that. There are lots of others and we need that strong core to guide the rest.”

Europe boasts countless stunning cities ideal for weekend breaks or extended holidays, with one destination claiming the ultimate crown. Research by Which? Travel has declared Krakow the continent’s finest city break for an unprecedented fifth consecutive year.

The Which? study evaluated seven key factors: cuisine and beverages, lodging, cultural landmarks and attractions, retail offerings, transport convenience, crowd levels, and financial value. An overall rating was then determined based on general satisfaction and the likelihood visitors would recommend the destination.

Krakow topped the rankings with a remarkable 92% score. The Polish city earned five-star ratings for its food and drink, accommodation, and transport links.

Uniquely, it was the sole destination to achieve five stars for value for money, with Kayak data showing average nightly accommodation costs of just £86. The city also secured four stars for its cultural offerings.

One survey respondent commented: “Beautiful, mainly unspoilt city. Superb food at a fair price. I’ve stayed many times, and there are lots of good-value hotels. Friendly and pretty safe.”

Kraków is particularly renowned for enabling day excursions to historically significant sites like Auschwitz and the Wieliczka Salt Mine, creating a deeply meaningful travel experience.

One visitor to Kraków shared on TripAdvisor: “We visited over Easter weekend so it was extremely busy but the atmosphere was buzzing. The markets were on, a sun was blazing and the horse and carriages were clattering around the streets.

“Whilst there the area was clean and tidy, there was no trouble at all and it was great to see people carrying their Easter baskets. The buildings and churches were beautiful and we really enjoyed the park.”

Another chimed in: “Beautiful city, what I can highly recommend as a place to discover a little Poland. Lots of attractions around and legends.”

Naomi Leach, Deputy Editor of Which? Travel, sharing the survey results, said: “Whether you are looking for culture, art, history or top gastronomy, there are several European cities that deliver. Book ahead and choose to visit off season to secure the best prices.

“British holidaymakers who look beyond the most famous destinations, can find great value for money in foodie escapes, such as Krakow and Valencia. Despite the crowds, classic city breaks Venice and Vienna scored highly with visitors due to their unparalleled cultural attractions.”

On Wednesday, organisers confirmed his identity and said they were working with the Pershing County sheriff’s office, which is leading the investigation.

In a statement, Burning Man said: “Our hearts go out to Vadim’s family and friends, and we grieve the loss of a community member.

“Burning Man Project is doing everything we can to assist the sheriff’s investigation so the perpetrator can be caught and brought to justice.”

The festival added that it was donating to a programme allowing witnesses to share information anonymously and urged anyone with knowledge to come forward.

Friends said Kruglov had been missing for four days before his body was found.

His pal Sofiia Shcherbakova wrote on Instagram: “His tent and belongings were left at camp, but he never returned.”

She later confirmed his death, calling him a “true hero of Burning Man”.

“He poured his soul into our community: building the camp, creating an art installation, always ready to help others, and being kind and responsive to everyone,” she wrote.

“His energy and contribution will forever remain part of the Burn’s history.”

In a follow-up post, Shcherbakova said she was raising funds to bring his body back to his hometown of Omsk, Siberia.

“Now we want to honour his memory and support his family,” she said.

“We are raising funds to bring him home to Omsk, so that his parents can say their last goodbye and lay him to rest with his loved ones.”

As of Thursday, the GoFundMe had collected $4,063 of its $15,000 goal.

The sheriff’s office has condemned the killing, calling for information that could lead to the arrest of “any person who would commit such a heinous crime against another human being”.

They have so far declined to release further details about how Kruglov died.

Burning Man — famous for its giant effigies, art installations and eccentric camps — attracts tens of thousands of revellers every year, including tech billionaires and celebrities.

About 70,000 people from 102 countries attended this year’s gathering.

The festival was already rocked last week by intense dust storms that left some attendees injured.

It also saw the shock birth of a baby in an RV after a woman who did not know she was pregnant went into labour on site.

I visited pretty market town named UK’s best place to live — I’d move there right now

There was one specific spot I absolutely adored

Laura Nightingale smiles for the camera as she takes a selfie in Farnham Town Centre

It’s been described as a ‘handsome market town’ with ‘bags of character’, and is known for its picturesque Georgian streets, handsome Tudor and Georgian stone buildings and easy access to the rolling hills that surround it.

And earlier this summer, a 2025 guide named Farnham, on the western edge of Surrey, among the best places to live in the UK. I spent the day in the beautiful town exploring its huge array of independent shops, thriving arts scene, superb restaurants and peaceful parks. Farnham is currently undergoing a huge regeneration project called Brightwells Yard, which will see 239 new homes, 25 commercial units for shops and restaurants, a six-screen cinema, a multi-storey car park and landscaped public open spaces.

Roadworks in the town centre are expected to continue until early 2027. But I didn’t let that put me off, and I parked in the Sainsbury’s car park and wandered around the pretty neighbourhood on foot.

I first visited Gostrey Meadow, and it painted a picture for the whole neighbourhood. There was a real community feel about the place with children playing in a new playground (opened in July) and families enjoying picnics under serene willow trees by the trickling River Wey.

On Sunday afternoons throughout the summer, people can gather around the bandstand and listen to live jazz music on the lawn for free. I bought a coffee from Jamie’s Coffee van and watched ducks bob along the water before moving on to Farnham Maltings.

The superb arts centre in Bridge Square is situated along the river, and it’s in a picturesque location for watching shows or participating in workshops. I only walked past on my way to Downing Street (not the London one), but I nearly stopped at its café as it sold tempting artisan sourdough, open Danish sandwiches.

Downing Street, which is currently closed to some traffic but not pedestrians, is a hidden gem for mooching around independent shops and quaint eateries. I stopped at a glorious little little spot called Hamilton’s Tea House half way up the street for a snack.

As I sat down at a table by the window, I looked around and noticed all three fellow diners were tucking into scones which immediately made me fancy one. By the counter I could see a display of huge plain, sultana and cheese scones and I gave in and ordered a fruit one (£4).

Served on a rectangular plate with butter, a mini pot of clotted cream and a jar of strawberry jam, I quickly understood why it was a hit among the other customers. Ultra light and fluffy, and incredibly buttery and moreish, I devoured the lot, not leaving a crumb.

With my sweet tooth satisfied, I continued walking up the quaint road, popping my head into a charity shop along the way, before I reached The Borough and then Castle Street home to familiar chain restaurants including Gail’s Bakery, Caffe Nero, Bill’s, Giggling Squid and Pizza Express.

we would be fine

On the corner was The Castle pub, a stunning gastropub set within a beautiful Grade two listed Georgian townhouse. Stylish yet relaxed, it boasted a hidden covered courtyard garden at the rear offering a tranquil oasis from the bustle of town life.

On the outskirts of the main town centre was Waverley Abbey, Farnham Castle, Birdworld, Farnham Park, Museum of Farnham, Bourne Mill Antiques Centre and Alice Holt Forest, so you could really spend a weekend there. On the fourth Sunday of every month, a farmers’ market takes place in Central Car Park.

I really enjoyed exploring the pretty Surrey town and I would happily move there tomorrow. It felt safe, clean and was bursting with character. I absolutely adored Gostrey Meadow, it was my favourite bit.

Farnham is a popular place to live for young professionals and families, especially those looking to escape the city for an idyllic rural life but still with easy access to the capital. There is a regular and direct train service from Farnham to London Waterloo which usually takes around 90 minutes.

According to Rightmove, house prices in Farnham have an overall average of £611,117 over the last year. This is just above the Surrey average of £598,462.

The majority of properties sold in Farnham during the last year were detached properties, selling for an average price of £897,765. Semi-detached properties sold for an average of £538,557, with terraced properties fetching £435,120.
