Mbappe rescues 10-man Real Madrid against Marseille in Champions League | Football News
Kylian Mbappe converted two penalties, and 10-man Real Madrid came back to beat visiting Marseille 2-1 on the opening night of the new Champions League season.
The victory on Tuesday meant that 15-time champion Madrid became the first team in competition history – since the rebranding in the early 1990s – to reach 200 wins.

It also gave former Madrid-playing standout Xabi Alonso a victory in his Champions League debut as the club’s coach.
Timothy Weah put visiting Marseille ahead early on, but Mbappe struck back from the penalty spot in the 29th and 81st.
The first penalty came after a foul on Rodrygo, and the second was for a handball by a defender.
Mbappe now has 50 goals in 64 matches with Madrid, moving level with former Real and Manchester United forward Ruud van Nistelrooy.
“We are happy that he keeps scoring goals and has been feeling more and more comfortable,” Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde said of the France player.
“Our job is to make sure the ball gets to him and that he can have even more scoring opportunities than he is having now.”
Madrid captain Dani Carvajal was sent off in the 72nd for head-butting Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli.
Weah, a United States international and the son of former Ballon d’Or winner George Weah, was set up by Mason Greenwood, who stripped Madrid’s Arda Guler near midfield.
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Champions League debut for Madrid lasted only five minutes. The England defender was replaced by Carvajal because of an apparent muscle injury.
Spanish police clashed with Marseille fans before the match, but the situation was controlled quickly.
Dortmund and Juventus share eight-goal thriller
An early own goal from goalkeeper Luiz Junior gave Tottenham a 1-0 win over visiting Villarreal.
Borussia Dortmund and Juventus drew 4-4 in Turin. Juventus substitute Dusan Vlahovic scored one goal in stoppage time. He then set up the equaliser for English defender Lloyd Kelly. The game had been 0-0 at halftime.
Qarabag came from two goals down to win 3-2 at Benfica.
In the second season of the new league-phase format, the top eight teams advance to the round of 16. The next 16 teams enter a two-leg playoff, with eight advancing.

Arsenal subs decisive against Bilbao
Viktor Gyokeres was off target in his Champions League debut for Arsenal.
The London club’s substitutes were decisive, though, in a 2-0 win for the Gunners at Athletic Bilbao.
Gabriel Martinelli scored less than a minute after he came on, and Leandro Trossard, who had replaced Gyokeres, doubled the lead 15 minutes later.
Gyokeres, Arsenal’s prized signing who scored six Champions League goals for Sporting Lisbon last season, missed a golden chance shortly after the break. The Sweden international evaded his marker with ease and rose to meet a well-placed free kick from Declan Rice, but his header went well wide of the target.
Martinelli and Trossard also provided the assists on each other’s goals.
Union’s memorable debut in Eindhoven
Competition newcomer Union Saint-Gilloise made a memorable debut, as the Belgian club won 3-1 across the border at PSV Eindhoven.
The first goal of this season’s competition was a penalty kick converted by Canada international Promise David.
The penalty was awarded when United States international Ricardo Pepi harshly landed his boot into the leg of Union’s English centre back, Christian Burgess.
Goalkeeper Matej Kovar then went the wrong way on the spot kick in the ninth minute.
Another error by Pepi led to Union’s second before the break, a dribbling exhibition and expert finish by Anouar Ait El Hadj.
Union, who qualified by winning the Belgian league for the first time in 90 years, is one of four clubs making their competition debuts this season. The others are Bodø/Glimt (Norway), Kairat (Kazakhstan) and Pafos (Cyprus).
Argentinian defender Kevin Mac Allister, who is named for Macaulay Culkin’s character in Home Alone, made it 3-0 from close range in the 81st.
Ruben van Bommel, the son of former Netherlands standout Mark van Bommel, scored for PSV in the 90th.
PSV had gone unbeaten in its previous 11 group or league matches in the UEFA competition.

“It’s true that no teeth were broken during the fight, but it was a fight like I’ve never seen in all my years in football,” said De Zerbi.
“For the first time in my career, I didn’t know what to say or what to do. I’ve never seen anything like it. I come from the streets, I’m used to fights, but I’ve never seen anything like this.
“The club’s bodyguards were trying to separate them. Normally they’re supposed to protect us from others, not from ourselves.”
While Marseille president Pablo Longoria described the incident as “extremely violent,” Rabiot’s mother Veronique subsequently called the club’s decision to place the midfielder on the transfer list as a “betrayal” and compared his situation to Mason Greenwood joining the club.
But De Zerbi responded: “The mother has forgotten two things. I decided to make him captain… and in one year, I gave her son more attention and affection than I did my own son.
“For Rabiot’s mother to say that we gave Greenwood a second chance, that’s crazy. We’re talking about private life here. It’s not fair to talk about other people. We’re talking about a fight in a workplace.”
England Under-21 international Rowe signed for Marseille from Norwich on an initial loan in August 2024, before making the move permanent this summer. The 22-year-old forward, who has three goals in 31 appearances for the club, has been linked to Bologna.
Former Paris St-Germain player Rabiot joined Marseille last September on a free transfer after five years at Juventus, and has scored 10 times in 32 games.
The 30-year-old, capped 53 times by France, has been linked with Monaco and also Manchester United, who are keen to sign a defensive midfielder.
More than 100 injured as wildfire rages near Marseille
Some 110 people have been injured in a fast-moving wildfire that has reached the outer edge of Marseille, France’s second largest city.
Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau said about 800 firefighters were at the scene and efforts to tackle the blaze would continue “all night”, as the fire was not yet contained.
The city’s mayor, Benoît Payan, said earlier that the “marine firefighter battalion is waging guerrilla warfare, hoses in hand,” referring to Marseille’s fire and rescue service.
At least 400 people have been evacuated from their homes, according to French media. Nine firefighters are said to have been injured.
Residents had been warned to stay indoors and urged not to evacuate unless they were instructed to, so the roads would be clear for emergency vehicles.
At its peak, the fire spread at a rate of 1.2km (0.7 miles) per minute, the mayor said, according to French broadcaster BFMTV. He blamed a combination of wind gusts, dense vegetation, and steep slopes.
French President Emmanuel Macron, who was on a state visit to the UK, expressed support for fire crews and called for residents to follow safety instructions.
“Our thoughts are with the injured and all residents,” he wrote on X.
Interior minister Retailleau arrived in Marseille on Tuesday evening, where he met local officials.
Marseille Provence airport said it would partially reopen from 21:30 local time (19:30 GMT) after being closed for many hours from about midday on Tuesday. Julien Coffinier, the airport’s president, said he had “never experienced a situation of this magnitude”.

The Bouches-du-Rhône area has not recorded a single drop of rain since 19 May, according to BFMTV.

Wildfires were also reported in other parts of Europe, including the Catalonia region of north-east Spain, where more than 18,000 people were ordered to stay at home on Tuesday because of a wildfire in the eastern province of Tarragona.
Emergency units were deployed alongside 300 firefighters as high winds overnight fanned the flames, which have spread across nearly 3,000 hectares (7,413 acres) of land.
Several other parts of Spain – which experienced its hottest June on record – were on high alert for wildfires.
In Greece, some 41 wildfires broke out across the country on Monday. Of those, 34 were contained early while seven remained active into Monday evening, according to the fire service.
Much of western and southern Europe was hit by a scorching early summer heatwave, sparking fires that saw thousands evacuated from their homes.

Angel Gomes: Marseille reach agreement in principle to sign England midfielder on free transfer
Marseille have reached an agreement in principle to sign England midfielder Angel Gomes on a free transfer.
The French club had been in talks to sign the 24-year-old, who announced in May that he would leave Lille when his contract expires this summer.
Premier League clubs Tottenham and West Ham were also linked with Gomes, but he has chosen to remain in Ligue 1.
Since joining from Manchester United in 2020, Gomes has scored 10 goals and provided 19 assists in 134 appearances for Lille.
He earned his first four senior caps for England under interim manager Lee Carsley last year, but has yet to feature under current boss Thomas Tuchel.
