THE year of 2025 is coming to a close, which means it’s time to think about where you should be taking a break next year, and we have some very good deals for you.

Holiday expert for On the Beach, Robert Brooks, has found some incredible deals for each month of 2026 – and every holiday is under £1000pp.

January

To kick off 2026 right, Rob says holidaymakers should head to Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands where “prices actually drop after the New Year”.

The island has beautiful beaches, theme parks, plenty of nightlife as well as pretty old towns.

The island is known for having year-round sunshine, which is why it makes for a great pick in January – it has highs of 20C.

As for where to stay, Rob revealed his choice would be Laguna Park II which he described as “a proper sunshine escape to kick off the year.

February

Knowing what Brits want, Rob was on the hunt for a holiday that’s “warm, fun and cheap” in February, which Marrakech has in abundance.

The hotel isn’t one you’ll want to miss either, Rob describes it as “a red-walled palace that’s pure Moroccan magic.

“Think palm gardens, serene pools and spa vibes a few minutes from the Medina buzz. Perfect for a romantic February reset with sunshine and mint tea by the pool.”

It’s called the Palais El Miria, which is a few minutes drive away from the centre of Marrakech.

Each room is decorated in traditional Moroccan colours, and has an ensuite bathroom with shower and a private terrace.

Some suites also include baths and private indoor gardens.

Head of Sun Travel Lisa Minot recently visited Marrakech, where she revealed it to be as “exciting as ever” with plenty of spots to sunbathe but also explore the markets and head across the desert dunes.

Five nights in February at the Palais El Miria for two adults on a bed and breakfast basis starts from £273pp.

March

The weather in the Mediterranean begins to warm up in March, so you can take a short trip to the likes of Malta or Madeira

But where Rob actually recommends is the legendary American city of Las Vegas, where Rob adds it’s “22C in March and you can go for the weekend, it’s really not that bad – plenty warm for me and plenty to do”.

As for the hotel, head to the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino which has “bright lights, big pool, and blackjack. This classic Vegas resort delivers that proper Strip energy with everything on your doorstep.

“Perfect for a short hit of glam, shows, and sunshine before spring kicks in back home.”

If you want to head into the city, the hotel has a monorail that takes you to the heart of the local attractions like the Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens, the Neon Museum, and of course, you can’t miss the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign.

Four nights in March at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino for two adults for room only starts from £595pp.

April

Rob told Sun Travel: “In April, one place springs to mind straight away because April’s the sweet spot in Rome before all the crowds turn up”.

He continued: “It’s warm enough for gelato and piazzas but cool enough to walk through them all day. Rome is at its best when locals outnumber the tourists”

The B&B Hotel Roma Tuscolana San Giovanni is conveniently placed in the heart of the city and it’s right next to the train station is any other parts of Italy tickle your fancy.

Rob adds: “This comfy, modern hotel puts you close to the sights without the faff. Perfect for pizza, piazzas and people-watching before summer crowds arrive.”

For top tips on visiting Rome, one writer revealed some of the best places he discovered on a trip there – like eating in a restaurant that was a former sculptor’s workshop.

Of course you have to see the classics too; no trip to the Italian city is complete without seeing the iconic Colosseum and Trevi Fountain.

Two nights in April for at B&B Hotel Roma Tuscolana San Giovanni for two adults for bed and breakfast starts from £208pp.

May

In May, Rob says: “We’re into summer and I want to go somewhere that’s already in full swing, 27C all-inclusive and prices that are half of what they’ll be in July – Antalya’s my pick”.

The seaside resort in Turkey is known for being a hit with families thanks to its abundance of activities like the Land of Legends theme park, to spending time on its beautiful beaches.

Rob suggests staying in the Numa Konaktepe Hotel for “family sun and zero stress.

“With its private beach, slides, and stacks of food options, this place is made for lazy pool days and warm evenings. May sunshine guaranteed – and your wallet stays happy too.”

During May, temperatures reach pleasant average highs of 24C and there’s an average of just two days of rain during the entire month.

An all-inclusive seven night stay for a family of four at the Numa Konaktepe starts from £237pp.

June

Halfway through the year, and Rob is firm on where to head during June.

He said: “I’m going to a Greek island, and they don’t get better than Rhodes for me. Hot but bearable, crystal waters and lovely beaches before peak season.”

You can stay at Pefkos Beach, which Rob dubs a “Greek gem” which has both “a laid-back and lively vibe”.

It’s also got a big outdoor pool with a poolside bar, and while it has an on-site restaurant, it’s very near to local eateries.

One writer recently visited the island where she saw the Acropolis ruins, pretty windmills and discovered that you can sign up to an olive oil or wine tasting course.

Seven nights at the Pefkos Beach in Rhodes for a family of four (self-catering) starts from £324pp.

July

During the summer months, prices can quickly increase, but Rob has his eye on somewhere which doesn’t seem to have been hit so hard.

He says: “In recent years, I’ve seen so many great value bookings to the Algarve: family-friendly, easy to get to with loads of flight availability, you can even party there if you want, and it’s cheaper than Spain at this time of year.”

With On the Beach, you can book to go to Colina da Lapa, a luxury apartment complex with pretty gardens and a huge swimming pool.

You can laze about on the sunbeds, or splash about in the pool, but for entertainment, you can play tennis, table tennis, basketball, beach volleyball, billiards, minigolf and golf.

It has an outdoor terrace and a restaurant and for daytrips, it’s very near the the town of Carvoeiro .

August

“There are few places as beautiful as Croatia in August, yes it’s busy, but worth it. Island hopping, beach clubs, turquoise water, it’s like Ibiza but half the price and double the charm.”

The Zaton Holiday Resort in Zadar will be a hit with families who will never be bored thanks to its nine swimming pools with plenty of slides, a private beach, restaurants, pizzeria and kids club.

It’s home to the Flip Flop Activity Park which has mini-golf, adventure golf, table tennis and archery.

And you can do watersports too like diving, para-sailing, jet-skiing, and wind-surfing.

The Sun’s Alex Goss revealed more on their visit to Zadar, which despite being in August was surprisingly quiet, and joined plenty of excursions from river rafting to island hopping.

September

One month on and Rob suggests hopping over to Spain for September.

He says: “September’s got to be the best time to visit Spain’s hottest city, literally. The crowds are gone, but the heat is still there, and you’ll find some of the best tapas in Europe. S is for September, and Seville.”

The Patio de la Alameda in the middle of Seville’s Alameda de Hércules is a charming boutique hotel with three courtyards lined with orange trees.

There are 39 rooms that all come with private bathrooms, air con, plus there’s an on-site cafe for snacks and drinks.

Deputy Travel Editor Kara Godfrey is a big fan of Seville where she sipped on cheap wine and wandered around the royal palaces.

October

It’s cooling down in the UK, so you’ll have to go away for some seriously hot weather.

Rob says: “For 28C in October and glorious sunshine whilst everyone else is wearing jumpers at home, Cyprus is perfect for half-term or one last swim before winter”.

Ayia Napa might be known as the party part of Cyprus, but there’s a lot more to it (but you can party if you like).

It has budget-friendly holidays, the comparatively short travel time — roughly five hours from the UK.

With On the Beach you can stay at the Makronisos Village which is a colourful village-style resort with pools, palm trees and easy beach access.

November

Descending further into winter means heading further afield – if guaranteed heat and activities like sea snorkelling is on your hit list then head to Egypt.

Sharm El Sheikh has been described as the “forgotten winter sun destination” but it’s is ideal for winter sun as it rarely drops below 20C, even in December and January.

Rob recommends the Falcon Hills Hotel which has two outdoor pools, kids club and spa.

Rob adds: “Falcon Hills is a low-key winner – think big pools, friendly staff and easy access to coral reefs that’ll blow your flippers off.”

December

As for December, Rob said: “End the year in style in Dubai temperatures of 28C, beach clubs, rooftop cocktails, and it’s way cheaper than you’d expect if you book early.

“And seeing as we’re in Dubai for this one, let’s go big with the hotel too.”

Head to the Hampton by Hilton Marjan Island for a truly luxurious stay on Al Margan Island.

All rooms have either a sea or island view, there’s an elevated infinity pool with views of the Arabian Gulf, plenty of on-site restaurants where you can get barbecue to Pan-Asian style food.

There’s plenty to keep kids entertained, as well as the adults with a kitted out fitness centre, plenty of treatment rooms for massages and evening entertainment.

After having your bags taken to your room, and arriving at the self-same entrance the Lionesses use, you already feel like a superstar ready to give the social media intern a fist bump and grab a Lucozade for an extra energy boost.

You’ll need it present when you sign your contract and pose for a polaroid photo, commemorating the day you joined up with the squad for the first time. 

Once you’re all signed on, it’s up to ‘Suite Caroline’, with a red carpet leading you into a real footballing paradise of a room.

Don’t fancy a movie? Load up the PS5 and whack open FC26 to take on your rivals for the day overlooking the very pitches where Bellingham and co. rifle shots into the top corners in training.

As part of the stay, guests will enjoy player-inspired meals at the hotel (more on that later) and will have an exclusive opportunity to train like their favourite players, with a training session at the National Football Centre, led by experienced FA coaches.

So, as Sun Sport’s answer to Cole Palmer, I was escorted by buggy to Hilton’s St George’s Park pitch, changed into my boots, and got ready to put my skills to the test.

It’s safe to say the coach didn’t go easy on me, and as someone who has watched the world’s best train, he knew how to put me through my paces.

Gone were the days of a lap of the pitch, this was an intense, on-ball session that tested my passing, dribbling, first-touch, and of course, my shooting.

Exhausted, sweaty, and grateful to my coach for the day, I’d earned my shower, a bit of time to decompress and some recovery time.

I wasn’t sure, however, that I’d earned a shower THIS nice, in such a stunning bathroom.

Perfectly lit, with a range of soaps in smells and flavours that could only be concocted by a botanist, the rainfall shower kept me enclosed for way longer than planned.

I was helped by the fact that I was provided with a high-end Bluetooth speaker for a sing-along that was England international initiation worthy – Price Tag by Jessie J if you must know.

Refreshed and rejuvenated, in the best of spirits – dinner called for just that, the best of spirits – this time in the form of a glass of white wine.

Available is a myriad of food options, perfect whether you’re an aspiring pro player looking to load up on protein for recovery, or if you’re well past it and fancy the well-earned taste of local meats cooked to perfection.

I opted for a ‘powerhouse striker‘s’ choice, a grilled fillet of beef with roasted garlic mash and glazed baby vegetables with red wine jus – though it must be said the Captain’s Chicken Goujons on the Junior Kick Off almost tempted me in.

After heading back to my room to watch GOAL! in the outdoor cinema, I enjoyed a peaceful night’s sleep in a huge, cosy bed and dreamt a little more of linking up with Cole Palmer to score the winner in the World Cup Final for England next summer. 

The next morning bought the kind of recovery the England stars get to enjoy regularly, with use of the on-site gym, spa, and pool – used by a range of England teams when they stay on-site. 

An 11am check-out meant it was time to return to my reality of being a sports journalist rather than being one of the stars I spend so long writing about, but I was glad to finally know how it must feel to be one of the most talented in the country at something.

The suite is the latest in Hilton’s ‘Stay Like’ specials, inviting guests to relax like their favourite stars in immersive suites.

The ‘Stay like a footballer’ experience is available on selected dates from November-January 2026 for £650 (for four).

Previous suites have included Stay Like Wicked at the New York Hilton Midtown, the Stay Like An Infinite Icon at the Beverly Hilton in LA, and the Stay Like McLaren Racing at The Trafalgar St James’ in London.

Talking of themed stays, Head of Sun Travel Lisa Minot checked into the UK’s coolest hotel room – with racing simulators, a cocktail bar AND you can take the dressing gown home.

A TINY station in Northumberland that was closed from the 1960s until last year, has been crowned ‘Britain’s most life-changing station.’

It beat 330 stations across the country for the award – known as ‘The World Cup Of Train Stations,’ and the town itself also has a rich celebrity past from sportsmen to actors.

‘The World Cup Of Stations’ was launched in honour of 200 years of railways in Britain, to bring attention to the stories behind the stations and how much they’ve changed and brought communities together.

Ashington train station, up the road from Newcastle upon Tyne, opened in December last year as part of the restoration of the Northumberland Line.

It was shut due to Beeching cuts to the railway in the 1960s which resulted in the closure of thousands of stations, but Ashington has made a mighty comeback.

Ashington competed against 330 nominations, which were whittled down to 20 by a judging panel.

It stood against the likes of Liverpool Lime Street, London Paddington, London Waterloo, Vauxhall and York.

In just over five days, over 24,000 people voted, with Ashington being one of the country’s newest stations in the shortlist.

Trains started running between Newcastle and Ashington in December last year, and it’s not even finished yet as additional stations along the line are set to open next year.

Jacqueline Starr, Rail Delivery Group chief executive officer said: “As we celebrate 200 years of rail history, Ashington shows how investing in stations can transform lives linking people to opportunity, pride, and possibility.”

The Northumberland Line was one of many to be axed as part of the Beeching cuts to the railway in the 1960s but was brought back as part of a £298.5 million redevelopment project.

Ashington sits 15 miles north of Newcastle, close to the coast and was once centre of the coal mining industry.

It was the birthplace of some of Britain’s biggest sporting stars like Bobby and Jack Charlton, who were both part of the England national team that won the 1966 World Cup against West Germany.

Jackie Milburn, also born in Ashington and went on to be one of the most legendary players for Newcastle United.

Cricketing brothers Steve and Ben Harmison were born there, and after retiring from cricket, Steve managed his hometown football club in Ashington.

The TV and actor and popstar Robson Green hails from the town too – going on star in top shows like Casualty, Soldier Soldier and more recently, Grantchester.

The top things to do in Ashington on Tripadvisor include exploring the Woodhorn Museum which is based on the town’s mining history.

Inside is memorabilia, gallery exhibitions and trinkets from the days it operated as a mining hub.

It’s known for having lots of woodland and green spaces too which you can see by visiting the Queen Elizabeth II Country Park, or taking a walk around the Wansbeck Riverside Park.

On Tuesdays, Ashington holds a market where sellers sell all sorts from food to clothing and gifts.

The town is very close to Newcastle, which is a 30 minute drive away, or along the Northumberland Line, a 48 minute train journey.

It’s not all towns and cities, Ashington is minutes from the coastline with some of the nearest beaches in neighbouring Newbiggin-by-the-Sea.

The small seaside town has a north, south and east beach where you’ll spot a fleet of traditional fishing boats – but the coastline is a great spot for paddling in the summer and rock pooling.

Newbiggin is also known to be one of Britain’s most budget-friendly seaside resort.

At the seaside town, you can get a bargain ice cream at Caffe Bertorelli and cheap pints at The Coble pub.

Ashington is near Cresswell Beach too, a sandy spot known for being dog-friendly and a starting point for the Northumberland Coastal Path.

Another great beach is Druridge Bay which has rugged coastline, a seven-mile beach, sand dunes and is popular for activities like birdwatching and horse riding.

These beaches might be about to get even more popular as this year, Northumberland beaches became one of the world’s trending destinations.

The northern county of Northumberland has been getting lots of attention over the summer, with plenty of pretty beaches that are usually less busy than those in the south.

Airbnb said: “Northumberland is drawing more summer visitors, with searches up over 50 per cent this summer, thanks to its pristine North Atlantic beaches.”

These include Embleton Bay, Low Newton-by-the-Sea and the seaside town of Bamburgh.

Writer Jenna Stevens headed up to Newcastle for the opening of the UK’s first Greggs pub…

When I heard that Greggs were opening a pub, my first thought was “a Greggs sausage roll and a pint in one place? Sign me up!”

But what I wasn’t expecting to find at The Golden Flake Tavern was a traditional, homely pub with an impressive menu that could take on the best of boozers.

The room was decked out with local art, a jukebox, board games and cosy booths. From branded Golden Flake coasters and napkins, to a framed painting of Geordie legends Ant and Dec.

Newcastle is the birthplace of Greggs, so it’s only fitting that the pub has opened in its city centre.

The Golden Flake Tavern’s menu is loaded with Greggs’ best-loved bakes, reimagined as pub dishes.

I opted for the Greggs pub staple: the Sausage Roll and Mash and was wowed by the dish’s posh presentation. The sausage roll had been sliced in half and carefully propped up against the mash like a Michelin star meal.

I tried the Gosforth 1939 Stottie Lager (£6.50) – a beer named with Greggs’ history in mind – and all cocktails are priced at £11.50.

The Golden Flake Tavern is open daily from 11am – 7pm at Fenwick Newcastle. And you need to visit soon as the pub is open to visitors until February 2026.

Plus, these two huge cities north of London have been tipped for direct trains to Europe.

WHILE the UK threatens to be a washout, we’ve found the place in the Mediterranean least likely to have rain in October.

The place in question is the Algarve in Portugal, and the best news is that Brits can be there in less than three hours and flights cost as little as £15 for a one-way ticket, even during half-term.

The Algarve in Portugal is the driest place in the country thanks to its Mediterranean climate that’s influenced by dry winds from the northeast and hot air from the Sahara.

During October temperatures in the Algarve range from 15C all the way to 23C.

The southern spot has between seven and eight hours of sunshine a day on average, throughout the month.

Next week, during October half-term, Brits can fly to Faro, also known as the ‘gateway of the Algarve’ from Birmingham, Liverpool, Bristol, Newcastle, London Stansted and Glasgow from £15 with Ryanair.

So here’s where Sun Travel suggests you explore next…

Albufeira

One of the most well-known spots in the region is the coastal city of Albufeira with sandy beaches and a lively nightlife strip.

Believe it or not, Albufeira was a former fishing village, and despite all the built up areas, there’s still an old town to explore.

Some of the best beaches are Praia dos Pescadores’, also known as Fisherman’s Beach, and Praia da Falésia.

There’s also a busy marina, and visitors can take boat trips out for dolphin-watching and exploring the Benagil Caves.

Albufeira is popular with tourists, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing as you’ll find plenty of hotels, waterparks, restaurants and bars.

However, if you’re looking to escape the tourist traps one local suggested heading just outside of Albufeira to the fishing village of Olhos de Água.

Angela Antor, who is a watermelon farmer told Sun Travel: “There you can enjoy a nice evening drink and watch the sun go down whilst the fisherman take to the sea.

“And in the traditional village of Ferragudo you can enjoy the catch of the day in riverside restaurants straight from the fishing boats.”

Faro

Faro is the capital of southern Portugal’s Algarve and is considered the ‘gateway’ region.

Deputy Travel Editor Kara Godfrey visited Faro, and discovered very few tourists. She added: “Most people skip Faro to head further into the Algarve.

“But there are some fantastic islands just off the coast where you will see barely any tourists. Ilha Deserta, also known as Barreta, takes just 20 minutes by boat, with tickets a few euros.

“Some call it the Caribbean of Portugal – something I agree with thanks to its golden sandy beaches. There is nothing on the island apart from the fabulous restaurant Estamine – a must visit serving up locally caught food”.

Other highlights in Faro include the 18th-century Capela Dos Ossos on Largo do Carmo within the walled city.

Translated as the Chapel of Bones, the ancient walls are decorated with pieces from over 1,250 human skeletons.

As for the best beach, Kara said: “Praia de Faro, on the island Ilha de Faro, is considered the best beach in the Faro region by locals, but few tourists have heard of it.

“The gold sands stretch for five kilometres with views of the sea on one side and a natural park on the other.”

Lagos

Lagos has become one of the most visited cities in the Algarve, mostly thanks to the number of tourist-friendly beaches.

Some of the most popular are Praia de Dona Ana, Ponta da Piedade and Praia do Camilo.

Sun Travel chatted to some locals about the Algarve and Ana Veiga, travel and food writer and the co-founder of We Travel Portugal, said: “Lagos is a brilliant town that has long attracted surfers to the west Algarve, but recently has become a prime destination for visitors of all types.

“It has incredible hiking trails, water and beach sports, and a historic old town to explore, plus its proximity to the west Algarve is great for explorers that want to see the wild coastline with cliffs and big waves.”   

Salem Haire, who lives in Lagos, said: “Pomò La Pasta Italiana has the best Italian food – people will wait more than two hours to eat there (speciality mains from €19), and there’s a local Portuguese kitchen called Tasca de Lota that’s my personal favourite (mains from €11 and bottles of wine from €13).

“Also in Lagos, Go Bao has delicious bao buns for those who are tired of Portuguese food (buns from €5), and Gelicia has amazing Italian gelato, with vegan and gluten free options too.”

Portimao 

Portimão is the second-largest city in the Algarve so there’s plenty to explore, like beaches such as Praia da Rocha – a lively resort town.

It’s known for having a vast sandy beach with water sports, as well as lots of restaurants and bars.

Inês Tito, a Portugal and Algarve trip planner, said: “Portimão, near the Praia De Rocha, is the perfect place for beach holidays. There are plenty of accommodation options, some only a few steps from the beach, so you won’t have any issue in finding a place to stay.

As for places to stay, Inês said: “Or the Bela Vista Hotel & Spa – Relais & Châteaux in Portimão is a beautiful boutique hotel set in a 19th palace overlooking Praia da Rocha.”

Silves

Silves doesn’t have beaches as it’s inland, but there’s still plenty to do, and last year it was named one of the cheapest places to visit.

The city used to be the capital of the Algarve, and it’s around an hour away from Faro.

It’s a great place for an affordable break, with the average price of a hotel being around £73, while a beer can cost as little as £2.50.

In Silves, you’ll find cobbled streets with independent shops selling gifts, and ceramics, and plenty of cafes.

Compared to the other destinations in the Algarve, Silves is likely to be quieter than the others.

WHEN Brits think of Costa Blanca, the places that come to mind are probably rowdy Benidorm and busy Alicante.

But one woman revealed to Sun Travel that the “jewel” of that coastline is actually the small town of Moraira.

It has all the best bits of Spain like white-washed houses with terracotta tiles, sandy beaches with bright blue waters, and a little harbour filled with boats and yachts.

While lots of holidaymakers like to mix up the places they visit each year, the Sun’s Jade Dadalica and her family have been returning to the town of Moraira, several times a year since 2021.

Jade explained: “My family and I go one or twice a year for around two weeks. We went on holiday to Jávea which is a nearby town and went for a day trip to Moraira, which we actually preferred.

“We booked a villa there the following year and have been going back ever since. A lot of the Spanish go on their holidays there, and you only get a few Brits, it’s not rowdy at all.

“We love it, if I won the lottery, the first thing I would do is buy a place there.”

While Moraira might not have everything that a busy city does, the laidback town still has plenty to offer.

Jade added: “It’s got loads of restaurants, bars, shops, ice cream parlours, and Ale-Hop of course. There’s a market once a week too, that sells everything from clothes and souvenirs to fruit and veg, a lot of locals go and it’s always really busy.

“One of my favourite places to eat is what my family call the ‘windy bar’, but it’s actually called El Cafeti de la Mar. From there you can see the sea and the castle and we love it. We go so much that the owners know who we are.

“It’s always popular with locals, especially in the mornings because they go for breakfast there. But lunch and dinner are amazing too.”

On its menu, El Cafeti de la Mar serves up simple breakfast croissants, bagels, crepes, and Huevos Benedict.

There’s plenty of tapas to choose from, as well as mains in the evenings from salads, to fish dishes, burgers, ribs and steak.

Another of Jade’s favourites is a spot literally called The Secret Bar where you can sip on classic cocktails like margaritas and blueberry daiquiris.

Other places that Jade recommended are La Malquerida, a Mexican restaurant and The Ribs Bar, which has speciality dishes of ribs, steaks and kebabs.

Once you’ve filled your stomach, why not stretch out on the beach for an afternoon siesta – and Moraira has a few playas to choose from.

The main beach in Moraira is Playa de l’Ampolla but when Jade is on holiday, she goes around the corner to Playa del Portet.

Jade said: “The main beach is sandy and is always quite busy because it’s the one the locals use. We go to one on the other side, Playa del Portet, it’s a little less known, so we go out there and hire paddleboards.”

If you want to venture out of the town, then it’s an easy vantage point to take daytrips too.

Jade told us: “From Moraira, you can get to a town called Calp, which isn’t far at all. There are also some waterfalls, called Fonts de l’Algar, which are under an hour’s drive away.

“You have to buy tickets, but these are €8 (£6.95) during the summer, and €6 (£5.21) during off peak, for the whole day. You can go swimming, or climb up the waterfalls, it’s a great place for pictures.

“Of course, Moraira is close to Benidorm, which is funny because it really doesn’t feel like it. We drive down that way to go to the waterpark called Aqualandia for a family day out.”

If you think that it’s too late in the year to take a break to the Moraira to get good weather, you’d be wrong.

In October, it still has highs of 19C and next week during half-term, you can get flights to Alicante, which is the closest airport, for as little as £14.

Ryanair offers one-way direct flights from London Stansted, Bristol, Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham for under £15.

Although if you do book for half-term hoping to visit Aqualandia, it has closed for the season and will reopen in May 2026.

Jade told us: “I went to Moraira in late September and the weather was still really warm. You can still go on the beach, I even got sunburnt. We always go in September and June which are quieter because it’s out of school holiday time.

“It’s not like other places across Spain which close when the tourists leave either. My dad was speaking to owners of the local bars and they’re open all year round.”

There’s a self-catering kitchen available to lower meal costs even further if you’re using this as a budget base to explore the Wales Coast Path, which runs in front of the hostel.

A glamping pod for four starts at £40, while camping using your own equipment is £10 per person.

It’s ironic that this beach has remained under the radar, given its past use as a Ministry of Defence site.

The striking hostel exterior remains in keeping with its military roots, while the inside is clean and cosy after a refurb ten years ago.

Clambering down the steep steps from the clifftop to Church Doors Cove, my boys and I were wowed by the incredible rock formation that gives this beach its name.

If you’re looking for something similar to the famous Durdle Door in Dorset, but without another soul in sight, this spot is for you. 

The cove is connected to neighbouring Skrinkle Haven beach by a narrow tunnel through the headland, only passable at low tide.

We took a picnic to enjoy on the deserted golden sands of the bay before exploring caves that would be perfect for smugglers to stash their loot.

It really was like stepping into the pages of an Enid Blyton story, with a crumbling stairway no longer in use at one end of the beach and the narrow tunnel that fills with water at high tide at the other.

Time and tide wait for no man and if you’re cut off by the rising waters, you’ll be stranded here until the next low tide.

Walking three and a half hours east on the coastal path, you’ll find the gorgeous town of Tenby, with its colourful houses and beautiful beaches.

Keep the Famous Five vibe alive by visiting St Catherine’s Fort perched on a rocky outcrop on the beach or taking a boat trip to Caldey Island, home to Cistercian monks and a colony of puffins.

There’s a neolithic burial chamber known as King’s Quoit along the Pembrokeshire coastal path west of the hostel, so you’re surrounded by spots straight out of a Secret Seven story whichever direction you take as you step out of the front door.

If you’re not a fan of hostels and want to stay somewhere a bit more upmarket, there’s some great family options in easy reach of Skrinkle Haven. 

Haven’s Kiln Park is just a 10-minute drive away, with caravans sleeping six starting at £129 during October halfterm, while a three-bed lodge is £670.

It’s got its own Blue Flag beach on the doorstep and lots of kids activities, including sessions with a nature ranger.

For luxe lodgings, try Bluestone Resort, within a half hour drive.

Bluestone is the Welsh answer to Center Parcs and has lodges starting at £760 over halfterm. 

There’s a huge indoor soft play, outdoor activities and an amphitheatre under the glass Serendome and the Blue Lagoon water park, all included in the price.

We loved our meal at Camp Smokey, a hideaway hut down in a wooded valley that offers alfresco meals and family fun.

Bilbao, Spain

For easily accessible winter warmth on a shoestring budget, Bilbao is a good bet. 

This is the Spanish city that is the fastest to reach from the UK, with flights from Bristol taking approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes (and under two hours from London).

It’s also super affordable to reach – one-way Gatwick fares with Vueling Airlines start at just £23 this autumn. 

Step off the plane and into double-digit temperatures – the city has highs of 17C in November, ideal for exploring the lush green landscape and Casco Viejo, the picturesque old town with its cobblestone streets and medieval architecture.

You can’t visit without indulging in pintxos – the Basque version of tapas – paired with the local tipple Kalimotxo (red wine and cola). 

Cheap but highly-rated pintxos bars include local hangout Bar Bacaicoa, known for its griddled mushrooms, £1.13 (€1.30), cod croquettes, £1.50 (€1.70), and spicy chorizo. £1.65 (€1.90).

Beer at a restaurant or pub is also cheaper than in the UK, with a “zurrito” (small glass) of local beer like San Miguel costing around £3.50 (€4).  

The world-famous Guggenheim art museum is the city’s main attraction, home to popular works by artists such as Richard Serra, Robert Rauschenberg and Yayoi Kusama.

Although you need a ticket to enter, it’s completely free to admire the outdoor art installations, such as Jeff Koons’s Instagrammable Puppy sculpture guarding the entrance.

Dublin, Ireland

Close to home, Dublin offers a quick city getaway with affordable prices if you know where to look. 

Flights from most UK airports are very short, taking just an hour from Manchester and 1 hour 20 minutes from London.

November is the cheapest month to travel to Ireland – return fares to Dublin cost around £36 with Ryanair from the East Midlands and £72 from Heathrow with British Airways.

This leaves extra spending money for its lively pub culture.

The typical price range for a pint of Guinness in city boozers – like O’Donoghue’s, Doheny & Nesbitt’s, Toners and The Baggot Inn – is similar to the UK’s national average of £5.15 (€5.80-€7.00), depending on location. 

Tourist hotspots like Temple Bar push prices to £9 (€10.45) for a pint of the black stuff. 

Avoid this by heading to a local boozer like The Auld Triangle, where a pint will set you back less than a fiver (€4.95).  

You’ll still get traditional live music at a slice of the price.

But there’s much more to Dublin than a giddy Guinness binge. 

Take in the city sights, including Phoenix Park and the grounds of Trinity College, both free to explore. 

If you’ve got a spare £16 (€18), the Little Museum of Dublin is also well worth a visit.

Set in a cute Georgian townhouse, it’s a quirky one-stop shop for history fans.

Peckish? Wood-fired pizza costs less than £6 (€6.50) from Sano Pizza, while other cheap eats include Brother Hubbard (mezze plates from €7.50) and street food at EatYard, which is open Thursday-Sunday. 

Brussels, Belgium

The capital of Belgium is within striking distance of the UK – super affordable flights take just over an hour.

One-way fares this November cost from as little as £33 from Luton with easyJet, with a flight time of 1 hour 20 minutes. 

You can find even cheaper flights to the city’s second airport, Charleroi, which is around an hour from the city centre by bus. 

The city’s main highlights – including the magnificent Grand Place, Sablon’s Gothic church and the famed Manneken Pis statue – are walkable and free to see. 

You can keep costs down by visiting museums on reduced admission days.

For instance, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium (normally €10) are free on the first Wednesday of each month from 1pm.

Sample gaufres de Liège (waffles), frites (fries) and Belgian chocolate – but find them at street food stalls, trucks and small cafés for the best price.

Maison Antoine sells a small cone of fries for around £3 (€3.50), while many good chocolate shops give out free samples.

When it comes to beer, avoid tourist trap bars around Grand Place and head to local boozers instead. 

Beer Capital has beers from £2.87 (€3.30), and happy hour from noon until midnight, while Cafe Belga is a firm favourite with students. 

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

With its quaint canals, treasure-packed museums and vibrant dining scene, Amsterdam is perfect for a European city break. 

You can reach this Dutch metropolis in 1 hour and 20 minutes, with easyJet flights from Manchester costing as little as £67 return this winter.

Walking is the best way to see the city’s gorgeous neighbourhoods of Prinsengracht, Herengracht and Keizersgracht, and the trendy Nine Streets area with its independent boutiques.

Planning to see as much as possible? You could save money with the I Amsterdam card, which allows free entry to some museums, including the Van Gogh Museum (but not the Anne Frank House, which you need to book in advance), travel discounts and bicycle rent. A 48-hour card costs £78 (€90).

Grab a £2.61 (€3) beef croquette straight from the wall at FEBO, automated snack machines dotted around the city.

Or head to a street stall to sample Dutch herring with onions and pickles for around €3, or stop by a Stroopwafels stand for freshly made caramel-filled wafers.

Fancy a drink? De Pilsener Club is a cosy, wood-panelled pub and one of the best spots for a cheap beer in the city centre.

Meanwhile, Kriterion is a trendy arthouse cinema with a student bar offering cheap beer (around £4.54 a pint), while Waterhole has happy hour every day (noon-9pm) with beers from £3.48 (€4).  

Paris, France

Just 1 hour and 15 minutes from the UK by plane, Paris should make your budget-break bucket list. 

While the City of Love has its fair share of overpriced tourist traps, there are ways you can shave euros off the prices you pay.

Avoid eating and drinking around the city’s main attractions, like the Eiffel Tower, Louvre and Arc de Triomphe, where restaurants charge a premium.

Instead, head to neighbourhoods just outside the most central zones (like the 11th, 19th and 20th arrondissements) for cheaper bars and restaurants.

With the average Parisian pint, or ‘pinte’, costing £5.22-£6.96 (€6-8), your best bet for finding budget beer in Paris is to avoid tourist zones and look for happy hour. 

The cheapest pint in Paris is reportedly at Chez Marie in the 10th arrondissement – where you can enjoy a pint for £2.18 (€2.50) at happy hour (6-9pm).  

When it comes to top-notch food, the French do it well – and crêpes (pancakes) are both filling and good value. 

You can find street-side stands selling crêpes or eat them “à emporter” (to go) from around £3.48 (€4). 

For lunch on the run, locals grab sandwiches and quiches from boulangeries (bakeries).

Other cheap eats include croque monsieur (ham and cheese toastie), which costs around £6-£8 (€7-9). 

Other money-saving tips for Paris include taking the Metro instead of expensive taxis and visiting big museums like the Louvre and Musee d’Orsay on the first Sunday of the month, when they offer free admission.

You can also bag a bargain with flights – easyJet and Vueling offer one-way prices from as little as £24, with Fridays in November and March often offering the best results. 

San Sebastian, Spain

In the heart of Spain’s Basque Country, San Sebastian is a foodie’s delight that won’t break the bank.  

This city in the north of the country is home to amazing pintxos – tapas-style snacks that are small in price but huge in flavour.

Think olive and pepper skewers, chistorra (AKA smoky sausage), and traditional tortillas – with each dish typically costing less than £4 (around €2-€5).

A pint of beer typically costs around £5 (€5-7) in San Sebastian bars – but you can save money by ordering a smaller ‘caña’ (200ml draft beer), which is usually priced around £2.60 (€3). 

British Airways flies direct to San Sebastian from London City, with one-way fares from £120 this autumn.

And with a flight time of 1 hour 55 minutes, you’ll be exploring its golden beaches, lush hillsides and cobbled lanes before you know it. 

Even in winter, the weather can be pretty mild, with daytime temperatures rising to around 15 °C in November. 

Some of the cheapest pintxos are in the Gros District, a surfing neighbourhood that’s a 10-minute walk from the old town.

The best way to burn the pintxos-hopping calories is to explore on foot.  

Walk the scenic promenade along La Concha Bay or hike up Monte Urgull for epic city views that won’t cost you a penny.  

Prague, Czech Republic

A couple of hours from the UK by plane, Prague is a firm favourite as a European city break, with cheap food and pints costing a couple of quid.

Even in the centre of the Czech capital, a pint will only set you back around £1.70-2.50 (50-70CZK).

Head further out, and you can expect to pay just £1-1.78 (30-50CZK) for similar drinks. 

Hany Bany, a boozer in the city’s old town, sells a small draft beer for just 78p (22CZK) and a pint for £1.25 (35CZK).

Working up an appetite? Grab a plate of hearty goulash and dumplings for £4.20 (119CZK) at Havelská Koruna, which opened as the country’s first fast-food restaurant in 1931. 

Located in the old town, it’s a thriving and affordable diner, so arrive by 11.30am to beat the lunchtime crowds.

Save even more on your trip by sampling cheap street food at Havel Market and exploring the grounds of Prague Castle for free. 

For a culture fix, some museums have free or cheap entry days, like the National Gallery Prague, which is free to enter on the first Wednesday of the month after 3pm. 

In the Old Town Square, you can also watch the Astronomical Clock’s hourly dancing figurine show without spending a single koruna.

Return flights from London to Prague this winter cost from £34 with Ryanair, from £44 with Wizz Air and from £57 with easyJet. 

Bordeaux, France

Also under two hours from the UK, the French city of Bordeaux offers cheap wine, local markets and a UNESCO area to discover. 

It’s also affordable to reach, with easyJet offering return Bristol flights from £44 this winter.

While a pint of beer will set you back around £6 (€7) in most central bars in Bordeaux, wine is inexpensive. 

In Le Bar à Vin Bordeaux, located opposite the tourism office, you can get glasses of decent wine for less than £3 – like a 15cl glass of Bordeaux rose for €2.50.

Meanwhile, you can keep costs low by chowing down street food near Place de la Victoire, or indulging in “canelés”.

These sweet, cylindrical pastries are typically priced less than a euro – La Toque Cuivrée sells them for a mere 60p (€0.70).

When you’ve eaten and drunk your fill, take in the historic centre and 18th-century architecture – a UNESCO World Heritage site.

It won’t cost you a penny to see sights like Place de la Bourse with its beautiful reflecting pool of water. 

Later, find souvenirs at the Grands Hommes market or on the rue Sainte Catherine, one of the longest streets in Bordeaux.

If you’re on a tight budget, pick up a steal in Mad Vintage, a second-hand shop, or head to the southern end of the street, which has cheaper, more student-oriented boutiques compared to the higher-end shops of the north. 

Munich, Germany

The Bavarian capital is under two hours away, with return Gatwick flights costing from just £59 with easyJet this winter. 

Which leaves plenty of spending money once you touch down in this edgy metropolis, which has lakes and mountains on its doorstep and oodles of cultural sights. 

Contemporary gallery Museum Brandhorst is a must if you enjoy pop art, and is one of many museums that offer cheap entry for 87p (€1) on Sundays.

Other free must-do activities include watching the famed Glockenspiel show in Marienplatz and strolling around the lush grass and shimmering lake of the English Garden.

Of course, Munich is the beer capital, so it’d be rude not to sample the city’s tipple of choice, Dunkel, which ranks among the best German beers.

TOURISTS and holidaymakers have been warned to stay away from the world’s most famous Bonfire Night this year amid safety fears.

The advice has been issued by a multi-agency group, including police, ahead of the popular annual celebration.

The group behind the Lewes Bonfire have called for the public not to attend unless they live locally, with trains axed and roads shut.

Dubbed the bonfire capital of the world, the town of Lewes holds the world-famous event each year.

As part of the torch-lit procession, the societies also push a giant effigy of a controversial figure through the town’s streets.

Last year, a depiction of Nigel Farage, holding a pint and a cigarette, was paraded through the streets.

The procession attracts thousands of visitors with transport, accommodation and even drinks difficult to come by on the big night. 

The event begins with a torch-led procession, before bonfires are held across the town.

Firework displays are also conducted towards the end of the evening.

Ahead of the event on November 5, a multi-agency group has issued a series of advice for the public.

Transport restrictions

Transport restrictions are also being put in place to prevent visitors from attending the event.

In a statement, the group, which includes Sussex Police and the British Transport Police, said: “We ask that you do not attend Lewes Bonfire unless you are local because the crowds and narrow streets can present unique safety challenges.

“The decision to bring in travel restrictions has been made in the best interests of safety, by limiting the number of people attending.

“It is hoped that those who are inconvenienced will understand that and have time to make alternative arrangements where possible.

“It is recognised this will impact motorists and train passengers who are not planning to attend the event.”

Locals have been reacting to the news on Facebook.

One said: “Lewes is in lockdown for the bonfire, so you can’t get there.”

Another posted: “The more you tell someone not to do it the more they do.”

For the last several hundred years, Lewes Bonfire has taken place in the small Sussex town.

The event marks both Guy Fawkes Night and the memory of 17 martyrs from the town who were burnt at the stake for their religious beliefs.

There are thought to be more than 3,000 bonfire society members who take part in the procession each year, while up to 80,000 people have been known to watch the town’s parade.

The population of Lewes town is just more than 17,000.

A series of road closures will also be in place from 4.45pm on November 5, with residents advised to get any vehicles to their homes before 4pm to avoid disruption.

From 5pm that day, no trains will stop at Lewes, Falmer, Cooksbridge, Glynde and Southease.

All day entry for the Playhive (an hour and a half slot), and the Adventure Park start from £23.50pp.

From October 25 to November 2, there’s a Halloween event where the park is open all day, with tickets from £13pp.

During the Halloween event, kids can take a tractor ride and pick their own pumpkin, and explore the adventure playgrounds in the Enchanted Forest.

Take a look around the Monster Maze, enjoy Zombie Laser sessions, adventure through the Playhive, ride the Flying Stocksman.

Play Factore, Manchester

Play Factore is the ‘UK’s largest indoor family entertainment arena for parties and play’, and better yet, it’s open every day of the week between 10am and 6pm.

Inside is the tallest standing indoor slide in the UK, an indoor laser tag arena, interactive ValoJump trampolines and a zip wire.

Other facilities include a built-in football pitch, racing simulator, or for the smaller children, there’s a specially designed play area for toddlers.

The big red slide inside Play Factore is the tallest indoor slide in the country and is 131feet high.

Inside the arcade are retro games as well as air hockey, whack-a-mole and even racing bikes.

General admission tickets into Play Factore for kids aged between 5-16 range between £16.95-£20.95.

Children aged between six and 11 years old can enter from £3.95, and tickets for adults are £5.25.

You have to book into a session which is between 10am-12pm, 12.30pm-3pm and 3.30pm-6pm – which you can do online.

Riverside Hub, Northamptonshire

Riverside Hub just outside of Northampton is often described as being ‘every parent’s dream’ because it literally has everything for a family day out.

Think soft play, sensory rooms, go-karting, laser tag, room for role-play and the largest playframe in the UK.

The playframe is one of the most popular attractions and is set across various heights with nets for climbing and big slides for coming back down.

Inside is also a beanstalk climbing wall, or smaller oak tree suitable for smaller children, or beginners.

There are also areas just for toddlers which have a ball pool, activity wall and dolphin carousel.

Entry is £7.95 for adults, £16.95 for children between four and 17, and £13.96 for little ones aged between one and three. Babies under 12 months old can enter for £6.

You can save money by visiting during off-peak times, which is before 2PM on Monday to Friday, or get 40 per cent off if you visit after 2PM Monday to Thursday.

The Riverside Hub is open from Monday to Friday between 10am and 6.30pm.

On Saturdays, it’s open between 9.15AM and 7.30PM, and on Sunday it opens at the same time, but closes one hour earlier.

Woodlands, Devon

There’s plenty to do at Woodlands considering that it’s Devon’s largest theme park.

When it rains, it boasts a huge indoor area five floors of adventure play with slides, rope bridges, swings and even rides.

Inside is a Ferris Wheel ride, a drop tower and another where children will be on small submarines.

For thrills, there’s a six-lane racing slide called Barracuda, or there’s another that drops 40 feet.

The Ice Palace is an area for smaller children with soft play, ball pools and slides.

On the middle floor is Rays Diner which serves snacks, and hot and cold drinks.

Plus, when the rain stops, families can head back out to ride the tornado toboggan run, drive the buggies and zoom down the rapid waterslide.

Tickets for Woodlands theme park start from £16.50 per person, with offers for families and money off depending on peak or off-peak timings.

Flip Out, Leeds

There are 33 Flip Outs in the UK, but the one in Leeds is the biggest, and it’s just opened.

The entire site is 100,000 square feet and filled with 150 trampolines and 14 other attractions, like an enormous inflatable obstacle course with a climbing wall and slide.

Kids can also explore a multi-storey Ninja Playground, a drift bike arena, roller disco, soft play, arcade area, or even play a game of dodgeball.

There’s a zipline which travels from one side of the trampoline arena to the other.

Inside is a dedicated ‘Slide World’, which as the name suggests, means it’s filled with slides.

For kids seeking thrills, there’s the space-themed Laser Quest, and for smaller children, there’s a toddler soft play area.

After building up an appetite, visitors can take a seat and get a bite to eat from burgers, nachos, hot dogs, pizza, toasties, cold drinks and hot drinks – even cocktails, beer and wine for the adults.

A standard ticket for Flip Out with access to Slide World and all the attractions starts from £16.95 – there are discounts and family passes available too.

“As seasoned soft play samplers, my boys thought they had seen it all – until I took them to family favourite Riverside Hub in Northampton to check out the UK’s largest playframe, set over four floors.

“You know you’re onto a winner when your tween’s eyes light up in wonder and you hardly see your children from the moment you arrive until home time.

“With three boys aged between five and 12, it can sometimes be difficult to find somewhere that has enough to keep all ages happy as the older two are getting a bit big for soft play, but that certainly wasn’t a problem here. 

“Laser tag, crazy golf, two climbing poles, go-karts and even arcade machines all included in the price. The main issue is keeping an eye on all your children as they head off in opposite directions to make the most of everything on offer.

“While the youngest was taking a spin on the carousel, my middle son was clambering up the two 10m climbing poles, one in the shape of an oak tree and the other a beanstalk, in the centre of the hub.

“There’s a mezzanine floor with extra seating that’s perfect for cheering your little climbers on as they get to the top. And you’ll also find a fantasy village playground up there for youngsters to enjoy. 

“Downstairs, my sons really loved being able to take on the free arcade machines that would be pay per play elsewhere. And the go-karts were a big hit too, with short queue times despite how busy the venue was.

“Riverside Hub was certainly a revelation and lived up to its reputation. We will be back!”

ONE of Yorkshire’s prettiest towns is set for superstardom this December, as it stars in a new Christmas film featuring some of Hollywood’s top actors.

Earlier this year, Hollywood stars like Kiefer Sutherland, Rebel Wilson and EastEnders‘ Danny Dyer descended on Knaresborough for the upcoming movie, Tinsel Town.

Between January and February 2025, cast and crew were spotted in the Yorkshire town, in areas like Castlegate, Riverside, and Green Dragon Yard.

Filming of the Sky Original Christmas movie meant that the festive decorations were up for months longer than usual.

The film, set to be released n November 28, will see Kiefer Sutherland play Bradley Mack, a failed Hollywood action star ending up in a small, snow-dusted village to star in the town’s eccentric production of Cinderella.

It’s here that he encounters a number of oddball locals, one of whom is no-nonsense choreographer Jill, played by Rebel Wilson.

It’s no wonder Knaresborough was picked as a filming location, as The Sun’s Katrina Turrill, who hails from the town, reckons it’s the “most beautiful town in the country” and “picture perfect”.

Knaresborough has pretty waterfront cafes and the opportunity to canoe down the river, while watching steam trains travel over the viaduct.

Katrina said: “If you venture down by the river from either Bond End or walking down the steps at the castle you’ll stand at the foot of the iconic viaduct. 

“Amongst the cafes and houses are two boat hire places – Blenkhorn’s and Marigold Cafe & Boating.  Both are open daily, weather permitting, and are a great way to soak up the stunning scenery.

“No visit to Knaresborough is complete without heading to Knaresborough Castle for the best view of the viaduct. 

“You don’t need to pay to enter the castle grounds, and I recommend seeing the view during the day and at night time, with the viaduct all lit up.”

Katrina also suggested checking out the many pubs in the area from Blind Jack’s in the market square, to Carriages.

As for attractions, there’s Mother Shipton’s Cave which is named after the Yorkshire prophetess who predicted many things, including the great fire of London and the black death.

It’s also the oldest tourist attraction to charge a fee in England, and has been open to visitors since 1630.

The town is also lobbying for cash to buy a tourist land train, which would mean visitors could easily go exploring without having to climb steep hills and steps.

A previous grant to get a land train was rejected due to “concerns over the scheme’s viability”, as reported by the BBC.

Now, the Knaresborough & District Chamber, which submitted the bid, is looking for alternative funding to get the service started.

The hope is that the land train would increase the number of visitors to all of Knaresborough, from the river to the main town.

One of the local council members told the BBC that visitors who visit usually wander around the castle and marketplace but don’t go down to the river because of the steep hill and steps.

If the land train becomes a reality, it would join other UK towns which run services generally during the summer.

Weymouth has its very own land train which runs across the promenade, meanwhile Bridlington has two trains, one which heads north, and the other, south.

Other popular destinations with land trains include Hull, Torquay, Hunstanton and Scarborough – each charges between £2-£6 per journey.

Hutton-Le-Hole is said to be one of the last unspoiled villages in the UK, thanks to its very quaint houses and attractions.

Home to just 400 locals, it has been named one of Yorkshire‘s “best looking villages” by Lonely Planet, as well as one of the UK’s prettiest by Conde Nast Traveller.

Jane Austen fans will recognise it, having featured in the Death Comes To Pemberley BBC drama.

In the summer, locals sit on the village green, with the sloped grass leading into the river to cool off.

But the village is just as beautiful in autumn with the trees turning bright orange.

Most of the sheep are free-roaming, so expect to see a few munching on the grass.

If you fancy some retail therapy, The Chocolate Factory, which opened 20 years ago, is one of the top attractions.

Despite being small, there are a number of places you can stay like The Crown Inn and The Barn Guesthouse or a number of small B&Bs.

Here’s another Yorkshire village that looks like it is from the 18th century – where every front door is the same colour.

Plus, the pretty English town that attracts thousands of tourists a year with iconic shops and cosy barn stays.

A few months later and I’m driving our family of five on the Atlantic Ocean Road, ticking off Storseisundet Bridge from my bucket list. 

The name might not be familiar but you’ve probably seen the bizarre, twisty structure in photos — or perhaps in James Bond film No Time To Die. 

It is the longest of eight bridges on the five-mile highway, which connects a chain of tiny islands. 

Search for it on Google Maps and it looks like the road simply runs over water.

The perfect place for families – with waterslides, fairground rides and fun

To soak it in, almost literally, we stopped to hike along a coastal path and then over a pedestrian bridge, with the fierce ocean lapping just a short distance below. 

“Ooh, this is a bit Top Gear!” said my wife as we then continued our drive, through a succession of dramatic bends. She wasn’t wrong. 

Norway’s north-west coast is a seriously fun place to drive. 

We’d borrowed an electric Polestar 4 car, which was very much at home in a country where electric vehicles now outnumber petrol motors. 

It’s much sportier and roomier than our own family car, and packed with 007-style features. 

At one point the display flashed “Front radar blocked”, prompting my ten-year-old to speculate that the weapons system had been disabled.

Less excitingly, it was just dirt on an external camera. Audible speeding alerts were welcome, given most roads had a modest 50mph limit. 

The drive from Alesund to mountaineering capital Andalsnes includes a long coastal stretch, some epic bridges, sweeping bends and extra-long tunnels.

But with late-afternoon darkness and driving rain, it was a relief to arrive at our accommodation — a snug and cosy wooden cabin at Andalsnes Hytteutleie.

Next morning, my wife and kids enthusiastically tackled indoor climbing walls at the Norwegian Mountaineering Centre. 

We’d borrowed an electric Polestar 4 car, which was very much at home in a country where electric vehicles now outnumber petrol motors

Just next door was the entrance for the Romsdalen Gondola, a cable car which took us up through the clouds to the Nesaksla Mountain, some 2322ft above sea level. 

Relaxing in the Eggen Restaurant at the top, we were treated to views of the valleys way, way below. 

We feasted on local produce including fish soup, deer stew, Angus meat burgers and delicious apple juice. 

From Andalsnes runs the Golden Train on the Rauma Line, described as “Europe’s most scenic train journey”.

Instead, we used our glossy white Polestar to follow the route. 

Parking at the base of Trollveggen (Troll Wall) we marvelled at the tallest vertical rock face in Europe, a mighty 3,600ft. 

Soon after, we passed by the Kylling Bridge — the majestic railway crossing featured in Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince. 

As we approached the village of Bjorli, we explored the banks of a fir tree-lined river, with a mountain backdrop and the ground beneath us covered by a sprinkling of snow. 

It was a scene so magical, I half expected an appearance from Father Christmas himself. Our onward journey to the city Molde, on the banks of a fjord, included a hassle-free ferry trip. 

When there, we based ourselves for a few days at the Kviltorp Camping site, staying in four-bedroom “sea house” overhanging the water’s edge. 

Over breakfast, fog peeled away to reveal spectacular mountains across the fjord. Just beautiful. 

At the Molde Salmon Centre we learned about the science behind large-scale fish-farming and then cooked a salmon dish in the large kitchen. For our MasterChef-loving kids, this was an unexpected highlight of our week.

We rounded off our trip back in Alesund, where an exhausting walk up 416 steps to Viewpoint Aksla is almost mandatory — and great for photos. 

I never did convince my son to leave his phone at home — but at least it’s now filled with hundreds of pictures of beautiful Norway. 

WHEN it comes to the Cotswolds, everyone heads to the same towns of Bibury and Bourton-on-the-Water.

But an alternative town often overlooked is Winchombe – and it’s hiding a huge royal secret.

Found near Cheltenham, the town is called the “hidden jewel in the Cotswold crown,” by the tourist board.

It is a popular visit for walkers due to its location on seven famous footpaths.

This includes the Cotswold Way and Gloucestershire Way, as well as Windrush Way and Kenelm’s Trail.

It now even holds a walking festival every May in celebration.

There is the free-to-visit Winchombe Museum which talks of the town’s history dating back billions of years.

Otherwise you can also visit St Peter’s Church which dates back to the 1400s.

Just outside the town in the parish of Sudeley is Sudeley Castle.

As well as its beautiful 10 gardens set across the 1,200 acre estate, it has been owned by a number of kings over the years including King Edward IV and King Richard II.

King Henry VIII also visited with his then wife Anne Boleyn – and also made it the resting place of Queen Katherine Parr after her death.

This makes it the world’s only privately owned castle to have a queen buried onsite.

Sadly the town no longer has a functioning train station with scheduled passenger trains.

It did have its own back in 1906 which was on the line of Cheltenham to Birmingham.

Sadly it closed in 1960 and was dismantled in the 1980s.

However, it as since been partially restored for heritage trains such as themed trips and Christmas events.

Kids will love the Royal Mail model railway there too which has a Thomas & Friends train track as well as a small cafe.

You aren’t short of pubs in town either if you want a pint and a burger, from The Royal Oak to The Pheasant Inn.

If you’re looking for somewhere to stay, options include The Lion Inn and White Hart Inn as well.

For something more fun, on the outskirts is The Lodge at Winchcombe, a beautiful country house with en-suite bedrooms.

WHEN it comes to enjoying Halloween, the team at Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens don’t cut corners.

Spiders, cobwebs, witches’ hats, scarecrows, hay bales and thousands of pumpkins of all shapes, sizes and colours surrounded the stalls, rides and attractions.

But I could not help thinking that when it’s all over, someone’s got a mammoth clear-up job.

The Danish capital city’s famous amusement park, which is right in the centre, closes for two weeks while a team of more than 50 gardeners, designers, decorators, stagehands, crane operators, electricians and carpenters transform it into a spooky wonderland.

And as you would expect from the Danes, it’s all done very tastefully — and sustainably.

The 22,000 pumpkins are grown in Denmark, on the island of Samso, where the climate is spot on.

The larger ones are entries for the annual Danish Giant Pumpkin Championship, hosted by the park.

Afterwards, the prize pumpkins are given to Copenhagen Zoo, where apparently the elephants are particularly fond of them.

This year is the 20th anniversary of Tivoli’s Halloween festivities and around half a million people are expected to walk through the gates before the season ends on November 2.

To avoid the queues, I would suggest going earlier in the day to do the most popular rides, but make sure you stay until dusk to get the full effects of the flickering jack-o’-lanterns.

Little ones will love the treasure hunt and pumpkin-carving workshops, while older kids will enjoy being scared — but not too much — in Villa Vendetta, where actors jump out from the shadows.

The Haunted House wasn’t quite frightening enough for my teenage son, but the gravity-defying loops of The Demon rollercoaster took his breath away.

‘Getting cosy’

A day at Tivoli was part of the compromise when we told him he’d be missing the usual trick-or-treating with mates to join his parents on an October city break.

Autumn is the perfect time to visit Copenhagen. It’s when the leaves turn, the nights draw in and the “hygge” levels rise.

If you haven’t heard of hygge (pronounced hoo-ga), it is the Danish concept of “getting cosy” — and we’d come to the capital to get a dose of it.

Flights generally cost less after the summer too, and once you are here, getting around is cheap and easy.

The Metro system only has four lines and there are also hop-on, hop-off buses and water buses (small ferries).

We purchased Copenhagen Cards, which give you free public transport plus entry to 87 attractions.

They even cover the metro or train from the airport, which only takes about 15 minutes to the city centre.

As well as getting free entrance into Tivoli (rides and attractions cost extra) we used our Copenhagen Card to take a sightseeing cruise up the river, past the famous Little Mermaid statue (it really is tiny), the royal palace, funky house boats and more.

Cardamom buns

Cruises start from Nyhavn, the city’s pretty harbour with brightly-coloured houses, where we warmed up afterwards with a cup of Glogg, a sweet mulled wine.

We took the water bus to Contemporary Copenhagen to enjoy the art installations and we joined the locals cycling around the three city lakes at Soerne.

The bikes were hired from our hotel, Charlottehaven, which also happens to be a short walk from one of the city’s best bakeries, Juno. The delicious cardamom buns were well worth queuing for.

Eating out in Copenhagen isn’t cheap but there’s a growing number of communal dining venues, a concept known as faellesspisning, which are really good value.

In just a few days we’d packed a lot in and had fallen in love with Copenhagen, a compact and friendly city where everything is within easy access, even a 20-acre theme park

We went to Kanalhuset (the Canal House) in Christianshavn and joined a table full of locals for a simple but very tasty meal for around £16 each.

There’s only one choice each night (you can check what’s on the menu on the website) but they will always do a vegetarian option on request.

Everyone turns up at 6.30pm for drinks in the bar and then joins one of the large tables in the restaurant for dinner at 7pm.

We made friends with a lovely Danish family celebrating their mum’s birthday. Pretty much all the locals here speak excellent English, so it was easy to chat.

Once the Halloween festivities are over, Tivoli closes again for two weeks so that all the pumpkins can be replaced with fairy lights, an ice-skating rink and hundreds of Christmas trees.

Now we need to go back and experience Christmas hygge-style.

IT’S hard to believe, but at the age of 68, Gloria Estefan, one of the biggest-selling and most-celebrated artists of all time, is marking her 50th year in music.

For the first time, she has confirmed Rachel Zegler, who shot to fame in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, Disney’s Snow White and recently in Evita on the West End, is set to play her.

She said: “I think she’s awesome. I think she’s incredible. I know she’s killed it in Evita.

“We’re still working on the green light because we’re figuring out where to do it, how to do it.

“This has been in the works for quite a few years now. And that’s how it is. You work, you work, you work, and then all of a sudden, boom, the trigger’s pulled and you’ve got to do it right away. But she’s lovely.”

But asked if she thinks Rachel will take the part, she continued: “I think she would. I just need to offer her an actual part. So we need to be greenlit completely and we’re almost there.

“I met her by Zoom. She’s got a beautiful singing voice and she’s a great actor. So absolutely.”

It was originally claimed the film will be an adaptation of her 2015 jukebox musical On Your Feet! although that idea has changed.

The star explained: “The movie’s not going to be the show. There’s a lot in there.”

Gloria was born in Cuba but her family fled to the US during the Cuban Revolution and she has now become one of Miami’s most famous residents.

And as one of the city’s stars, she has become pals with David and Victoria Beckham, who have a home there and have become key to the area with Becks’ football team Inter Miami CF.

But it’s clear they all move in the upper echelons when Stateside.

In a major name drop when quizzed on hanging out with them, she said: “I’ve been at their home. It’s lovely. David is such a lovely man – and Victoria.

“We actually went to a dinner at their home and President Obama was there, and the head of Reddit, and Jeff Bezos. It was really cool.

“It was small, but only the most powerful people in that room. It was great.

“They’re very kind people. And he’s done amazing things for soccer or football, as you call it here.”

And there have been more Brits in Miami, with Dua Lipa performing there last month, when she covered Gloria’s 1985 hit Conga.

“I was so sad that I wasn’t in town,” Gloria said.

“She had invited me to go and do that with her. And I love her. I’m a big fan of Dua Lipa. And that’s the sexiest conga you’re ever going to see, hands down.”

After such an illustrious career, she recently released her 30th album Raíces, which is largely Spanish-language escapism and the perfect soundtrack for a soiree or relaxing evening in.

And it was her husband of 47 years, producer Emilio, who made it happen.

Gloria, who was writing another musical at the time, explained how the salsa record poured out of him.

She added: “It’s got beautiful, romantic ballads. Emilio said, ‘I wrote you a love song’. I go, ‘Babe, you’re going to sing it?’.

He goes, ‘No, you’re going to sing it for me’.”

And as for retirement after five decades in the game? Don’t count on it.

She giggled: “In ten years time, I hope to still be alive. That’s my first plan. Who knows?

“I only choose what I really, really want to give my time to. It’s just that. I had all these amazing opportunities. And they just converged this year.”

She added that during their break-up “it got really, really, really bad”.

Lily, who is sober, said: “The feelings of despair that I was experiencing were so strong.

“The last time I felt anything like that, drugs and alcohol were my way out, so it was excruciating to sit with those [feelings] and not use them.”

Crouchy Enter the Dragon

ABBEY CLANCY and Peter Crouch are slowly turning their home into a zoo – and the next animal they are adding is a bearded dragon.

The couple, who live in Surrey with their four children, already own two dogs, cats and a horse but now they are adding reptiles to the menagerie.

Crouchy says they are getting the reptile, which is native to Australia, because their son is desperate for one as a pet.

As well as the lizard, Abbey wants to also get lambs and chickens.

Peter said: “The more animals the better, apparently. Bearded dragons are next on the horizon. My little boy has wanted one for years. They’re actually all right. I thought it would be a nightmare, but I’ve been down the shop and held them.

“We’re actually going to get one. They grow to be quite big but they’re quite chilled.”

Michael makes big money

MICHAEL McINTYRE’s firm raked in more than £3.2million last year – making him one of the biggest earners on TV.

He had another stellar year presenting Saturday-night series Michael McIntyre’s Big Show and quiz The Wheel.

The comedian’s TV production firm Hungry McBear paid £805,000 in corporation tax in its last financial year up to December 31.

That rate suggests he made just over £3.2million.

Reserves in the company now stand at £1,718,407.

The firm is jointly controlled by Michael and TV producer Dan Baldwin, who is married to Holly Willoughby.

Despite bringing a libel case against her, Rebekah’s reputation and finances were left hanging in tatters after she was savaged by Mrs Justice Steyn in her ruling.

She was ordered to pay Coleen Rooney £1.4million – picking up 90 per cent of Coleen’s bill after she sensationally lost the libel case.

Coleen went on to release a three-part documentary on Disney+ called Coleen Rooney: The Real Wagatha Story and land a place on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here.

The ad, created by BBH London, hits screens this Saturday, October 18 to launch “all sorts of games for all sorts of treacles”.

LONDON’S biggest port is a confusing place.

First of all, it’s in Essex not London, and it’s bizarrely a regular filming destination for Hollywood directors – doubling up for everything from Venice to Gotham City.

From Batman to Indiana Jones and even Paddington Bear, the port town of Tilbury in Essex is a big star of the screen.

When Christian Bale was Batman, he spent time filming at the docks while it doubled up as Gotham City, as well as the nearby Coalhouse Fort on the edge of the River Thames.

The Coalhouse Fort was built in the 1860s to protect the Thames – and in the movie was made to look like a prison.

Christian Bale isn’t the only mega star to have spent time in Tilbury, Harrison Ford, Sean Connery and director Steven Spielberg visited the docks to film the third Indiana Jones movie; Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

They even used the docks as the background for a boat chase, which they pretended was Venice.

And perhaps the most famous star of them all – Paddington Bear.

Tilbury featured in the first Paddington Bear film, at the beginning of the movie when the bear migrates from Peru and ends up heading into London.

Tilbury Dock is located in Tilbury Town, which features a star-shaped, 16th century fort on the waterfront that was built to defend the river against enemy ships.

It was in nearby West Tilbury that Elizabeth I rallied her army, awaiting the Armada in 1588.

You can now visit Tilbury Fort, as it’s managed by English Heritage, tickets for adults cost £8.60 and tickets for children are £5.

Meanwhile, the train station in Tilbury Town has been shortlisted as one of the most life-changing stations in the country.

It’s part of the World Cup of Stations Competition where a group of shortlisted stations in Britain battle it out head-to-head in a public vote.

People have shared their own stories about the train stations to celebrate 200 years of British railway.

Tilbury Town has been hailed as a “key point of arrival for people journeying to Britain.

“From emigrants and returning servicemen to post-war migrants seeking fresh opportunities, Tilbury became a symbol of hope and renewal.

“One of its finest moments came in June 1948, when the Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury, bringing hundreds of passengers from the Caribbean.”

But base it on the true story of an escaped felon hiding out in a toy shop and things get more interesting. 

Channing Tatum plays Jeffrey Manchester, the charismatic convict from North Carolina with the “you couldn’t make it up” life story. 

An ex-military man, Manchester has been struggling financially since being decommissioned. 

So to support his family he turns to a professional life of crime.

Black comedy One Battle After Another is cinematic dynamite with huge stars

His first attempt at dropping through the ceiling of a McDonald’s and emptying their tills is such a success he repeats this style of heist 45 more times. 

As a non-violent robber who offers people his coat while holding them up at gunpoint, he soon earns himself the local moniker of “Roofman”. 

As police put it, he’s a genius, but also an idiot. 

When eventually caught and sentenced to four decades behind bars, Manchester swiftly escapes jail and goes on the run. 

Looking for a place to take cover he lands on a Toys R Us store and sets up home in a crate under the eaves. 

For six months he sleeps undetected, surviving on stolen M&M’s, while watching jobsworth boss Mitch (Peter Dinklage) on CCTV for entertainment and ultimately falling for employee Leigh (Kirsten Dunst), a divorced mum. 

The tale of how their romance blossoms — as Manchester increasingly risks his chances outside the store’s four walls — would seem utterly far-fetched, if it wasn’t for the fact that in 2004 it all actually happened. The chemistry between the leads is convincing. 

Dunst as Leigh, the church-going single mum falling in love while being unknowingly duped, reminds you that no matter how outwardly likeable Manchester seems, he continually hurt people with his odd mix of arrogance, immaturity and intelligence.

He wants it all to be real, while knowing that it can’t be. 

Director Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine) periodically lightens things up with various meme-worthy set pieces involving Tatum barely clad in feather boas, or wearing roller blades or completely starkers with only a fan to protect his modesty. 

But it is the pondering over how decent a person, or not, Manchester really was that will keep you gripped. 

GOOD FORTUNE

KEANU Reeves is at his Bill and Ted-esque best in this silly, but very funny, light-hearted bromance about a guardian angel who can’t quite get a grip on his ­heavenly duties. 

Written by Aziz Ansari (Master Of None) Reeves is Gabriel, a rookie winged protector limited to saving people from “texting while driving” catastrophes. 

He’d like to rescue lost souls too but his boss Martha (Sandra Oh) thinks he’s not ready to be promoted. 

One of his celestial charges is Arj (Ansari) who despite being well qualified, can’t catch a break and is sleeping in his car while doing gig economy work in LA for an odd-jobs app. 

A stint as assistant for billionaire Jeff (Seth Rogen) – who spends his days shopping for Rolexes and sitting in his sauna – only makes him feel more of a failure. So Gabriel steps in to help by facilitating a life swap between the two, which he hopes will make Arj appreciates what he already has. 

The script lacks the ­substance it was probably aiming for, and there’s far too much chatting about chicken nuggets, but this comedy does deliver lots of laughs. 

AFTER THE HUNT

SET in the academic enclaves of a rarefied American Ivy League University, this affected campus tale from director Luca Guadagnino could do with a tutorial to discuss what its own discourse is. 

Julia Roberts plays Alma Imhoff, a Yale philosophy professor and feminist who is idolised by her students. 

Imhoff and husband Frederick (Michael Stuhlbarg) host bourgeois soirees in their art-filled pad where favourite students including Maggie (Ayo Edebiri), and Hank (Andrew Garfield) gather to muse and debate. 

But when Maggie accuses Hank of sexual assault and turns to her tutor for guidance, beliefs, boundaries and loyalties blur for both women. 

Roberts is exceptional as Imhoff but the pace is so laboured and the ostentatious dialogue so pleased with itself it feels like a dull self-congratulatory lecture.

A repetitive ticking pendulum only emphasises the plodding pace and a subplot about stomach ulcers adds little. Some valid social commentary around generational divides is quickly drowned out by more droning. The many lingering close-ups are stylistically credible yet still dull.

SOUTHWEST Airlines has revealed its new cabin interior and the seats have been made to be extra comfy.

The budget airline says it has listened to travellers and improved facilities in its updated cabin like USB chargers and entertainment holders.

Southwest Airlines is the world’s biggest budget airline as it serves the largest number of routes around the world.

Now, it has revealed the new design onboard its Boeing 737 MAX 8 – the airline even took passenger feedback into account when creating the new cabin.

It has covered “employee perceptions of color, comfort, and aspirations for the overall onboard experience, and it’s meant to create a cabin environment that feels modern, welcoming, and uniquely Southwest.”

The airline added that its seats “are intuitively designed for ultimate comfort, while maximizing seat width and overall support”.

The design should make for better lumbar support than the current seats on Southwest’s planes.

Along with a new seat design the cabin has bigger overhead lockers with space for 60 per cent more bags, USB-A and USB-C chargers at every seat and carpeting and lighting updates.

It even has a holder for electronic devices on the back of seats, and tray tables have inset drink holders on left and right.

On the plane are extra legroom rows which have been fitted ahead of the official launch of assigned seating from January 2026.

More than half of the carrier’s planes have now been fitted with extra legroom as of mid-October 2025.

So while economy seats have been fitted with extras, they aren’t any bigger. The pitch is 31″, while extra legroom seats have five inches more legroom.

Extra legroom seats also come with two free checked bags, early boarding, premium drinks and snacks, and free Wi-Fi.

Earlier this year, Chris Perry, a Southwest spokesperson, told USA TODAY: “We didn’t want to remove any seats from the planes so we pulled down an inch of pitch to accommodate the ELR [extra legroom] seating and stay at 175 seats” referring to the Boeing 737-800 and Max 8 planes

He added the airline’s 737-700s will each have six fewer seats after retrofits.  

Meanwhile, another airline has revealed its new cabin configuration which stops passengers in basic economy from fully reclining its seats.

WestJet announced it has had a “full cabin refresh” and introduced economy seating with a “fixed recline” to its Boeing 737-8 MAX and 737-800 aircraft.

WestJet explained that the reason for this is to “help preserve personal space”.

For passengers who do want to put their seats back, you can do so in premium – a new seating option which has been added to the aircraft.

The airline went on to add that the new seating options are good news for passengers as it will result in cheaper tickets.

It’s not uncommon for airlines to reduce the size of an economy pitch altogether.

This is because filling economy seats means that airlines can cover basic costs, whereas selling premium or first class tickets is where they make their money.

By reducing the size of economy seats, or even taking some out altogether, airlines have room to create more space for high-profit cabins.

For the seasonal period, the Northern Belle has launched three new offerings from exploring Edinburgh to wandering around Christmas markets, and indulging in dinner with all the twimmings.

From November 15 until December 20, the Northern Belle, is going all out for Christmas.

One of the experiences is for the ‘Christmas Lunch’ where guests are welcomed in style as a red carpet is laid across the platform.

Onboard there’s welcome Champagne and tasty canapés, once guests are settled into a comfortable armchair, they will be served a seven-course festive feast.

The Northern Belle came in fifth place between the Glacier Express at number four and the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express at number six.

Other trips onboard the Northern Belle include Historic Edinburgh at Christmas.

The journey begins in Hull at 7.25AM where passengers can enjoy a three-course brunch with a Mimosa or Bloody Mary cocktail.

Passengers will journey up to Edinburgh where they will have five hours to explore the city.

On returning to the train, guests can indulge in a champagne reception that awaits before enjoying a six-course dinner with fine wine – the price for this starts at £495 per passenger.

The other Christmas offering is exploring York’s festive markets for passengers who hop on in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
