Inside Sesko’s life off the pitch

Benjamin Sesko made his Manchester United in Sunday’s defeat to Arsenal.

On the field, the £74million striker made little impact as his side crashed to a 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford.

But off it, Sesko leads a fabulous lifestyle full of glitz and glamour.

United plot Real raid

Manchester United are reportedly eyeing a shock move for Real Madrid ace Eduardo Camavinga.

Red Devils boss Ruben Amorin is eager to add some defensive steel to his midfield before the transfer window closes on September 1.

Their interest in Brighton’s Carlos Baleba has reportedly cooled due to the “difficulty” in getting a deal over the line this close to deadline day.

And according to reports in Spain, United are now considering trying to sign Camavinga from Real.

It’s claimed the Old Trafford club are toying with the idea of submitting a £69million bid for the 22-year-old, who Amorim is said to be a big admirer of.

Rasmus Hojlund: Manchester United striker left out of Arsenal game

Hojlund, who joined for £72m two years ago, was United’s main striker last season and scored 10 goals in 52 games.

His debut campaign brought 16 goals after his move from Italian side Atalanta.

The move to drop Hojlund has been backed by United’s leadership.

Amorim has spent £200m on a completely revamped forward line, with Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha set to fill the two number 10 slots Amorim prefers.

In addition to Mount, England international Kobbie Mainoo could also play as a false nine – while Bruno Fernandes did the job successfully in the 2024 FA Cup final.

On United’s pre-season tour of the United States, Cunha filled the number nine role – although he also tended to drop deeper.

Seventeen-year-old Chido Obi featured for the first team at the end of last season, although at his stage of his development it is thought unlikely he would be regarded as a regular stater, with his involvement is more likely as a substitute.

Man Utd transfer news LIVE: Red Devils ‘in Sesko talks’, United to launch ‘bid’ for Lopez, Germans ‘want Hojlund’

He’s not for sale, Main

Manchester United have reportedly performed a U-turn on the prospect of selling Kobbie Mainoo to help balance the books.

That’s according to former club scout Mick Brown, who told Football Insider: “There are a number of players Man United want to get rid of.

“From what I understand, Kobbie Mainoo is not one of them after a change of mind.

“The likes of Garnacho, Sancho and the others who have been left out of training in pre-season, that’s who the club are looking to raise money from.

“In my opinion, they should never have been considering letting Kobbie Mainoo go, it was a crazy idea.

“After he didn’t sign that new contract, it looked like he had decided he wanted to leave.

“That interest didn’t really come as heavily as they maybe expected, but I won’t complain about that.

“From what I hear, he’s going to be happy to stay into the new season and hopes he’ll be a bigger part of the team as Amorim is going to use him more regularly.”

Rasmus Hojlund: Manchester United striker available for £30m

United are waiting to decide their next move and there have been reports that the player would prefer to switch to Old Trafford.

United sources are adamant they could do a deal before selling players.

But it is accepted that there would have to be exits to ensure they remain compliant with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

And, if Sesko arrived, Hojlund would be marginalised.

If Hojlund was sold for £30m, it would effectively be a loss for United given the forward’s ‘book value’ is £43m as he is two years into the five-year contract he signed.

United have spent almost £130m this summer on Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.

‘I don’t know what’s going to happen’ – Amorim refuses to guarantee Hojlund Man Utd future amid Sesko transfer push

MANCHESTER UNITED boss Ruben Amorim admitted he could not guarantee Rasmus Hojlund’s Old Trafford future – despite the Dane’s dazzling display in the Windy City.

Hojlund opened the scoring in the 4-1 trouncing of Bournemouth before creating space for the third – which he claimed but was not awarded – when Amad Diallo fired through a crowd and into the net.

The £72million man’s goal came as United stepped up their attempts to land RB Leipzig’s Slovenian ace Benjamin Sesko as their new first-choice No9.

And while he was full of praise for Hojlund’s contribution, Old Trafford chief Amorim conceded: “I am really happy with Rasmus, but I don’t know what is going to happen until the end of the market.

“The important thing is that the strikers that are here are working really well, are improving, are helping the team and that is the most important thing.”

Amorim added: “People focus on the goals and we have suffered a lot because of the lack of goals.

“But it’s not just the goals with Rasmus. It’s also about the way he connects the play.

“Every time we have to clear the ball, we are doing so under pressure.

“His ability to hold the defender off and to connect with the support is helping us a lot to play better.

“And we are playing better because he is playing better.”

United were far too good for the sub-par Cherries, with the excellent Patrick Dorgu storming through to claim the second and teenage substitute Ethan Williams netting the fourth with his first touch.

Bournemouth’s reply was a late own goal by Matthijs de Ligt, who had replaced Harry Maguire at half-time, but Amorim allayed concerns about the England centre-back.

Man Utd & Newcastle in £40M Tug-of-War for Bundesliga Wonderkid!

He explained: “He had an issue during the holidays, during training.

“Harry’s come a little bit late, so we have to be careful with him. It’s just a little bit of fatigue with the training.

“We are trying to control everything and saving all the players to give them the exact number of minutes they need.”

Fatigue was also the reason that Brazilian Matheus Cunha was not involved at Soldier Field, but a delighted Amorim said: “It was a good game.

“We played with intensity. We were aggressive and that is something that we needed to improve on from last season.

“Overall, we had better possessions compared to the last game, so they are listening.

“Of course, scoring first in the beginning of the game can change the confidence of the team. It was a good test, a good day.

“It was just a pre-season game. But if you look at us, at the same players from last year, it looks like a different team and that is a good sign.”

Bryan Mbeumo transfer: Do Manchester United still need to sign a striker or can Rasmus Hojlund flourish?

Whatever the decision on United’s striker dilemma, there can be little argument the addition of Mbeumo – alongside Cunha – strengthens their firepower.

Only Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, Newcastle’s Alexander Isak and Manchester City’s Erling Haaland scored more than his 20 Premier League goals last season.

It was, though, the first time he has reached double figures for a top-flight club, and his expected goals (xG) statistic of 12.3 – which he outperformed by 7.7 goals – is something that would be difficult to repeat.

In the past five Premier League seasons, just 14 players have overperformed their xG by five goals or more.

Sutton said: “He has done well at Brentford but playing for Manchester United is very different. With respect to Brentford, there is no great expectation there. At United, he will be expected to perform straight away.

“He has experience, he is a good finisher and his versatility is a big positive – he can play as a central striker as well as on the wing, cutting inside off the right on to his left foot.

“But he has had one very good season where his numbers were very good, so the question is whether he can repeat that.”

The Cameroon international is not being bought just for his goals, though.

Mbeumo prefers to play on the right behind a striker – with Cunha expected to feature on the left – but also has the versatility to play centrally, offering another solution to the striker problem.

He topped the list for touches per 90 minutes for players who scored more than 15 goals last season – showing his involvement in play – and ranks as one of the best ball carriers in the league, consistently with an effective end product.

He was 17th on the list of top assisters – with seven – but in expected assists he led the way in the Premier League with 9.3 xA.

Alongside Cunha’s creativity, that can only be good news for whoever is chosen to play the central striker role.

“Consistency in those forward positions is what United are striving for, because they have not had it with, say, Alejandro Garnacho or Antony,” said Sutton.

“They are maybe thinking an older, more experienced player, who is more reliable, is what they need. That’s Mbeumo – he fits into Ruben Amorim’s system and he fits the bill as proven Premier League quality too.

“Amorim wants a harmonious camp as well as a consistent performer, not someone who is a 3/10 one week and a 9/10 the next.

“That’s what Manchester United have really been lacking and the numbers Mbeumo provided could be really important. That is the part of the jigsaw they have got to really solve if they want to be challenging at the top end of the table.”

Transfer news LIVE: Liverpool make £113m Wirtz offer, Inter inquire about Hojlund, Spurs target Frank as new manager

Tell me Mor

Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers has emerged as a summer transfer target for Arsenal.

According to The Times, the Gunners would have to offer a “significant fee” to prize Rogers away from Villa Park.

The playmaker only joined Villa in 2023 for £15million from Middlesbrough and extended his contract until 2030 last November.

But missing out on the Champions League could see players moved away this summer as the Villans are at serious risk from PSR rules, according to research undertaken by The Athletic.

The club have lost £206.2m in the past two seasons, the highest deficit in the Premier League in that time.

Research from the outlet suggests project Villa can only lose £15m in 2024-25 and remain in line with Prem rules.

As a result, they may be forced to listen to offers for a number of stars this summer.

Viktor Gyokeres boost

Manchester United are ready to win the race for Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres.

United recently revealed total operating expenses have dropped by £41.6million to £162.1m in the latest quarterly club accounts after Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s brutal cost cutting.

That is despite the cash spent on the Glazers’ debt spiralling to a staggering £1.2billion.

Man Utd’s gradual U-turn in club finances means they are ready to pip Arsenal to land Gyokeres.

The striker has an £85m release clause but it is understood that the Portuguese giants would accept a fee closer to £60m this summer.

United boss Ruben Amorim is now ready to raid his former club after the boost in their accounts.

More Tottenham departures

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has lost his right-hand woman in executive director Donna Cullen, who has left after 20 years of service.

Elsewhere, Ryan Mason has also left the club to further his managerial career by taking up the vacant position at Championship side West Brom.

They are set to be the first two of many departures this summer after Ange Postecoglou’s dismissal as manager.

The shake-up also includes the appointment of Vinai Venkatesham as CEO, who previously served bitter rivals Arsenal in the same role.

Sources add these moves could be the prelude to majority owners Enic pumping fresh funds into the club.

Ruben Amorim future

Ruben Amorim plunged his own Manchester United future into doubt after the latest Old Trafford debacle.

The Portuguese manager’s admission that he is struggling to find a solution for his team’s shocking season was a clear sign of the uncertainty at the heart of the club.

But the bigger question marks will only be resolved in Bilbao next week. A Europa League Final win for United over Tottenham will mean far more than just the trophy and a silver sheen to cleanse many of the black clouds of despair.

But defeat in the Basque country will have ramifications to last far beyond the summer. In simple terms, it is about cold, hard cash. The reality is that winning the Europa League will ensure a looming black hole is filled.

If United do not triumph in San Mames, the immediate cost will be clear. A £10million cut in sponsorship revenue, as part of the contract with kit suppliers adidas.

No European football at all, meaning they will miss out on around £49m up front through Uefa’s complicated revenue distribution system plus the £20m-plus in gate receipts from the minimum four home games.

And if, as now seems likely, they do finish 16th in the Prem table, that will mean £23.8m less in TV-related prize money than for last term’s eight-placed finish.

That all adds up to more than £100m, before the prize money for progress through the Champions League – up to a further potential £95m or so – is taken into account. Less income equals less money to spend.
