Game of Thrones’ Alfie Allen issues statement about ‘power of love’

Alfie Allen stars as a drug trafficker being chased by the CIA in Sky’s new fast-paced thriller series Atomic, and the actor says his character believes in ‘the power of love’

He’s conquered Westeros as Theon Greyjoy in Game of Thrones – now Alfie Allen is embarking on an even more perilous mission.

In Atomic, Sky’s new high-octane thriller, he plays Max, a free-spirited drug trafficker making runs through the Middle East. “He’s a big believer in the power of love and connection between people,” Alfie says.

“But this is interrupted by a crazy stunt that happens in the first 30 seconds of the show.” Thrown into danger from the get-go, Max is ambushed by militants while crossing the Libyan desert – until one spares him.

“The first stunt in the series is a massive car crash, which was actually the first day of shooting for me,” he says. “The car flips over, and that’s where I meet the man I call JJ as he won’t tell me his name.”

JJ, played by Shazad Latif, is a mysterious figure hiding out in the desert with a warlord. “We meet him just as he’s being chased by a guy called Rab,” Shazad says. “He decides to kick it into gear and make a move. That’s where he meets Max, who’s just had a car crash.”

JJ takes Max hostage, sparking a tense, unpredictable road trip across Libya, Algeria and Beirut. Their trail soon reaches deep-cover CIA agent Cassie Elliott, played by The Handmaid’s Tale star Samira Wiley. “She is a Non-Official Cover (NOC) officer with the CIA,” Samira says.

“Her deep cover job is a professor at the American University of Beirut. She’s been there for about four years. When she is pulled back into the game, she is in pursuit of Max and JJ because they happen to be in possession of the HEU, (Highly Enriched Uranium).”

Yet JJ’s motives may not be entirely criminal. “JJ is on a journey to reconcile with his complex past, his relationship with faith and his own fate,” Shazad says. “He thinks Max might be a sign of a way out and a way to find a path to redemption.”

The unlikely pairing fuels the series’ tension. “Max is constantly trying to get answers from JJ about who he is, and where he is in his life,” Alfie says. “With Max, you see what you get – JJ is much more secretive and Max is determined to work him out.”

Off-screen, however, there was no hostility between Alfie and Shazad. In fact, the pair managed to bond during filming of Atomic with Alfie showering his co-star with praises.

“Working with Shazad has been amazing,” Alfie says. “We’ve been very, very fortunate to be able to have a buddy journey project where you get along with your co-star.”

Five part series Atomic begins on Sky Showcase and NOW at 9pm on Thursday 28 August.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau on intense fight scenes that saw King and Conqueror star ‘knocked out’

EXCLUSIVE: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau stars as William, Duke of Normandy, in upcoming BBC series King & Conqueror.

Most will recognise Nikolaj Coster-Waldau for his role of Jaime Lannister in Game of Thrones but for his latest venture, he’s transformed into William, Duke of Normandy – or as many will know him, William the Conqueror.

The Danish actor will go head to head against James Norton in the BBC historical drama which follows the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings in 1066.

King and Conqueror also marks the first time Nikolaj has directed. And funnily enough, his directorial debut saw him choreograph a scene which sees the leading actor fight bare-chested.

Speaking of filming the fight, which fans will get the chance to see in episode five, he recalled: “That was tough. I was spending a lot of time planning that because we only had so much time to do it.

“The stunt team was incredible. The trick, or the challenge, when you do something like that, of course, because everyone’s bare-chested, you can’t hide anything. You know you’re going to hurt yourself when you do these things, so we had to be very careful.”

Heaping praise on the stunt team, which included UFC and MMA fighters, Nikolaj shared: “These guys insane. The Icelandic guys, they’re brilliant. I mean, there’s one scene, the guy I’m fighting – he’s in fights in the the big stuff – which is why I wanted to be the guy choking him out.

“There’s this big, big guy – at one point, he lifts up James [Norton] – early in the fight, he takes one of the other stunt guys and he throws him against this wagon.

“And that was planned but what wasn’t planned was that he’s thrown him so hard that he went through the wagon and he like completely crashed the whole thing. The sound you hear, it’s literally a guy being thrown through. But they just took it.”

He went on to share that during filming, everyone got so involved, one member of the team was knocked out.

“We had rehearsals where there was a guy knocked out. I mean they go so close, right? And it was a mistake both of them. I mean you should always be able to hold your fist but the other guy, he instead like holding the distance, he kind of moved forward right as he was swinging.

“And they were also you know MMA fighters. So his tooth went out, blood out. And then the other guy, of course, because he hit the tooth, broke [his knuckle], he had to have stitches in his hand as well.”

King and Conqueror is the story of a clash that defined the future of a country for a thousand years.

The synopsis reads: “Harold of Wessex and William of Normandy were two men destined to meet at the Battle of Hastings in 1066; two allies with no design on the English throne, who found themselves forced by circumstance and personal obsession into a war for possession of its crown.”

King and Conqueror airs Sunday 24 August on BBC One at 9pm.

“Leading the charge for the CIA is highly skilled scientist and a Non-Official Cover (NOC) officer Cassie Elliott (Wiley).

“Convinced Max and JJ are in league with violent extremists, her relentless pursuit puts them all on a collision course revealing that nothing is what it seems, and everyone has an ulterior motive.

“The pair find themselves on a wild road trip, confronting covert operatives, an internationally funded cartel, and ultimately their own pasts.

“What starts as a bid for survival slowly becomes something more: a reluctant partnership, a shot at redemption, and one hell of a ride.”

‘I visited the UK’s most photographed road, what I found there terrified me’

An avenue which looks eerily haunting also has its own ghostly goings-on according to visitors – thousands of whom have been flocking there to photograph it after it appeared in Game of Thrones

People walking along the Dark Hedges as workmen begin the operation to remove a number of trees in Northern Ireland's famous Dark Hedges, near Armoy in Co Antrim, amid concerns they could pose a risk to the public. The tunnel of trees became famous when it was featured in the HBO fantasy series Game Of Thrones and now attracts significant numbers of tourists from around the world. Six of the trees are being removed and remedial work will be carried out on several others. Picture date: Monday November 20, 2023.

This image of a tangled avenue of trees deep in the countryside is drawing thousands of visitors every year and some people are saying it’s not just for the views.

Known as The Dark Hedges, this creepy pathway in County Antrim, Northern Ireland might be one of the UK’s most photographed roads, yet it also holds the title as possibly the spookiest. The twisted beech trees lining Bregagh Road were planted more than 200 years ago by the Stuart family to impress guests approaching their grand estate, Gracehill House. Today, the walkway is an international tourist hotspot, helped in part by its appearance as the “Kingsroad” in Game of Thrones.

Travel experts at City Tours Belfast say the number of visitors to The Dark Hedges continues to climb each year, particularly those travelling from England and Scotland in search of the perfect picture.

But while it looks like something from a storybook during the day, The Dark Hedges takes on a completely different feel after sunset.

As the light disappears and shadows stretch across the twisted trunks, the mood quickly turns from magical to unsettling.

The hedges are haunted by the Grey Lady, a ghostly figure said to drift silently between the trees before vanishing into thin air, according to local legend.

Some believe she’s the spirit of a maid from the nearby mansion while others think she may be from an abandoned graveyard hidden nearby. Visitors have reported unexplained lights, strange sounds, and a strong feeling of being watched, even when no one else is around.

British tourist Hannah Wells said: “I came during the day for the photos, but we stayed until dusk. As we walked back to the car, I suddenly felt cold, even though it was summer. My friend swears she saw something move across the road, but there was nothing there.”

Despite its eerie reputation, The Dark Hedges has become a popular backdrop for Instagram and TikTok, with influencers and content creators flocking to capture moody, gothic-style shots under the crooked branches.

At sunrise and sunset, the trees cast long shadows that create a natural tunnel of light and dark, perfect for atmospheric photos.

“People often think we edit our pictures,” said local tour guide Sean Donnelly. “But that’s just how the place looks when the fog rolls in. It’s beautiful and haunting at the same time.”

The Dark Hedges are located in County Antrim, near the village of Armoy, around 80km from Belfast.

They’re most easily reached by car, but visitors are warned: mobile signals can be weak in the area, and there are no major shops or cafés nearby.

Travel experts at City Tours Belfast recommend visiting early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the tour bus crowds and to enjoy the best chance of seeing the twisting branches in low light.
