Eze

Tottenham transfers: After missing out on Eberechi Eze, who might club look to now?

A selection of fan responses to BBC Sport on Thursday

Brian: Totally embarrassing. Over a week to get Eze signed and still couldn’t manage it and Arsenal do it in hours. A kick in the teeth to Spurs fans. We spend so much wasted time on negotiating deals, it’s pure frustration!

Bob: Can’t say I’m that bothered. He is 27 years old and his career so far has been QPR and Palace. He’s not been wanted by anyone like Barca or Real – move on.

Ian: Spurs’ mentality is like being a multi-millionaire and driving 25 minutes out of town because the petrol is 5p cheaper. By the time you get home you haven’t saved anything, wasted a bunch of time, and everyone else is confused by what you’re doing and laughing at you.

Andre: Eze is a fantastic player and would strengthen any team he plays for. But, we can’t look back. He isn’t a Spurs player so let’s not cry about him. Onwards and upwards!

Christopher: Can’t help but feel that Ange would’ve sounded Eze out and identified if his heart was in joining THFC or if he was stringing them along. If anything, it would have prevented this song and dance from playing out at Levy’s Tottenham.

Anthony: Completely get it from Eze’s perspective, it’s his boyhood club. For me, it’s another case of Levy and co. taking far too long to wrap something up. Realistically this only reportedly happened because of Havertz’s injury, but in football you should never take anything for granted. Not sure where to go now, put the extra funds towards Savinho and find another 10 quick.

Bob: If he’s a Gooner we don’t want him. Simple.

Mark: For once I don’t think we can blame Levy for dragging his heels on this outcome. I don’t think Eze ever wanted to sign for us, all we did was set it up for Arsenal to step in. Fair play to their buying team and no doubt our smug North London neighbours will be letting us know how good they feel.

Salah’s shock statement

Mohamed Salah has anointed Arsenal the “FAVOURITES” to win the Premier League this season.

Speaking to PFA awards presenter Cecil Thomas, who is a Gunners fan, he said: “I think you are the favourite now because you players who have been together for five years.

“I can’t say I’ll wish you luck – hopefully we do it again.”

Arteta reflects on Gyokeres debut

Mikel Arteta was full of praise for Viktor Gyokeres following his Premier League debut against Manchester United.

He said of the Swede: “He did a lot of things very good. You can tell, especially in our high pressing, the rhythm that we demand, especially in the first half, we’re giving a bit too much time.

“It’s something that we have to work on, especially there.

“And then in the finalising situation, he didn’t have that many chances to do that because, as I said, on the previous action before we had to play that last ball that the line was standing still with 40 metres behind, we managed to put the ball through to exploit his quality.

“But overall, coming away to Manchester United, winning your first game with Arsenal, it’s a good start.

Birmingham interested in former Arsenal star

Birmingham City are interested in the signature of Alexander Oxlade-Chamberlain, according to reports from Sky Sports.

The 32-year-old plays his football for Turkish giants Besiktas, who are reportedly willing to allow the former England international to move on a free transfer.

Oxlade-Chamberlain made almost 200 appearances for the Gunners in his six-year spell with the club.

He came through the Southampton academy and also played for Liverpool before moving abroad.

Arsenal’s unlikely star

Arsenal cruised to a 1-0 victory over Man Utd in their opening game of the4 season, but the difference maker proved to be a surprising name.

All eyes were on new forward signing Viktor Gyokeres to open his competitive tally with the club

But it was defender Riccardo Calafiori who would nod in at the back post after Utd keeper Altay Bayindir fluffed his lines attempting to punch a corner away.

Mikel Arteta is determined to deploy Calafiori higher up the pitch than his size and position might usually dictate, and he could be one to watch this season for his attacking contirbutions.

Broadcast change causes Arsenal controversy

Arsenal found themselves at the mercy of a new broadcast rule introduced for the upcoming Premier League season during their season opener against Man Utd.

Captain Martin Odegaard was caught in the Old Trafford tunnel at half-time and interviewed on camera regarding the game’s events so far.

The out of breath Norwegian said: “It has been a bit too hectic at times.

“So much space is too open, we need to control it a bit better.

“When we get the ball, pick the right moments and be a bit more accurate when we counter.”

The Gunners went on to win the game 1-0 and get their title challenge off to a flyer.

The new interview type was introduced for the upcoming campaign to mixed reception from fans and former pros.

But not everyone enjoys the new insight, with fans questioning the quality of interview that broadcasters will get out of players in such high pressure situations.

Xabi Alonso speaks out on Rodrygo

Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has confirmed his position on Arsenal target Rodrygo.

It was uncertain where the Brazilian would fall into the newly appointed boss’ plans, but the Spaniard appears to have found a place for him.

He said: “There are many rumors in the summer, but I’ve seen him well and I count on everyone.

“I count on Rodrygo for sure, 100 per cent.”

Mikel Arteta defends Gyokeres debut despite fans’ uncertainty

Eze battle nears its conclusion

Arsenal are set to lose out on priority target Eberechi Eze, if reports from Fabrizio Romano are to be believed.

North London rivals are offering up to a £60million package including add-ons for the England international.

The 27-year-old has been hugely influential in attack for Crystal Palace since arriving in 2020.

He appeared to have opened the scoring with a free-kick in the Eagles’ season opener against Chelsea, before it was ruled out due to Marc Guehi’s proximity to the wall.

Tottenham set to seal Eberechi Eze transfer after £60m offer over weekend but Crystal Palace will keep playing him

EBERECHI EZE’S transfer from Crystal Palace is NOT expected to happen before the Eagles’ Conference League tie on Thursday.

Tottenham are pushing to land the England attacker and there were doubts over whether he would play in yesterday’s goalless draw at Chelsea.

But boss Oliver Glasner never doubted Eze, who had a stunning free-kick ruled out at Stamford Bridge, would be available despite uncertainty over his future.

Glasner said: “He was picked because he’s a Crystal Palace player, and he’s a very good

“He trained the whole week, so there was no reason not to pick him.

“He will come to the Crystal Palace training ground today, Tuesday off, we take Wednesday and I expect him to be back playing for us against Fredrikstad.”

Eze, 27, wants to join Spurs, who over the weekend are understood to have made an opening offer in the region of £60m.

His potential departure will also depend on whether or not Palace can land a replacement before the window closes.

They are chasing Leicester’s Bilal El Khannouss and Club Brugge midfielder Christos Tzolis.

Glasner added: “The players are giving the answer week by week, it was the same last week against the Community Shield, winning against Liverpool on penalties.

“Then starting here against the Club World Cup champions.

“It just shows that this group is such a great group of characters.

“We have no influence on all the noise and all the rumours around us, but we know what we want to do, we know how we want to play, and this is what we want to show every single game.

“The players did great.

“They didn’t just show they are great footballers, but they are great people and that’s what I expected.”

Eze previously had a £60m release clause, including a further £8m in add-ons, but Glasner confirmed that has now expired and said his star man’s future was in the hands of club bosses.

Gyokeres plan

Mikel Arteta has outlined how he and his coaching staff plan to get the best out of new striker Viktor Gyokeres this season.

He said in his press conference today: “We want to do everything. First of all, understanding the player and exposing the player to the conditions that he can fulfil his incredible potential.

“Then that’s going to be the key, and the good thing is that many players, many strikers, they have come from different leagues, they have come to the Premier League and been successful.

“And it’s for us, creating the right context for Viktor to do what he does best, which is to score goals.”

New U21 head coach announced

Arsenal have announced that Max Porter will take over as the club’s new U21 head coach.

Porter has been with the Gunners since 2017, where he started life as an U9s coach.

Since then he has worked with the U13s, U17s and U19s.

Academy manager Per Mertesacker said: “Max has got the qualities needed to be a successful leader and coach.

“The environment he creates for staff and young players is always one of high challenge and ultimate care. Max is driving the highest standards and is a brilliant colleague and coach.

“We are all looking forward to supporting Max as he continues to develop in this role, and thank him for all his hard work and commitment so far.”

Will Gyokeres start?

Arsenal fans are clamouring to find out if new striker Viktor Gyokeres will start against Manchester United on Sunday.

Although Arteta didn’t give an explicit yes, the Gunners boss hinted that his new frontman is ready to go.

He said: “He’s getting better and better every day. He’s normally a really fit player. It’s true that he hasn’t trained so much with us.

“He had those two moments in games when he’s participated and the feeling was very good, so let’s see what we do on Sunday.”

Odegaard remaining as captain

Mikel Arteta has revealed that his players overwhelmingly voted in favour of keeping Martin Odegaard as captain this season.

Arsenal legend Tony Adams had said earlier in the week that Odegaard should be replaces by Declan Rice, but Arteta has revealed that is not a sentiment shared by the squad.

He said: “Well, my opinion is clear. It’s not just my opinion, it’s all the staff and especially the players.

“I asked them to vote for the captain and I got the result yesterday.

“By a mile, by a big, big 100 marks, everybody’s choosing the same person, which is Martin Odegaard, which is the most clear sign that you can have, how they feel about who has to be their captain to defend, improve and win the matches that we want to win.

“So there’s no question about that.”

Eberechi Eze transfer: Tottenham exploring a deal for Crystal Palace forward

Tottenham are exploring a deal for Crystal Palace and England forward Eberechi Eze.

Thomas Frank is looking to bolster his options in the final third after attacking midfielder James Maddison was ruled out for the majority of the season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Eze scored 14 goals across all competitions for Palace last season, including in their 1-0 win against Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

The 27-year-old made his England debut in 2023 and has won 11 caps for the Three Lions, including three appearances at Euro 2024.

Tottenham are also in talks with Manchester City over a move for Savinho but multiple sources have indicated that Eze is now emerging as a player of serious interest for Spurs.

There is no confirmation as to whether Tottenham will look to progress with deals for both Brazil winger Savinho and Eze.

But as managers across the division make their final preparations ahead of this weekend, chairmen will be trying to get some more players in through the doors in time for the curtain-raisers.

SunSport rounds up ten mega-money transfers that could get done THIS WEEK

ALEXANDER ISAK

The Newcastle striker’s future has been one of sagas of the summer – will he stay or will he go?

Liverpool had a £110m offer rejected as the Toon want £150m but how helpful could a sulking, unhappy Isak be for Eddie Howe?

SAVINHO

The Brazilian winger only joined Manchester City a year ago – seen as very much the replacement for Riyad Mahrez.

But Tottenham have entered talks over the wide man – although City would not entertain offers under £50m.

MARC GUEHI

The Crystal Palace captain led his side to a second Wembley trophy in three months on Sunday – but could line up for opponents Liverpool this season.

Steve Parish admitted the Eagles will sell if the right bid comes in as Guehi enters the final year of his deal. Newcastle have also been interested.

YOANE WISSA

The mass exodus at Brentford this summer may not be over just yet if Wissa follows Thomas Frank, Bryan Mbeumo, Christian Norgaard and Mark Flekken out of the Gtech.

Newcastle reportedly had a £25m bid turned down but look set to go back in for the DR Congo international, with Liverpool monitoring the situation.

Fulham submitted an offer of £32m but Shakhtar Donetsk are trying to hold out for £43m.

CARLOS BELEBA

Manchester United want to bring in another midfielder before the window closes – and would love Baleba in time for the start of the new season.

The Cameroon star is only 21 but Brighton will not let him go on the cheap, so much so that the Red Devils may well need to pay a record-breaking £115m-plus for the holding midfielder.

XAVI SIMONS

Chelsea are after a young, exciting attacker – again. This time it is Xavi Simons being lined up.

RB Leipzig will want at least £60m but the Blues may try and strike a deal which sees Christopher Nkunku return to his former club – plus Tyrique George.

ALEJANDRO GARNACHO

Copy and paste from above – but this time it is Alejandro Garnacho who could be on his way to Stamford Bridge with talks underway.

He is part of the ‘bomb squad’ deemed surplus to requirements by United gaffer Ruben Amorim, who will happily see the back of the Argentine wideman who was left out of the USA pre-season tour.

NICOLAS JACKSON

But with all the incomings at Chelsea – including strikers Joao Pedro and Liam Delap – there may be a major exit, too, with Jackson third-choice No9.

Jackson would prefer a switch to Newcastle, but the Toon will only bid for him should Isak leave – and they are determined not to let that happen.

EBERECHI EZE

Just like his skipper Guehi, Eze continues to be linked with an exit away from Selhurst Park.

With the Ademola Lookman deal seemingly off the cards, Arsenal may swoop for the Palace talisman in a package worth £55m to £60m – although Tottenham may attempt to hijack the transfer if they can’t get Savinho.

Arsenal transfer news LIVE: Eze ‘open’ to Gunners move, Trossard ‘wanted by two Prem clubs’, Saliba contract update

Eze ‘keen’ on Emirates move

Eberechi is eager to up sticks from Selhurst Park and move to the Emirates, it’s been claimed.

Fabrizio Romano said on his YouTube channel: “I’m told that the negotiation club to club has not started yet. But sources at Crystal Palace expect Arsenal to arrive for Eze.

“Why? Because Arsenal have been in contact for months now with the agents of Eze, because Eze is very appreciated by Arsenal, because Arsenal still want to add the player if they will have the opportunity to.

“They spoke to the player several times and the player is also very keen on a move. So Palace expect Arsenal to arrive.”

Merino talks Spurs loss

Mikel Merino reckons Arsenal’s loss to Spurs can be used as a catalyst for a solid start to the new Premier League season.

The Spain international said: “Obviously, winning is a priority for us, but in pre-season, there are other things that have a lot of value, like getting fit, keeping that connection with the fans here in this amazing city.

“We adapted quickly to the pitch, to the opponent, I think we dominated most of the game.

“The result is obviously the worst part, but we have to take the positives.

“Obviously, this feeling is going to be the gasoline for the season to keep growing, keep learning and hopefully go upwards.”

Arteta praises Dowman

Mikel Arteta has heaped praise on Max Dowman for his displays during pre-season.

He said: “I’m not surprised, he’s been really impressive with what he’s done again at his age, the way he has entered the matches and with that determination, that quality, that decisiveness I would say.

“The same with the other kids that played, so it was another exposure to them, which is not easy, especially at that age.

“They certainly have done so, so well and made a lot of people proud.”
