NFL: Atlanta Falcons 24-14 Buffalo Bills, Washington Commanders 25-24 Chicago Bears

In Monday night’s other game, a last-gasp 38-yard Jake Moody field goal with three seconds left gave the Chicago Bears a thrilling 25-24 victory at the Washington Commanders.

The San Francisco 49ers took Moody with a rare pick on a kicker in round three of the 2023 draft but they then cut him a poor week one performance this season.

He signed to the Bears practice squad and was activated for Monday’s game after an injury to Cairo Santos.

“It feels amazing,” said Moody. “To get all that support from all my team-mates after the game, it was an amazing feeling.”

Two Moody field goals and a rushing touchdown from quarterback Caleb Williams put Chicago 13-0 up before Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels found Chris Moore to reduce the deficit to six points at Northwest Stadium.

Matt Gay and Moody traded field goals before Daniels threw to Luke McCaffrey and Zach Ertz for touchdowns as Washington opened up a 24-16 lead.

A 55-yard D’Andre Swift receiving touchdown gave the Bears a chance to tie the game but they missed a two-point conversion, leaving the Commanders 24-22 ahead.

But a Daniels fumble gave possession back to the Bears, who drove down the field to set up Moody’s winning kick with three seconds left, leaving the Commaneders with a 3-3 record.

“That’s who we are. We fight,” said Williams, who threw for one touchdown and 252 yards as his team moved to 3-2.

“We’re 3-2 because of our fight, because of how we face adversity and come together.”

NFL week one: Josh Allen leads epic Buffalo Bills comeback against Lamar Jackson’s Baltimore Ravens

The Cincinnati Bengals have started 0-2 or worse in the past three seasons and Joe Burrow was 1-9 in the first two weeks in his career, so their one-point win against the Cleveland Browns will be a huge relief.

Even more encouraging was the fact the much-maligned defence stepped up to clinch their 17-16 victory.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Emeka Egbuka became only the second rookie since the 1970 merger to score a game-winning touchdown in the final minute as they edged Atlanta thanks to the Falcons missing a last-gasp field goal.

Las Vegas Raiders rookie running back Ashton Jeanty scored as they beat the Patriots in New England, and Washington’s Jacory Croskey-Merritt had an even better debut with 82 yards and a score as the Washington Commanders dominated the New York Giants.

Matthew Stafford became the 10th player in NFL history to reach 60,000 passing yards as the Los Angeles Rams beat the Houston Texans, while the San Francisco 49ers lost George Kittle to a hamstring injury in victory over the Seattle Seahawks.

Headline rookie Travis Hunter made his eagerly anticipated debut for the Jacksonville Jaguars, taking six catches for 33 yards as a receiver and playing six snaps on defence in a comfortable win over Carolina.

Top overall draft pick Cam Ward lost on his debut as the Tennessee Titans were beaten by the Denver Broncos.

Buffalo Bill’s Resort set to close amid Primm’s struggles

The giant rainbow-colored headdress sitting atop a bison beckoned generations of Angelenos and other drivers heading into Nevada on the 15 Freeway.

Sure, Las Vegas was only 40 minutes north, but at Buffalo Bill’s Resort and Casino, patrons could enjoy gaming, drinking, neon lights and entertainment without the Sin City prices and crowds.

It’s an era that will soon end as Primm Valley Resorts — which operates Buffalo Bill’s on the desert strip known as Primm along the California-Nevada border — announced the resort’s imminent closure.

“In order to deliver the best possible experience for today’s guest expectations, Buffalo Bill’s will be shifting its 24/7 operations to Primm Valley Resort & Casino,” the company said in a release Tuesday afternoon, referring to the sister resort adjacent to Buffalo Bill’s.

Primm Valley, owned by Affinity Gaming, added that Buffalo Bill’s would still host concerts and special events at its Star of the Desert Arena.

The company did not say when the hotel would be closing. Las Vegas insider Vegas Advantage broke the news Monday evening.

Hotel reservations for Buffalo Bill’s could be booked through the Primm Valley site and third-party vendors, but they do not show rooms as available after Sunday. Guests who try to book reservations at Buffalo Bill’s for after Sunday are redirected to Primm Valley Resort.

Primm Valley did not disclose in its announcement what would happen to workers employed at Buffalo Bill’s.

The resort was the final of three built by the Primm family and placed in the unincorporated Clark County town previously known as State Line.

Whiskey Pete’s, which shuttered in December, was first opened in 1977, followed by Primm Valley in 1990 and Buffalo Bill’s in 1994.

The hotel boasted 592 rooms at its opening (the Bellagio has nearly 4,000 rooms) and eventually expanded to 1,242 rooms.

Buffalo Bill’s utilized low prices and attractions to lure guests.

There was the Desperado roller coaster, which was the tallest, fastest coaster in the world when it opened in 1994; it sent visitors screaming 209 feet above the freeway right outside the resort.

The Star of the Desert Arena hosted major acts, including the Captain & Tennille in its opening year. It also booked Reba McEntire, Aretha Franklin and Snoop Dogg in 2009, according to the Las Vegas Sun.

The Sun wrote that year that the hotel also offered “$2 beers, $7 prime rib dinners and $25 shows” to guests who wanted a taste of old Las Vegas.

Buffalo Bill’s temporarily closed in March 2020 due to the pandemic and reopened in December 2022 but struggled to attract customers, like all hotels in Primm.

Visitors posted videos of vacant stores and restaurants in the Primm Outlet Mall and of vacant gaming floors.

Primm Valley did not provide information on what would happen to the Desperado or attractions inside the hotel such as the famed Bonnie & Clyde V-8 Ford, which the outlaws were riding in when they were fatally shot.

Affinity Gaming is hoping patrons will gravitate toward the last casino standing.

“We invite our guests to join us at Primm Valley where they will find the newest slots on our redesigned casino floor, beautifully appointed rooms, oasis pool experience, and wonderful dining,” their note read.

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen marries actor Hailee Steinfeld

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen and “Sinners” actor Hailee Steinfeld were married on Saturday in California, according to multiple news outlets.

Last year’s NFL MVP, who grew up on a cotton farm north of Fresno, announced the couple’s engagement last November in a romantic Instagram post that showed the two embracing, with Allen down on one knee in front of a rose-covered arch in Malibu.

In photos obtained by People magazine, the couple are pictured getting married in an outdoor ceremony underneath a drapery-lined arch with California native plants in the background. Steinfeld, 28, wore a silk strapless gown paired with sheer opera gloves and a long veil attached to her top knot. Allen wore a classic tuxedo with what appears to be a white flower pinned to his lapel.

In an interview with the Associated Press last December, Allen, 29, credited Steinfeld for his successful season, which saw the Bills reach the AFC Championship only to lose to the Kansas City Chiefs. “She’s been a huge part,” he said. “The morale, the support. When I get home, she’s my biggest fan, my biggest supporter. She’s just the best.”

Steinfeld, who received an Academy Award nomination in the Best Supporting Actress category in 2011 for the Coen Brothers’ “True Grit” and appeared in the Apple TV+ series “Dickinson,” emphasized the couple’s efforts to keep their relationship out of the public eye in an interview with Who What Wear.

“When you realize that so much is already out there in every other aspect of your life, you really learn to cherish the little that isn’t. It just makes things extra special, and it’s just for you,” she said.

That might explain why details of the wedding have been kept private despite Bills offensive lineman Dion Dawkins famously spilling the beans on “Good Morning Football.” (He later backpedaled on “The Rich Eisen Show”).

And now, with their wedding rings exchanged, the devoted Bills Mafia can focus on the next bit of bling: A Super Bowl ring.

Lord Buffalo cancels European tour, citing immigration issues

Texas psych-Americana band Lord Buffalo has canceled its upcoming European tour after it claims that drummer Yamal Said was taken off a plane by border patrol agents on Monday.

“We are heartbroken to announce we have to cancel our upcoming European tour. Our drummer, who is a Mexican citizen and lawful permanent resident of the United States (green card holder) was forcibly removed from our flight to Europe by Customs and Border Patrol at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport on Monday May 12,” the band said in a Wednesday social media post.

According to the group, Said has not been released from custody.

“We are currently working with an immigration lawyer to find out more information and to attempt to secure his release,” the band continued in its post. “We are devastated to cancel this tour, but we are focusing all of our energy and resources on Yamal’s safety and freedom. We are hopeful that this is a temporary setback and that it could be safe for us to reschedule this tour in the future.”

Lord Buffalo later updated the message to announce that Said has secured legal representation.

According to a CBP spokesperson, Said was detained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection while aboard a May 12 flight heading outside of the U.S. due to allegedly having an active arrest warrant. He was subsequently turned over to local law enforcement.

The Times has reached out to Lord Buffalo for comment.

The Texas band is not the first musical act to claim they have needed to postpone or cancel shows due to immigration issues in recent months.

In April, British singer FKA twigs announced in an Instagram post that she had to cancel series of concerts for the month in North America — including a slot at Coachella 2025 — due to “ongoing visa issues.”

Earlier this month, Chicago’s Michelada Fest, a Spanish-language music festival that had acts scheduled from across the globe, was canceled due to concerns over artists’ visas.

“Due to the uncertainty surrounding artist visas and the rapidly changing political climate, we’re no longer able to guarantee the full experience we had dreamed up for you with all your favorite artists,” the festival’s organizers explained in a statement. “Although we tried to push through, it became clear that we wouldn’t be able to deliver the full lineup as planned.”

The organizers would go on to write that, as an independent outfit, Michelada Fest “can’t afford to take on a big risk with so much uncertainty ahead.”

Grupo Firme, Anitta, Danny Ocean, Tokischa and Luis R. Conriquez were scheduled to perform at the July festival.
