“The top of the top in the romance/drama/comedy genre, and one of the best movies of all times [sic].”

Another elated watcher wrote a glowing second review: “I would have to say, personally, this is the greatest movie I have ever watched.

Further praise came from a third delighted viewer who admitted: “I love every single minute of this movie.”

Joe Wright’s cinematically gorgeous 2005 version of Pride and Prejudice is slated for arrival on BBC iPlayer this month, just in time for its 20th anniversary celebrations and synchronising with what would have been Jane Austen’s 250th birthday.

This cinematic rendition sparked debate among die-hard Pride and Prejudice aficionados, especially as it followed a decade after the BBC’s much-cherished 1995 series featuring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle as the definitive Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet.

Firth’s embodiment of Mr Darcy transcended the pages when he later mirrored the iconic role in Bridget Jones’s Diary, amassing an even wider fanbase and solidifying his portrayal as the ultimate Mr Darcy for many.

However, Matthew Macfadyen stepping into the prestigious shoes of Austen’s beloved hero for the 2005 film did stir some dissent among admirers, especially as the actor was known then for his work on Spooks.

Pride and Prejudice (2005) featured an all-star cast(Image: FOCUS FEATURES)

However, his performance alongside Pirates of the Caribbean and Bend It Like Beckham star Keira Knightley, who played Elizabeth Bennet, managed to win over even the most doubtful critics.

Wright’s Hollywood rendition boasted stunning cinematography, featuring expansive shots of the English countryside, including a memorable scene of Lizzy perched on a cliff in the Peak District.

Complementing the striking visuals was the enchanting score by Italian composer Dario Marianelli.

For those unfamiliar with Austen’s classic, Pride and Prejudice follows the spirited Lizzy and her sisters as they navigate societal expectations to secure their futures through marriage.

Despite their mother Mrs Bennet’s, portrayed by Brenda Blethyn of Vera fame, frantic attempts at matchmaking, several of the Bennet sisters do find a match.

Amidst all this, Lizzy defies convention by seeking a marriage based on love rather than wealth.

Her initial awkward interaction with Mr Darcy sets them both on a transformative journey that challenges their preconceived notions and changes them irrevocably.

Pride and Prejudice boasted an impressive cast including Rosamund Pike, the late Donald Sutherland, Carey Mulligan, Talulah Riley, Jena Malone, Tom Hollander and Rupert Friend.

The film is certainly worth revisiting before Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, which will feature Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet, Jack Lowden as Mr Darcy and Olivia Colman as Mrs Bennet.

Netflix has assured that the upcoming series will be a true-to-source, classic adaptation of the novel, with Dolly Alderton, author of Everything I Know About Love, handling the scriptwriting.

Filming for Netflix’s Pride and Prejudice is set to take place in the UK this year.

Pride and Prejudice (2005) will be streaming on the BBC iPlayer from May 26

BBC host can’t forget moment Baroness Bra Michelle Mone confessed to being a liar

BBC host Laura Kuenssberg has revealed the interview that “sticks” with her the most is when Michelle Mone confessed to being a liar.

Scots bra tycoon Mone spent two years fiercely denying through an army of lawyers any involvement with the firm PPE Medro, which had earned over £200million worth of Government contracts to supply face masks and surgical gowns during the Covid pandemic.

Married couple Doug Barrowman and Michelle Mone has been accused of wrongdoing.

BBC presenter Laura Kuenssberg says her interview with Mone is one that “sticks” with her.

But in 2023 it was revealed that the Tory life peer and her three adult children had received £29million from the company via her second husband Doug Barrowman.

That led to a “Prince Andrew-style” TV showdown with the politics presenter on her weekly show Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg.

Appearing alongside Barrowman, 60, Baroness Mone, 53, made the jaw-dropping confession: “I can’t see what we’ve done wrong. Lying to the press is not a crime.”

Now in a two-part BBC documentary The Rise and Fall of Michelle Mone to be shown next week, Laura, 48, said: “In the end they were bizarrely quite honest about not having told the truth. Which is quite a strange experience.

“Then as she so memorably said, ‘But Laura, it’s not a crime to lie’ That’s a phrase that will always stick with me.”

The controversy started when Lady Mone had used her government links to access a VIP Lane for fast track PPE procurement.

But the former owner of bra company Ultimo then aggressively denied for three years that she and Barrowman had any connections to the company PPE Medro.

When it was revealed that Mone and her family had personally benefitted from the contracts she announced she was stepping down from the House of Lords.

Questions were then asked in parliament by the then leader of the opposition Sir Keir Starmer about how nearly £30million had ended up in the bank account of the Scottish businesswoman.

Recalling before the build-up to the car-crash interview, Laura said: “They obviously knew they had been lying at the beginning of it. So they felt they were in this trap.

Carol Vorderman finally reveals real reason she ended friendship with Michelle Mone

“On the day (of the interview) the whole experience was eerily calm. There’s no question Michelle Mone and Doug Barrowman became the pantomime villains in the story of the huge shambles of what went wrong with PPE.

“For Michelle, being able to grab public attention was always something she had in spades during her business career but things went wrong for her and you can’t turn that attention off.”

Mone and Barrowman are currently being investigated by the National Crime Agency.

The couple continue to deny any wrongdoing.

*The Rise and Fall of Michelle Mone begins on BBC Scotland on Monday May 26 at 10pm and BBC Two on May 28 at 9pm. Both episodes are available on BBC iPlayer from Monday.

Dressed in black cycling shorts and a grey t-shirt, Sophie beamed as she cradled her growing bump. In the caption she wrote: “Sausage Pasta Wyburd-Kumar, growing steadily in my tummy and landing with us this autumn!!”

Sophie added: “P.S. writing recipes for a living when for 3 months all you want to eat is spinach and ricotta tortellini is no joke, but the little person in there will be very much worth it I’m sure. The person in there will be very much worth it I’m sure.”

The chef also shared some of her more unusual first trimester pregnancy cravings on social media including marmite and “frozen beige potato products”.

Fans and friends were quick to shower Sophie with lovely messages in the comments section. Fellow chef Alfie Steiner exclaimed: “Oh em geeee contractions!!!! They are going to be eating THE best food.”

He suggested that he might return to working in kitchens, leading to speculation that he could be stepping into Greg Wallace’s shoes on Masterchef.

“It’s going to stop at some point,” he admitted. “I’m going to have to do something.”

An insider revealed to The Sun: “Matt rose to the challenge of coming into Saturday Kitchen after it was previously hosted by another big name in the world of food, James Martin. He managed the feat of making it his own and almost making viewers forget who his predecessor was. Now Beeb bosses, and the show producers Banijay, will be hoping he can work the same magic on MasterChef.”

Hollyoaks legend signs up for huge new reality show on BBC after quitting soap

HOLLYOAKS legend Jamie Lomas has signed up for BBC’s Celebrity MasterChef after quitting the Channel 4 soap.

Jamie, 50, is best known for his long-running role as bad boy Warren Fox – but now he’s trading street brawls for saucepans in the hit cooking competition.

Filming has already wrapped, and insiders say viewers will get to see a very different side to the actor.

A source told The Sun: “Jamie was looking to do something where fans could meet the real him – not just Hollyoaks hardman Warren Fox!

“He’s actually quite good in the kitchen and he’s really competitive too. It’s already been filmed but he’s not telling anyone how far he got.”

Grace Dent will be judging alongside John Torode, replacing Gregg Wallace after he was accused of “lewd and inappropriate behaviour” on the MasterChef set.

Jamie will join the likes of Love Island star Chris Hughes, Blue singer Antony Costa, Corrie actress Katie McGlynn and RuPaul’s Drag Race star Ginger Johnson when the hit show returns later this year.

The BBC has been contacted for comment.

Jamie has also made headlines for his offbeat acting choices, including a divisive role in Jafaican, the Peter Andre-fronted film that raised eyebrows among critics and fans alike.

While the soap star hasn’t come under fire, Peter wears a dreadlock wig and puts on a Jamaican accent in toe-curling scenes.

Jamie is set to appear in a film alongside Katie Price too, where he plays Jack The Ripper.

And he’s going to make a shock return to Hollyoaks, as excitement for its 30th anniversary ramps up.

Jamie quit the soap last year after a stint spanning almost two decades.

Kym Marsh gushes over ex husband Jamie Lomas’ new baby after he welcomes daughter with new fiance

Viewers watched his character Warren flee abroad after leaving Mercedes McQueen behind with her children, unwilling to force them all to live on the run.

Jamie briefly returned last month for a flashback episode, which we were first to reveal

But will return for ANOTHER short stint on the show, which will no doubt delight fans.

A source told us: “Jamie’s returning for a limited stint later this month.

“He loves the show and could fit it in so jumped at the chance. It will see

“Warren return to the village in the present day but who will he come face to face with and what will happen?

“It’s definitely going to be a treat for fans.”

BBC adding ‘masterpiece’ Western movie that’s perfect for Yellowstone fans

The movie wowed audiences and critics alike upon release

An acclaimed Western flick, featuring the likes of Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst, is set to hit screens later this month, reports Surrey Live.

The film, which first graced cinemas in 2021, has garnered top-notch reviews from both critics and cinema-goers alike.

One glowing critique on Rotten Tomatoes stated: “A deeply symbolic movie presented through the genre of a Western.”

Another viewer enthused: “This movie may be hard to watch at times but it is worth it.”

They added: “Great atmosphere, an incredibly compelling story, amazing acting and characters that are genuinely interesting and multidimensional.”

Meanwhile, another fan described the film as: “The Power of the Dog is a slow-burning masterpiece of tension and repression.”

They continued: “Benedict Cumberbatch delivers a career-best performance as the menacing yet vulnerable rancher Phil Burbank, while Kirsten Dunst and Kodi Smit-McPhee shine in this haunting psychological drama.

“Director Jane Campion crafts a visually stunning, emotionally devastating film that lingers long after the credits roll.”

BBC iPlayer will be adding The Power of the Dog to its roster at the end of the month, available for viewers at no extra cost.

Based on Thomas Savage’s 1967 novel, the film promises to be a riveting experience.

The plot of The Power of the Dog delves into the tense dynamics between rugged rancher Phil Burbank (Cumberbatch), his sister-in-law Rose Gordon (Dunst), and her son Peter Gordon (Kodi Smit-McPhee).

Set in the 1920s on a Montana ranch, the film follows Rose’s spiral into alcoholism after being humiliated by her brother-in-law Phil.

Phil had previously accused Rose of marrying his brother George Burbank (Plemons) for financial gain, adding fuel to the fire.

Viewers are given a glimpse into Phil’s past as he forms a connection with Peter, who returns from medical school for the holidays.

Despite having previously ridiculed Peter, it seems the two manage to overcome their differences.

The Power of the Dog is a blend of Western family drama and psychological thriller.

Other members of the cast include Thomasin McKenzie known for The Hobbit, Keith Carradine from Dexter and Madam Secretary, Frances Conroy from Six Feet Under, Peter Carroll from Sleeping Beauty and Alice Englert from Beautiful Creatures and Ginger and Rosa.

Coronation Street star Colson Smith reveals his new BBC job after ITV brutal exit

Coronation Street star Colson Smith has announced his first job since being axed from the ITV soap just days after his onscreen death was aired

It was sad week in Coronation Street this week, as Craig Tinker (Colson Smith) was killed off after a brutal assault in a tear jerking episode. It was announced earlier this year that the star would be leaving the soap – and there wasn’t a dry eye in sight when he left the cobbles for good on Wednesday night.

Colson was axed from the show last year, and just days after his tragic onscreen death, he’s taken to Instagram to announce his new job with BBC Radio Leeds.

Taking to his Instagram to thank followers for all the love this week, Colson, 26, wrote: “Thank you so much for all the love this week! I really appreciate it!”

He then had big news to share with his followers. Alongside a picture of him outside a BBC building, he wrote: “There’s a few exciting things going off!! BUT one thing I can tell you for now, is that I’m joining the team at BBC Radio Leeds this summer!!! Catch ya on the wireless in Yorkshire!!”

Colson is no stranger to speaking to a mic, as he fronts the On The Sofa with Colson, Jack and Ben podcast alongside cast mates and besties, Jack P. Shepherd and Ben Price who play David Platt and Nick Tilsley in the long running ITV soap.

Fans were overjoyed at the news, as they took to the comments to congratulate the star. “Go Colson!” exclaimed one fan, while another excited follower penned: “That’s exciting ekkk!”

A third devastated Corrie fan penned: “The last few episodes have been amazing. So sad you’re gone!! Wishing you all the best and look forward to watching your next journey.”

Earlier this week, Colson joined Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley on the This Morning sofa to chat about his exit, where he spoke about the “hard” moment he learnt he’d been given the axe.

Recalling his meeting with producer Kate Brooks, the star said: “Getting told is hard, hearing the words – I tried really hard not to put the words into her mouth. As soon as I knew, I was at peace with what was going on.” Despite asking to be killed off from the soap, Colson has also revealed he had no idea how brutal it would be.”

Although some actors would be gutted to hear their character was going to be killed off, Colson said if there was a way he wanted to go, that would be it.

“For me to go, I would want to leave. I would want to die, I would want the door to be shut, so then I can kind of know in my head that Corrie has been this, Corrie has done that, and it is now done, and Craig’s journey is over,” he told Ben and Cat.

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and ITV X.

They shared a kiss after a sweaty workout before driving off together.

Adam split from his ex Beverley Sharp in 2022 and since then hasn’t been publicly linked to anyone else romantically.

On Friday Adam looked happy as he cosied up to the red-haired woman while wearing an all-black gym outfit.

Meanwhile his close friend wore a khaki jacket over a grey top and floral leggings.

Adam’s character Ian Beale debuted in 1985 during the show’s first-ever episode.

He played a major role in the BBC soap’s 40th anniversary episodes when his wife Cindy’s Christmas Day attacker was revealed.

They couple were reunited after Adam’s hiatus from the soap in 2021.

When he returned to Albert Square last year, Ian was reunited with his presumed dead wife Cindy (Michelle Collins), who was revealed to have been in witness protection.

Throughout his long tenure in Walford, Ian has been married six times to five women and had two failed engagements.

He has also fathered three children and acted as a father figure to much younger half-brother, Ben Mitchell.

Scottish Cup final: BBC Sport Scotland pundits give their predictions

Rachel Corsie, Scotland captain

Inevitably there has to be goals. While it’s hard to see any other outcome beyond Celtic winning against Aberdeen, especially when in Glasgow, there is always a tiny bit of optimism when it comes to fandom!

That said, making it through extra-time and enjoying a couple of goals is the best I could manage.

For a team that knows finding success on cup final day so well, Aberdeen will need to be ready to lay bodies on the line and hope that fortune favours them for any other likely outcome.

Prediction: Celtic win on penalties, 2-2 AET

Leanne Crichton, former Scotland midfielder

I anticipate a fiercely contested Scottish Cup clash between Celtic and Aberdeen, with both sides bringing high intensity and emotion to the occasion.

Aberdeen will no doubt be determined to end their season on a high and I expect them to throw everything at the game in search of a statement victory. However, Celtic’s experience and quality, particularly in big matches under Brendan Rodgers, should ultimately shine through.

With their attacking depth and composure in key moments, I’m backing Celtic to deliver another trademark Hampden performance and lift the trophy once again.

Prediction: Aberdeen 1-3 Celtic

Ncuti, 32, has left the long-running drama after ‘woke’ storylines have seen ratings plummet in recent years.

The actor is off after just two series with no replacement likely for the Time Lord’s regeneration on May 31.

Now, the actor is quickly moving on as he has just announced his next project on social media.

He will stay in the upcoming satirical black comedy film called The Roses.

The star took to his Instagram stories as he displayed the poster of the Hollywood movie, alongside a simple rose and red heart emoji.

It features a completely star-studded cast of Hollywood A-listers and Oscar winners.

Benedict Cumberbatch, Olivia Colman, and I, Tonya star Allison Janney all have leading roles in the new flick.

While former Saturday Night Live favourites Andy Samberg and Kate McKinnon will also have feature roles.

The news comes after Ncuti backed out of announcing the UK’s jury scores in last weekend’s Eurovision Song Contest.

He pulled out of his commitments just 48 hours before he was due to appear in front of 160million people.

Doctor Who’s wokest ever lead star Ncuti Gatwa axed after just two series with show set to be paused after ratings nosedive

At the time, the corporation confirmed he would no longer be involved, citing “unforeseen circumstances” and he was replaced by Sophie Ellis-Bextor.

This was amid controversy among some at Israel’s inclusion in the global singing competition and Ncuti stepped aside moments after Israel qualified for the grand final.

A TV insider said: “If the final nail wasn’t already in the coffin, it was well and truly hammered in after that.

“Bosses were incredibly disappointed. Ncuti, as the Doctor, is one of the corporation’s most high-profile faces.

European Gymnastics Championships 2025: Dates, venue & how to watch on BBC

The mixed team final will make its competition debut at the Artistic European Gymnastics Championships.

The championships, in Leipzig, Germany, begin on Monday.

British Olympian Ruby Evans believes the mixed team event – which has also been added to the Los Angeles Olympics programme for 2028 – is an “exciting” addition.

Evans says it “adds a different challenge and a bit of variety to the championships”.

But what is it and how does it work?

One female and one male gymnast from each federation will compete in the event – in which scores in individual events are added together to make a team total.

Female gymnasts will score on vault, balance beam and floor, while male gymnasts compete on floor, parallel and horizontal bars – and the 16 mixed teams with the best scores in individual qualification go through to the final. The make-up of the teams is not decided in advance – it is determined by the qualification scores.

Jake Jarman, an Olympic floor bronze medallist for Team GB in Paris last year, said: “It’s a great way to bring men’s and women’s gymnastics together. It’s going to be really interesting to see the mixed team event debut and see how it goes down with the audience and fans.”

You can watch the mixed team final live on BBC iPlayer from 15:50 BST on Wednesday, 28 May.

Prince William unveils new BBC documentary on ‘most dangerous job in world’

Prince William has recognised the sacrifices of environmental rangers across the globe ahead of a new documentary series examining “the most dangerous job in the world“.

The Prince of Wales and his United for Wildlife programme today launched the six-part series titled ‘Guardians’, following the lives of rangers and the vital yet unseen work they do to protect our planet.

William, who helped create the programme and introduces each episode, said he hoped to help nature’s wardens be “valued, respected, seen” and promote the “wonderful” regions they protect.

The series features rangers who do “one of the most dangerous jobs on the planet”, said William, from safeguarding snow leopards in the Indian Himalayas, defending marine life in Mexico’s Sea of Cortez, to protecting elephants and gorillas in the Central African Republic.

The prince described Sir David Attenborough as the “inspiration” and said he hoped to emulate his success in storytelling, just as the broadcaster and naturalist’s films drew viewers’ attention to remote parts of the globe.

Speaking this week in London ahead of the first episode being aired on BBC Earth’s YouTube, William paid tribute to the 1,400 rangers who have been killed in the line of duty in the last decade – amounting to two a week.

He said: “Many people think, you know, being a soldier, being in the emergency services, that these drops are dangerous, and the lives of the line.

“I don’t think people realise it’s the same for these guys and girls around the world. And you know, but 1,400 rangers have died in the last 10 years. That’s about two a week. And it’s just they’re unseen and unheard of.”

He added: “Any progress, any future we want for the natural world, has to come from the ranger community being valued, respected, seen.”

New six to 10-minute episodes will be unveiled each week, with first-hand accounts of the lives of rangers and nature protectors as they urgently work to conserve biodiversity and ecosystems.

William has voiced the trailer and individual episode introductions, aiming to showcase these unsung heroes and highlight how their work impacts us all.

‘What’s that bang?’ Chilling moment sound of doomed Titan sub imploding heard from support ship

THIS is the chilling moment the doomed Titan sub imploded as it was captured on video from its own support ship.

Footage reveals the sound of when OceanGate’s submersible catastrophically failed during its descent to the Titanic wreck in June 2023.

The haunting video was obtained by the BBC and presented to the US Coast Guard’s Marine Board of Investigation.

It shows Wendy Rush – wife of OceanGate boss Stockton Rush – staring at a computer used to receive messages from the Titan when a deep metallic thud rings out.

Wendy, visibly startled, freezes before glancing up and asking the crew: “What was that bang?”

Seconds later, a message arrives from the sub: “dropped two wts” – a reference to the Titan shedding weights to control its dive.

But the timing of the message was tragically misleading.

According to investigators, the sub had already imploded.

The sound reached the surface faster than the delayed text, giving the false impression all was well.

All five people onboard were killed instantly when the vessel collapsed under immense pressure at a depth of around 3,300m – just 90 minutes into the £195,000-a-head journey.

The doomed expedition claimed the lives of CEO Stockton Rush, British explorer Hamish Harding, French Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet, and British-Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his 19-year-old son Suleman.

Incredible 3D scan of Titanic shipwreck reveals TRUE story of its final hours

A BBC documentary, in which the footage is featured, will also reveal chilling new findings – including that the Titan’s carbon fibre hull began failing a full year before the fatal dive.

Lieutenant Commander Katie Williams from the USCG said: “Delamination at dive 80 was the beginning of the end.

“And everyone that stepped onboard the Titan after dive 80 was risking their life.”

The documentary details how carbon fibre, an unconventional choice for deep-sea vessels, started to separate in 2022.

On that dive, passengers heard a loud bang, but Rush reportedly reassured them it was “the sub shifting in its frame.”

The USCG has since confirmed that noise was a sign the hull was beginning to break apart.

Despite warnings from experts and former OceanGate staff – one calling the sub an “abomination” – Titan continued making dives.

Deep-sea explorer Victor Vescovo admitted: “I specifically told them that it was simply a matter of time before it failed catastrophically.”

Businessman Oisin Fanning, who was onboard for the last two successful dives, said: “If you’re asking a simple question: ‘Would I go again knowing what I know now?’ – the answer is no.”

The mangled wreckage of the Titan was later recovered from the Atlantic seabed, along with clothing, stickers and business cards.

The USCG has confirmed “presumed human remains” were found and matched to the victims.

Christine Dawood, who lost her husband Shahzada and son Suleman, told the BBC the tragedy had changed her forever.

“I don’t think that anybody who goes through loss and such a trauma can ever be the same.”

The harrowing footage comes as the USCG prepares to release its final report later this year, with legal fallout already beginning.

In April, billionaire heiress Karen Lo launched a £1million lawsuit after her trip aboard Titan was axed.

The Hong Kong businesswoman, worth around £758million, paid £680,000 for the once-in-a-lifetime voyage – only for it to be cancelled after the sub was struck by lightning in 2018.

She was promised priority rebooking, but after the sub imploded in 2023, she demanded her money back.

Lo is now suing Henry Cookson’s ultra-luxury travel firm, arguing it broke the contract.

The company denies wrongdoing, insisting she declined to use her credit for alternative trips and that the refund policy was clear.

Meanwhile, earlier this year, a 20-second audio clip recorded 900 miles from the implosion site emerged, capturing what experts believe was the actual moment the Titan was crushed.

The eerie recording revealed the “acoustic signature” of the vessel’s final seconds.

Rescue hopes were initially high when Titan vanished from sonar on June 18, 2023.

But days later, its shattered remains were discovered scattered across the ocean floor – an area the size of six football pitches.

The Titan was last heard from at 10.47am with the message: “dropped two wts.”

Six seconds later, it vanished from sonar.

The support ship Polar Prince sent a final message at 10.49am: “lost tracking.”

Communication was never re-established.

OceanGate later issued a statement: “We again offer our deepest condolences to the families of those who died on June 18, 2023… It would be inappropriate to respond further while we await the agencies’ reports.”

The investigation continues.

How the Titan tragedy unfolded

By Katie Davis, Chief Foreign Reporter (Digital)

FIVE men plunged beneath the surface of the North Atlantic in a homemade sub in a bid to explore the Titanic wreckage.

Four passengers paid £195,000 each to go on the sub, with the fifth member of the trip being a crew member.

But what was supposed to be a short trip spiralled into days of agony as the doomed Titan vanished without a trace on June 18, 2023.

The daring mission had been months in the making – and almost didn’t happen at the hands of harsh weather conditions in Newfoundland, Canada.

In a now chilling Facebook post, passenger Hamish Harding wrote: “Due to the worst winter in Newfoundland in 40 years, this mission is likely to be the first and only manned mission to the Titanic in 2023.

“A weather window has just opened up and we are going to attempt a dive tomorrow.”

It would be his final Facebook post.

The following morning, he and four others – led by Stockton Rush – began the 12,5000ft descent towards the bottom of the Atlantic.

But as it made its way down into the depths, the vessel lost all contact with its mother ship on the surface, the Polar Prince.

It sparked a frantic four-day search for signs of life, with the hunt gripping the entire world.

There was hope that by some miracle, the crew was alive and desperately waiting to be saved.

But that sparked fears rescue teams faced a race against time as the passengers only had a 96-hour oxygen supply when they set out, which would be quickly dwindling.

Then, when audio of banging sounds was detected under the water, it inspired hope that the victims were trapped and signalling to be rescued.

It heartbreakingly turned out that the banging noises were likely either ocean noises or from other search ships, the US Navy determined.

Countries around the world deployed their resources to aid the search, and within days the Odysseus remote-operated vehicle (ROV) was sent down to where the ghostly wreck of the Titanic sits.

The plan was for the ROV to hook onto the sub and bring it up 10,000ft, where it would meet another ROV before heading to the surface.

But any hopes of a phenomenal rescue were dashed when Odysseus came across a piece of debris from the sub around 1,600ft from the Titanic.

The rescue mission tragically turned into a salvage task, and the heartbroken families of those on board were told the devastating news.

It was confirmed by the US Coast Guard that the sub had suffered a “catastrophic implosion”.

Sky News presenter quits job and reveals he’s leaving London after 12-year career

A TV presenter has surprisingly announced he’s leaving Sky News next week.

The former LBC and BBC Newsnight broadcaster announced he’s quit the job after a 12-year career in journalism.

Sky News journalist Matthew Thompson has quit

Matthew Thompson said he’s leaving London for family reasons and is moving into a different industry entirely.

He wrote on X: “Some personal news. In a couple of weeks, I am leaving Sky News. And indeed, leaving London, and journalism altogether.

“It’s not a decision I’ve taken lightly, but it’s one that’s best for me and my family. I’ll be moving to Edinburgh, and into the world of finance.

“I won’t subject you all to a self-indulgent run through of my career highlights. But suffice to say it has been the privilege of my life to spend these last 12 years or so as a journalist.

“To work with some of the best in the business, and to talk to all of you.

“Thank you to all the people who made it possible, and to all the people who let me tell their stories along the way. I’ve always tried to make it about you, rather than me.

“I hope I managed that, and that I did the privilege justice. As for next steps… I can say more soon.”

Most recently, Matthew worked as Sky News‘ Home & Political Correspondent.

He continued: “I hope this isn’t goodbye. It may be possible to keep some level of engagement on here in my new gig.

“For now, thank you. I’ve learned so much from reading and speaking with you all over the years.

“It’s made me a better journalist, and a better person. I’ll miss it terribly.”

Call the Midwife star lands lead role in huge 10-part BBC Jane Austen drama

The actress best known for playing Sister Frances will lead the cast of the major BBC series airing next year

Call the Midwife favourite Ella Broccoleri has landed the lead role in BBC1’s upcoming Jane Austen drama The Other Bennett Sister. Ella, 35, played kindly nun Sister Frances in the hit series for four years from 2019, when she was written out suddenly after deciding to leave to pursue other roles.

In the plot she was knocked off her bike in the snow during a birth emergency in the 2022 Christmas special, suffering a shoulder injury. Fans were gutted when she was then sent to the Mother House to recuperate, and never returned to Poplar. One declared at the time: “If Sister Frances leaves I swear to God I’ll sue someone at Call the Midwife.”

As well as Sister Frances, Ella has also played the role of a young nun in historical drama, The Last Kingdom. And the actress also donned a habit for a third time as she appeared alongside Olivia Colman in Paddington in Peru.

Now the actress has been cast as Mary Bennet, sister of Pride and Prejudice’s lead character Elizabeth and she is also starring in upcoming ITV royal drama The Lady.

The Other Bennet Siste r is a fresh spin around the ballroom for one of Jane Austen’s most unassuming characters: Mary Bennet – the seemingly unremarkable and overlooked middle sister in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice .

Awkward, anxious, preachy, full of fact and a terrible singer, Mary is overlooked by her mother and seems destined to have an empty dance card for the rest of her life – until she takes matters into her own hands.

The Other Bennet Sister, a 10-parter to air next year from production company Bad Wolf, gives Mary Bennet the epic love story nobody predicted for her. It takes her from her family home in Meryton to the soirees of Regency London and the peaks and vales of the Lake District – all in search of independence, romance and, most elusive of all, self-love and acceptance.

Writer Sarah Quintrell says: “I’m thrilled to be telling the story of Mary – the other Bennet sister – exploring what it is to come of age when you’re the odd one out. It’s a joy to be adapting Janice Hadlow’s brilliant take on such a beloved classic and to have found our home at the BBC.”

Saying she herself had been an “awkward, anxious” teen, she added: “I grew up watching the BBC’s wonderful Austen adaptations. It’s the stuff every writer dreams of and I can’t wait to bring this beautiful story to screen – not least, for all the Marys out there.”

Ella Broccoleri
Ella will play the role of Mary Bennet, the gawky sister from Pride & Prejudice who is given her own happy ending

BBC drama boss Lindsay Salt said: “The BBC’s Pride and Prejudice will forever be a classic moment in television history, and it’s incredibly exciting to return to Jane Austen’s irresistible world and go even further than before – this time in the footsteps of The Other Bennet Sister , Mary. We fell in love with Sarah’s adaptation because it’s a true underdog story packed full of heart, wit and charm, and a chance to explore Austen in a playful, original and heartfelt way.”

Last year Ella appeared in ITV’s Passenger and in the films Polite Society and Joy. She is currently filming The Lady, based on the story of Jane Andrews, a former royal dresser who worked for the Duchess of York who was later convicted of murder.

In a post uploaded to the account on Tuesday afternoon, fans noticed that a for sale/auction sign had been placed on the side of the Queen Vic – suggesting that current owners Linda Carter and the Knight family are set to lose the pub in a shock new storyline.

Taking to the EastEnders Reddit, many fans suggested their theories as to how Linda and the Knights could lose the pub – with some believing that George Knight (played by Colin Salmon) could have something to do with it.

One wrote: “There was a rumour before that George was going to mess up the insurance on the pub and they were going to be forced to sell it, so I wonder if that’ll be what’s happening here.”

A second asked: “Interesting. I wonder if Linda and the Knights are selling the Vic in an auction.”

A third questioned: “The Knights were so happy to get it back, I wonder why they’ll lose it?”

“Perhaps they can’t afford the Vic, and I’m predicting if Phil and Linda do get closer, like a lot of people are saying that he’ll bid on it and own it while they run it,” this person speculated.

This viewer suggested: “Oh dear. Why do I have a sinking feeling it’ll go to the new Mitchells?”

The Sun have reached out to EastEnders reps for comment.

The iconic pub at the heart of Albert Square underwent a recent transformation following the devastating explosion that rocked Walford.

With a shiny new sign, fresh windows, and a sleek new front, the Queen Vic was ready to welcome punters once again.

EastEnders viewers know that the iconic Queen Vic pub went up in flames as part of the show’s 40th anniversary last month.

Fans were left horrified as the huge explosion ripped through the square, which resulted in Martin Fowler (James Bye) dying in the arms of his ex-wife Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner).

The Queen Vic pub was destroyed as the windows broke, ceiling structure beams fell down, walls collapsed and upstairs furniture crushed residents.

The Knight family were forced to move out until renovations were complete after they received the good news that the insurance would be paying out.

BBC TV star opens up on neurodiversity battle as she admits ‘I have ADHD’

Welsh star Gwyneth Keyworth stars opposite Timothy Spall in Death Valley as copper Janie Mallowan. But the actress says she’d make a terrible real-life detective due to her ADHD.

Being neurodivergent has its complications – actress Gwyneth Keyworth recently admitted that her condition is sometimes difficult to handle.

Gwyneth Keyworth, whose credits include Game Of Thrones, Hidden and the West End production of To Kill A Mockingbird stars opposite Timothy Spall in BBC One‘s new drama, Death Valley, which blends nail-biting suspense, crime and comedy.

Timothy Spall needs no introduction. From embodying Peter Pettigrew in Harry Potter to portraying acclaimed artist JM Turner in Mr Turner, the BAFTA-winning actor is a true screen chameleon. But in the BBC ’s new six-part series Death Valley, Timothy is swapping drama for comedy.

Gwyneth, 34, admits she was surprised Timothy was able to tap into the show’s comedic tone. “I hadn’t seen him do much comedy, but he’s really funny,” she says. “It was a delight and an honour to work with him.”

In Death Valley, Gwyneth plays detective Janie Mallowan, and when Janie’s investigation into the apparent suicide of a businessman leads her to John’s door, the case – and her career – take an odd turn.

Off-screen, however, Gwyneth, 30, confesses she couldn’t be more different to Janie. “I’m definitely not built for detective work,” says Gwyneth. “I have ADHD, I can’t keep track of anything!”

Timothy, on the other hand, plays John Chapel, a retired actor who starred in fictional detective TV show Caesar, and who now lives in semi-reclusive anonymity – talking mostly to a stray cat and nursing a slightly inflated ego.

“He’s itching to use his psychological skills as an actor, but he’s conceited about it,” Timothy, 68, says. “ It’s nice to poke fun at certain aspects of actors, like their overinflated views of themselves. John really thinks he’s a serious intellect.”

But there’s more to John’s eccentricities than meets the eye. “He’s frustrated but he’s pretending he isn’t,” Timothy says. “We eventually find out why he really retired and why he feels this way.”

To bring John to life, Timothy borrowed from a host of real-life actors – though he’s tight-lipped about who inspired the quirks. “It’s quite a long list of excellent actors who have played various characters,” he says. Over six episodes, the pair delve into several mysteries, each one drawing them closer as allies.

“They’re both eccentric characters and incredibly clever,” says Timothy. “They do a great job as detectives. There’s a huge generational gap between them – but not emotionally. They have a sibling quality. They’re both really childish.”

For Gwyneth, Janie and John are more alike than viewers may think. “They’re both slightly peculiar people who are grieving something,” she explains.

“They find it hard to see each other’s faults because they know they have the same. They’re a little pedantic and tunnel-minded but their friendship is what brings them out of loneliness. They’ve been looking for someone to reach out to.”

That emotional connection plays a key role in grounding the show’s otherwise whimsical tone. “He doesn’t patronise Janie,” Timothy adds. “It’s almost like a meeting of the souls. There’s a lot of hidden affection in their relationship.”

However, much like John, Janie is keeping her own secrets. Producer Madeline Addy hints there are deeper layers to Janie. “There’s one big whodunnit throughout the show that involves Janie. It seeds itself in the six episodes. So there’s quite a lot going on,” says Madeline.

Timothy, meanwhile, enjoyed the pace of shooting the show. “It felt like filming a new movie every week,” he says. For all the on-screen tension and mystery, filming for Death Valley in Wales was anything but bleak, giving Gwyneth the opportunity to return to her roots. “It’s nice to be home, even if it rains,” she says.

Still, even that couldn’t be guaranteed. Series creator Paul Doolan – best known for Bloods – learned the hard way not to rely on the Welsh weather. He explains, “We needed torrential rain for one big scene and it was like Barbados!”

Despite the curveball, Paul was determined to inject some comedy into the murder-mystery formula. “A lot of modern murder shows are relentlessly grim. We just wanted a bit of comedy,” he says.

The Death Valley line-up includes a string of familiar faces

That insight partly came from his time on Bloods, where he worked with real paramedics. “They’ve seen the worst of everything, and yet they’re always joking,” he says. “It’s how people cope, it comes into every career.”

To capture the uniquely Welsh sense of humour, Paul enlisted comedian and writer Sian Harries. “That freed things up. It heightened everything,” he says. Gwyneth agrees, “Sian’s additions really made it feel Welsh and true to life.”

On set, Timothy kept spirits high, sometimes spoiling Gwyneth’s composure. “There was one scene where he skipped down the stairs and I just lost it,” she says.

Their rapport wasn’t built from scratch as Gwyneth had previously worked with Timothy’s actor son Rafe in To Kill A Mockingbird. But they’re not the only familiar faces in Death Valley.

Gavin & Stacey stars Melanie Walters and Steffan Rhodri, The Pact’s Alexandria Riley and Car Share actress Sian Gibson ensure the show’s supporting characters are just as colourful – and funny.

With a smart script, stunning scenery and a funny and fresh take on detective drama, Death Valley sits between Broadchurch and Only Murders In The Building – but with a distinctive Welsh flavour.

Gary Lineker leaves BBC amid anti-Semitism row, pro-Palestinian comments | Football News

Britain’s top football host will not front 2026 World Cup coverage and is ‘bowing out by mutual agreement’ after backlash to a social media post about Zionism.

Gary Lineker, a former England captain and the face of football on British television for more than two decades, will leave the BBC, the public broadcaster said in a statement on Monday.

Lineker, 64, had been due to cover the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the BBC, but his early departure comes after he apologised last week for sharing a social media post about Zionism which featured a picture of a rat, historically used as an anti-Semitic insult.

Lineker said that he deleted the posts after learning of the offensive references.

According to multiple British media reports, the high-profile host is “bowing out by mutual agreement”.

He rose to become the BBC’s highest-paid star after presenting its Match of the Day (MOTD) highlights show for 25 years. The BBC announced last November that he would step down from MOTD this year, but carry on working for it until 2026.

“Gary has acknowledged the mistake he made. Accordingly, we have agreed he will step back from further presenting after this season,” BBC director general Tim Davie said in a statement.

Lineker repeated his apology on Monday, saying he would never consciously repost anything anti-Semitic.

“I recognise the error and upset that I caused, and reiterate how sorry I am,” he said. “Stepping back now feels like the responsible course of action.”

Voicing Palestinian support

In recent years, Lineker’s desire to put forward his political views on social media has caused headaches for the BBC, which has strict rules on impartiality.

He was temporarily taken off air in 2023 after he criticised the previous government’s immigration policy on social media. In 2018, he opposed Brexit and called for a second referendum.

But it was Lineker’s support for the Palestinians affected by the war on Gaza that most recently brought him into conflict with the BBC.

Lineker had already caused friction at the public broadcaster when he recently said Israel was to blame for the origins of the Gaza conflict, because it turned the occupied territory into an “outdoor prison”.

Speaking on May 9 in an interview with The Telegraph at the Football Business Awards, just days before he was accused of the anti-Semitic social post on X, Lineker expressed that his issues are with the Israeli government rather than Jewish people.

“Obviously, October 7 was awful, but it’s very important to know your history and to study the massacres that happened prior to this, many of them against the Palestinian people,” he said in the interview with The Telegraph, which was published last Thursday, on May 15.

“Yes, Israelis have a right to defend themselves. But it appears that Palestinians don’t – and that is where it’s wrong. Palestinians are caged in this outdoor prison in Gaza, and now it’s an outdoor prison that they’re bombing,” Lineker added.

In the same interview, the TV host also disputed whether Israel could justifiably argue that it was still acting in self-defence. “I understand that they needed to avenge, but I don’t think they’ve helped their own hostage situation at all,” Lineker said.

“People say it’s a complex issue, but I don’t think it is. It’s inevitable that the Israeli occupation was going to cause massive problems, and I just feel for the Palestinians.”

The former striker played for England for eight years until 1992 and had been a top scorer for Leicester City, Everton and Tottenham Hotspur in the 1980s and early 1990s.

He is also the co-founder of a podcasting production business, Goalhanger, which makes series such as the podcasts The Rest Is History and The Rest Is Football.

Lineker will leave his role at the BBC on Sunday after his final episode of Match of the Day.

What was Gary Lineker’s controversial Instagram post that was ‘final straw’ for BBC bosses?

Former England footballer and Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker is expected to leave the BBC by mutual agreement, amid escalating criticism surrounding his recent social media activity.

The fallout began last Monday after Lineker, 64, shared a pro-Palestinian video on Instagram that included a rat emoji which is a symbol historically used in Nazi propaganda to dehumanize Jewish people. The post drew widespread condemnation and was quickly deleted. Lineker issued an apology, but the controversy continued to intensify throughout the week.

Pressure on the broadcaster increased on Thursday after The Telegraph published a revealing interview in which Lineker expanded on his criticism of Israel’s actions and appeared to take aim at senior figures within the BBC.

According to sources, plans for Lineker to lead BBC coverage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup have now been scrapped. His early departure from the broadcaster is expected to be confirmed today.

The Match of the Day star, who is the highest-paid presenter at the BBC apologised for sharing a video an anti-Zionism video. The post featured a picture of a rat, which has historically been used as an antisemitic insult, referring to language used in Nazi Germany to characterise Jews.

Gary immediately deleted the post after realising the significance of the symbol, according to his agent. Last Tuesday afternoon, he also issued a statement in which he “apologised unreservedly” for his “mistake”.

“On Instagram I reposted material which I have since learned contained offensive references,” he said in a statement. “I very much regret these references. “I would never knowingly share anything antisemitic. It goes against everything I believe in.”

The Match of the Day presenter said he deleted the post “as soon as I became aware of the issue. Whilst I strongly believe in the importance of speaking out on humanitarian issues, including the tragedy unfolding in Gaza, I also know that how we do so matters,” Lineker continued.

Gary apologised for any offense caused

“I take full responsibility for this mistake. That image does not reflect my views. It was an error on my part for which I apologise unreservedly,” he concluded.

Gary had been due to leave the BBC after the 2026 World Cup but the long-standing Match of the Day host appears ready to bring an early end to his time with the broadcaster. The seasoned presenter has quit amid the backlash to a social media post on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

He reshared content from the group Palestine Lobby, prompting claims from Campaign Against Antisemitism that they would be lodging a complaint.

Tim Davie, director general of the BBC, previously issued a response to the backlash. “The BBC’s reputation is held by everyone and when someone makes a mistake, it costs us,” he said.

Back in 2023, Lineker was taken off the air for an episode of Match of the Day following comments about Conservative government language.

“We take far fewer refugees than other major European countries,” he wrote. “This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s, and I’m out of order?”

In a recent interview with the BBC’s Amol Rajan, Lineker questioned the Beeb’s social media guidelines. “The impartiality rules were for people in news and current affairs. They have subsequently changed,” he said.

“But that left people like me, who has always given his honest opinions about things. Then they suddenly changed them and you have to go, ‘Oh, I’ve got to be impartial now’. It doesn’t make any sense.

“Why worry about the people who don’t like you. This is the mistake the BBC makes. The BBC tries to appease the people that hate the BBC. The people who always attack the licence fee. They worry far too much about that, rather than worrying about the people who love the BBC.”

“Why shouldn’t I have an opinion on things?” Lineker asked in the same interview with Rajan. “I’ve always been strong on humanitarian issues and always will be, and that’s me. The goalposts were massively moved because it was never an issue until, suddenly, this point.

“It was always stipulated in the BBC guidelines that in terms of impartiality, it was for people who work in news and current affairs. I am very, very thoughtful about what I say. They took me off air and it was a silly overreaction.”

Good Morning Britain staff left in fear as ITV show to face major change

ITV’s Good Morning Britain has been on the air since 2014 and has boosted the profiles of the likes of Susanna Reid and Piers Morgan – but the long-running series could be getting a major overhaul

There are fears of a “mutiny” at ITV over plans to revamp breakfast news show Good Morning Britain. The topical news show has been on the air since 2014 and features Susanna Reid, Richard Madeley and Kate Garraway as regular hosts.

However, things are tipped to change at the Television Centre in London, where the ITV show is filmed—and there will be a major “shake-up” over the way the show is filmed. It has been suggested that the overall aesthetic of the show could be changed to be more hard-hitting and in line with ITV’s news reports, which are produced by ITN.

It has been suggested that a new studio could be constructed to house the morning show, sparking alarm among staff that this could affect roles behind the scenes. Changes are said to be in consideration in the hope that the ITV show can overtake BBC Breakfast, which regularly pulls in over one million viewers each morning, compared to around 700,000 for GMB.

The suggestion of changes comes months after former ITV News boss Andrew Dagnell was appointed director of news and current affairs at ITV. While Unions reportedly expressed “concern” in a memo to staff.

The Daily Mail reported the rumours of changes with a source telling the outlet: “Obviously any talk of major change starts panic – lots of the staff were immediately worried about the security of their jobs.

“This is about streamlining ITV’s news output across the whole day, and having separate teams doubling up just doesn’t make sense. So it may well be that some correspondents end up appearing across the whole day’s schedule, rather than being specifically attached to GMB or ITV News.

“There could be a new set and a new feel, and a more continuous feel to ITV’s news bulletins throughout the whole day as a result. But people are very much likely to lose their jobs, so there is a lot of upset, anger and in some cases, mutiny.”

The Mirror has contacted ITV for comment.

One of Good Morning Britain’s biggest stars was Piers Morgan who served as an anchor on the show from 2015 until 2021 and was known for his outspoken opinions. His inclusion on the show helped GMB reach some of its biggest ratings in it’s 11 years history.

However, he sensationally walked away from the show four years ago after hitting out at the Duke and Duchess of Sussex after they gave an interview with Oprah Winfrey. Piers sparked a backlash when he criticised Meghan Markle after she opened up about past mental health struggles during her interview.

Quitting the show, he later wrote on X: “On Monday, I said I didn’t believe Meghan Markle in her Oprah interview. I’ve had time to reflect on this opinion, and I still don’t. Freedom of speech is a hill I’m happy to die on.”

Piers has struggled to find steady work since leaving the ITV show, however, as he joined News UK’s TalkTV channel – only for the network to be wound down. He now broadcasts a show on YouTube.

Piers has enjoyed viral success, however – particularly with an interview with Scottish lawyer Fiona Harvey, who is suing Netflix as she claims she was defamed by their hit show Baby Reindeer.
