Five reasons Erik ten Hag was sacked by Bayer Leverkusen revealed in disastrous appointment that cost £86k per day

ERIK TEN HAG was sacked by Bayer Leverkusen after just two matches due to FIVE major problems.

The former Manchester United was dumped by his new German side after failing to win either of his opening Bundesliga games.

Ten Hag’s exit came as a shock, with some fans feeling the Dutchman was unfairly treated while following in Xabi Alonso’s footsteps.

Leverkusen bid farewell to numerous title-winning stars including Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Piero Hincapie, with all three now in the Premier League.

And Ten Hag was left to work with a new group of aces whose quality was arguably not as high.

However, Leverkusen bosses were eager to pull the plug after long-standing employees branded him the WORST coach in their club’s history.

BIZARRE APPROACH

Bild now claims there were five key reasons to sack Ten Hag as quickly as possible – with the Dutchman leaving with a DAILY earning of £86,000 thanks to his £5.2million salary and severance package.

First off, it’s claimed that Ten Hag failed to get along with any of his players OR staff – including the ones who arrived with him in July.

He refused to give a “rousing” speech before the first match against Hoffenheim, with the game ending in a 2-1 defeat.

And many of his staff and players were left questioning his bizarre decision to almost downplay the occasion.

TRANSFER MADNESS

Secondly, the Dutchman was accused of “interfering” with Leverkusen’s transfer plans, including only proposing players from his own agency.

Ten Hag is represented by SEG Football, who represent Rasmus Hojlund and also allegedly batted for Andre Onana and Antony when they joined Man United for huge fees.

Meanwhile, he publicly vetoed Granit Xhaka’s move to Sunderland, despite an internal agreement for the Swiss ace to move on.

And Leverkusen chiefs went directly against Ten Hag when they granted Xhaka his exit just days later.

Elsewhere, the late arrival of Lucas Vazquez from Real Madrid was made without Ten Hag knowing until AFTER the ace’s contract was signed – highlighting his lack of relationship with club transfer guru Simon Rolfes and ultimately indicating Leverkusen’s decision to move forward without him.

TRAINING PAIN

The third reason for Ten Hag’s exit was his insistence on players doing PUSH UPS during training, ranking it as important as working with the ball.

Stars were used to lots of tactical and technical work under predecessor Alonso, now at Real Madrid.

And Ten Hag’s “unusually long” training sessions, packed with dull physical work, left many unmotivated.

NO CONNECTION

Fourthly, chiefs were left concerned by the “cold” atmosphere around the club, with Ten Hag’s lack of leadership resulting in a major disconnect at the training ground AND the stadium.

Staff ranging from coaches to nutritionists and physios quickly became disillusioned.

And the recent memories of Alonso’s title-winning reign only further compounded the misery.

TACTICAL DISASTERCLASS

Finally, the proof was in the pudding itself.

Leverkusen lost their first match to Hoffenheim, and then threw away a two-goal lead to draw with 10-men Werder Bremen.

Players were said to be baffled by the lack of ideas and general game plan – and it showed.

Individuals were expected to take decisive actions, but none seemed to work in a consistent tactical manner across the field.

And the only thing Leverkusen chiefs have been left to ponder is whether they should have sacked Ten Hag earlier.

Reports claim former Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is now being considered as his replacement.

While there is also interest in former Bundesliga managers Marco Rose and Edin Terzic, with a decision set to be made over the international break.

Estevao netted his first goal in Chelsea colours before Joao Pedro wrapped up the result late on.

Enzo Maresca‘s player did lift the trophy in a ceremony after the game but were not overly enthused in their celebrations.

The players took turns lifting the pre-season trophy until Malo Gusto handed it to Chalobah.

The defender gave the cup a half-hearted lift before Jorgenson decided to prank him.

The goalkeeper gestured that he wanted his go with the silverware and Chalobah went to give it to him.

However, the Dane was not being serious and instead walked away, leaving Chalobah hanging.

The defender was then left with the trophy and was unable to offload it to the likes of Liam Delap and Cole Palmer.

He eventually got shot of the cup as wonderkid Estavao took it off his hands and lifted it to the crowd with a big smile on his face.

Palmer was next to him when he lifted the cup and enjoyed watching the young brazilian enjoy the moment.

Meanwhile, after the match manager Maresca hinted that the Blues are not finished in the transfer market.

The Blues have been heavily tipped to sign Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho.

The club could also dip into the market for a new centre back following the ACL injury to Levi Colwill.

Maresca said: “It’s a priority for me to get a new centre back.

“We will see if we go for it.

“Levi is a fantastic player. What we achieved last season is because of him.

“He played a lot of games with me, I love him. We are going to miss him.

“We are trying also to find different solutions.”

The club could also see Nicolas Jackson leave before the window shuts.

The striker is training alone and was left out of the squad for the match against Leverkusen.

He has been linked with moves to both Newcastle and Bayern Munich.

Chelsea 2 Bayer Leverkusen 0: Joao Pedro and Estevao bring Brazilian brilliance to Stamford Bridge

CHELSEA hardly needed to play like world-beaters to see off lacklustre Leverkusen.

But there was plenty for the Blues to feel positive about from their first game as world champions.

Estevao’s goal and all-round first-half performance on his debut was the undoubted highlight, before Club World Cup hero Joao Pedro made it two late on.

And although boss Enzo Maresca regularly showed frustration with his team, this was a decent showing from a group of players with less than a week of training under their belt.

Maresca gave 10 outfield substitutes a run out without losing control of a game that at times had a bit more needle than he would have liked.

The way Cole Palmer linked up with Estevao will have pleased the Chelsea head coach.

The challenge which former Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah put in on Palmer will have had him wincing.

Especially after losing defender Levi Colwill to ACL surgery after a knock picked up in the very first training session since the CWC victory.

Palmer was incensed, and his team-mates backed him up in a brief outbreak of handbags.

Yet it was Chelsea who looked the fresher team.

Former Bundesliga champions Leverkusen had been working together for a full pre-season under new boss Erik ten Hag.

But they felt like one of Ten Hag’s old Manchester United teams: flat and toothless up front, having lost playmaker Florian Wirtz and wing-back Jeremie Frimpong to Liverpool.

Blues goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen made only a couple of routine saves and the visitors were unable to capitalise on the odd defensive error.

Otherwise it was all Chelsea.

Marc Cucurella and Estevao had shots blocked before the Brazilian started and finished the key move of the match.

After retrieving the ball near the halfway line, the right winger Cucurella, whose pass inside fell for Palmer.

The No 10s lob came back off the bar but Estevao volleyed it home.

Chelsea’s new No 9, Liam Delap, had two decent sights of goal but was denied each time by former Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken.

Delap might have done better, particularly with the first opportunity from Cucurella’s cross.

Estevao saw a shot blocked by Piero Hincapie’s head just before the break.

Palmer went off at half time, presumably as a precaution rather than because of any lasting damage from Quansah’s foul.

Estevao took his place in the No 10 position, leaving Pedro Neto to “follow that” on the right wing.

The young Brazilian had been less impressive in the second half yet had a chance to make the night even more special.

But he pulled a good chance wide before being replaced with 15 minutes to go to a loud ovation from the crowd.

Neto forced a decent save from Flekken and Chelsea were on the verge of settling for a scoreline that did not reflect their superiority.

But Joao Pedro put some extra shine on a night lit up by his fellow Brazilian Estevao with a last-gasp second.

Florian Wirtz’s new Liverpool salary revealed as £116.5million star slots in behind Mo Salah and Virgil Van Dijk

FLORIAN WIRTZ will reportedly pocket a mammoth salary at Liverpool.

The Reds agreed a record Premier League fee for the Bayer Leverkusen and Germany midfielder earlier this week.

The Merseysiders will pay the 2023/24 Bundesliga champions a whopping £116.5MILION for the 22-year-old.

Liverpool have fended off the likes of Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Real Madrid to land Wirtz, who has reportedly been handed a mammoth five-year contract.

And according to Sky Sports, the German will pocket a whopping £245,000 a week during his Anfield stay.

That works out to a whopping £12.7m a year, a fee which is nearly TWELVE TIMES what he currently earns at the BayArena.

A whooping £10.2m of that figure is guaranteed for the attacking midfielder, who will pocket the remaining £2.5m if individual and team performance targets are met.

Wirtz’s salary will make him the THIRD HIGHEST-PAID player at Anfield ahead of Andy Robertson, Alexis Mac-Allister, Allisson, Ryan Gravenberch, Federico Chiesa, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez.

Only Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, who both inked new one-year deals with the Prem champions last season, will earn more than him.

Egyptian Wizard Salah currently takes home a staggering £400,000 a week, which works out to be a jaw-dropping £20,800,000.

The Dutch defender became the Reds’ first signing of the summer late last month.

After the completion of his £29.5m move, the 24-year-old said: “Liverpool fans, I’m going to give my all.

“My energy, my work-rate. And hopefully, we can win together, we celebrate together, get everything together.

“I’m just excited to be here. Thank you guys for accepting me.

“And I won’t let you guys down and I’ll give you the energy that you guys want.”

Jeremie Frimpong lands in UK on private jet with Bayer Leverkusen star to complete £30m Liverpool transfer

JEREMIE FRIMPONG touched down in the UK on a private jet today to complete his £29.5million move to Liverpool.

The Bayer Leverkusen right-back, 24, had a medical last week after the Premier League champions met the Dutchman’s release clause.

Now Frimpong is ready to finalise his transfer and become Arne Slot’s first summer signing.

His imminent arrival coincides with the departure of long-serving full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is set to join Real Madrid.

He is set to be in competition with homegrown talent Conor Bradley, 21, for the right-back spot.

Frimpong will increase the Dutch influence at Anfield, alongside captain Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo.

Kop boss Slot, who took over from Jurgen Klopp and won the league title during his first season in charge, is also from the Netherlands.

Liverpool are also closing in on a second high-profile signing from Leverkusen — midfielder Florian Wirtz.

The German sensation’s parents met Anfield officials a fortnight ago.

And Slot’s men appear to be edging out Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich in the race for the £126million-rated midfielder.

Manchester City initially held an interest in Wirtz but withdrew from the transfer race last week.

City had considered signing him as a replacement for the outgoing Kevin De Bruyne.

However, the overall cost of a potential deal was deemed too high.

The Cityzens were said to be concerned that such a move would not represent good value for money.
