UK Christmas market that attracts nearly two million visitors is getting three new attractions

ONE of the UK’s most popular Christmas markets is getting some new additions for families this year.

Newcastle Christmas Market welcomed 1.7million tourists last year, and spreads across the city centre, including Old Eldon Square.

Throughout the streets, visitors can usually find a number of stalls with local traders selling food, drinks and gifts.

And for this year, the festive event will be getting three new attractions.

The first is Marshmallow Land – where visitors will be able to toast marshmallows over an open fire.

Then the second is a Festive Flix Area, where visitors can enjoy a cinema experience.

There will be multiple screenings across from November 28 to December 23 with films such as Elf, Home Alone and Love Actually.

And finally, there will be a new Ferris wheel at Old Eldon Square, from November 15 to December 31.

The market will also extend onto Nelson Street this year, creating even more space for stalls, with a focus on fresh and festive produce.

The Christmas Village on Old Eldon Square – which launched last year – will return, with a family area and a number of festive activities for kids.

This area will also be where visitors can find the Rockin’ Reindeer stage with shows and Santa Stories inside a tipi, with Santa himself.

Other attractions at the market returning for 2025 include the North Pole Terrace, where visitors can book igloos that surround Monument.

Alternatively, you could head to Moosenwirt – an alpine Christmas pop-up bar.

Families can even visit Mrs Claus’ Bakery to participate in a workshop.

In the surrounding area, there are even more Christmas events to explore including an ice rink at the Life Sciences Centre, from £15.50 per person.

Or head to Leazes Park to explore the Northern Lights light trail, from £15 per person.

Stephen Patterson, chief executive of NE1 Ltd said: “It has long been our aim to put Newcastle on the festive map, enhancing its offer and making it a must-visit destination for festive fun seekers from near and far.

“Festive markets and seasonal activities are more than just celebrations, they’re powerful tools to increase visitor numbers and footfall into the city centre, boosting business over the crucial Christmas period.”

HAVING visited the market last year, travel reporter Cyann Fielding shares her thoughts…

Newcastle Christmas market sprawls across the entire city centre and is actually formed of several markets – with each offering something different from the previous.

For example, based near Grey’s Monument, you will find a number of igloos to enjoy a drink in, whilst watching visitors peruse the stalls.

The stalls then sell a variety of things, including cheeses, alcohol, cakes, and crafted gifts.

In this area you will also find the Moosenwirt Bar, where prices aren’t too bad for a festive market.

You can grab a mulled wine or cider for £6.50, for example.

And when it comes to food, you won’t be short for choice.

I opted for the viral hit that I had seen plastered across my TikTok feed – a Yorkshire pudding wrap.

Whilst it set me back £14, it was well worth it – the portion was huge, and it was full of everything you’d expect to eat on Christmas Day, including the gravy and stuffing.

For kids, there is a lot to do as well, including a family area with some rides, such as a carousel and Christmas-themed shows.

UK village with charming bars and boutique shops attracts music’s biggest stars

The charming coastal Lancashire town of Lytham has plenty to enjoy for residents and visitors alike during a weekend away and is home to a major UK festival attracting hundreds of thousands each year

Lytham, a charming coastal town in Lancashire, is the place to be when music’s biggest names come to town. The town offers plenty to enjoy all year round, from its quaint bars and boutique shops to its highly praised restaurants, but it’s during the summer that Lytham truly shines.

Since its inception in 2010 as a one-day prom concert, Lytham Festival has grown into a five-day extravaganza attracting over 100,000 attendees each year. Founded by mates and business partners Daniel Cuffe and Peter Taylor, the festival has brought some of the world’s most renowned music legends to the coast.

Over the years, the festival has boasted a line up featuring global superstars such as Stevie Wonder, Kylie Minogue, Rod Stewart, Justin Timberlake, Lionel Richie, Diana Ross, Sting, Sinitta and Shania Twain, as well as major acts like Stereophonics, Faithless, Bryan Adams, Def Leppard, The Courteeners, and The Strokes.

The 2026 edition will kick off on Wednesday, July 1, with GRAMMY-nominated singer Teddy Swims taking the stage on opening night. He’ll be joined by Lauren Spencer Smith and Jordan Rakei for support.

The second act announced is the Pet Shop Boys, who will bring their euphoric pop sound to the stage with ‘DREAMWORLD – The Greatest Hits Live’, on Saturday, July 4, reports the Liverpool Echo.

The global superstar Pitbull will be bringing the festival to a grand close on Sunday, 5 July, with his ‘I’m Back! Tour’. He’ll be joined by rapper Lil Jon, his band The Agents, and dancers The Most Bad Ones, promising a spectacular finale to the event on the Lancashire coast.

While there are still more artists to be announced, Lytham’s appeal extends beyond its star-studded line-up. The town offers plenty to enjoy throughout the year, whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or just fancy a bite to eat.

Despite its small size – you can stroll from one end of the town centre to the other in just a few minutes – Lytham is packed full of charm. Its array of delightful businesses more than compensates for its compact size, demonstrating that quality always trumps quantity.

For those in search of gifts, cards or street food, the Clifton Walk Shopping Arcade provides a quaint back-alley experience. It’s been ages since I’ve seen an arcade so well-maintained and bustling with people, which only serves to underscore the town’s enduring charm.

Lytham is also home to two of the nation’s top fish and chip shops – Whelan’s and The Haven – as declared by The Times in its recent roundup of the best seaside spots for fish and chips. The town centre is awash with flowers, trees, and lush greenery, creating a laid-back atmosphere where everyone seems to be taking their time and soaking up the surroundings.

Lytham may not be the place for a wild night out, but it’s perfect for a relaxed drink.

If you’re in the mood for some grub, Lytham House brasserie is the place to go. With an AA-Rosette to its name, it’s the town’s top spot for a posh dinner.

Spread over two floors with a buzzing cocktail bar, the menu offers a modern take on British classics to suit all tastes.

Even a night-time stroll home is something special in Lytham. The Windmill Museum comes alive after dark, bathed in a soft pink light that can be seen from miles around.

There’s loads to do in Lytham, even if you’re just there for the day. From the stunning coastline and plethora of quaint bars, shops and eateries, to the annual festival that draws in thousands of visitors and big-name stars.

This peaceful seaside town is just a short drive from Liverpool and should definitely be on your must-visit list.

Cardi B’s Long Beach meet-and-greet attracts more than a thousand fans

It was a particularly busy Thursday morning for the Bixby Knolls neighborhood of Long Beach.

The area, which is home to an array of independently owned businesses and small restaurants, both of which boast unique facades from storefront to storefront, saw hundreds of eager fans start lining up outside its doors as early as 8 a.m.

Many crowded around one store in particular: Fingerprints Music, which only recently began to call Bixby Knolls its home — in April — after a roughly 15-year residency in downtown Long Beach. As crowd control barricades began springing up and artist security personnel lingered outside the famed vinyl record shop, passersby and neighbors alike began to ponder what could be going on.

It was simple: Cardi B.

The “Bodak Yellow” singer managed to squeeze in a meet-and-greet event at the store to commemorate last week’s release of her sophomore album, “Am I the Drama?” A link to tickets dropped on Fingerprints Music’s website on Sept. 9, which fans barely gave a chance to breathe.

“I follow her on Instagram — I have hard notifications on every platform — so, as soon as the video went up, I rushed to the website and bought it,” said Gerardo Torres of Gardena. “I was probably one of the first few [to buy tickets], less than five minutes after she announced it I already had mine.”

Torres stood near the front of the line, which he joined around 10:30 a.m. Next to him was Arlene Heaton of Rosamond, who had just driven three hours from the Kern County community to arrive at the same time. The two met in line and quickly became friends — she donning a rhinestone-studded ensemble and he draping a flag depicting Cardi B around his shoulders.

“If she would’ve been three hours away, I would have been there as well!” Torres added.

“It took about 10 minutes [to sell out],” Heaton said. “I love the album and I just had to get the CD… I wanted to support her and I came all the way from Rosamond to see this happen — history, this is history.”

Though the event was scheduled for a 2 p.m. start, it wasn’t until 2:30 that Cardi arrived on the scene. A few fans trickled out from behind the store, rejoicing that they’d seen her arrive.

Moments later, security formed a human barrier around the entrance, and Cardi stepped out of the store with a megaphone. Whatever she said was rendered unintelligible among the thunderous cheers of fans who surged forward, putting her entourage to the test.

“I do music myself, I’m not a fan of many, but her? Oh, my God, there was no way. I got up at like 8 in the morning; I set my alarm for 6:30,” said Curshawn Watts, who called herself the “Queen of Compton.” “I was out here! I didn’t care how early I had to be here — I had to be here!” Watts said.

She’d been waiting since 10 a.m. and said the heat didn’t bother her: “It’s worth it all, baby!” she declared.

As fans made their way into the store, they were greeted by the sound of tracks from Cardi’s new album playing on the store speakers. “Am I the Drama?” vinyl records and CDs filled out the shelves, and portraits of Cardi stood above them.

Nestled in the back corner behind a black curtain sat the woman herself, visibly pregnant, in brown snakeskin heels, denim shorts, and adorning various gold statement pieces. She had confirmed in a CBS interview last week that she and NFL star Stefon Diggs were expecting a child.

An estimated 1,200 fans arrived on the blistering day in Long Beach, though only 800 were able to secure a guest list spot to see the 32-year-old hip-hop artist. Others assembled nearby, hoping for a chance to merely lay eyes on her or, perhaps, to get lucky enough to join the meet-and-greet.

Indeed, Fingerprints Music and Cardi B accommodated around 200 to 300 more people toward the tail end of the event from among those who didn’t make the list. The event lasted until well after 5 p.m.

By that time, the somewhat chaotic nature of the meet-and-greet’s afternoon heights had settled down. Street vendors no longer camped outside, artists wrapped up their pieces for sale, and the weather began to cool.

“We don’t usually do that, but everyone seemed pretty chill,” said Rand Foster, owner of Fingerprints Music. “For somebody at that caliber to be that open was really refreshing.”

Cardi B even stayed overtime to do a surprise signing of an exclusive alternate cover of her album. Four photos from a courtroom appearance she made in August embellish that variant.

Foster said he considered Thursday’s event, the largest the store has held since moving to its new location, to be a resounding success. He noted that when the store was downtown, the store once hosted an Ozzy Osbourne meet-and-greet that had a roughly 2,300-person turnout.

At its location in Bixby Knolls, the store is still feeling out its neighborhood. Foster said not only did the event bring extra traffic to other businesses, but he “didn’t hear any neighbors put out by it.”

Cardi B could have easily opted for a location more central to Los Angeles, such as Amoeba Music, so many fans were surprised and happy to see Long Beach get some love.

One man, who called himself Mr. Boug’e and sported a uniquely curled beard, said it came down to Long Beach being “dope.”

“I call it Strong Beach,” he joked. “She got love everywhere — it don’t matter. It can be in an alley… or Alaska; they gon’ love her.”

Foster, whose shop has a long-standing relationship with its Hollywood peers at Amoeba, said the decision by Cardi B’s team to hold her meet-and-greet in Long Beach probably also came down to logistics.

“Anybody who is doing this kind of event and doing it with an eye towards longevity has to be respectful to the neighbors,” he explained. “Our line got about six blocks long; I think that would be tough on Hollywood Boulevard.”
