Alejandro Garnacho

Man Utd files: How Garnacho and Amorim’s relationship unravelled with Harry Maguire among stars to stage intervention

ALEJANDRO GARNACHO returns to Old Trafford on Saturday just 21 days after he said his goodbyes.

But he might find that goodwill is in short supply as it was not just Ruben Amorim who tried in vain to get him to see the light at Old Trafford.

Several senior players – including Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro and Harry Maguire – urged him to start thinking of the team instead of just himself.

But he wouldn’t listen and in the end the manager felt the Argentine youngster was bringing a negative vibe to the dressing room.

And his regular outbursts on social media – as well as the mainstream media – also riled the former Sporting Lisbon coach.

Amorim was looking forward to working with the winger when he took over in November but that all changed after his conduct in Plzen in December.

The coach also tired of Garnacho’s moodiness and temper tantrums when things were not going his way.

So in the end a parting of the ways became inevitable and sources close to Amorim say he has not regretted his stance once.

Could that change if the Carrington graduate inspires a Chelsea win at the Theatre of Dreams this weekend though?

Battle to keep ‘Kid Messi’

UNITED starlet JJ Gabriel continues to catch the eye with his performances both within the club’s academy and further afield.

A host of German clubs are understood to have made their interest in him clear should he and his family wish to follow in the footsteps of Jude Bellingham and Jadon Sancho by leaving England to further his career in the Bundesliga

The 14-year-old, who recently enjoyed a holiday in Barcelona, is contracted with United until the end of next season, and has produced a string of impressive performances after being promoted to the U18s.

A source said: “The success of the likes of Bellingham and Sancho in Germany is a big selling point for German clubs trying to poach some of the Premier League’s best young talents.

JJ Gabriel of Manchester United celebrates after scoring a goal.

“They can offer them first team football at an earlier age than a lot of clubs in the UK.”

United remain convinced they gave JJ and his family compelling reasons why Carrington remains the best place for him to continue his development.

The teenager has met with manager Amorim and could well spend time training with the first team squad this season.

His development is being closely monitored by United U18s boss Darren Fletcher

Under the knife

SPEAKING of Fletcher, his success as U18s academy boss has been noted with four wins out of four so far this season.

It’s all the more impressive given the former midfielder injured himself during a United v Celtic legends game earlier this month raised money for both clubs’ foundations.

Fletcher opened the scoring in the game which ended 2-2 before Celtic clinched victory on penalties.

Fletcher, 41, underwent an operation on his knee this week as a result, but refused to take time off and has been on the sidelines for each game.

A source said: “He’s Scottish. He’s made of tough stuff.”

Denis Irwin’s sweet return

UNITED fans are invited to engage with three organisations doing big work to improve men’s mental health at Old Trafford this Saturday.

Representatives from ‘Andy’s Man Club’ will be stationed within the Pop-Up Pub by the Stretford End, inviting supporters to learn more about the suicide prevention charity

The group offers free peer-to-peer support groups across the UK and online, as part of their mission to end the stigma surrounding men’s mental health through the power of conversation.

Fans with tickets to the game can enjoy live music, fast pours, local food and a Q&A with club legends Denis Irwin and Gary Pallister.

Salford-based charityTalk About It Mate’ will also have a space in the East Stand forecourt from 2pm before kick-off.

Chido Obi potential

CHIDO Obi enjoyed a meteoric rise last season, signing for United from Arsenal and quickly making his first team debut under Amorim.

The 17-year-old went on to make seven first team appearances but has found himself back down the pecking order after United splashed out £74m on Slovenian target man Benjamin Sesko

And while Danish international Chido hasn’t been on the bench for any first team games this season, his development – in both size and skill – are continuing at the academy.

A source said: “Chido is still sometimes involved in first team training now but the noticeable development for him is his size.

“He is a tall boy but has started to put on some significant muscle on his frame, which he needs.”

Chido is working under the guidance of United’s sharpest academy coaches who regularly provide updates to Amorim.

United’s U21 boss Travis Binnion said earlier this season: “We have not even scraped the top of the iceberg with him yet. There is loads to come.

“He is dying to be a footballer. He is hungry. He is learning the game. He is learning how to project himself and how to play in a team.

“For us, he is a priority. He is 17. He needs to understand this is a golden period to develop his game.”

Amazing Premier League XI worth £360MILLION in line for debuts this weekend including Isak, Garnacho and Sancho

CLUB football is back for the Premier League this weekend after the international break.

After the last round of fixtures, a chaotic transfer deadline day followed as clubs splashed out £375million on new talent to take the overall spending for the window to over £3BILLION.

And with that wave of new arrivals, including emergency loans, the conclusions of blockbuster sagas and shrewd deals, there will be several new faces for fans to watch.

SunSport has taken a look at stars who could make their debuts this weekend, including two club-record signings.

Kicking off the team in goal is new Manchester City star Gianluigi Donnarumma, who arrived on deadline day from Paris Saint-Germain for £26million.

New £18m Manchester United star Senne Lammens could have been selected just as easily, but they can let their goalkeeping do the talking during the Manchester Derby on Sunday.

Arsenal’s Piero Hincapie – signed on loan from Bayer Leverkusen with a £45m option to buy – put in a great display for Ecuador against Argentina and will partner £13m Bournemouth signing Veljko Milosavljevic and West Ham loanee Igor Julio in defence.

There are three more loanees to consider going forward: Tottenham’s Randal Kolo Muani, Nottingham Forest‘s Oleksandr Zinchenko and Aston Villa‘s Jadon Sancho, who all arrived in the twilight hours of the summer window.

Harvey Elliott followed Sancho to the struggling Villans from Liverpool on an initial loan with a £35m obligation to buy next summer.

The front three is where the majority of the star power and cost come into play.

BEST ONLINE CASINOS – TOP SITES IN THE UK

Alejandro Garnacho, a £40m sale from Man Utd to Chelsea, was not a deadline day switch but was only announced after the Blues’ most recent game at Stamford Bridge – meaning he will be in line for his debut this weekend.

Newcastle star Nick Woltemade is the club’s record signing at £69m.

Liverpool sign Isak for £130m

The 23-year-old German looked impressive during the Under-21 Euros this summer, while he scored 17 for Stuttgart last season.

But he – alongside fellow new Toon ace Yoane Wissa – will have big boots to fill following Alexander Isak‘s record-breaking £130m departure to Liverpool.

Isak’s saga dragged on all summer and was on and off and then on and off again, before possibly the move of the summer was finally put to bed on deadline day.

Elsewhere, there are the likes of Kevin, Fulham‘s own £35m record-breaking arrival from Shakhtar Donetsk, Jaydee Canvot at Crystal Palace and Brian Brobbey at Sunderland who could also make first appearances for their new clubs at the weekend.

Amorim believes Onana exit has cleared Man Utd of negative influences with keeper refusing to acknowledge manager

RUBEN AMORIM sees the departure of Andre Onana as key to his rebuild at Manchester United.

Cameroon keeper Onana is joining Turkish outfit Trabzonspor on a season-long loan.

SunSport believes Onana’s relationship with United boss Amorim broke down irretrievably over the past month.

A source claimed: “It felt like Andre was there to just show up but wasn’t there or showing any team mentality.”

Amorim was unhappy that Onana, 29, picked up a hamstring injury at the start of pre-season training.

All the more so as he had been filmed playing on a mud patch in his homeland in June.

Onana is one of a number of stars that Amorim has let go this summer.

He has already sent  Marcus Rashford, Jadon SanchoAlejandro Garnacho and Antony packing.

And left-back Tyrell Malacia looks set to join Turkish side Eyupspor on a temporary deal.

United’s boss feels he has cleared the way for a more positive future and can kick on with preparations for Sunday’s Manchester derby.

Onana was left out of the starting XI for the opening Premier League games against Arsenal and  Fulham.

He then put in another error-strewn display in the humiliating Carabao Cup defeat at Grimsby.

Former Man Utd manager forced to ride E-Bike across pitch to get to tunnel during World Cup qualifier

It saw him dropped again for the Prem win over Burnley before United made a deadline-day £18.2million swoop for 23-year-old Belgian Senne Lammens.

And it has emerged that insiders felt Onana was showing a lack of involvement and interest in working for the team in the final days before the international break.

That included the former Ajax and Inter Milan keeper effectively refusing to even acknowledge his manager in training.

So Amorim was happy to wave through Onana’s exit, leaving him with Lammens, struggling Turk Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton, 39.

Amorim has to decide whether to give Lammens a debut at the Etihad or stick with Bayindir for now.

Meanwhile, Onana copped more flak for the 1-0 defeat by Cape Verde on Tuesday that virtually ended Cameroon’s hopes of automatic World Cup qualification.

The keeper was at fault for Dailon Livramento’s winner, staying rooted to his line as the forward ran through on goal.

The Indomitable Lions are four points behind Cape Verde with two group games left.

Enzo Maresca finally landing Alejandro Garnacho – but is £40m Man Utd outcast any better than what Blues already have?

CHELSEA boss Enzo Maresca wanted another left winger, and the club have given him Alejandro Garnacho.

But is the Argentinian, with his inconsistency on the field and indiscipline off it, the right option?

Garnacho, whose signing is set to be confirmed today after he watched the Blues take on Fulham, undoubtedly has bags of potential.

Aged 21, he has plenty of time to fulfil it.

At a fee of £40m, in a window where players have been going for really silly money, he does not represent a massive risk.

The question is whether Garnacho is better than what Chelsea already have or what they have let go in the course of an incredible summer of buying and selling.

Garnacho is set to duke it out with fellow new arrival Jamie Gittens to be Maresca’s first choice down the left.

The Blues boss said: “They are quite similar.

“When we are looking for a winger, we like wingers who are good in one-v-one, they are quite vertical, aggressive, they can attack, they can create something.

“Jamie is that profile. If Garnacho arrives, we will see.”

Garnacho brings more competition for places in Chelsea’s well-stocked attack.

But when you compare his stats for last season to those of Gittens, it is not much of a contest.

Chelsea fans needn’t worry about losing Rio Ngumoha, there’s somone better on the way

Across most of the important categories, Gittens was better: goals, assists, dribbles, chance conversion and so on.

There are two points to consider, however. Firstly, Gittens had a great time in front of goal last season, outperforming his expected goals significantly.

Meanwhile Garnacho had a particularly bad time when it came to converting big chances.

Secondly, there is the Jadon Sancho factor.

While Sancho was playing for Borussia Dortmund – as Gittens was last season – the then England manager Gareth Southgate was asked frequently about his form and whether he deserved more game time.

Without ever actually saying, “Lads, it’s the Bundesliga”, Southgate made it pretty clear that doing well in Germany’s top flight was one thing, but reproducing that form in the Premier League and at international level was quite another.

Maresca was not impressed with Gittens’ PL debut against Crystal Palace, hooking him after 54 minutes and putting him on the bench for the 5-1 thrashing of West Ham.

Yet it would be harsh to judge Gittens so soon.

Interestingly, too, Sancho’s stats while he was on loan at Chelsea last season stand up pretty well to Garnacho’s for United in some categories.

Jadon Sancho of Chelsea celebrating.

7

Jadon Sancho also put up better numbers that Garnacho during his Chelsea loan last seasonCredit: Reuters

Sancho seemed to enjoy being away from the toxicity of Old Trafford and Maresca said: “We had Jadon with us and he had a very good season.

“Again, if we finish top four and we achieve what we achieved, it’s also because of Jadon.

“Now with Garnacho, in case [if] he will arrive, we will see.”

That phrase again – we will see.

Noni Madueke, sold to Arsenal by the Blues earlier this summer, outperformed both Sancho and Garnacho last season.

Madueke, of course, plays primarily as a right winger. But on output alone, Chelsea seem to have got rid of a more potent attacking player than Garnacho.

And looking at Pedro Neto’s numbers, you wonder whether the Blues would have been better keeping Madueke.

Garnacho’s statistics for United in 2023/4 were in many cases better than in 2024/5, but not to a spectacular degree.

The Argentinian has it all to prove on the pitch.

He will also need to be careful off it.

Graphic comparing Garnacho's stats to those of rival wingers.

Garnacho infuriated United this summer with his habit of sending not-very-subtle messages of defiance through social media.

The Blues boss said: “We are in an era where I look like the strange one, because I don’t use social networks.

“I have a company that runs my Instagram but I don’t use it. I look strange because I don’t use it.

“But the normal situation in this era is that everyone uses it. I’m not going to tell them, don’t use that.

“First of all, because they have family around them that can give them advice.

“I have four kids and try to give them advice.

“But if I have to give 25 more players advice, it’s too complicated.

“Anyone can do what they want, anyone can say what they want, but in the end it’s a matter of respect.”

Garnacho may find Maresca and Chelsea intolerant of mischief-making on social media and other disruptive behaviour.

And he only has to look at the turnover of players at Stamford Bridge to know what will happen if he does not deliver.

Ten mega-money transfers that could happen THIS WEEK before Premier League season including Isak, Baleba and Eze

THERE are just four days to go until the new Premier League season kicks off.

Champions Liverpool wasted no time in dropping nearly £300million to bolster Arne Slot’s squad ahead of their title defence.

But as managers across the division make their final preparations ahead of this weekend, chairmen will be trying to get some more players in through the doors in time for the curtain-raisers.

SunSport rounds up ten mega-money transfers that could get done THIS WEEK

ALEXANDER ISAK

The Newcastle striker’s future has been one of sagas of the summer – will he stay or will he go?

Liverpool had a £110m offer rejected as the Toon want £150m but how helpful could a sulking, unhappy Isak be for Eddie Howe?

SAVINHO

The Brazilian winger only joined Manchester City a year ago – seen as very much the replacement for Riyad Mahrez.

But Tottenham have entered talks over the wide man – although City would not entertain offers under £50m.

MARC GUEHI

The Crystal Palace captain led his side to a second Wembley trophy in three months on Sunday – but could line up for opponents Liverpool this season.

Steve Parish admitted the Eagles will sell if the right bid comes in as Guehi enters the final year of his deal. Newcastle have also been interested.

YOANE WISSA

The mass exodus at Brentford this summer may not be over just yet if Wissa follows Thomas Frank, Bryan Mbeumo, Christian Norgaard and Mark Flekken out of the Gtech.

Newcastle reportedly had a £25m bid turned down but look set to go back in for the DR Congo international, with Liverpool monitoring the situation.

KEVIN

Another Brazilian winger, this time it is Kevin who could be on the move – and heading to the Premier League.

Fulham submitted an offer of £32m but Shakhtar Donetsk are trying to hold out for £43m.

CARLOS BELEBA

Manchester United want to bring in another midfielder before the window closes – and would love Baleba in time for the start of the new season.

The Cameroon star is only 21 but Brighton will not let him go on the cheap, so much so that the Red Devils may well need to pay a record-breaking £115m-plus for the holding midfielder.

XAVI SIMONS

Chelsea are after a young, exciting attacker – again. This time it is Xavi Simons being lined up.

RB Leipzig will want at least £60m but the Blues may try and strike a deal which sees Christopher Nkunku return to his former club – plus Tyrique George.

TRANSFER NEWS LIVE – KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST FROM A BUSY SUMMER WINDOW

ALEJANDRO GARNACHO

Copy and paste from above – but this time it is Alejandro Garnacho who could be on his way to Stamford Bridge with talks underway.

He is part of the ‘bomb squad’ deemed surplus to requirements by United gaffer Ruben Amorim, who will happily see the back of the Argentine wideman who was left out of the USA pre-season tour.

NICOLAS JACKSON

But with all the incomings at Chelsea – including strikers Joao Pedro and Liam Delap – there may be a major exit, too, with Jackson third-choice No9.

Jackson would prefer a switch to Newcastle, but the Toon will only bid for him should Isak leave – and they are determined not to let that happen.

EBERECHI EZE

Just like his skipper Guehi, Eze continues to be linked with an exit away from Selhurst Park.

With the Ademola Lookman deal seemingly off the cards, Arsenal may swoop for the Palace talisman in a package worth £55m to £60m – although Tottenham may attempt to hijack the transfer if they can’t get Savinho.

Garnacho was left fuming after being benched for the Europa League final last month.

He later angered his teammates after giving an interview where he described United’s season as “s**t”.

The 20-year-old cut a dejected figure on the Red Devils’ disastrous post-season tour of Asia.

Garnacho was spotted in an altercation with a fan, before flashing the middle finger to supporters after a loss to the ASEAN All Stars.

The former Puskas Award winner has jetted out to Rome with girlfriend Eva Garcia for some much-needed R&R.

Garcia posted a host of snaps of the pair enjoying the Italian capital with their young son Enzo.

The influencer – who has her own jewellery line – uploaded the memories to her 664,000 Instagram followers.

Garnacho is also attracting attention from Napoli, but would prefer to stay in the Premier League.

United rejected a £40m January bid from the Naples club for Garnacho but may get twice that from the Saudis.

Pro League club Al-Nassr are preparing an audacious bid with Cristiano Ronaldo’s future at the club uncertain.

Garnacho’s relationship with Amorim fell apart after a dressing room spat boiled over infront of teammates.

Amorim reportedly told Garnacho he needs to “pray he can find a new club.”

United have since signed Matheus Cunha and are eyeing up Swede goal machine Viktor Gyokeres.

Garnacho appeared in 36 Premier League games last season, contributing 6 goals and 3 assists.

Following Europa League heartbreak against Tottenham, the Argentine refused to be drawn on his future at United.

Garnacho said: “Until we reached the final, I played every round.

“And I played 20 minutes today – I don’t know. “I’m going to try to enjoy the summer and see what happens next.”

Inside Man Utd’s ‘stag do’ Far East tour including clashes with fans, player protests and humiliating open-top bus trip

MANCHESTER UNITED endured a nightmare post-season tour in Asia including an embarrassing on-pitch display, a humiliating bus parade and unhappy players.

Following the club’s horror season, the decision to play two matches in the Far East to generate some extra cash was not a decision popular in the club.

9

The club’s commercial activities saw them participating in a humiliating bus parade

In fact, according to the Manchester Evening News, when the squad learned of that decision a delegation was sent to the club’s football leadership on behalf of the first team to express their dismay.

Some of the squad were said to be outright “fuming” about having to go on the six-day tour after a 60-game season, though with commercial duties taking up much of the agenda the trip effectively became a four-day event.

Players were said to be concerned about having to cancel holiday plans, including one who complained about being forced to cancel a family trip scheduled for the half-term week.

Club chiefs made a concession by bringing the departure time of their Malaysia flight forwards to Sunday evening, hour following the final game of the season against Aston Villa, after learning some players might try to “cry off” the 14,150-mile round trip to Malaysia.

However, the actual mood in the camp on tour was said to be a better than anticipated despite the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham.

Some commercial player events including fan meet-and-greets are said to have taken up to two hours to complete as the local supporters lapped up the chance to see Man Utd in the flesh, including on the humiliating open-top bus parade which happened in Kuala Lumpur before the first friendly against ASEAN All-Stars.

Kit makers Adidas hosted a nocturnal poolside party at the W Hotel – where they stayed as part of their link with club sponsor, Marriott – following the 1-0 defeat to the All-Stars.

Several guests are said to have attended the meeting, with many “admiring” the view of the Petronas Twin Towers in the background.

That came after players were said to have been using gallows humour on the team bus back to the hotel, which had followed some booing from fans there.

The rules on tour were more relaxed than a pre-season tour would be and players were given permission to head out on their first night in the city, with one star allegedly half-joking the trip would be “like a stag do”.

Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho show middle finger to fans during Man Utd’s post-season tour in Malaysia

However, while some were tempted to go out into the city to enjoy the night, a senior star instead advised them to stay in.

Amad Diallo, Alejandro Garnacho and Ayden Heaven were seen out on e-scooters, which had to be paid for by fans, while Joshua Zirkzee opted to enjoy some Thai take-out with a security guard after not being impressed by the room service options.

Club staff were also able to let their hair down in the trip, with some enjoying drinks on the 14-hour flight to the Malaysian capital.

On the eighth floor of the hotel itself there was a vending machine which dispensed £40 mini bottles of Moet & Chandon champagne.

The second leg of the tour saw them go to Hong Kong, but they were barely in the country 36 hours following an early-morning flight which then saw them spend an hour in their second W Hotel for lunch before getting on the team bus for training.

Despite the glitz and glam of the 5-star establishment, things were sour away from the hotel with Amad and Garnacho seen gesturing their middle fingers towards fans and the latter doing so towards a club camerman.

Amad later revealed he had been subjected to insults about his mother from some fans.

Meanwhile, Garnacho – on the tour after being told to “pray” he finds a new club following a public dressing down in front of team-mates by Ruben Amorim – did the gesture without any clear provocation.

The 20-year-old was involved in a fan altercation while out in the city as the fan seemed to invade his personal space and also looked very unbothered during a shirt signing event.

He was described as “surly” during the trip, with club staff shadowing him closely as he signed shirts and posed for pictures without ever breaking into a smile.

The Argentine was one of the last to board to team bus after the All Stars defeat and donned sunglasses as he ignored requests in the mixed zone.

One eyewitness claimed he removed his shades after getting through the packed pen, while Amorim later chuckled in a press conference when a reporter asked if there was any chance of Garnacho staying at the club.

Amorim, 40, is said to have told a colleague about how exhausting the post-season tour had been, especially in the humidity of Malaysia.

Man Utd finished their tour by beating Hong Kong 3-1 off a brace from Chido Obi and a late header from Ayden Heaven.

The club lifted the Defining Education Challenge Cup as a result of the win, but the trophy was so undervalued that a press officer carried it back to the dressing room.

In the first game back in Kuala Lumpur, Man Utd stars had been delayed in collecting their silver medals when the referee and linesman had returned to the dressing room before being called back out.

All in all the tour was estimated to generate around £10million for the club – which should at least leave the club’s financial department a little happier- although you would imagine a post-season tour next year may not be on the cards.

After the break a pre-season tour in Chicago is next, which is when the real work begins.
