Fans of Coronation Street can expect a soap first in upcoming scenes, and a major shake-up to the soap’s episode style.

In the coming weeks there’s a big episode for Todd Grimshaw and Theo Silverton as the soap’s domestic abuse storyline escalates. The police are involved when there’s a domestic incident, with the episode shown through the point of view of cameras such as Todd’s hidden camera, CCTV and police body cams as a series of flashbacks show what happened, in a soap first.

Viewers have seen Theo repeatedly manipulate and control Todd, gaslighting him and making him think he is to blame for his scary outbursts. Things have now turned physical, with Theo being violent.

We’ve also seen Theo cruelly torment Todd by suggesting he needs to lose weight, monitoring his exercise and his eating. Now a special episode will detail things escalating further, leading to an incident.

The episode sees behind closed doors as Theo’s abuse intensifies in an episode, solely focused on this plot. The police soon come knocking, and something has happened at the flat.

Everything we see onscreen will be through cameras as detailed above, showing what happened in the flat in a series of flashbacks. But will Theo’s horrendous abuse finally be exposed?

Spoilers for the rest of the week see Todd cleaning up the mess as he tries to piece together the events of the night before. Bernie Winter has seen the state of the flat, and suggests there’s more to what happened than has been let on.

Both Todd and Theo are in the episodes following, acting as though nothing has happened. It leaves George Shuttleworth unnerved, and soon he and Christina Boyd are invited over for lunch.

George offers Todd his job back, but will he accept? George soon quizzes Todd and Theo about their row and reveals that Bernie saw the state of the flat.

But what did happen, and will the truth come out? In October, Corrie boss Kate Brooks told The Mirror about the special episode as the storyline takes another dark turn. Kate revealed: “We’ve still got quite a bit of a journey to go on with these two. There’s some quite dark episodes, but very important episodes and very raw episodes, very authentic episodes.

“We have played about with the format a little bit to tell these stories. I’ve just been in a viewing this morning and it’s a really, really brilliant episode, a really powerful episode, focused primarily on their relationship. And I don’t think it’s ever been done before. In fact, it hasn’t been done before.

“I don’t think anyone’s ever told a story in this format in this way and the impact it has… I’ve just watched it, and been quite stunned by it. I’ve got to go back and re-watch it again, just to digest what I’ve just watched on screen, because it really is powerful. It’s really emotive.

“You still see Todd’s personality desperately trying to break through at times. It’s a hard watch. You know, we’re not rooting for Todd and Theo in any way, shape or form. This story will naturally progress and hopefully Todd will realise what is going on and that this is not acceptable.

“This is a story that’s been told before, but it’s not been told quite in this way before – and I think that’s what will keep the audience really invested. We’re not rooting for this couple. We’re rooting for Todd. We’re rooting for Todd to see the light.

“As we take in George and Christina and Sarah, all these people who care about and love Todd, they are absolutely oblivious to what’s going on between the two behind closed doors. And it’s going to be really interesting to watch what happens when people do get a peek inside at what happens behind closed doors.”
