Occasional Digest - a story for you

THE Cotswolds is renowned for its beauty with quaint high streets and look of old England.

But it should also be known for its brilliant hotels and there’s one little village that is home to two of the best in the country.

Broadway in the Cotswolds sits midway between Evesham and Moreton-in-Marsh.

The village is often referred to as being the ‘jewel of the Cotswolds’ thanks to its honey-coloured stone buildings, and one visitor even described it as being a ‘dream’.

Over the weekend, it was revealed that two of Broadway’s hotels which are a five-minute walk from one another have scooped up prestigious awards.

They were honoured at The Good Hotel Guide Cesar Awards 2026 which is known for being the ‘Oscars of the UK hotel industry’.

Abbots Grange was awarded a Cesar for being the ‘Most Romantic Hotel’, while The House of George W Davies received one for being the ‘Best Foodie Hotel’.

Abbots Grange B&B is tucked away in the countryside and refers to itself as ‘Broadway’s Hidden Gem’.

It’s an adults-only B&B with ten bedrooms and suites that are each uniquely designed but keep the country feel with four poster beds and fireplaces.

Outside are eight acres of private gardens where there are plenty of activities like tennis courts and even a croquet lawn.

In the mornings, the hotel serves breakfast from continental to cooked options like grilled bacon, hash browns to smoked trout and kippers.

It doesn’t serve dinner, but there is the Pulpit Bar where guests can indulge in a drink from wines to ale, or opt for a coffee.

Every day between 3pm and 5pm, tea and homemade cake is served in the Great Hall which has a cosy log fire. In the summer it’s served in the gardens or summerhouse.

Meanwhile, The House of George W Davies is just north of the Broadway high street and is inside a 17th century building.

And if you recognise the name George W Davies – he is an English fashion designer and retailer known for creating brands like Next, George at Asda, and Per Una at Marks & Spencer.

The hotel has 10 bedrooms and as expected, the interiors are lovely with feature wallpapers and colour schemes like soft blues or deep greens.

The House of George W Davies was praised for its food and offers a nine-course tasting menu, an A La Carte, Lunch and Sunday Lunch menu.

There’s also the chance to try out private dining too.

There are plenty of tipples too from cocktails like Quince Daiquiri to a signature Ramblers Revenge, as well as Low & No choices.

As for Broadway itself, there are lots of shops to explore on the high street from arts and antiques to the Cotswolds Distillery Shop and Otis & Belle bakery.

There’s even a local perfumery called Scents on the Green as well as the Broadway Cookshop which has been in the village since 1991.

Like most Cotswolds villages, Broadway is popular especially during the summer time.

One visitor wrote on Tripadvisor: “Exquisitely beautiful village street – the houses and cottages are all so lovely. It’s the Cotswold Dream – and it’s real.”

Another described it as the ‘jewel in the Cotswold crown’.

For more popular spots, check out Broadway Tower, which stands on Beacon Hill and is the second highest point in the Cotswolds.

It’s 312 metres high and was originally built to send long distance signals.

Now it’s in the Broadway Tower & Park estate which is family owned and a popular place to visit.

Admission to the Broadway Tower Country Park starts from £4.19 (for adults) and £2.10 (for children between six and 16).

Other attractions on the site include the nuclear bunker as well as the Broadway Tower Museum.

Here’s another English town on the edge of the Cotswolds with award-winning pub and festivals…

The Cotswolds are undoubtedly one of the prettiest places to visit in the UK – but there is one particular town on the edge of the region which is lesser known.

Situated in the Evenlode Valley, Charlbury is a quaint Oxfordshire town with a number of festivals throughout the year.

One such festival is Charlbury Beer Festival which usually takes place in spring. During the festival, the Cricket Club takes place with 60 cask ales and over 18 craft beers from local breweries as well as live performances.

Another festival is the Riverside Festival, which BBC Radio 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq, claims to be “one of the top festivals in the UK”.

The festival is free and family-friendly, with a range of different music including rock, indie, jazz and folk.

Arguably, though, the most famous festival in the town is Wilderness music festival.

This year’s line-up included Aurora, Wet Leg, and Annie Mac – and there were also food-related guests like Prue Leith.

If you fancy a tipple, The Rose & Crown is a multi-time CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) award-winning pub.

The traditional spot is known for boasting a variety of real ales and hosts regular live music events including blues and country artists.

The pub itself dates back to 1688 and is often referred to locals as ‘Rosie’.

One visitor commented: ” Fantastic traditional pub. We visited for the winter beer festival, what a great experience.

“The pub was packed with 20+ beers on offer, a great selection with some very different and interesting ales.”
