I’m an England rugby star turned Gladiator in iconic gameshow – here’s the biggest challenge working in TV

AN England Women’s rugby star is inspiring the next generation in a unique way – by appearing on TV show Gladiators.

Jodie Ounsley, also known as Fury from BBC Gladiators, played for England‘s rugby sevens team as well as Sale Sharks and the Exeter Chiefs.

She was forced into an early retirement aged just 23 because of a shoulder injury, but has put her rugby skills to good use in her new role.

The Gladiators star told SunSport: “I naturally miss playing and just to see how much the sport’s growing. But on the other hand, I feel very privileged in what I’m doing now.

“Obviously being in a different field of work, on TV in a show like Gladiators, I love that I’m able to still showcase women’s rugby in a show like that through my character, Fury.

“Kids might see me as Fury tackling contenders and think, oh, she must play rugby and then now follow rugby. And I think that’s really powerful. I take so much pride in that.

“I just think of the bigger picture and if I can try and inspire the next generation to get into rugby, then that’s enough for me.

“I’ve stepped away now but never say never, I could go back to rugby in the future, but I’m gonna do everything I can to push the game and bring a new audience, new people to the game as well.”

Ounsley was born deaf and wears a cochlear implant, and has followed in her father’s footsteps by appearing on the show.

She is also a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu British champion and a five-time World Coal Carrying champion, but despite her individual accomplishments she still misses the team environment of rugby.

The 24-year-old continued: “It’s really different from going from a full-time team environment to then being pretty much on your own.

“So still very much lots of training. I mix it around now and I’m obviously not around a team, which is a bit different, but that’s the beauty of rugby.

“I miss my team because that’s what rugby’s about. It’s about being surrounded by your team-mates and you go through so much together.

“Big tournaments like the World Cup, even training, injuries, there’s so much to the game that people don’t even sort of get to see.

“So that’s the part I miss but I’m very happy where I am at the moment.”

Ounsley is also a proud supporter of the See It. Believe It. campaign as part of her role as a brand ambassador for Vodafone.

The campaign aims to dismantle misconceptions surrounding women’s rugby, with research showing 70 per cent of Brits who hold a negative opinion of the sport have never watched a match.

Ounsley said of the campaign: “It means a lot to me because obviously I’ve had my own journey in rugby.

“The whole meaning behind it is there is a whole misconception from people who have a negative view about women’s rugby. It’s people who haven’t even watched a game of women’s rugby.

“So I think it’s about trying to change that misconception but also getting a new audience and new people to watch the game.

“And then funnily enough, they come and watch the game and they realise they might actually like it. It’s like that throughout all women’s rugby, you always have those different opinions and how people sort of expect it to be.

“I think it’s just how we can change that and flip it to more of a positive light.

“The biggest thing is people try and think we’re trying to say, oh, it’s the same as the men’s game, but it’s really not, it’s just about showing that women love the game as much as anyone else.

“It is a really special game, regardless of what gender is playing it.

“It’s a game of rugby. It’s an exciting thing. It’s really just coming to watch a game of rugby. If you enjoy sport, then it shouldn’t really matter who was playing.”

Jodie Ounsley is proudly supporting Vodafone’s ‘See it. Believe it.’ campaign, which aims to challenge misconceptions about women’s rugby and connect the sport with new audiences.

As part of the campaign, Jodie is working with storytelling experts Goalclick to provide exclusive behind-the-scenes content from all levels of the game.

‘I was on BBC’s new gameshow Destination X and this is what really happens’

The first player to be eliminated from the BBC adventure gameshow, Destination X, has now revealed what it was really like being on the programme.

A contestant on Destination X has spilled the beans on what the BBC One gameshow is really like behind the scenes.

Deborah became the first player booted out of the competition in last night’s premiere, missing out on her shot at bagging £100,000.

The crime writer, 62, was amongst 13 strangers taking part in Rob Brydon’s adventure series, which sees the players set off on the journey of a lifetime across Europe.

With the continent turned into a massive board game, the participants must try to work out where they are in the world after being deprived of their senses on a coach and given a mix of clues and red herrings, reports Wales Online.

Combining elements of The Traitors and Race Across The World, the contestants must navigate through the lies and deception they face, with each episode seeing whoever guesses furthest from the actual location getting sent packing.

Last night, Deborah became the first Destination X star to get the chop, after three had already been abandoned at the airport and one had thrown in the towel.

She’s now spilled the beans in an exclusive interview about what the experience was truly like, and what viewers didn’t witness.

“I had the best time,” she reflected. “There’s such a great bunch of guys on the bus, and a massive team that looks after you.

“It is all a bit surreal, but I would do it again in a heartbeat.”

Discussing her tight-knit relationship with her fellow contestants, she continued: “The BBC has only got an hour, but we were on that bus for hours and hours, they showed clips of me looking discombobulated all the time.

“But in between those points, there were times I had to get off the bus and walk away because I was laughing so much.”

Following host Rob’s revelation of one backstage secret – that a convoy of portable toilets trailed behind the bus – Deborah then laid bare the harsh realities of coach life for days on end.

“You saw the loo on the bus, it’s not even Harry Potter’s cupboard under the stairs. And you’re so close to people all the time.”

She chuckled: “You come out of there and people ask, ‘how did you get on?'”

In addition to sensory deprivation onboard the bus, in the first episode, the contestants were asked to wear goggles while flying in an aeroplane, where Deborah revealed she even had a little nap.

But being unable to see their surroundings while travelling did risk taking its toll when it came to travel sickness.

Deborah explained: “The medic came along and said, ‘Does anybody get sea sickness, I’ve got some tablets,’ so at that stage in the proceedings we said, ‘Yeah, I’ll have it,’ but we didn’t know [about the helicopter], we thought it was just because the bus was going to go around some wiggly, windy things.

“So I had a tablet, yeah, and we were on the helicopter for a long time, and you can’t see anything, so I’m not going to lie, I had a bit of a sleep.”

Despite feeling “gutted” about being the first to be eliminated from the competition, Deborah described it as a “once in a lifetime” opportunity.

She revealed that she chose to participate in Destination X after realising “there’s more sand at the bottom of the egg timer than there is at the top”.

“You need to start having some adventures and living your life, because to not do that is disrespectful to those people who didn’t get to have a bit more life,” she expressed, sharing tales of her other escapades, including near-death experiences while skiing and scuba diving.

Now, she’s gearing up for an entirely different challenge, preparing for an Arctic expedition next year in collaboration with the Sue Ryder charity.

“I’m checking on my fitness because I’ve had both hips replaced and a stomach implant thing… but the guy in the Arctic thinks I’ll be alright to do it,” she shared.

“I did Tough Mudder over the weekend, last Saturday, and that was the hardest thing I’d done in my life, but I think the Arctic will be harder.”

Reflecting her adventurous spirit, when asked about her plans for the prize money, she added: “We’d all like a bit more, but I did it for the adventure, money can’t buy that adventure and those experiences.”

Destination X continues tonight at 9pm on BBC One and is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.

ITV ‘sign up’ huge soap actor and I’m A Celeb star for big money gameshow

ITV have reportedly made a huge move to sign up two actors with great ‘charisma’ to present a brand new gameshow to be aired on Saturday nights

TV fans are set for a real treat with ITV’s latest gameshow signings, according to reports. It’s suggested the channel is to welcome an “amazing duo on-screen” to front a new gameshow.

Claims suggest the top secret new Saturday evening show is set to air next year. And at the helm is said to be Rivals duo Danny Dyer and Emily Atack.

The former EastEnders man, 47, and star of The Inbetweeners, 35, will reportedly start filming to project later this year. It comes after their successful performance on Disney+’s Rivals.

The series, based on Jilly Cooper’s bonkbuster books, was well received by fans and saw the duo roundly praised for their roles. Now, a source has claimed it’s this accoladed that had the ITV bosses clamouring to sign the duo.

Speaking to the Sun, a source said: “Bosses have been impressed with Danny and Emily’s charisma on Rivals and thought they’d make an amazing duo on-screen to freshen up their entertainment talent.

“They’re an unlikely pair but have appeared on a few panel shows together and have plenty of fun energy that is perfect for the tone that ITV want to set. Producers are keen to trial new presenting partnerships to get people talking, and both Emily and Danny have huge appeal.”

And they added: “ITV is constantly trying to create the next big show and duo. It’s about getting the chemistry just right.”

It continues Danny’s huge life turnaround. The actor has been open about his previous struggles in recent years. He revealed the moment of clarity to make a change to his life after he was “slowly killing himself” as he was “off his head” after the National TV Awards.

Looking back at his plight with interviewer Louis Theroux, Danny said previously he knew he was “destroying himself” and his career. And he admitted that at the time he was on EastEnders playing Mick Carter, but he would head into rehab in Cape Town in 2016.

He said: “I had a moment of clarity where I had been on it all night after the NTAs. I think I’d won and that’s always on like a Tuesday or something and I had to go to work. There’s another thing with EastEnders, is that they go, yeah, come celebrate NTAs, but you are up at seven in the morning. So anyway, I’d just overdone it again and I just could not work out how to get my jeans on.

“I was just sitting on my ensuite toilet trying to work out what leg goes in what, and I don’t why. I’ve sort of had many of them moments over the years of me being completely off my head.

” But that one really resonated with me. It was more because I looked up, my wife was just watching me and she looked shattered and she looked ill.”

As he continued to open up about the moment, he then revealed he made the decision to go to rehab in Cape Town after this awards show after-party at his house.

Dad-of-three Danny also previously told the BBC receiving a letter from his daughter Dani while at a rehab facility in 2016 was what convinced him to continue his treatment.
