Target is recalling about 204,000 weighted blankets after federal regulators say two young girls died of asphyxiation earlier this year.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Thursday the Pillowfort weighted blankets are being recalled because children can be in entrapped inside it by unzipping and entering the blanket, raising the chance of asphyxiation.
Federal officials said a 4-year-old girl and 6-year-old girl reportedly became entrapped in blankets at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina in April and died due to asphyxia.
The CPSC added Target has received two additional reports of children becoming entrapped in the blankets.
The blankets, manufactured in China, were sold in Target stores nationwide and online from December 2018 through September 2022 for $40.
The blankets weigh six pounds and are 60 inches long by 40 inches wide and have a removable, waterproof and washable covers. They come in eight prints or colors, and affected blankets have a fabric tag attached to the removable covers:

How to get a refund from Target for recalled weighted blankets
The CPSC and Target are urging people who have bought the blankets to immediately stop using them and contact Target for a refund.
Purchasers can contact at 800-440-0680 from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. ET daily to receive a prepaid return label to return the blankets by mail or return at any Target location.
Those returning the blankets will be given a refund of $40 in Target credit.
Target said in a statement to USA TODAY it is in the process of alerting known consumers of the blanket.
“We send our deepest condolences and support to the family that lost their loved ones. As soon as we became aware of the situation, we acted quickly to begin removing Pillowfort Weighted Blankets from our assortment and have pulled all of these items from sale,” Target said. “If a guest owns any of these products, they should immediately stop using them and return them to Target for a full refund.”
