Occasional Digest - a story for you

Commissioner Selwyn Patterson’s future was up in the air when he was replaced by someone else on Death In Paradise, but could he be getting his job back?

Commissioner Selwyn Patterson will get some big news on Death In Paradise this week. As the series wraps tonight with a brand new episode, there looks to finally be an update on Selwyn’s future.

Fans of the BBC detective drama had been worried about what might happen to Don Warrington’s character, after he was replaced in his role as Commissioner of Saint Marie. His replacement wad found trying to shut down the case into the death of Mervin’s mother Donna Bray, but soon Mervin worked out that she was killed.

Whilst fans had suspected this meant Selwyn might be able to return, the news has seemingly been confirmed in a brand new clip. Speaking in the clip shared exclusively with The Mirror, the team are chatting about the Commissioner’s job.

“I expect things will be back to normal in no times,” Mervin says before he hands over his keys as he is leaving the island too. It’s then that a woman walks in to report a missing person, with Mervin seemingly conflicted about leaving Saint Marie himself.

There has been much talk about Selwyn’s future on the island throughout the series after he had the bombshell dropped on him.

Asked how Selwyn reacted to the news, Don said: “Not well. It’s shocking for him, and he does his best to get the superiors to change their decision and see things differently … It’s very interesting because we discover other aspects of Selwyn and that’s always the joy about playing a character like him – there are so many different sides to him.

“You think you know about somebody but due to life events, you learn more about them. He’s opening up, he’s a bit like a flower coming in to bloom.”

This series marks Don Gilet’s first as DI Mervin Wilson – but will he be staying on the island? Speaking about his character’s feeling towards the island, he said: “He’s quite vocal about coming into a place where he’s battling with a temperature that he’s not used to. He didn’t realise how much he took for granted in London until he went somewhere that works at a different pace.

“He expects the same in Saint Marie, but – as we’ve seen already – he soon learns things don’t happen as quickly as they would back home. He doesn’t want to be there for very long because he wasn’t even meant to be on the island as a ‘Detective’, he was there as just Mervin. He’s not a well-travelled guy. He’s a British guy, a Londoner – he loves his fish and chips and home comforts.”
