Dec. 16 (UPI) — Police in Madison, Wis., say five people are dead in a mass shooting at a Christian school.

The alleged shooter at Abundant Life Christian School has been found dead, Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said early Monday afternoon during a news conference.

“We believe the shooter was a student at the school,” he added.

The incident was first reported after 11 a.m. local time, authorities said.

Among the victims include the alleged juvenile believed to be responsible for the shooting. ABC News reports said the shooter is “down” in initial reports. The alleged shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot, according to reports.

Additionally, seven victims were transferred to hospital with “minor injures to life threatening.”

Barnes said it is “an ever-evolving situation” and “there’s a lot of work that needs to be done” at “tragic, tragic scene.”

He would not give further information on the victims until families had been alerted, he said. “We’re still going through and collecting evidence,” he added.

Barnes said it was a “sad day for our community and our country.”

The police department did not fire their weapons, according to Barnes. Training on responding to shootings was ongoing the same day at a training center three miles away, he added.

The school is nondenominational and has about 390 students enrolled from kindergarten through 12th grade.
