The fight against maternal and infant mortality in Niger Republic has received a significant financial boost. On Saturday, Dec. 14, 880 million FCFA (about 1.4 million US dollars) was raised during the launch of a national campaign against maternal and infant mortality in the country.
The occasion, which took place in the Niamey Congress Hall, was presided over by the country’s Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine. Also in attendance were the Minister of Health, Colonel Garba Hakimi and Ambassador for the Fight Against Maternal and Prenatal Deaths, Madam Brah Reki Djermakoye.
The funds raised would go towards the reinforcement of health infrastructures, ameliorating prenatal and postnatal treatment, and supporting sensitisation programmes with the objective of attaining “zero risk” for women and children of the country. The launching marks the beginning of a campaign which will last till January 14, 2025.
Speaking during the occasion, Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine noted that maternal deaths are “a tragedy which haunts women since the beginning of time”, and he saluted the progress realised due to improved healthcare. He also emphasised the necessity to continue with the efforts to attain “zero risk”.
The campaign, which is based on the presidential vision of “Laabu Sanni No-Zancen Kaasa Ne,” aims to reinforce social reforms, particularly those that benefit infant and maternal health.
On her part, the Minister of Health presented an ambitious plan of action that included sensitisation of communities, reinforcement of prenatal and postnatal treatment, advocacy for appropriate infrastructures, and putting in place a mechanism of follow-up and evaluation of financial activities.
Madam Brah Reki Djermakoye commended the advances made in the Issaka Gazobi maternity and also underlined the challenges linked to the few health structures. She called for the continued mobilisation to humanise health services.
The campaign is an initiative for the amelioration of the quality of treatment and reducing maternal and prenatal deaths in Niger Republic.
The collection of the said funds reflects the national solidarity that will enable the reduction of crowding in maternities, reinforce infrastructures and mobilise qualified health personnel.
