License PhotoSept. 24 (UPI) — President Joe Biden is expected to address diplomatic victories and the ongoing wars in Ukraine, Gaza, and Sudan in his final United Nations General Assembly speech as president on Tuesday.
Biden who is serving his final months in office after dropping out of a chance for re-election this summer, will focus his speech on how the United States rallied the Western allies to aid Ukraine, managing global competition with China while emphasizing the importance of the United Nations Charter.
“He came into office four years ago with a vision of America returning to the world stage, having a new way of interacting with other countries bringing countries together to solve some of those big challenges,” a senior White House administrator said, according to CBS News
Biden’s speech comes in the wake of Hamas‘ Oct. 7 attack on Israel in which nearly 1,200 people were killed and hundreds taken hostage and the ensuing fallout of Israel’s response in Gaza that has killed 41,467 Palestinians, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry’s latest update.
Biden is expected to address ongoing efforts to reach a cease-fire deal in Gaza and free the remaining hostages.
The threat of an expansion of the conflict into Lebanon also looms over Biden’s speech as the United States sent additional troops to the Middle East on Monday after Israel launched strikes that killed more than 400 people, while targeting the Hezbollah militant group with additional attacks reported Tuesday.
After his speech, Biden is expected to hold high-level meetings with a score of global leaders who will be in New York to take part in their speeches.
“This is one of the advantages of the U.N. General Assembly: You literally have the whole world here,” an administration official said, according to CNBC News. “So, when you do have crises of the day, they’ll be addressed.”
