BREAKFAST lost a little of its shine this week with the news that Weetabix has axed the popular Lyle’s Golden Syrup flavour.

The sweeter version of the biscuits hit shelves in April 2022.

A Weetabix spokesman said it was “proud of its broad range of nutritious and tasty Weetabix cereals, and regularly review the line up in response to changing tastes and requests”.

But with brand prices steadily rising, we put supermarket-own wholegrain biscuits to the test to see how they compare to Weetabix.

EXACTLY the same price as many of the supermarket options.

These wheat biscuits are a flavour winner, with a hearty taste and super texture that holds up well in the breakfast bowl.

Made with milled and toasted British wheat.

Nutritious – it’s just a shame about the excessive, tricky packaging.

Harvest Morn Wheat Bisks (36), £2.05, cost per biscuit: 6p, Aldi

A BUMPER box, perfect for keeping the family going at breakfast without running out too quickly.

Made with 95 per cent wholewheat, malted barley extract, vitamins and minerals, low in sugar and salt.

A bit bland and not as robust, they went soggy quickly in milk.

Still, a quick, healthy, budget-friendly brekkie that sets you up for the day nicely.

BIG brand is a pricier way to start your day, at double the cost of others.

That adds up, especially for families. Ingredients are identical to many supermarket own brands, including 95 per cent wholewheat, malted barley extract, vitamins and minerals.

They do not dissolve immediately, but why splurge when cheaper options taste just as good?

NICE brekkie biccies, perfect for a nutritious start to your day. Two might not feel kingly, but you won’t need a royal ransom to buy them.

Affordable and tasty, they are an excellent big brand swap to save on your weekly budget.

Try them with some warm milk for an afternoon snack.

If it wasn’t for the box, you’d think this was a top brand. Same texture, taste and sweetness as the market leader.

Outstanding value for money, this was my fave.

MADE with 95 per cent wholewheat and malted barley extract, these biscuits are fortified with iron and B vitamins.

They are brilliantly healthy with no added nasties.

Nice and crunchy, they only soften slightly in milk.

The texture and taste are spot on, and you hardly notice they are a bit thinner than the big name.

Not much difference in flavour or texture from the original brand, though slightly more squishy in milk.

The bright orange box is a fun, high-quality touch.

Made with 95 per cent wholewheat and malted barley extract, the ingredients and flavour are nearly identical.

They are as healthy as they are affordable.

No sogginess either! A no-brainer for your shopping trolley.
