Brentford have agreed a deal worth in the region of £25m for Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg.

The 22-year-old has been at the west London club’s training ground finalising terms on a contract after choosing Brentford over a number of other clubs keen to sign him.

German champions Bayer Leverkusen were the last club in the bidding war but Brentford are confident they have seen off the competition.

There remains some concern at Brentford of a U-turn by the Dutchman, having been close to signing midfielder Archie Gray in June, only to lose out on him to Tottenham.

But Van den Berg, who spent last season on loan at German club Mainz, is expected to join Thomas Frank’s Brentford squad.

Van den Berg joined Liverpool from Dutch side PEC Zwolle in 2019 but has made only four senior appearances for the Reds, having also spent 18 months on loan at Preston North End.
