Occasional Digest - a story for you

In a remarkable show of support, Pakistan has been elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the term 2025-2026. The elections, held by the UN General Assembly in New York, saw Pakistan securing an overwhelming majority of votes, underscoring the international community’s recognition of its contributions to global peace and security. This also marks a significant milestone in Pakistan’s diplomatic history, providing a renewed platform for the country to continue its legacy of promoting international stability and cooperation.

Pakistan’s Previous Terms on the UNSC

This is not the first time Pakistan has been entrusted with this critical prize. Pakistan has previously served on the UNSC as a non-permanent member on seven occasions. In its first term 1952-1953, Pakistan emphasized the need for a unified Korea during the Korean War and supported balanced approaches to the Arab-Israeli Conflict. In its second term 1968-1969, Pakistan called for an end to hostilities in Vietnam and contributed to the discussions on the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), advocating for nuclear disarmament. During the 1976-1977 term, Pakistan vocally opposed apartheid in South Africa and continued to support Middle East peace initiatives. In the 1983-1984 term, Pakistan addressed the Lebanon              Crisis and called for peaceful negotiations during the Falklands War. Throughout the 1993-1994 term, Pakistan was active in the Bosnian War, advocating for international intervention to stop ethnic cleansing and supporting humanitarian efforts in Somalia. During the 2003-2004 term, Pakistan emphasized the importance of international law in resolving the Iraq War and played a significant role in counter-terrorism discussions post-9/11. In its most recent term 2012-2013, Pakistan advocated for a peaceful resolution to the Syrian Civil War, supported UN interventions in Mali, and continued its longstanding support for the Palestinian cause.

Pakistan has consistently highlighted the importance of UN peacekeeping and mediation efforts, contributing significantly to UN peacekeeping missions under challenging environments such as Congo, Liberia, and the Central African Republic. Throughout its UNSC tenure, Pakistan has been a staunch advocate for multilateralism, emphasizing collective action and international cooperation to address global challenges while upholding the principles of the UN Charter, including respect for sovereignty, non-interference, and peaceful coexistence.

Contributions to UN Peacekeeping Missions

One of Pakistan’s most commendable contributions to the United Nations has been its consistent and significant involvement in peacekeeping missions. Since 1960, Pakistan has been one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping forces, with over 200,000 troops participating in 46 missions across four continents. Pakistani peacekeepers have served in some of the most challenging environments, including missions in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and the Central African Republic.

As of June 2024, Pakistan has deployed approximately 5,000 military and police personnel in various UN peacekeeping missions, making it the sixth-largest contributor.

In recent years, Pakistan has been vocal in calling for a comprehensive approach to counter-terrorism that addresses the root causes of extremism. It has actively participated in global counter-terrorism initiatives and has made significant strides in combating terrorism within its borders. Pakistan’s efforts have been recognized internationally, contributing to a safer and more secure global environment. Besides, Pakistan has maintained a principled stance on the Gaza genocide, by strongly condemning Israel’s military aggression against Rafah city in Gaza and the resulting destruction and massacre of the Palestinian people.

A Platform for Continued Contribution

Being elected to the UNSC once again provides Pakistan with an invaluable platform to contribute to global peace and security. This opportunity allows Pakistan to bring its unique perspective and experience to the Council, particularly in addressing issues related to regional stability, conflict resolution, and international cooperation.

Addressing Regional Conflicts

Pakistan’s strategic location and historical context provide it with a deep understanding of regional dynamics, particularly in South Asia and the Middle East. On the UNSC, Pakistan can play a crucial role in addressing conflicts in these regions, advocating for solutions that promote stability and peace. Its longstanding position on the Kashmir issue, for instance, emphasizes the need for a peaceful resolution in accordance with UN resolutions, ensuring the rights and aspirations of the Kashmiri people are respected.

Promoting Multilateralism

Pakistan’s foreign policy is deeply rooted in the principles of multilateralism. On the UNSC, Pakistan can champion the cause of multilateral cooperation, working towards strengthening international institutions and promoting a rules-based international order. This is particularly important in the face of global challenges such as climate change, terrorism, and pandemics, which requires collective action and cooperation.

Enhancing Peacekeeping Efforts

With its extensive experience in UN peacekeeping, Pakistan can contribute significantly to discussions on enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of peacekeeping operations. It can advocate for better training, equipment, and support for peacekeepers, ensuring they are well-prepared to address the complex challenges they face in the field. Pakistan can also highlight the importance of protecting civilians in conflict zones and ensuring that peacekeeping missions have clear and achievable mandates.

Pakistan’s election to the UNSC for the term 2025-2026 is a testament to its enduring commitment to global peace and security. With its rich history of contributions to the UN and its steadfast dedication to multilateralism, Pakistan is well-positioned to play a pivotal role in addressing the pressing issues facing the international community today. This opportunity not only allows Pakistan to further its foreign policy objectives but also to contribute to the broader goal of a more peaceful and stable world. As Pakistan takes its seat on the UNSC, it does so with the support and confidence of the international community, ready to continue its legacy of promoting peace, stability, and cooperation on the global stage.

In a time frame when the global world order is facing a melting point and where more than two dozen active conflict zones or friction points are eminent, the importance of the UNSC’s role, cannot be over-emphasized. Pakistan being a non-permanent member and experienced player can play its role towards world peace in a meaningful manner.
