Occasional Digest - a story for you

A LUXURY motor Jeremy Clarkson once dubbed as being “truly enormous” can now be picked up for less than £14,000.

The TV presenter and former Top Gear host, 64, said of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class estate that it had a huge boot.

In a review for The Sunday Times in 2017 he wrote: “ With the rear seats folded flat, you get 1,820 litres of space in which to put your things.

“The Audi A6 gives you 1,680. The BMW 5-series 1,670 and the Volvo V90 a mere 1,526.

“So if you are an antiques dealer, or you often take luggage-laden families to the airport, the new E-class is a clear winner.”

The car, powered by a 2-litre turbodiesel engine, was no slouch either, producing 192bhp and a top speed of 146mph.

Clarkson also liked the car because it was comfortable and “incredibly quiet”.

Although, on the downside the petrolhead didn’t think it was fun to drive and also wasn’t impressed by the dashboard.

He wrote: “It appears to be made from some kind of weird grained wood that’s as black as ebony but matt rather than shiny.

“So you lean forwards for a feel and, whoa, it’s plastic disguised to look like wood — and that’s horrible.”

Back in 2017, a new E-Class estate would set you back £40,725.

Nowadays, they can be picked up for a lot less.

Autotrader currently has an E-Class estate from 2016 advertised for £12,880 – and that’s with the 2-litre engine.

It has had two previous owners and has clocked up 96,300 miles.

Also in 2017, Clarkson gave The Sun his verdict on the Mercedes E-Class coupe.

While elsewhere, the presenter was left “drooling” by a hot hatch he described as “really rather marvellous”.

Elsewhere, an iconic 1980s sports car is rumoured for a revival, 16 years after it was discontinued.

It comes after a super rare Lamborghini that is one of just three of its kind went up for sale at an eye-watering price.
