According to 72-year-old supermodel JoAni Johnson, who looks years younger than her age, skincare “is both an inside and outside job”.
She has a “must-have” three-step regime and loves chugging on a particular drink for its anti-ageing benefits.
“When I was younger, I had more skin issues than I do now, including breakouts and partial oily patches,” she told British Vogue.
“During the menopause years, I stopped wearing make-up as I found it didn’t mix well with hot flashes.
“As time passed, along with hormonal changes, I found my skin becoming drier and more sensitive to seasonal climate and temperature changes.
“My pores became more visible, and there is more differentiation in pigment in certain areas – for example, darkness under my eyes.”
THREE STEP STYLE
JoAni, from New York, US, devised her “must-have three-step regime” on the back of hormonal changes to her skin during the menopause.
It consists of a “good cleanser”, toner and moisturiser.
“My must-have three-step regime includes a good cleanser, because our environment leaves so much daily residue on my skin,” she explained.
“I use the S’Able Labs Qasil Cleanser (£28), which makes easy work of thoroughly cleansing and rehydrating my skin.
“Next, I use the S’Able Black Seed Toner (£35) to reduce the look of pores and clarify my skin.”
“I finish with the S’Able Baobab Moisturiser (£50) to hydrate,” JoAni continued.
“This moisturiser absorbs quickly, leaving my skin glowing and keeping it supple all day.
“Once a week, I’ll treat myself to a face mask to tone and relax my skin, along with a good cup of tea.”
TEA TIME
Tea is JoAni’s secret ingredient to glowing skin at 72-years-old.
“I’m a tea industry specialist and have travelled to study tea and its beneficial effects on my body,” she said.
“I have always leaned towards products which have tea as an ingredient.”
Most teas but particularly the green kind are rich in potent antioxidants to protect the skin from outside stressors – such as pollution and UV damage.
Why is Green Tea So Benefical for Skin?
Christine Choi Kim MD, a board-certified dermatologist, believes a cup of green tea a day is the perfect addition to your skincare routine.
- Green tea is rich in potent antioxidants, which help neutralise free radicals in the skin
- Free radicals are molecules in the air that are capable of damaging cells and causing premature ageing
- Green tea can help maintain a youthful appearance by protecting your complexion from free radicals
- As a result, this prevents wrinkles and fine lines
“Due to its multifaceted nature, green tea has been studied as a treatment for a variety of dermatological conditions,” Christine said.
“It is truly suitable for most all skin types, unless you have a known hypersensitivity to green tea.”
By protecting the skin from oxidative stress, tea can help maintain a youthful appearance, and prevent wrinkles and fine lines.
“I believe skincare is both an inside and outside job,” JoAni added.
“I work on maintaining a good vitamin regimen; I take vitamin C, vitamin D3, zinc, turmeric and ginger.
“I focus on replenishing nutrients I may be lacking, as recommended by my physician.
