Starting off with your carpet, experts believe this is the core to making sure your home smells and looks clean.

If you never clean your carpet, it will become full and begin to release bacteria and bad odours into the air – which can ultimately lead to serious health problems.

Homeowners may think it could be costly to do a deep clean to your carpet, but experts believe it doesn’t have to be.

Home experts at Online-Bedrooms.co.uk have revealed how to tackle stubborn carpet stains with household items costing as little as 27p.

They have revealed eight cheap hacks to quickly lift tough carpet stains and prevent hours of hard scrubbing.

Carpets can be one of the most difficult materials to get stains out of, especially if a spillage has gone unnoticed and has been left to seep into the fibres.

However, tough stains can be lifted using household items such as salt, washing up liquid, shampoo and shaving cream.

They can be used to get rid of various types of stains from wine spillages to chewing gum.

Nic Shacklock, an expert at Online-Bedrooms.co.uk, said: “Carpet stains can be an absolute nightmare to clean especially if they’ve been sitting there unnoticed for weeks.

“These stains can be lifted with some common household items meaning you won’t have to spend a fortune having to get the entire floor deep cleaned.

“Washing up liquid is a great solution to getting rid of mud marks and baking soda can remove any lingering odours.”

Shaving foam

The substance can help to easily remove grease stains, pen marks and juice spillages.

It can also be used to remove smudged makeup stains on the carpet.

Spray the stain with shaving foam, let it sit for half an hour and then blot the area with a clean cloth.

Baking soda

Sprinkling baking soda can help lift older stains which have submerged themselves into the carpet.

Sprinkle the substance over the stain and vacuum afterwards. It will also remove any foul-smelling odours.

White vinegar

White vinegar is an effective tool in getting rid of spillages around the house. It also works to remove pen marks.

Douse the stain in white vinegar and scrub over it with the abrasive side of a sponge.

Washing up liquid

A mix of washing up liquid and warm water can help lift deeper stains and bring them to the surface.

It’s also a great way to get rid of any mud which has been pressed into the ground.

Salt

A cup of 27p salt will help to absorb any fresh spillages such as coffee or wine without having to scrub on the floor for ages.

Leave it to soak up the liquid and wipe it down afterwards with a warm cloth.

Baby powder

It has a similar effect to lifting up stains as baking soda does. Sprinkle the powder around the entire carpet and vacuum it afterwards for a fresh-smelling scent.

Lemons

A lemon can be a super cleaner in removing juice stains off the carpet. Slice the fruit in half and scrub it directly on the stain.

Shampoo

Apply shampoo onto a sponge and gently rub it into the stain on the carpet.

Avoid using too much shampoo as it may cause discolouration in the material.
