Unfortunately for two Emmerdale residents, this meant their time in the village could be coming to an abrupt end.
ITV viewers will remember that Rishi Sharma was found dead at the bottom of his staircase earlier this year, just as his adoptive son Jai Sharma (portrayed by Chris Bisson) walked down the aisle with Laurel Thomas (Charlotte Bellamy).
While fans of the Yorkshire-based drama were convinced Rishi’s death was the result of foul play, the theory was completely ruled out by the authorities.
Rishi’s demise was deemed accidental but there was still one secret that remained to be uncovered.
During a recent instalment of the long-running program, Rishi’s brother Amit (Anil Goutam) revealed he’d been present the day his sibling fell down his stairs and to his death.
Fans were, once again, convinced Rishi was murdered and Amit seemed like the perfect culprit as he kept the truth hidden from Jai.
But during tonight’s trip to the Dales, Amit had no choice other than telling Jai, his biological son, the truth about Rishi’s death.
In a shocking twist, after admitting he was present on the fateful day, Amit was arrested following a call from Jai about him potentially murdering Rishi.
Amit was dragged into a police car in front of many Dales residents before being thoroughly questioned.
Later on in the episode, Amit was released and decided to head to the Woolpack where he bumped into his other son, Suni Sharma (Brahmdeo Shannon Ramana).
Amit was convinced Suni had made him look like a murderer and refused to speak with him.
He was eventually pushed out of the pub when Rishi’s good friend Jimmy King (Nick Miles) squared up to him publicly.
Suni and Amit later had a tense conversation, which prompted the latter to face Jai and tell him everything he knew about Rishi’s death.
“He slipped and fell. I swear to you, that’s all that happened”, Amit repeated.
Although he insisted he was innocent, Amit was unable to convince Jai, who insisted he’d never be able to forgive him.
And in another shocking twist, Jai decided to kick both Amit AND Suni out of Holdgate Farm.
“I want you gone. Both of you and I never want to see you again”, Jai raged.
Meanwhile, viewers of the long-running program swarmed over to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their thoughts – and a handful of them still struggle to believe Amit is completely blameless.
One wrote: “No Amit you haven’t convinced me!”
Another added: “Amit is a liar…”
And a third said: “Jai should shout ‘get out of my house’!”
