But a recipe from Jamie Oliver should make the little green vegetables go down a treat thanks to a secret £1 ingredient.
The celebrity chef urges households to celebrate the humble sprout with this “insanely delicious recipe” that takes just 30 minutes to make.
Most people turn their nose up at sprouts – but let’s be honest, boiling them in water isn’t going to make them taste very good.
But his ‘best-ever’ sprout recipe promises to make them taste so much better.
The recipe can be made on the day or made in advance and crisped up in the oven when ready to serve.
To start, trim the Brussels sprouts and peeling away at any tatty outer leaves, halving any larger ones and keeping the smaller ones whole.
Cook the sprouts in a large pan of boiling salted water for five minutes, then drain and leave to steamdry.
Grab a frying pan and melt the butter on a medium-low heat.
Pick and add half the sage leaves and cook for three minutes until crispy and put aside in a bowl.
Place the frying pan back on the heat and squeeze sausage meat from the skins into the pan and break it up with your spoon.
Cook until golden and crisp while you peel and slice an onion and chop the remaining sage.
Add them to the pan and cook for five more minutes on a medium-high heat with the sausage meat.
While it’s cooking, peel and core an apple and finely dice it and tip it into the pan.
Add the sprouts as well and finish off with Worcestershire sauce and toss until hot all the way through.
You can then serve the dish and add the crispy sage leaves on top to garnish.
Jamie claims that the Worcestershire sauce is his “secret ingredient” as it gives a contrasting savoury kick.
You can purchase Tesco‘s own brand Worcester Sauce for just £1 for 150ml if you don’t have it in your cupboard already.
