The security situation in northeastern Nigeria continues to deteriorate as terrorists target vulnerable civilians in a series of brazen attacks. 

The latest incident involves a businessman, Kellum Alhaji-Gana, based in Maiduguri, who was tragically killed today during a suspected Boko Haram assault on his farm near Bama town. The assailants reportedly intended to abduct Alhaji-Gana and his workers.

The news of Alhaji-Gana’s death has rapidly spread through social media, prompting grief and outrage among family members, friends, and associates.

According to sources familiar with the incident, the attackers stormed the farm and surrounded the workers in an attempt to abduct them.  Alhaji-Gana was fatally shot when he resisted the abduction.

Family members say Alhaji-Gana left Maiduguri on Sunday morning to supervise the harvest at his farm in Bama, where he encountered his tragic end.

“A little over an hour after he left, he was attacked,” said Yagana Abba, one of them. “He had told his wife that he was going to bring some of the beans being harvested on his farm.”

Abba further explained that four other people accompanied him to the farm. 

“Kellum was the only one killed because he resisted being taken away.”

Witnesses from neighboring farms reported seeing Alhaji-Gana struggle with his assailants, appearing to overpower them due to his sizable stature, before the attackers finally shot him.”

Attacks on farmers in Borno state have become a disturbingly common occurrence, particularly during the peak of the harvest season.

HumAngle had reported last week how a police officer in Bama was killed by gunmen while harvesting crops on his farm. 

HumAngle contacted the acting Police Public Relations Officer, Daso Nahum, who confirmed the incident even as he declined comments on the details. 

“We are aware of the incident of attack in Bama today, but I’ve not gotten any communication or directive from the CP yet,” he said.
