She explained that it’s a recipe for disaster and can create mold and DIY-ing the recipe yourself can even be worse.
Renae (@renduh) shared her disapproval of the heating trick with over 690,000 TikTok followers.
She reacted to a video recommending using a clothes dryer to vent the air.
“Do indoor dryer venting kits exist? Absolutely but those kits are designed to keep the heat and humidity contained,” she said.
While the trick can work very well, she added a huge caveat to the advice given.
“When you pump hot and humid air into an enclosed space, you know what grows really well in humid, enclosed spaces? Mold, it’s mold,” she emphasized.
She also warned against DIY-ing an indoor dryer kit, especially if you own a gas dryer.
“That’s just going to make a lot more carbon monoxide,” she explained.
For those who have exhausted their options, she said the method was fine: “If your dryer is electric and you are venting it inside because you have no other option, that’s okay,” she said.
“You at least want to make sure it’s in a decently ventilated area so you don’t have any extra humidity hanging around.”
People took to the comments to share their thoughts on her advice — many were concerned about the reach of the viral video.
“Welp, now I’m concerned how many US colleges do this for dorms to save on money,” said one commenter.
“We are so dry in the high desert it works well here but like you said only if it’s a must,” said another.
