Australia’s women’s soccer team the Matildas are currently batting it out in stage two of qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
And tonight they take on Chinese Taipei in their final game of the Asian qualifiers in Perth, having already played Iran and the Philippines.
Here’s what you need to know about tonight’s game and what a win or loss will mean for their position in the group.
What time does the Matildas’ game kick off?
The game against Chinese Taipei starts tonight at 10:00pm AEDT at Perth Rectangular Stadium.
How can I watch the Matildas game tonight?
The clash will be shown on 10 Bold in Western Australia, Queensland and the Northern Territory, and Channel 10 in all other states and territories. It can also be streamed on 10Play and Paramount+.
You can stay across all the action with our live blog over at abc.net.au/sport, while all Matildas matches will be called live on ABC digital and the ABC Listen app.
What happens if the Matildas win tonight?
The Matildas have secured two wins in the group so far, beating Iran 2-0 and the Philippines 8-0.
The Matildas’ sensational win against the Philippines on Sunday thrust them to the top of Group A on six points.
To guarantee progression to the final stage of qualification in February, all they need is a draw against Chinese Taipei tonight.
If the Matildas lose, they will either top the group or are highly likely to qualify as the best runner-up from the three pools.
How does women’s football work in the Olympics?
If the Matildas make it past the Olympic qualifiers (keep your fingers crossed Australia), they will compete against 12 nations vying for Olympic gold.
The Paris 2024 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament will be held from 24 July to 10 August across France.
Here’s a quick rundown on how the tournament works.
The teams that qualify for the Olympics are split into different pools based on a random seeded draw. From there, the tournament is split into two phases:
- Group stage — Each team plays three matches in the round-robin group stage. Only eight teams advance. Teams earn three points for a win, one point for a draw, and zero points for a loss.
- Knockout stage — There is a single elimination quarterfinals, semifinals, and the two medal matches. The losers from the semifinal play for bronze, while the two winners play for gold.
