Sept. 29 (UPI) — UAW President Shawn Fain on Friday expanded the autoworker strike against Ford and GM, citing a lack of progress in negotiations.

Fain called for an additional 7,000 workers at Ford’s Chicago Assembly and GM’s Lansing Michigan Delta Township plant to join the strike that began a week ago.

“Without the strike weapon, the war on workers is a rigged fight,” Fain said, adding that Ford and GM “have refused to make progress” at the bargaining table.

He added, however, that moments before he began his Facebook Live video announcement, Stellantis came to the union with progress, so he would not call for more strikes against that company.

Fain said talks have not broken down and UAW negotiators are working “day and night” to reach a deal with all three Detroit automakers. He said the union is hopeful of reaching an agreement with all three.

He said the UAW’s movement to achieve significant gains for workers is “fighting everywhere” and not just in Michigan.

“Not a single wheel will turn without us, and that’s what happening across the supply chain,” Fain said of the UAW strike actions. “Our union is back in the fight and we’re not backing down from anybody.”

The UAW president said the companies have been dragging out bargaining until the last minute.

“It’s the war of the working class versus corporate greed. The workers are the liberators and the strike is our weapon of liberation,” Fain added.

Fain said he was concerned about “multiple cases of violence against” UAW picketers.

“Guns pulled on us, trucks and cars rolled through us. We will not be intimidated into backing down by the companies or their scabs,” he said.

Fain said worker solidarity is the most powerful force in the world.

“When we stand together in the cause for social justice, there’s nothing we can’t do.”

The UAW Friday also announced casino workers in Detroit will take strike authorization votes at MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino and Hollywood at Greektown.

Workers at the casinos are represented by the Detroit Casino Council, a group of five unions, including the UAW.
