Evans was also unlucky to have a goal ruled out as Rasmus Hojlund was stood in an offside position.

Despite Burnley putting in a good effort, Evans was able to help Man United keep a clean sheet and win their first game after three straight defeats.

On his podcast, he said, “I’m going to speak openly about this.

“When I saw Jonny Evans in the team… he’s been a fantastic defender for Man United and Man City wanted him three or four years ago, and Pep Guardiola doesn’t pick mugs.

“But I thought, ‘Oh, Jonny’ [and] at the end of my career at Man Utd, I had a couple of games where people went past me and I was isolated.

“I thought it was a game which could have finished Jonny, if those Burnley forwards got at him.

“I was happy for him, because I had fear about how it was going to go.”

Evans claimed that the night was the “best in his life” as he made his second full club debut and 200th appearance.

Fernandes was given the Man of the Match award for his performance, but he gave it to the defender.
