Whilst a growing number of beauty fans have chosen to embrace their grey locks, many choose to dye their hair the second the colour starts to fade away.
However, although it might give you the desired effect for a while, the joys don’t last long, and you’re left with a ”messy” appearance.
Fortunately, a professional hairdresser has taken to TikTok to offer a helping hand by sharing a few tips and tricks.
According to Rosie Baylis, from Royal Tunbridge Wells, people tend to make a crucial mistake when it comes to applying the dye onto their roots.
”You will always stay feeling unkempt and messy, unless you change the problem with your colour…
”Roots- when they aren’t blended, the contrast between your hair colour & the roots will be so high and stand out within a matter of days,” she explained in the video.
The solutions here, she said, are two options – either putting up with it or trying a different way of doing things.
If you’ve opted for the latter, Rosie advised to choose a low-maintenance colour – “anything that leaves your natural hair alone and only adjusts the mids and ends,” as one whizz, Lorena M. Valdes, told the Glamour Magazine.
A great tip here, Lorena added, is asking for balayage which is ”amazing for low-maintenance hair colour as it starts off as a soft point at the root to a thicker ribbon towards the bottom, which mimics what the sun does to our hair naturally”.
Meanwhile, celebrity hair colourist Brian O’Connor, was also raving about the so-called babylights, as they’re ”a nice way to leave a soft blend and an easy grow out.”
Slightly more delicate than regular highlights, babylights are woven throughout the hair for a more natural blend of colours, the guru explained.
What are the most difficult hair colours to maintain?
In general, unless you want to be forking out for appointments several times a year, the hair pros urged to steer clear of solid colours, particularly red.
“An all-over bleach and tone is always going to be high maintenance,” O’Connor chimed in, adding that allover black can be tough too, “especially if you have a lighter natural hair colour.”
Recently, another guru, Glam Girl Gabi, shared how to look younger when your locks are greying – and a mistake to avoid at all costs.
“The biggest piece of advice that I have for you if you’re looking into transitioning out of colouring your hair is to start by ashing out your hair,” she said on YouTube.
“Mistake number one is having a warm hair colour contrasting with your grey hair.
“Warm-toned browns like chestnut and even warm-toned blondes like honey are a massive contrast to grey because they are tonally opposite,” the pro noted in her video.
Seeing as grey is a naturally cool colour, having it right next to warmer shades, she said, will look ”really bad”.
Without first making the transition to ashier tones, the regrowth line will be ”all the eye can focus on”.
For those looking to avoid the contrast, the beauty whizz advised starting with a mushroom brown colour, as well as going for ashy grey highlights paired with deep brown lowlights.
