“We’re gonna share with you some of the realities of RV life and van life that you rarely see on social media,” Tanya, one half of the couple, said in a video.
The first warning that the influencers issued was about finding parking for your RV or camper.
Many tiny home dreamers think that you can just find any empty lot to park in and rest overnight, but this isn’t the case.
The YouTubers warned that you should always be on the lookout for signs that indicate you will be towed if you decide to park overnight.
“There’s also some towns and cities with ordinances that say there’s no overnight parking. You have to be aware of that,” Dave said.
Next, they gave a sobering reminder that not every campsite that you stop at will be beautiful.
“Not all campgrounds are beautiful, despite what you might see on social media,” Dave said in the video. “And many are actually very busy.”
When driving around the US, you’ll encounter all sorts of weather.
However, it’s important to know that the conditions could damage your home, meaning you must plan.
The YouTubers said they’ve driven through hailstorms that taught them how easily the weather can permanently damage your home in the middle of an empty stretch of road.
How van life defenders go to the bathroom is also always a hot topic of discussion, and Dave and Tanya said they’d be lying if they didn’t have some close calls.
“On the road, we’re always looking for rest areas,” Dave said after clarifying that they only urinate in their RV.
To stay clean, most RVs offer large freshwater tanks that you can use for showering outside.
However, Dave and Tanya said that it can oftentimes be hard to find a private spot where you can peacefully wash off.
When you’re on the road and sleeping at campsites, sometimes nature can make its way inside, the YouTubers said.
They warned that you could see mice, spiders, or other pests in your rig, so you should be prepared to get over irrational fears.
No matter what time of year you might decide to hit the road, you will likely experience some extreme temperatures.
The influencers said it’s important to recognize that both extreme heat and extreme cold can damage your rig, so you should plan before heading out during the summer and winter months.
When asked about the living costs, the YouTubers said social media can lead you to believe you can have a life of luxury for nearly nothing.
However, this couldn’t be further from the truth.
“For many of us, RV life and living in a campervan is not cheap at all,” Brad said.
Tanya continued: “Maintenance costs can really take a toll on you, and just know this: it’s going to happen.”
After giving all of these tips, the YouTubers concluded the video by saying tiny home living is all about being flexible.
While some people think they can plan their new life perfectly, they need to be prepared to not know exactly what’s going to happen next.
