Luckily, according to an expert, there are multiple simple methods that will banish these pests for good – and you won’t need to buy any pricey products.

Chatting to The Express, a spokesperson for Garden Buildings Direct revealed that it’s all about certain aromas.

“There are even some cupboard essentials which will come in very handy and are easily accessible to all.”

Apple cider vinegar

One of the scents that works like a charm is the sour and acidic aroma of apple cider vinegar, the pro said.

This cupboard essential draws the flies in, while adding a small amount of washing up liquid will ensure the flies get stuck and remain trapped in the bowl.

In order to attract as many pests as possible, the whizz advised placing the bowl in a central area.

Sugar

The gardening pro explained: “For those who don’t have vinegar to hand, a super easy but effective bait for flies is anything sweet, like honey, syrup or sugar.

“Fill a small glass jar with water and add one teaspoon of sugar and place it in your kitchen – once flies have been captured in the jar, pour away and repeat the process.”

Proper food storage

Just as key are preventative measures to ensure fruit flies don’t enter your home in the first place.

Here, the expert advised to seal all loose food and leftovers in air tight containers, placing them in the fridge.

”This is especially true of fruit and vegetables. If any produce becomes overripe, dispose of it immediately.”

The pesky fruit flies can also be attracted to drains, bins and any warm spaces, so it is vital to clean these on a regular basis.

With the weather warming up, Britons are also urged to make sure they don’t leave any fruit on the side.

This, the expert added, is particularly important when the fresh produce is ripe.
