The White House on Tuesday confirmed a deadly attack on a convoy moving United States (US) Embassy staffers in Nigeria’s southeastern state of Anambra.

The diplomatic convoy was moving in Ogbaru Local Government Area of the state when it came under a gunfire attack.

John Kirby, the spokesperson for the National Security Council in his briefing disclosed that American casualty was recorded in the attack.

“But we are aware of some casualties, perhaps even some killed, but I don’t want to get too far ahead of where we are right now,” the National Security Council Spokesman told reporters.

“We confirm there was an incident on May 16 in Anambra state.  U.S. Mission Nigeria personnel are working with Nigerian security services to investigate.  The security of our personnel is always paramount, and we take extensive precautions when organizing trips to the field.  We have no further comment at this time,” the US Mission Nigeria said in response to a Daily Trust inquiry.

The incident occurred in a region of Nigeria struggling with separatist terrorism and violent crimes. The identity of the attackers is unclear.
