Faye, from the UK, has been living and working in a remote area of Western Australia – but says she “would never have come” if she had been warned about the insects she has to endure
A UK woman has shared her experience of living in Australia, revealing that one ‘relentless’ aspect almost had her booking a flight back home. Australia is often a top choice for those looking to travel or live abroad, with its sunny climate, breathtaking landscapes, gorgeous beaches and unique wildlife.
However, one British expat is warning people about an aspect of life Down Under that isn’t often discussed openly. Faye, who resides and works in a remote part of Western Australia, confessed she “would never have come” if she’d known about the daily onslaught of insects she would face on a day-to-day basis.

She now finds herself having to wear a face net wherever she goes due to the persistent flies that swarm around her face. “They won’t give you a break,” she lamented.
Now, Faye is issuing a warning to other potential travellers. In a video on her TikTok account @fayebayee, she said: “Everyone says do a working holiday visa or move to Australia, go travel there it’s the best thing you’ll ever do.
“And you know, when I said I was going to do it, everyone’s like ‘you know be careful of the spiders, the snakes, the crocodiles, the sharks, the kangaroos they will be nice and the koalas – oh isn’t that going to be cute’.
“Do you know what nobody f***ing talks about the f***ing flies. I’ve talked about them and I am going to keep talking about them but nobody warned me about this.”
She remarked: “I probably wouldn’t have come if I knew that this was a reality. I am in Karijini National Park – it’s absolutely stunning.
“One of the most beautiful places in Australia that I’ve seen. But this is the reality. I have to wear this net over my head because they will not stop.”
Faye’s video sparked a flurry of comments, with thousands chiming in and many sharing their own fly encounters. One person posted: “Flies in Australia are the worst! Even the cities. Unbearable.”
Another confessed: “As an Aussie, I was severely unprepared for how bad the flies are in the outback.” Meanwhile, someone else quipped: “Our Australian flies love to welcome non Australians into the country… if you eat a large spoon of Vegemite the flies will leave you alone!”
“Born and raised here and the flies drive me insane,” a local resident contributed. In search of a solution, another commenter advised: “Make yourself a lotion bar with peppermint, citronella and rosemary oils.
“Trust me. When I go camping I’m never bothered or bit.”
Some even suggested Faye should get herself a cork hat to fend off the flies.
