The Greek islands have long been a hit with Brits, thanks to their stunning beaches, lively resorts and top-notch restaurants. But there’s one island that gives popular spots like Mykonos and Santorini a run for their money with its breathtaking scenery, luxury resorts and delectable cuisine, yet it often gets overlooked by tourists.

Alonissos may not be a secret – holiday companies including TUI, Jet2 and Sunvil offer packages to the island – but it doesn’t have the same fame as Rhodes or Crete, meaning you won’t be battling crowds of tourists. This isn’t an island for those seeking all-night parties or crowded clubs; instead, its nightlife revolves around cosy bars and fantastic restaurants where you can spend hours savouring the renowned Greek cuisine.

That’s not to say there’s nothing to do on the island. The beautiful green landscape is perfect for those who fancy a hike, and there are plenty of museums and historical sites nestled in the scenery.

The Old Town, with its cobbled streets lined with tavernas and shops, will make you feel like you’ve walked onto the set of Mamma Mia! Alonissos’ beaches are a must-see attraction according to TUI, which states: “Some of the cleanest waters in the Aegean lap against Alonissos’ coastline, so going for a paddle should be a top priority.

Snorkel fans should head for Steni Vala Beach, Glyfa Beach or Votsi Beach – all come with crystal-clear shallows, and shoals of tiny fish dart below.”

Agios Dimitrios Beach is a crowd-puller that consistently wows tourists. A satisfied visitor gushed on Tripadvisor: “This large beach, famed on many adverts and social media platforms lives up to the great expectations.

“The setting is wonderful seemingly surrounded by the typography of Alonissos and its neighbouring Island Peristera. There are even ducks using the water like it’s their own pond!

“The water is crystal clear and easily accessible from the small uniformed size small pebbles that form the beach. Enough free parking and two good eating choices with facilities on site.

“Sun beds and parasol €8. Great value and world class for sure. There is an inflatable section for children.”

Echoing these sentiments, another holidaymaker exclaimed: “Fabulous beach – spent the entire day on the beach – crystal clear waters and quietness-bliss! No crowds or music to annoy! Tavern on the beach staffed by a friendly lady – great food on offer. A must visit on Alonissos!”

Those seeking a more traditional beach experience will enjoy Chrisi Milia, boasting powder-soft golden sand that’s been hailed as the “nicest beach I’ve ever been to” by one visitor.

The picturesque spot is home to a small taverna, serving snacks and refreshments throughout the day although be aware hotels often reserve sections for their guests which can make it busier in peak summer.
