The second season of The Last of Us is set to premiere on Monday (April 14) and fans of the video game are hoping that one small detail from the games will be added to the show
Fans of The Last of Us are eagerly anticipating one particular detail in the TV show’s second season.
The post-apocalyptic drama series is set to return with its second season this Monday (April 14th), one day after its US release. The first season of the show followed the events of The Last of Us video game, and the upcoming season will continue the story where The Last of Us Part II kicks off – five years after the events of the initial game.
Gamers familiar with the franchise will undoubtedly be excited to see the action-packed events unfold on their TV screens, as this season will see the introduction of a fresh character named Abby, portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever, alongside Pedro Pascal’s Joel and Bella Ramsey’s Ellie. However, it’s not just the complex plotline that fans are hoping will be faithfully represented in the second season – they’re also keen to see the finer details accurately depicted on screen.
While the events of The Last of Us Part II are anticipated to span multiple seasons of the TV adaptation, there’s one early scene that fans are particularly hopeful will include a small yet poignant detail.
In the game, we witness Ellie and Joel settling into the Jackson commune featured in the first game and the inaugural season of the TV series. Players are treated to an early peek at Ellie’s home, and upon the game’s release in 2020, fans were delighted to spot a PlayStation 3 in her room, accompanied by copies of Jak and Daxter and Uncharted 2 – both titles developed by Naughty Dog, the creators of The Last of Us.
Despite the sequel being set in the 2030s, Ellie doesn’t own a PlayStation 4 or 5 because the Cordyceps Brain Infection caused a societal collapse in September 2013, just two months before the PlayStation 4’s release. Fans are eagerly anticipating this subtle reference to the game developer’s other works when the show’s second season airs.
Ellie’s room isn’t the only location in the game where a PS3 can be found; another one is in an abandoned high-rise flat that players explore later on. There’s also a curious detail – the games and consoles are invincible.
One enthusiast noted in a Reddit post: “Apparently, Sony is super particular about how its products are presented in-game. None of the consoles in either game have any sign of damage or are able to be damaged.”
Another chimed in: “Anywhere you can find a large TV on a stand [in the game], there’s most likely a PS3. Theres one at the beginning of part one in Joel’s home while you play as Sarah and multiple throughout the rest of the campaign of one and two. Uncharted is also a canon game in both series.”
The Last of Us Part II is brimming with hidden gems – known as Easter eggs – that fans will undoubtedly be hoping to spot in the TV adaptation.
While players navigate Joel’s place in the game, they come across a heartfelt moment – an opportunity to observe a photograph of Joel and his daughter Sarah, whose life was tragically cut short during the initial phase of the outbreak. This emotional detail is heightened by the adjacent picture of Joel with Ellie, underscoring his bond with her as a father figure.
Players of the game will also stumble upon a toy shop adorned with Halloween paraphernalia. Hidden within is a statue that first appeared in the Left Behind DLC (downloadable content), a poignant piece of content that told the backstory of how Ellie discovered she was immune to the virus.
Given that the TV series has already told the story of the DLC within its first season, it’s possible the production would also include this hidden detail in the second season.
The hit TV version of The Last of Us has a knack for embedding Easter eggs that only the most devout fans might recognise. A notable inclusion in season one was the title of the opening episode, “When You’re Lost in the Darkness,” complemented by the finale, “Look for the Light,” mirroring the Fireflies’ maxim – the pivotal rebel faction in the narrative.
Season two of The Last of Us premieres in the UK on April 14th on Sky Atlantic, and will continue to air every Monday.
