The Handmaid’s Tale fans are convinced they know how the series will end after spotting a chilling execution clue
The Handmaid’s Tale enthusiasts are on edge after a fresh teaser for the show’s sixth and final season was unveiled, hinting at dark times ahead for June Osborne (portrayed by Elisabeth Moss).
The latest sneak peek shows June donning a Martha’s attire while reflecting on the transformation of the handmaids’ red cloaks from mere garments to symbols of fury, with the handmaids gearing up for vengeance.
In fleeting shots that could easily be missed, viewers catch glimpses of the handmaids marching towards conflict, an Aunt in combat, Luke (played by O-T Fagbenle) brandishing a firearm, and in one particularly ominous scene, a handmaid is led to what appears to be her execution.
Audiences didn’t waste time dissecting the trailer, with one fan voicing their anxiety online: “Is it June getting executed?”
A Reddit user speculated: “There’s a part in the trailer where June is definitely back in Gilead as a handmaid and she looks like she is on stage about to be hung in front of a crowd(I think people of NB).”
They continued to predict: “I believe she will be saved before she is hung bc the crowd starts attacking Gilead folks. I think during this attack, Luke will likely be killed.”
Another viewer shared their sombre prediction: “It will be sad, but I definitely think June will be killed in front of Hannah/Agnes, the foreshadowing has been there since season 1. But this will spark something in Hannah/Agnes leading into the new The Testaments series.”
Elisabeth Moss has given fans of The Handmaid’s Tale a juicy update – the series’ spin-off, The Testaments, will launch directly after the main show concludes. So for those speculating about June’s potential demise as a pivotal moment for daughter Hannah’s story arc, this could be a major hint, reports the Mirror US.
But there’s hope for June yet, as loyalists to Margaret Atwood’s written sequel know she survives. With the television adaptation’s track record of surprises, it’s anyone’s guess if Hulu will align with the original narrative or chart its own course.
Moss, in conversation with Deadline, shed light on what audiences can anticipate regarding the twisted love triangle involving Nick, June, and Luke. She candidly revealed: “I do not think she wants a blended family with Luke and Nick. I don’t think she wants them in the same room.”
She delved deeper into June’s emotional world saying: “She also loves Luke, and there is so much there that is beautiful and but they need to rebuild their relationship, Luke and June, and they do.
“I think this season, I do think there’s a lot of rebuilding that happens. Undeniably, though, she’s never going to be able to forget Nick, and she’s never going to be able to not love him, and that makes good television.”
Moss summed up the gripping nature of the drama with: “I mean, if she just was able to be like, ‘I’m so sorry. I feel like we’re not in a good place, and we should move on,’ and be really healthy about it, that’d be super boring.”
The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 will air in the UK on May 3.
